this opening would of been so cool in english.
Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)

Here it is: FUNimation's version of Fight Together directly ripped from my DVD :-)
Eh. It's acceptable I suppose. Not perfect, but compared to Believe and Bon Voyage, anything looks fair.
-
THis here is a good fanmade one
Oh wow. That is really good. Funimation should just hire you tubers to dub the songs. Haha.
I found another clipped line that I don't remember anyone catching: when Law shows up he asks Buggy to give him Luffy at the end of the episode. The line is clipped even though Buggy responds to it. As usual, the line is found in the following episode. I wonder what idiot is responsible for this always happening.
Also, forgot that we hear Brownbeard's voice so early on. Sounded fine.

Somebody did point that out before. And yeah, its rather frustrating this managed to happen more than once, in the same season no less. I mean, I could understand this more if the lines were somehow deleted entirely, but the fact that they're still present in the next episode recap makes the mistake all the more asinine; somebody in quality-control should have definitely caught this.

We've just had a huge blow to the One Piece dub, as we've lost Cole Brown, the voice for Jaguar D. Saul and Marshall D. Teach/Blackbeard. May he rest in peace.

This is terrible, rest in peace Cole. Can't believe no one had heard about this until now.
-
I'm in complete shock and devastation. :(
This is the first time I've seen anything about it. Cole Brown brought such a charismatic portrayal as Blackbeard and his interpretation has been my default head-voice while reading Blackbeard scenes in the manga.
Rest in peace, Captain. -
Damn… He did such a great job in doing Blackbeard's voice. Such sad news. May he rest in peace.
-
Shit, man. He really did a phenomenal job. A real shame.
-
What a shame. I really enjoyed hearing him as Blackbeard. May he rest in peace and let his dreams live on.
-
Damn, this is like when Jerry Russell (Croctus) died….I liked Brown's Blackbeard. :(
May he rest in peace. At least he got to finish strong with the Marineford lines.
-
Cole did such a beautiful job of handling Blackbeard's voice with the perfect type of griminess and jolly nature for how pirate-y his character is. Like Meta already said, it's extremely fortunate that he got to record in time for Impel Down and Marineford.
In fact, judging by how the main cast is already dubbing New World content, is there a chance that Cole already recorded his lines for the fifth voyage DVD, specifically the scene where the Blackbeard Pirates had their final pre-skip appearance of having a cookout with a captured Bonney? We might still get to fortunately hear more of his voice.
-
can someone link a video to him as Blackbeared.
The speech with Luffy at Jaya would be nice… -

I didn't even know Jerry Russell passed away. That's also unfortunate, I really liked his voice in his various One Piece roles.

Cole Brown died relatively recently and Voyage 5 is officially being released in the next couple weeks; these episodes should definitely have been finished for a while now. So next boxset should be the last time we get to hear Cole Brown as Blackbeard. Such a shame, but at least he went out on a high note.

Agreed. Thank you for the confirmation.
-
Hm. He doesn't really show up too often after this, right? We only get a line or two in between arcs every so often.

One Piece Season 8 Voyage 3 is today's Right Stuf Holiday sale Mega deal at 19.99.

The only time Blackbeard makes an appearance with lines is
! one line of dialogue in Opening 17 and that brief transponder snail conversation in Dressrosa
-
What? I can't believe this… Cole Brown was an awesome Teach and his voice got me to appreciate this charismatic character a whole lot more, and now he's gone. Well, all I can do now is hope his family can fight through this and that Funimation can get a new Teach before Dressrosa (or if they decide to re-record the flashbacks with Teach on Fishman Island).
2016, what a year.

Actually he does have some in story lines post-timeskip when
! He speaks with Burgess via transponder snail in Dressrosa.

I believe that JC's second example is exactly what you just said lol.
-
Oh wow this is such a shame, he was really getting into the character and was knocking it out of the park i Impel Down and Marineford, looking forward to hearing his great voice as Blackbeard one last time in the next set. R.I.P
-
@Count:

oops, lol. I somehow only took away the first example when I read it. I feel silly now.

RIP Cole Brown…

It's a real irony that he passed after playing the biggest role that he had in the series so far. R.I.P.

New trailer alert. IGN put up a new one for Film Gold. And the cast list, which I can't find off their app.

Tesoro is Keith silverstein.
-
This is ridiculously sad…. like, oh wow....
He made an awesome Teach and it'll be difficult replacing him. At least FUNimation has time since Teach doesn't have any major lines up to current in the Anime, so they have ample time to find someone good while we wait for Oda to dust off Blackbeard.... but still...
My condolences obviously to his family and friends... he was only 60... I hate when awesome people die too soon...

I just heard about Cole Brown's passing. He was great as Blackbeard, especially just seeing his work recently in Marineford, and I really liked him as Saul too. He was on one of the recent commentaries too I believe; he talked about how he was really getting into the story of One Piece and had started following it. I was really excited to see what he was going to do in the role post-timeskip. Also read that he was a firefighter and paramedic. He was younger than I thought he was. Condolences to his family and those who knew him. R.I.P Cole…
-
Terrible to hear of Cole Brown's passing. I really enjoyed listening to him talk in one of the recent DVD commentaries. May he forever RIP.
If there's any silver lining to this, at least it appears as though he recorded
! all of the pre-skip dialogue. Since Blackbeard doesn't have any lines for quite a long time, the voice change could be attributed simply to the passage of time in-show.
-
Not sure if everyone here is aware of this or not… But Fandango has already started selling tickets for One Piece Film Gold.
Here are the list of cities that have showings (so far).
http://onepiecepodcast.com/2016/11/29/one-piece-film-gold-north-american-release-dates-locations/
Does anyone know if this is a good deal of theaters, or is it small compared to other limited releases? Would like to know this information because if it's small even compared to other limited releases…. then we know where OP stands here. :-/
-
Small. They're somehow not playing it in Austin, which gets all the movies. I'm pissed; praying this isn't the final schedule. I'm not driving three hours each way to see this.

It probably isn't. They've just been adding new locations to this page as Fandango has made it available over the past couple days.

Damn. I was afraid of that. Looks like I was right about this not having anywhere close the same amount of screens as the two DBZ movies got.
Looks like venues don't want to waste their time with a unpopular lisence. Meh.
-
Dragon Ball has had nearly 20 years for its United States fanbase to build up. One Piece has had a little over 10.
It is completely understandable that they would have different sized releases.

Of course you were. Dragonball Z is a franchise that has been proven as a massive success for Funimation and is more well-known to the general public in the US than most anime out there. And with that whole “nostalgia factor” they can even draw in people who haven’t given a second glance to the series in years. Only other theatrical funimation release in recent years that came anywhere close to it in theater count was Shin Godzilla which, again, is based on a more well-known franchise. But even that had substantially less theaters than the DBZ movies. Most of their other theatrical screenings are nowhere near that size because anime is way more niche nowadays. If you were honestly expecting a theatrical release anywhere close to that size then you were expecting way too much.

Guess I let some optimistic users here persuade me that Film Gold would be given a release at least close to DBZ's two movies. They kept on tooting that "OP is the number 2 anime for FUNIMATION and that means it'll get over 800 screenings!"
Guess I should have known that was a load of hogwash. :-/
Still, I'm hearing this release is even smaller than other more niche titles. If that's the case then damn…

I wouldn't go that far, it's far bigger than the more niche titles' releases. FUNi kind of gave OP the shaft this week in favor of Dragon Ball Super which I'm excited for, but they had OPP do the post about the theater listings/ticket sales out of nowhere and then they themselves came out with a trailer and cast list after all the Super news had made the rounds. I mean, I have my ticket for January 12th and I'm excited, but they could have managed their news output a little bit better this week. Maybe they didn't anticipate the Toonami Asia news happening for Super so they put theirs out last minute but still, they should have given them both equal news shares if you know what I mean. Also, I feel a little slighted because FUNi said that they would screen it in a few theaters in Massachusetts when I asked them and when the listings went up, the closest one to me was an hour and a half away in Connecticut. Again, I'm excited but I also wish that Toei and FUNi got more theaters on board with this one and the news output and theater deals were better handled, I seriously thought it was their second biggest property because they don't have FMA anymore.
-
Or maybe we can wait until the full list of theater locations is revealed, which probably won't be for a few more weeks, before being all doom-and-gloomy.

Even if OP being number 2 for funimation were correct (and I’m not sure it is) I still think it would be unreasonable to assume it would get anywhere close to the same amount of theaters as DBZ; that’s just how big the Dragonball franchise is for them.
Also, as far as I can tell, Film Gold isn’t that much smaller than other niche releases. Then again, I have been doing a bit of research on my own, and there are a good number of theater screenings that haven’t yet been listed on that podcast page and more are continuing to be added. In fact, here is the amount of theater screenings for other funimation films to compare Film Gold with (from the films I could find number confirmations on anyways):
! DBZ Resurection F- 894 theaters
DBZ Battle of Gods- Over 800 theaters
Shin Godzilla- 440/534 (US+Canada) theaters
Summer Wars- 127 theaters
Boy and the Beast- 122 theaters
One Piece Film Gold- 114 theaters (from what I’ve seen so far)
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos- 100 theaters
Psycho Pass-100 theaters
Evangelion 1.0- 77 theaters
Project Itoh- 60 theaters
Empire of Corpses- 50 theaters
! And there were other movies which got even smaller amount of theater releases, usually through Alamo Drafthouse)Also, I feel a little slighted because FUNi said that they would screen it in a few theaters in Massachusetts when I asked them and when the listings went up, the closest one to me was an hour and a half away in Connecticut.
Like I said before, this is not the full listing yet; just the ones OPP have found themselves. Fandango has been adding locations over the last couple days, and there are should be more to come (I even stumbled across a few new ones this morning). We probably won’t be looking at a full listing for at least a week or two.

I don't expect it be anywhere close to DBZ but more than this in terms of theaters. Also, if there are listings for it in Massachusetts, I'm going to be saltier than ever. Then again, from the looks of it, this looks better than the limited theatrical release for Movie 8 back in 2008 and Film Z in Alamo Drafthouse theaters 2 years ago in terms of theater count

I'm just being realistic .This is OP in America after all. As much as we believe it's this powerhouse that's can hang among the likes of DBZ, Naruto and OPM here… sadly... it cannot. It's more niche than those titles in America.
I'm actually suprised they're even managing a theater release, but looking at other movies FUNI put in theaters, I guess it doesn't take much to accomplish that.
I know these things don't NEED to do well... it's just a glorified commercial.... but I really hope it doesn't bomb.
Every other main shonen jump series managed to do just fine with these limited releases . It'd really suck if OP is the odd-one out in that regard and bombs so hard even this limited release would be regretted.
Well here's to hoping... I got two theaters 30 mins away showing it so I guess I shouldnt complain.
-

Well to be honest One Piece at least passes the "Best Buy" test. What is the Best Buy test? I've noticed that since majorly downsizing their anime section there are a few titles that consistently appear on their shelves which are usually the ones that keep selling units. Dragonball Z, Ghibli movies, Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Cowboy Bebop and yes One Piece are the titles that are ALWAYS there.
I think the thing we're not considering is the ebb and flow of the anime fandom. Naruto and Bleach were breakout hits that had this huge wave of popularity with the Western anime fandom but this wave has experienced a slow down in more recent years. Most people have caught on to how mundane Bleach is, and while Naruto is consistently popular I think the last big Western boom for the series was when the manga ended, and we got The Last and Boruto. The post ending stuff (novels, video games and such) are still doing well but the anime seems to be stagnating.
What people seems to forget that once One Piece got out of the 4Kids shadow it has gradually become a strong seller for Funimation. While it seems like DBZ and Fairy Tail are a little more mainstream the fact that Funi is licensing and doing limited releases of the newer movies is very telling. Also consider that Toonami REFUSES to air Fairy Tail but was willing to air One Piece's newer material (at the time it started airing). Bandai Namco has re-dedicated themselves to releasing the games (albeit subbed only) and I feel that One Piece isn't quite as niche as you're making it out to be. Definitely not mainstream but it seems to be holding it's own and hasn't lost it's appeal to it's fandom like Naruto and Bleach have.
-

RomanMack, you have to stop with this pessimistic insecurity about One Piece's popularity in the United States.
You're saying that One Piece can't hang with Naruto and DBZ (not sure why you even mentioned OPM), yet the sheer amount of One Piece merch and products available in the US on yearly basis says otherwise.
The Boruto movie didn't even get a full week nor a sizeable theatrical release and that was only shown in English Sub.
DBZ is an anomaly that has had more exposure and more seniority on One Piece.I'm actually suprised they're even managing a theater release, but looking at other movies FUNI put in theaters, I guess it doesn't take much to accomplish that.
You haven't really looked then because the two DBZ movies and Film Gold are currently the only anime movies that have had limited screenings slotted for over a week.
I know these things don't NEED to do well… it's just a glorified commercial.... but I really hope it doesn't bomb.
The limited showings and the ease of digital distribution to theater chains make it extremely difficult for this type of endeavors to "bomb".
Every other main shonen jump series managed to do just fine with these limited releases . It'd really suck if OP is the odd-one out in that regard and bombs so hard even this limited release would be regretted.
By "every other main shonen jump series", you just mean Dragon Ball and Naruto.
Can you cut it with the hyperbole and realize that One Piece is one of the few really popular anime franchises that even get this kind of treatment? -
While it is not a major powerhouse nor Funimation’s most popular shows, I feel like claiming the dub is “unpopular” or suggest it could “bomb” is seriously downplaying this series and how far its come. For all its uphill struggles from a massively weak start (and the general change in the anime market, which really began around the time it started), the One Piece dub (and series in general) has survived and continues to grow in official content and availability over here.
There’s 500 episodes, 3 movies, a soon to be released TV special (with possibly more that haven’t been 100% officially confirmed), the show is still airing on TV (despite not being the highest rated or on the most convenient time, it still helps promote the series beyond the online fanbase), and there’s even just the fact that a broadcast dub was ever even considered. And, going even beyond the dub, stuff like the simulcast (which started back before this type of thing was as common as it currently is) and the continuing of video games releases must have come about due to it showing signs of success through its DVD releases. This just doesn’t feel like the type of exposure a supposedly “unpopular” show would get. Even these theatrical screenings are proof of the series success. Funimation has better knowledge of how well this series does than any of us, so the fact they went through with this must mean they consider something like this worth the effort; they wouldn’t go through with it if they didn’t feel like this is something they could financially benefit from.
It feels like this “One Piece might not be doing well” conversation keeps coming up every now and again, but it doesn’t ever feel like there’s strong enough evidence to really back up this sentiment (and I mean more than just some Self-important trolls trashing it on youtube, or whatever). In fact, it seems every time this argument does come up we get something new that should put those notions to rest. One Piece dub will probably never be the massive success that some people hope for, but I don’t see why that means people should keep assuming the absolute worst of it. This type of mindset made more sense at the beginning of its run or even during the break between season 3 and 4, but nowadays? It just seems so…strange to see this still being a thing.
-
The way I see it… it keeps coming back up for a reason. And not just here.
OP has done fine for itself here.... but even so people have a hard time trusting it to accomplish things.
There's always an aura of "It can't do it" surrounding the series here when it comes to its success in the states.
Most people just feel it does well enough to keep on going, but that's it. And I guess that's all that should matter.
But... meh. I dunno. I try to believe in it but I just don't believe in its appeal here yet. Fully, at least.
