I pretty much can't get over Seiji's Quirk.
It's literally a Nazi that can turn people into hamburgers, and it's played horrifyingly straight. Holy shit.
-
So good to see a manga where the author knows you can freely direct electricity to a place.
Mah girl Asui already classified and we didn't saw anything from her side, good, Horikoshi keeping her for later. On the other hand, I hope we are not going to see all of 1-A succeeding in this test.
btw, how comes OP nod to KochiKame was the most boring one? Toriko's was just perfect.

I was happier when I thought small eyes turned people into clay…or potatoes. Yikes.
To be fair, it is basically turning people into clay with how kneads his and the opponent's flesh. But the fact that they're still made of flesh makes them susceptible to being damaged by attacks like Kaminari's despite being incapacitated.
I'm loving these statements about Bakugou's character development and prowess at heroics. I'll be saving these for the next time he gets discredited like with the last chapter.
I'm confused whether or not we'll see the remaining UA students pass. Would like to see Aoyama and Iida's fight. Kaminari was great, too bad he didn't get a sword. This might be his first battle without derping out.
Civilian rescue incoming? If this chapter came out a couple days earlier I'd vote for Muppet Grandpa. Now I can't get this out of my head:
!
It looks like all of the U.A. students are passing this round. I can see at least the main five getting licenses (Deku, Bakugou, Iida, Ochako, and Shouto) getting licenses since it seems that recent plot advancements as of late, such as making U.A. a boarding school, are Horikoshi's subtle attempt at giving himself more leeway for more superheroing outside of the school without as many plot detail burdens as past arcs. I even remember an interview from somewhere that Horikoshi mentioned that having the kids in school with strict superpower regulations blocked the potential for having as much creative freedom as, say, Spider-Man's stories.
Yeah, a bit disappointed that Kaminari didn't get a sword, although I'm willing to bet that Horikoshi will still find a clever way to implement that in the coming years. But having him essentially gain lightning rod tools for more strategically precise lightning attacks is great, and I loved seeing Kaminari not short-circuit and deep out like usual while supporting his friends. I can only hope for more side-character spotlights like this as the arc continues.
I would LOVE having the second round focus on civilian rescue. In fact, as cool as the intro of the Shigaraki and the League of Villains was back at USJ, I still wish that we could've seen the students deal with rescue situations in the various environments. The pressure of rescuing civilians can lead to a lot of character depth and development both internally and externally if properly utilized, even just as a test. I would definitely like to see if Izuku and Ochako can redeem themselves after how reckless they were with collateral damage during the Battle Trial arc. And the fact that they might have to rescue old people is perfect for both effective superheroing and humor since they need delicate care due to their age and can criticize/distract their saviors in a J. Jonah Jameson-rambling style. Not to mention all of the messed up potential for sabotaging other rescues if the goal is to rescue a select amount of senior citizens.
But this is all assuming that they will do a civilian rescue challenge. I hope it is, because we need to see more of a focus on training regimens focusing on rescuing in a SUPERHERO manga than constantly pitting the heroes against each other, although Horikoshi could easily both at the same time lol. The only times I actually remember rescuing average civilians (not aspiring or professional heroes like with Stain or when Deku saved Ochako, because that threat automatically comes with the job and they're at least trained to help themselves) being a major plot focus was when Deku saved the kid and All-Might's fight with All for One. But those instances were outside of the school curriculum, so we really haven't seen ANY classes or trials based around saving civilians or hostages.

G-ross power, but can't say it isn't interesting. And yay for Kaminari! I'm so happy for him finally getting a time to shine!

If Bakugou's going down in third place (again…), then I need to see Deku bumped off from absolute glory with at least a tie.
EDIT: Don't worry, Bakugou, my sweet prince. You will surely achieve second place in the official polls like you deserve. But seriously, I knew Tsuyu was popular, but I did not expect her to make the top three lol. I definitely don't mind though, she's my favorite girl in the cast.

Really appreciate the commentary you gave for Present Mic, Zar. The updates got me more excited for a fan poll than I would usually be.
But mark my words, the almighty Explode Kill Lord WILL win second place next year. Especially after his character development continues to shine in arcs like the current one.

But mark my words, the almighty Explode Kill Lord WILL win second place next year. Especially after his character development continues to shine in arcs like the current one.
I figured people would grow bored if it was just a regular voting contest or a poll. And I love Present Mic. I forgot to vote for him:(
If only I could get this motivation for the One Piece contest…And I'm surprised Deku won. I thought Bakugo or Tsuyu would take first place. Not that I'll complain, he's been a wonderful protagonist and it's honestly fun seeing AP forums put him as the #1 character.
Some random info and thoughts...
- For being the awesome, fan-favorite character he is, Tokoyami has a severe lack of colored pages.
- Same with Tsuyu and Eraserhead. Each one of them deserves a full page each.
- I ran out of panels with Present Mic smiling.
- I came to appreciate the Mic/Eraserhead combo even more. They should hang out more often.
- Most surprising placements: Mineta beating Iida and Hatsume.
- Most heartwarming votes: Midoriya's Mom and Uraraka. I'm glad Inko got in, and I love seeing the main girl of the manga be fairly well-liked.
- Funniest vote: Naruto. Believe it.
- Why does Horikoshi's color spreads look incredible, but his volume covers always feel off?
-

Don't you get it, Mineta is one of us.
-
Nice job Zar this was really enterteining. Sometimes I feel jealous for Uraraka that Tsuyu is so much more popular than the main girl, but Tsuyu is such a good character that she honestly does deserve to be so highly rated. Next time though Ochako will break into the top 3

I'd have voted for Uraraka, but I wanted to show some love for Ashido, who I know goes under the radar sometimes.
I love the acid quirk, and her lively personality makes her fun. I can't wait for her to get a turn at some individual focus. -
@Count:
Cannon's right. Todoroki got in second (above Bakugou) in the last poll. Same as characters like Trafalgar Law in One Piece (above both Zoro and Sanji while right below Luffy). Blandness doesn't really matter when you have a public poll that isn't exclusive to analytical geeks like us and actually includes lots of fangirls and casual fans. Not that Shouto's a bad character or that he can't be your favorite, but it's easy to understand why he gets so many votes despite being a blander character. And characters like him and Law often shine more through character interactions than as individual characters, such as the running gag of Shouto emoting about things like being a "destroyer of hands" and whatnot lol.
And I voted for Shigaraki. I always thought it was a shame that freaking Kaminari got in over our main antagonist (at least in this phase of the story, he could become an anti-hero for all we know at some point).
The thing is, Todoroki is just a watered down version of Zuko from Avatar. Right down to the burn mark on the left side of his face. The difference is Zuko had to deal with the inner turmoil of restoring his honor and doing what's right. Shouto's is just "Oh my dad's a dick, and my mom is such a caring person even though she poured scalding hot water on my face".
Instead of Diet Zuko, it might have been better if Todoroki's character was trying to prove that his heritage and quirk don't define who he is. That he can accomplish anything in spite of the advantages he has.

Thanks for putting this together, Zar. The poll and its grand reveal was very enjoyable. A bit surprised to see Stain ranking that high.

Isn't that… what he is trying to do?
-
Isn't that… what he is trying to do?
Mostly, yes.
Personally, I like to see Todoroki as doing everything he can to become top hero not despite Endeavor or to spite him, but regardless of him.
My favorite moment in the tournament arc was when Todoroki told Endeavor that he'd honestly forgotten about him when he was using his fire against Deku. To me it was a big slap in the face to Endeavor's goal of making Todoroki into his own image.
-
Thank you Zar, that poll was fun and very well done. Nomination for an AP-award incoming

At one point Stain was in the lead. But the longer the contest went on the further he fell in the rankings.

That's a REALLY superficial comparison. In fact, despite the matching scars, their character journeys were essentially the opposite of each other. For the first third of the series was trying to actually gain respect, acknowledgement, and even forgiveness from his father after his banishment due to the war conference incident. Then it becomes about relearning his ethical values and perception of both his father and Aang for the latter two books.
Shouto was literally all about spiting his father by not using his fire powers so that Endeavor's image was not perpetuated in Shouto's rise to the top due to his inhumane, selfish family abuse. He was literally doing everything in his power to NOT get acknowledgement from his father due to both despising Enki and having an internal fear of becoming him due to his fire Quirk and legacy. And his relationship with his motherbis strained and complex one that you're not giving enough cred it to, especially when she expressed regret about what she did. Not to mention that Endeavor's actions and mindset give great insight as to how twisted the world's society based around superpowers and Pro Hero rankings can be with things like arranged Quirk marriages made for the sake of passing on powers to offspring. And Deku convinced Shouto to do what you literally want Shouto's character to be like. It's why he accepted Endeavor's offer to let him work alongside him on cases and learn about Pro-Hero work during the Stain arc, because he's taking advantage of opportunities while not letting his pride and resentment irrationally hold him back.
Backstory-wise, there isn't anything wrong with Shouto. In fact, I think he's the ONLY character besides Deku, Iida, and kind of Bakugou who has had his background get a proper spotlight in the main story. What arguably makes him unappealing is having a bland personality. You can have the most tragically epic origin story in the world and still have the emotive qualities or interests of a rock most of the time, hence why I used Law as a comparison. Neither does having proficient skill make up for lack of emotion. Luckily, Horikoshi has taken advantage of that for a gag on him randomly emoting. Shouto also needs to improve on having motivation towards abgoal like being the best Pro Hero that does not solely rely on his backstory, otherwise he won't be able to adapt to being involved in arcs with emotional investment and stakes that don't relate to Endeavor. As good of a backstory as it is, always having his character relate back to Endeavor will end up being monotonous and a waste of character potential since that story was settled for the meanwhile (not that I don't expect future developments with their relationship, I definitely do since we should see how Endeavor deals with being the top Pro-Hero without properly "earning" the title). Uraraka also faces this a bit since her motivation towards being a hero is strictly for the sake of her parents rather than any individual desire or philosophy, so it will be interesting to see how her character development progresses. You know, when she isn't written solely as a love interest.
-

If it is a rescue operation, then I'd like there to be a catch to it, just like the entrance exams. It sounds repetitive, but I feel if there's a hidden catch to it, then the kids can really shine through. Especially for Bakugou. If Bakugou completes this portion, including fulfilling the hidden requirement set by the examiners, then we can really see how far he's come from the first chapter till now.
-
A rescue operation is a pretty cool idea, especially if the babies and elderly are using their own quirks to add difficulty.
-
Can you imagine trying to rescue a baby with super-powers?
"Oh my god kid, are you alive? The house is on fire we need to get out"
Panicked kid flies through the roof
"Well, okay then". -

Of course. The civilians being old and young people alone could be the twist, since the old people could be huge complainers, fragile, and have mental illnesses that could make them wander off and get intro trouble or short-term memory loss. Not to mention that there are youngsters there as well, who could try to pull pranks and mess things up when being rescued or something. And those people having Quirks of their own like Zar mentioned complicates things even more lol. Not to mention how they utilize and inhibit their Quirks while saving them, because, for example, Bakugou can't go all-out with his explosions and propulsion while rescuing someone. Here's an example of when a rescue where you recklessly use your powers can easily go wrong:
!
!And I would love to see that type of feat regarding Bakugou's character growth.
-
If it is a rescue, I wonder if it'll allow team forming like the Calvary battle did. If so, another sign for Bakugo's growth could be picking teammates he normally wouldn't work with to succeed (like Tsuyu or Kouda)
-

This whole thing is giving me Pokemon Mystery Dungeon vibes:
!
!Rescue teams would be pretty sweet. Also reminds me of the Land of Waves arc from Naruto with Team 7 protecting the bridge builder. That would be very entertaining, I love seeing teamwork between these characters and how their relationships develop. Maybe Ojiro, Kouji, or Satou can finally be relevant like Tokoyami during the Sports Festival.
-
Kouda's a bad match for Bakugou since his explosions will interfere with and frighten animals, but most other classmates outside of Tokoyami could work some combo with Bakugou.
Random train of thought: this round of the exam had an optional degree of teamwork involved, so the next round might be more of a direct matchup. Maybe 2 or 3 kids each compete to save a single civilian who causes trouble for everyone- when the students aren't trying to escape with the civilian, they're trying to save the civilian from the other students, who from their perspective are kidnappers. It would make the students really focus on avoiding collateral damage while attacking.
-

That just makes me want to see it more lol. Seeing how classmates deal with their partner's powers countering out their's makes for great creative moments where the author thinks outside of the box, along with developing tense relationships.

That's pretty much how I've been imagining the next round. Or there could be a limited amount of citizens in separate environments, and the individual players/teams have to compete to rescue the most and maybe bring them back to their own base/safe zone. Which will naturally lead to conflict that you'd naturally see from capture the flag games. Saviors versus kidnappers could also work and have a similar dynamic.

It'd be interesting to see the students matched with their "worst partner" (ex. Bakugo and Kouda, as mentioned above). Todoroki + Hagakure feels like another bad match; Todoroki typically targets massive areas, bu he can't do that when he has no idea where his partner is and she has no protection against his quirk. Or Todoroki + Tsuyu, I think she was weak towards heat? Quick changes in temperature could have a greater effect on her.

Todoroki and Hagakure have been paired, at USJ. Though Todoroki didn't know that and indeed has a realization he could've frozen her and not known it

Funny thing about frogs. Their body temperature can adapt to gradual temperature changes in the environment to the point that they won't even notice. So say you put a frog in a frying pan or pot and gradually rise the oven temperature. They won't even realize that the heat is increasing if it's at a slow rate until they're literally burning alive. They will notice if there are very udder temperature shifts, so Horikoshi was pretty creative when it came to Tsuyu's frog powers. She's arguably this series' Spider-Man with her agility, wall-crawling, and tongue acting similar to webbing.

I wouldn't mind her learning some form of camouflage or skin-transmitted poison, although I doubt Horikoshi is going to introduce completely different powers like that for his characters unless they're directly inherited from their parents unknowingly. He prefers having simplistic powers that build off of they established premise for the sake of diversity among his characters and maybe to push himself creatively with the power themes he has set-up instead of copping out with some random additionally power you could support the reasoning of from obscure and random real-world knowledge.
On the subject of animal powers… Do characters like Tokoyami and Kenji Tsuaraeme designed to have animal heads look like that because of Quirks? Because Tokoyami's Quirk is specifically stated to only be Dark Shadow, and I think that if he had some sort of crow/raven Quirk, it should have at least gave him wings and claws instead of just a head to be of use. Not that Quirks can't end up being useless like that in reality (like, I don't know, a Quirk that lets you grow your nails to be slightly more sharp like Meg from Family Guy), but I doubt Horikoshi would show one (at least without pointing out how useless it is).
So are the animal-headed people just a quirky character design style by Horikoshi similar to how Oda likes to draw humans bizarrely huge and non-human like Gekko Moria (assuming he isn't revealed to be a Snakeneck or something)? Because I'm completely cool with that, I'm just wondering.

Agreed. But isn't that a bit obvious? I mean, one of the reasons why the entrance exams was so well-executed is because even the readers didn't expect it. The old farts and kids trying to push the examinees' buttons on purpose would be a bit too obvious. I'd hope for some other unexpected criteria those kids need to fulfill, that'd make Blasty's passing all the more satisfying if he actually fulfills the hidden criteria.

Just take a look at Kouda. His head looks like a rock monster, but his quirk is animal communication. And there is also the kid who looks like a zombie from 1-B that makes pitfalls. It is very unlikely that their appearance and quirk are related.
Also, the various funny-looking background characters.

It might just be a gimmick Hosgikori uses. Remember Habuko the snake-head girl? Her quirk was paralyzing anyone she looks at. Doesn't have anything to do with snakes, I think, so it might just be something to make characters stand out.
