Yeah, just saw the news…how sad. http://io9.gizmodo.com/steven-universe-artist-quits-twitter-over-fan-harassmen-1785242762
I really hate those particular kind of fans.
-
i actually saw this happening in real time earlier this week when a really prominent fanartist made a few angry posts and mentioned that a friend who attended one of lauren's livestreams said that the show creators put hints and references for things that sometime dont mean anything, and that's where some people got Tumblr Angry
thats when she posted this https://66.media.tumblr.com/6237881a189e55bc1f46463ddb937341/tumblr_obo8yjUCYU1uiakt9o1_1280.jpg
then i think people kept picking at her about stupid shit all week and she finally got sick of it
honestly bless her for being online and interacting with people at all. I hope she'll still post things online eventually
-
This APPARENTLY all started because she posted some sketches she did of Lapis and Peridot interacting (Because they're kinda roomies now) and the "Shippers" got upset….
No, I'm not kidding. Apparently, there's a group who "Ship" Lapis and Peridot, and a group who "Ship" Peridot and Amethyst and.... that's what started this.... Because the sketch she shared seemed to "favor" Lapis and Peridot.....
..................
................
..
.
...........
....It's times like this I'm happy I just WATCH the show and only occasionally talk about it with people here. I don't really get involved with any of the fanbase stuff at all.
-
Because of the Zuke controversy I wound up looking into her work. And i found a deleted scene she did of Amethyst and Pearl teaching Peridot how to eat. As a tribute to the storyboard artist, I'm gonna try and find sound a likes for Amethyst, Pearl, and Peridot and try to animate it as close to the show as possible. Partially to see if I'm good enough to animate show quality, and practical as a tribute to Lauren because of this shit. The left is her board, the right is me drawing to match the art style of the show in Flash. I think I got pretty close. I had to tweak some of her portions to make it slightly more in tune with the show. The background was done in Photoshop.
-
the "Shippers" got upset….
Shippers are invariably the worst, most toxic part of any given fanbase so this is no surprise.
-
I know Lauren's gotten into brush-ups with fans before. I remember earlier in the season hearing her make similar comments like "I am a real human being" in response to harassment. It sucks, no doubt, since she does a lot of great work and seems like a chill person, but this isn't uncommon among fanbases? I've seen plenty of once-socially active creators go to hermitude after having enough of dealing with it, because big fanbases are stressful to interact with as a center of attention.
I don't get why people are immediately reacting like "SU fanbase sux" and I've seen it over facebook and other places from people not involved with the series and I hate it. I don't think Lauren would want that to be the takeaway at all, and it disrespects her work as much as the fans that harassed her in the first place.
Every fanbase has bad eggs. No exceptions. It's like rule 34, cause you know there are dicks in every one of them. My experiences with the SU fanbase have never been any less than great, in person or on the internet. This also happens to be my experience with every other fanbase people say is terrible. More consistently than fanbases people don't say are terrible. So it is what it is. I hope Lauren's okay and that fans curb that kind of behavior. Finally, I hope people stay positive and don't get angry at a big fandom for, of statistical necessity, including some less than good people.
-
It's not as bad as the Zamii incident, but god damn does it suck to know the fans can be that shitty.
No wonder Matt mostly quit Steven Universe related stuff on his Twitter.
-
Zuke draws the best Amethyst IMO. … I don't have anything to contribute to this conversation…
-
This whole deal with shippers harassing people is bizarre. If you can ship fictional characters which you have no part in creation why wouldn't a person that created said characters ship them.
This kinda shit is so weird it would deserve an sociological study or at least an Twilight Zone episode over it.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

i think most fandoms have this kind of problem but it stands out for SU bc the fandom is so cannibalistic. Like the creators are doing their best to create good show that's inclusive and loving, and a portion of the fans just latch on to stupid shit and cause a stink
look at the face of Steven Universe Ship War 2016 Never Forget

https://66.media.tumblr.com/24aa86b8fcaa96dcb494045cc2c0cc83/tumblr_obrf7ldxHm1uurdq3o1_500.jpgYeah there were Amidot shippers freaking out thinking that was canon confirmatiin they were in a relationship and Lapidot shippers saying it was just a tease or they should have kissed. Its got to be partly annoying when your leading the LGBT movement in tons on areas but people complain that you dont represent everything enough and are " a fake progressive or something "

Acknowledging shippers is like feeding bears; you might think you're doing something nice for somebody but, in the end, somebody is going to get mauled.
-

No need to make blanket statements. It's a very common thing to do and most of them are fine.

Upon a rewatch of "Know your fusion", I enjoyed its meta-ness even more. Because while ostensibly a "fanservice" episode, in the sense that we spend almost the whole time with two fusion guest-stars, the main thrust of the episode is spent rejecting a different type of fanservice: The relentless desire for "New Stuff!" When Sardonyx hijacks the show it becomes literally about forcing Smokey to show off more abilities, because yeah yeah we've already seen the damn YoYo, what else you got, show us the good stuff!!! The approach to "developing" Smokey is shallow and inorganic, not on her own terms, and thus fails miserably.
Of course, we do get character development, and even further applications of Smokeys YoYo, but these things happen organically, and the ultimate resolution is Steven and Amethyst getting to explain Smokey on their terms and their time, instead of being pressured into it for Sardonyx (and our!) benefit.Basically the episode says relax, don't force someone to perform (or give you juicy exposition) just because you're excited, just let it happen. If thats not Steven Universes storytelling in a microcosm, I don't know what is.
You even still get minor worldbuilding in offhand moments, like the fusions having rooms and official POWAH LEVAHLS! Its having the cake and eating it too! Have I mentioned how much I love this show!??!

Strength levels "officially" but I was surprised opal was above garnett and it had me thinking that when jasper showed up the gems really should have fused, opal was there before the ship arrived and could have probably beat jasper, along with sardonyx and sugilite and definitely alexandrite.
Now Obviously I know why they didnt for story reasons, and what happened after was great but Ill attribute this up to them being in the middle of a fight and not considering those choices at the time.
-
I thought about Opal > Garnet, and it makes sense when you consider that Garnet's components aren't very strong to begin with. Rubies are low level soldiers, Sapphire aren't even fighters. She has advantages with foresight and elemental powers, but Opal is made of an exceptionally fierce Pearl and a natural warrior Amethyst, so she should be physically stronger. That's only physical strength, though. Sugilite is stronger than Sardonyx because Amethyst is stronger than Pearl, but Pearl can fight evenly with Amethyst (and even surpass her) because she's strong in
the reala different way.I'm not one for power level discussions, but this all seems well thought out and consistent, so it's fun to sort.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Thursday's ep leaked for those of you interested.
-
This probably count as a leak, so read below at your own risk:
! Buddy's book was really nice. Was the librarian reading Passions of Xanxor in public? No dignity.
And we have one of the first questions about the show answered. Humans do have some degree of knowledge about the gem sites even if they are oblivious of the magical polymorphic sentient rocks being such. And what's the deal with all those lions? Did they fuse into one big pink lion? Why Seven? Anyway, till Thursday when I watching this again. -
Who keeps leaking this shit
-
The rumors on reddit is that they use a very outdated security, and haven't bothered to change it.
-
Who keeps leaking this shit
Less leaks from what I understand and more that Cartoon Network just can't be bothered to wait until after an episode actually airs to put it on the Cartoon Network Video servers or even to come up with random filenames to keep people from finding them.
If Cartoon Network's people actually waited until the day after the episode airs to upload them (which is actually when they're supposed to be on there), this wouldn't happen.
-
They usually upload clips or eps in an archive that automatically uploads on a certain date… and it's apparently super easy to access. As much as I'd want them to upload the day they air, I figured it must be a pain to manage doing just that with every other show on their channel. It's more ease for CN than anything, and I don't think that care much about thier stuff leaking. They could increase the security, but there's always ways around security (so why bother?)
-
It wouldn't be so bad if YouTube would stop recommending clips from said leaks
-
Recomendations take into account everything you ever seen, if you binge giant woman/strong in the real way/stronger than you/full we are the crystal gems/its over/I need change it will recomend SU later whether you are watching the Olympic's higligths or news or why the sky is blue.
And that security argument is patethic. Is like saying that you won't lock your doors because they can be blasted open!
-

The show´s general tone of progressiveness, tolerance and acceptance also lures a bigger amount fans/shippers.
It´s like Long John said. The fact that it´s a fairly progressive show, and pretty much the first one when it comes to these ideas will end getting a lot of attention by all kinds of idiots.I actually wonder what kind of reaction the Sadie/Lars joke on The uncle Grampa episode would have gotten if people gave a fuck about that particular pair.
-
Let's talk Sneeple.
Let's talk why Peridot is a weaker quality gem that she could be.
Let's talk why homeworld would need to make a world busting abomination.Could homeworld be facing a race of snake aliens in a war that predates the colonization of earth, and is losing because they couldn't get that jumping point into other star systems, lost a diamond, and need the cluster to keep on fighting, and have to preserve resources.
-
! The over dramatic acting lol, kinda hard to believe any of that was canon really. Too bad we'll probably never see the other lions.
-
Let's talk why homeworld would need to make a world busting abomination.
Fusions that are made out of multiple shards have a bunch of extra body parts. The first ship we saw from Homeworld was a giant hand and the second was a large eyeball.
The Cluster isn't just a planetbuster, it's also a mobile shipyard.

I don't know, the prototypes for the Cluster didn't seem to be anymore solid then any other Gem and both the handship and the red eye were solid enough to make shrapnel…
-
iirc peri seemed to imply that if the colony had been completed then the cluster wouldn't have been able to mature. I do wonder if they use it for other things as colonies progress but I don't think it's for ships

That could be explained by them reinforcing the ship while making it spaceworthy. Besides the whole body part aspect, there's a few things that they do to that give the suggestion of sentience; like the handship launching Peridot's escape pod by flicking it towards the planet.
iirc peri seemed to imply that if the colony had been completed then the cluster wouldn't have been able to mature. I do wonder if they use it for other things as colonies progress but I don't think it's for ships
The image we got of the finished colony definitely seems to be post-Cluster since the only intact area is the core.
!
The big holes would also lend themselves well to extracting the Cluster by cutting it into pieces.
-
I got the impression that the Cluster was an experiment done in the wake of the colony's failure. A last ditch effort to get something out of the planet that had taken too much in a costly war. The thing is made up of gem shards, and Garnet implies that they were from various Crystal Gems back in Keeping It Together. Experimenting on the corpses of your enemies to make a superweapon that will destroy the potential colony you're fighting this war for the right to build when it forms isn't something someone does when everything's going according to plan.
-
The cluster wasn't exactly in the core tho, it was actually down in the mantle (the crust maybe? I don't recall the exact part)
I've rewatched that ep a few times bc I need my fix after this last week lol. I do feel like the cluster is definitely an insurance policy but I think there's other uses for it too. Yellow diamond seemed pleased that it was progressing and that 'they'd get some use out of that miserable planet' or however she put it. Makes me think that there's more to it than we're aware of just yet, and the fact that the cluster is still actually bubbled on earth means that we're probably gonna find out sooner or later

! Is there anyone here who believes Rose's Lion and Pink Diamond arent related, and doesnt a theory about rose feeding the shards to lion or something, because that's what 90% of the reddit believes and some think rose spreading the shards around is beautiful rather than kind of messed up as I see it. Thoughts

Well, that thought hadn't even crossed my mind personally. That does seem a little disturbing.
-
I've been catching up with this show since about a week ago and I've been loving the shit out of it.
I'm up to 'Bismuth' at the moment. So far:
Favourite episode - Jailbreak
Favourite gem - Peridot
Favourite human - Greg Universe
Favourite song - It's Over, Isn't It
Waifu - Amethyst -
Yeah
! Stevonnie's singing.
-
! I've been waiting so long for Estelle to get another song and we got a knock out one (and the same one at comic con)
! Bonus points: Stevonnie singing -
The ep leaked a little early:
! Holy damn, that song, how is it possible that the music keeps getting better? I am so glad to hear Estelle sing, and Stevonnie, too! That was a really nice ep, letting Steven come to terms with the feels parade that was the end of season 3, and in a way where it's not all resolved, it's just in the process of healing.
! I think this episode also serves as an important parallel to Full Disclosure, where Steven was dealing with the increasing emotional stress of his life by shutting himself away from others and had to learn to open up to them. Here, he learns to open up to himself. With these two eps and the series as a whole so far, I feel like the biggest theme across it is acceptance, which is a beautiful thing for this show to be about. -
! Very pretty episode and a nice soundtrack to boot. While I don't really like Steven having PTSD as well it made more sense considering what's happened to him.
! Just glad it stayed one whole episode as apposed to dragging it out. -
God damned. Another A+ Quality episode to add alongside my list of top favorites.
-
Another important note: for those who didn't know, Takafumi Hori collabed with the team for some scenes on that ep. Yup, THAT Takafumi Hori.

Also, old comic, but very apt now:

That episode was just fantastic one of my top 5 easily. I would even say it's better than Mr.Greg.
-
It was a nice song but honestly Im still desperately yearning for the plot to move. Its probably because getting all those bombs through and shifting to slower paced weekly slice of life ( that I really like FTMP ) has given me major plot whiplash, I was dead set that a ton more things were gonna hit the fan in S3.
! The diamonds are going to make a move eventually right? We will see homeworld right?
! Its an OK song but part of me was thinking " cmon not another song…" MK might jump on this thread and call me a neanderthal but I was cool with a slice of life episode but then they had the twist and Im not sure how much I liked it.
! Beautiful Voices, beautiful art, and a great message but I felt the execution of it seemed a bit off and the pacing went really slow during the song, to really quick during the second part of it, I wonder if it would have worked better as two episodes.
! Also for a show that feels pretty natural with most their messages this felt a little ham fisted especially the Connie Part, I was thinking "that's stretching the grounded feel of the beach city residents" especially connie, like if the dude ran into her because he was running I would understand but it was such a light bump, it was almost like falcon punching someone tapping you on the shoulder. And I know that shouldnt matter because it being an unintentioned mistake was the point of it, but they portrayed it as if connie was being super paranoid when they didnt hint at that at all to begin with. It just seemed like they made the action OOC to address stevens problems in all honesty and there was barely anytime for that. It just felt kind of clumsy anyone else agree. Is there something wrong with me?

! I was expecting a Rose vs Stevonnie fight there for a second. Guess that has to wait until a Homeworld!Rose shows up.

Well, like Vonnegut said: "Be a sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them—in order that the [viewer] may see what they are made of."
And yeah, fantastic episode, even if I felt that Steven's breakdown kind of came out of nowhere.

You're definitely in the minority here. I can go on and gush about how much I loved the ep in ways, but that won't accomplish anything. I also can't blame you or anyone else for being plot-minded, especially when the plot is interesting, but I want to address it. It makes me think back to Garnet's conversation with Peridot back in Log Date. Peri asks Garnet why she's fused if she isn't doing anything important, and Garnet responds that she is doing something: stargazing. That's what even the most minor, seemingly inconsequential eps are. After all, being fiction, the plot isn't something that's any more objectively important than the rest. It's Steven Universe whether it's making things change drastically, or just sitting and back and watching the stars.
Plot and story aren't the same thing. Episodes where seemingly nothing is accomplished are integral to the story because they are the story. They embody and create its tone, develop its world and characters, and just let the same team express something with the language it's been building up.
With Steven Universe in particular, this even fits in thematically. Steven is half alien, but he's also half human, so it makes sense for both sides to be explored, in the way that Steven is both a silly child, and a creature of great cosmic importance. In Steven Universe, plot is only half the story, and it's just as important for it to get into the conflict between the Crystal Gems and Homeworld as it is to stargaze.

Good quote, haha.
I don't think this came out of nowhere, though. I think it parallels nicely with Full Disclosure, where Steven dealt with the fallout of Jailbreak. He's just a character that doesn't always want to stare the negative right in the face. When he tries to talk to Connie when she's upset, the advice he gives here is basically to ignore the problems. He was forced to confront that worldview, though, when it came into conflict with Garnet's advice. I dunno, I thought it all worked pretty well.

Yeah I usually still like these human episodes a lot too but this one just didnt reach me because the individual elements while good seemed like they didnt click as well in my opinion.
But I mean if a story reaches you emotionally you can overlook many differemt things in storytelling, with this one I was just confused as to why. Not saying its flawed objectively but It didnt hit me as hard as mr greg did.
I feel like two episodes could have done this more justice personally.
