Even if some stuff turns me a bit off, like the excessive hunting, you can instantly tell this manga is different. It is so weirdly engaging and, in a sense, cinematographic?
I know I prefer the chaos ensued by the 4 way battle between the 7th division, the ex-shinsengumi, Sugimoto + Asirpa and the batshit crazy escaped convicts in the search for gold over the tons of Ainu lore (which is admitedly greatly informative and appreciated) and overkill hunting scenes, but overall this manga is a delicacy.
This is elite stuff on every level. Art, writing, lore, action. . .really glad I came upon it.

What the fu. . .
For as brutal as this manga can be, the comedy is pretty on-point as well. Not only that, but the way that the author can weave fights and humor together without them seeming like "manga moments" is really impressive.
I wonder how long this will run (and how long until it gets an anime)?
So i started the serie because of the good review and the fast recent releases. I must say i had some prejudice based on the plot resume.
It is funny that Dungeon Mechi has similar praise at the same time because they have some common points in the way they mix cooking and adventure ; comedy and action. Though this one is much more mature and even have some gore pages (thankfully it i B&W)
I also hope its succes in Japan helps the Ainou culture and people.

Shiraishi is just upset he got called useless a while back
he wanted to prove his worth by taking out one of the other treasure hunters but he failed & got captured by them so he agreed to play the double agent role for them while actually keeping track on what they're doing
he didn't tell Sugimoto & Asirpa about it because he knows they would stop him
IN THE ESCAPE KING I BELIEVE

he is certainly a double agent against his will and he didn’t tell his friends because it put him in danger. But maybe it would be safer if he trusts them. But it is also true that being infiltred in the enemy side could be useful.
I also have faith in him but for the moment he is not in a good situation either

He definitely hit the binoculars. You can see that in the last panel, plus the author carefully made Ogata ask for them earlier just to set this up. Pretty clever, honestly.
But how will Tanigaki get out of this? I'm guessing the guy that got brutalized by the bear is out of the fray, but Ogata still has bullets left. Maybe Tanigaki will play mind games if his enemies don't know he has no more bullets left?
Nikaido was one of the twins who kept harassing Sugimoto when the military group captured him, but who was Ogata? Did Sugimoto give him those scars?
edit - did some re-reading, he was the sniper from one of the early chapters who got knocked into the river. I guess I forgot he survived.
