Sanji's going to be yamchaed by Sabo. He even ate the Mera-Mera.
Chapter 794: Sabo's Adventure
-
-
By the way, one of the Revolutionaries looks strangely like Bartholomew Kuma !
…that's because it is Kuma?
-
…that's because it is Kuma?
How can it be Kuma, this is the present not a flashback, I pointed out this before, called him Kuma jr, I'm almost sure its related to Kuma though, guy is huge and has a bear theme like him.
-
I think it's one of Kuma's fans, the equivalent of Barto with Luffy.
-
I've already said it, but I hope this becomes a thing, even if poor Operator Guy is gonna suffer because of it.
!
!
-
It seems like Amnesia was the name of a dog that once bit some of you guys' testicles off or something.
After 17 years, Oda just used the amnesia card. I would've preferred something more creative? Of fucking course. But it works? Yes.
Can we cut the drama down a bit?
Agreed. Amnesia is cliche but it works here. Kid got his face blasted off by a cannon ffs And even how he remembered was a realistic emotional trigger.
Just be grateful we didn't have to suffer with an arc where Luffy finds Sabo working as a waiter and tries to get Sabo's memories back shudders
Though then again…
that might not have been so bad…
-
It never gets old to see the operator getting yelled at.
-
Why no team up Bellamy with Cavendish and Barto? Could be a hilarious spin-off series, those three, loosely following the strawhats because something between hate-love and complete admiration.
A spin-off series ? With those three madmen ? I'll jump on that bandwagon. That would be real awesome !!!
-
Cavendish as Moe.
Bellamy as Larry.
And Barto as Curly. -
The farewell of the gladiators is definitely one of the things I'm looking most forward to in the near future. Some characters I can see leaving early or without a goodbye, like Elizabello or Orlumbus. The Kanokuni gang will probably give their regards and pledge future support, and Barto will obviously blubber over everything. There's room for him to do more than just simply part ways, but the most interesting farewells will probably be those of Cavendish and Bellamy, since those two are the ones who have experienced the most change to their characters this arc.
I could easily see Bellamy joining Barto's crew, for instance, but I think Cavendish will go his own way with a newfound respect for the Worst Generation, or at least some of its members.
-
Pretty good chapter. A let-down compared to last week's but it was still fine.

Can someone just shop this imaginary BBC alliance onto all the Luffy-Law-Smoker art out there? Please?

I'd like to hear some very concrete reasons why the amnesia play was allegedly a bad one for Sabo as a character or bad for the story. From what I've seen people's only beef with it seems to be "it's cliche". But I'd argue that it's arguably not. Cliche, at least according to all the top results on Google, implies something that's so overused and drab that it's become trite by default. It has a negative connotation. That, in my opinion, is not true for amnesia, because it would effectively imply that no author should ever use amnesia in a story. It's a very popular trope and it can certainly be trite if used badly, but with good execution there's nothing wrong with going for it. In principle it's no different from the much-derided "power of friendship"-boost from Usopp to Luffy in Enies Lobby yet that was a magnificent moment because of its strong execution and because Oda hasn't overused it in the context of his own work, which would be a way to quickly make it start feeling trite.
So I wonder if the problem here isn't that people were a bit too confident in their expectations of what the explanation would be, or rather, confident in their expectations of Oda to pull something really creative or unique and totally unpredictable from his sleeve. Instead he used a simple and perfectly logical explanation that gave us, in my humble opinion, and as someone who hasn't even been much of a fan of Sabo in this arc, one of the most heartrending and moving scenes we've seen in the manga for a very long time. Nothing else than memory loss could have given us this scene. Amnesia is, arguably, the only truly good, in-character explanation for why he never contacted Luffy pre-skip, as well as for why he abandoned his brothers all those years and abandoned their joint dream of piracy to join the Revolutionaries. In addition, this play gives Sabo a completely different dynamic than either of his brothers. I for one find it really cool and if anything less "generic" that he didn't abandon piracy for Dragon out of gratitude but actually grew up a full-fledged Revolutionary to the bone.
So I'm not saying everyone has to like it, if you honestly feel it's so overused that you can't appreciate it any context ever anymore that's up to you, but I have yet to see a concrete reason why it was, to put it that way, bad or at the very least not particularly good writing. I think it's perfectly sound writing and can't see how it clashes with anything pre-established or makes Sabo a less effective character.
-
I'm confused about one particular part in this chapter, apparently Ace had met up with Sabo and told him Luffy was his brother? is that a mistranslation or what's going on there?
-
How can it be Kuma, this is the present not a flashback, I pointed out this before, called him Kuma jr
I like that naming convention.
I'm almost sure its related to Kuma though, guy is huge and has a bear theme like him.
Precisely my point.
The chances of this big dude not being related in any way to Kuma is 0.
Whether it's his consciousness in a new body, or some other contrived plot device though, for all intents and purposes, it's going to be Bartholomew Kuma.

Bro, if you don't see it by now I'll spell it out for you. Most the people (and I say most, not all) that are complaining about this apparent cop out are the people that want reasons to dislike Sabo, because they simply don't like him to begin with and they want more validity to their dislike of him, instead what they have now is they're starting to like him and they can't help it because the writer wants him to be liked. If they like Luffy and Ace, Sabo is practically a part of that trio too. Watch people get defensive, but the people that do get defensive are the people who have had to swallow that pill that was forced down their throats this chapter, that Sabo, for all intents and purposes, is a likeable character and a badass too.
-
I'm confused about one particular part in this chapter, apparently Ace had met up with Sabo and told him Luffy was his brother? is that a mistranslation or what's going on there?
I was confused at first too, but I think he meant that he remembered everything with Ace's death.

My only problem with the amnesia is it makes his reason for joining the revolutionaries weaker. Before this I would have thought his experiences in Goa led to him wanting to create a better world. Now it just seems like Sabo joined up because it was them that found him. Had a Marine picked him up, he would have joined the Marines, etc.
That being said, I did like the scene of the memories returning to Sabo, and it was a good way of resolving the issue of why he wasn't at Marineford
-
I'd say it makes it different moreso than weaker. If it were due to his experiences in Goa he would have had an active reason to join them. Now it's more like he didn't even need a reason - they were his only family, the only people in his life, he grew up with them, was treated with respect and found himself among their ideals from the get go. Those ideals should have harmonized pretty well with his personality already molded by the experiences he had even if he didn't remember them. I'm not so sure he would have necessarily joined the Marines; I guess it would depend on which kind of Marine picked him up. If he found himself with the "Akainu" type Marine I imagine he would probably have once again ran away from home pretty quickly. He might have been become a "Garp" if he was picked up by a "Smoker" or "Aokiji", but that's a rather unusual Marine then.
What I like about this is that it gives us something pretty different. Sabo is now truly Sabo the Revolutionary, to the very bone, rather than Sabo the disgruntled child of nobles and aspiring pirate who decided to abandon piracy and become one out of gratitude or seeing what they were about, with his core character and personality still remaining intact since the Revs' ideals are pretty in line with freedom and all that. Only as an adult did his childhood memories come back to him. It ends up being a rather cool reversal and in that sense this route is more unexpected than I saw anyone really predict, and I haven't really seen anyone note this side of things either.
-
so why is that particular part in quotes as if it were Ace saying it? :/
it's what he said to himself i guess
-
The amnesia thing is logic and coherent but uninteresting. And I read with the expectative to read interesting stories. That's how I see it.
And yes, I really like Sabo.
-
Sorry if this has been asked and answered before, but why does Sabo need a piece of a Vivre card that leads to himself?
-

So when he's about to kick the bucket we can have our Impel Down V2.
But I guess Luffy getting his own vivre card is symbolic of all the allies who will meet/help him when the end nears.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think that made any sense. :wassat:

yup. me too.. the chapter is very good because I like Sabo and it tells his past story so I can know more about him.. But, I feel that this chapter is not connected with previous chapter.. hmm, since there'll be break next week, I hope that next chapter Oda will deliver us more interesting story, I really miss Sanji n Chopper group..
-
Thanks for the reply, but I don't think that made any sense. :wassat:
Ace gave Luffy a vivre card that leads to himself so that Luffy could find him. If that's what Sabo is doing here, then it's the same thing. Otherwise, Sabo tore off a piece of Luffy's card that will lead him to Luffy.
-
Thanks for the reply, but I don't think that made any sense. :wassat:
This is Luffy's card. Not Sabo's.
We don't know how Sabo made it so fast. -
Don't really want to butt in since I find this super dumb but guys amnesia isn't BS just because it has been used before in other series, its not like Oda has used it before or overused it so complaining about it and calling it convinient makes no sense, don't like because you find it cliché sure but it ends there, its not dumb, its not convinient, it makes sense from the story stand point and Sabo only appearing now, what explanation did you want?
-
Guys Vivre Cards don't link to the person. Vivre Cards link to other pieces of Vivre Cards (I think to the biggest one).
See Rayleigh going to Island of Women leaving his Vivre Card to Shakky so strawhats could eventually go back to Sabaody.Even if…
Luffy followed the Vivre Card in Impel Down...Ok, how do they work exactly?
-
Looking at that cover feels so weird
Often these random character + animal covers have good-natured characters hanging with critters and whatnot, seeing a psychopath like Doffy play around with a Flamingo is so outlandish -

Your theory works, except for one little detail.
Lola's Vivre Cards points to her mother, but she ripped it in front of Nami. -
I always thought that they go to the largest piece. I thought that Sabo made one for himself and then gave the larger piece to Luffy. Or did he amok one for Luffy? Now I'm confused. Though i don't think it would actually matter cuz if Luffy held the biggest piece of Sabos then anyone with a piece of it would go towards Luffy even though its Sabos. Wow this is a lot more confusing then i first thought…
-
-
This is Luffy's card. Not Sabo's.
We don't know how Sabo made it so fast. You sure that's Luffy's vc? That would make sense since Sabo took a small piece along with him.
It's just that in both ms and mr translations, Sabo says "this is a vc FOR Luffy" not "this is a vc of Luffy."
-

I'm pretty sure as Zoro was surprised by how fast it was made.
If Luffy gives part of this card to the gladiators we will know for sure. -
I predict Oda will continue to ignore Sanji, Brooke, Nami, and Chopper and instead focus on Cavendish, Bartolomeo, and many other side characters who have all already gotten more screen time than all of the strawhat characters except Luffy and Franky. If we find out they have been kidnapped, I will definitely consider that ignoring them because it is basically guaranteeing them not being part of the crew for about 6 to 7 years, which is pathetic. That doesnt even take into account Brooke and Chopper's absence from the manga as a whole.
I bet if you count the manga panels that Buggy has gotten more panels than Brooke has. I would also bet that Bon Clay and other characters have had more manga panels than Brooke.
Oda has completely forgotten how to write a strawhats pirate arcs even though he is sticking to his stupid formula for arcs (which is a whole other can of worms). He does not know how to write a strawhat pirate arc after Sabaody Archipelago. We have had Amazon Lily, Impel Down, Marineford, Sabo, and Dressrosa. And now we are about to get a freaking Kidnapp arc…..
In the New World the Strawhat pirate crew has been nothing but running jokes and gags that have made most of them look like jokes that do not belong in the New World. Its like Sanji learned nothing from his training other than an outdated grand line skill and his same old attack. This is the New World, not the Grand Line. Same thing with Nami, Chopper, Brooke, Usopp, and Robin...
Brooke's new ability is cool. Sanji and Chopper had so much potential and it seems that none of that potential was capitalized on. Instead we got super powerful Franky who has gotten more manga panels and more badass moments than the entire crew combined excluding Luffy.

This don't make sense considering that a Vivre card not only points to a person but also represents their life-force, example: Ace, the closer Ace life was coming to an end the more his Vivre card burns off…
Ace Vivre card started burning from thriller bark and when Ace died his Vivre card disappeared.... So I'm guessing at some point we will start seeing Luffy Vivre card burning out when he start fighting a yonko(indicating that his life may end) which will make Sabo running to luffy's aid.

You do realize it has been only one chapter post-Dressrosa finished? I understand people want to see the other side of the Straw Hats, but it wasn't really realistic to go back to them when we have to focus on the here and now, which in OP world was on Dressrosa and Luffy fighting Doflamingo. We'll get to the others soon, probably in two or three chapters. It just takes time with so much to address.
-
Ok on the subject of the vivre card, according to op wiki page it says that small pieces of the vivre card point to the largest piece, and the largest piece points to the person the card is tied to.
This would make sense that Sabo gave Zoro his own vc but took a small piece for himself, so that Sabo can find Luffy if needed (the small piece points to the big piece that is in the possession of the strawhats), and Luffy can also find Sabo since the big piece would point to Sabo.

Don't want to sound mean, but I find it amusing that you're so up in arms about Brook's treatment, yet you consistently spell his name wrong =P

If its introducing a Kidnap arc, I will just not consider Sanji, Brooke, Nami, and Chopper as Strawhat pirates anymore. In fact we can just get rid of everyone except Luffy, Franky and Zoro if Oda keeps this crap up. Bring Cavendish, Cavendish's horse if its still alive, Jinbei, and Bartolomeo as replacements.

Or it could be that I have been reading different scanlations and it was spelled Brooke for me for so long that it has been stuck like that for me.
