I thought the opening episode of season 2 was actually really good. I'm really interested how this alternate version will turn out. The insert song at the end was great, a certain scene from the manga is gone, but it's understandable considering what path they seem to be going in, there's zero censorship and the intersting ideas still shine through and the animation is great.

Seeing Kaneki with Stockholm Syndrome in the anime was amazing :ninja:
-
I really do wonder why he did that. It even makes sense with the Banjo stuff being cut out in the anime, and sort of the background crew being gone and just Kaneki and Touka there at the end because that's the core which the anime kept, trimming away exposition and minor characters - which is why I'm not angry at it, it kept what really mattered from the story and character perspective because in truth world-building and mechanics are one of the least important parts of a story. This is all thought through with all the stuff in mind which was skipped around in the first season. It's not lazy random changes, it's really trying to tell it's own story, thumbs up from me for that. How Kaneki is all around framed feels very delibrate, too. Hopefully it turns out good.
-
I was being sarcastic, I hated it! Because it doesn't make sense at all! This will need to be super well explained in the future. I hope that at least they are able to do that.
Do you know what makes even less sense? That Aogiri Tree accepts a Stockholm Syndrome victim, in which syndrome was made by them, with open arms without any problem. Because you know, is normal for a person that you kidnap and torture and that moments before killed one of your members and was fighting against other, to be happy and willing to join in your crusade.
Something that makes even less sense than that? That Aogiri Tree killed a lot of his members just for kicks. Basically for all that arc the only thing that they got was Kaneki. So I must believe that Tatara is this retarded(or maybe genius?) person that to recruit a member, kidnap him, tortures him, lets his group get attacked by a raid, and then auto destructs the facility with everybody inside!
But taking all these and the horrible pacing(Super fast in some portions, super slow in others(Is amazing how people complain about Toei for making a 40 seconds scene with everything almost static, but say nothing when Pierrot makes 2 or 3 scenes in the same episode)) it was good.
Also totally disagree with a lot of things you say above.
-
I got a feeling you were being sarcastic. It's really obvious to me there is a reason, this episode shoved it in our faces most of the time that there must be a reason through it's cinematography. How Kaneki is framed this episode - shots of his eyes and face and especially the eerie moment with Eto. They aren't there for nothing. I'm thinking it's something Eto said to him. There's a reason Kanou and Kuro and Shiro were also shown, too. There's also a reason the season's called root A(ogiri). But of course, we can just disagree because basically I don't agree with anything especially the bit with comparison to Toei. To me it seems the budget has considerably improved - the action scenes looked decent and the quiet scenes were nicely directed, the action scenes also weren't censored. Guess we each watched an entirely different episode, haha.
-
You seriously don't believe that minor characters, proper exposition, and world building should be excluded and that they aren't a major part of story telling? That's laughable. Just like this episode.
-
No they aren't :P Well to elaborate, they aren't THAT important generally speaking, I'd probably put world-building details as the least important thing about a story.
To me the character and theme are the core of a story. Always. If I don't care about the characters I can't care about the story or the world. It's been like this with most series. But it's an unpopular opinion, I guess? You can care about all the types of quinques and kagunes that are in the world of Tokyo Ghoul (which was the biggest part which was skipped in the anime - skipping all the exposition about that really didn't change anything in my eyes? Does that make sense?), but I care about Kaneki's and Touka's character arcs and relationships. You can care about well-developed the Sabaody Archeplago or Water 7 worlds are, but I cared about that the crew was falling apart. I cared about the fact that their friendship was put on a test and what I cared about at Marineford was the aftermath when Luffy's dream was wavering, what Garp was going through etc, though the fancy attacks certainly added to the whole thing. Dunno if my point makes sense. World-building can certainly help, but it's also the thing that can be the least developed, but still make for a good story because the plot, themes and characters are great.
-
I certainly hope that there is a reason! A good one and that is presented well!
But still, it doesn't make the things that happened in this episode anything better.
I don't think the cinematography gave any hint about that either. And if that was the intention, than it was badly done.
Showing Eto teleporting for around 40 seconds and than showing Kaneki going away isn't a good way to give the hint that they got a conversation(or that Eto said something).
Kanou, Kuro and Shiro appearing is just that, them appearing! It was basically to show to the watcher, this characters are in this show. Just like the Pierrot too.About the name of the season, that is because it will happen in Aogiri, if it really has any connection. But that has nothing to do with the problems. So they wanted to make a show centered in Aogiri and with Kaneki entering the organization. Thus that make it OK, for Aogiri and Kaneki to act retarded in the 1st episode, just to force that path? NO!
! Tokyo Ghoul:RE has Kaneki in the CCG, but that was made properly.
-
It's kind of a basic story-telling expectation to explain the main twist setting up a series to me. Knowing the mangaka himself wrote it, too. Like, it's a big deal, with an insert song and heartbroken Touka, do you really expect how strange it is not be addressed at all? It's like when people complained about those three panels of Doflamingo backstory not being sufficent and being disappointing. It's pretty obvous it was going to be elaborated if you ever have read a story before - if they aren't I will call the story out on it, but as far as I'm concerned it's pretty obvious there will be reasons. Seeing how harsh you are I'm not sure if you'd be happy with ANY explanation, though.
-
You're not understanding me! The problem here is not the later explanation! I hope and expect for one. The problem is in the twist! Is bad! The way the characters acted is bad and the way it was presented also was. Later Explanation will only make damage control, and only for Kaneki actions, unless there is other explanation for why Aogiri did what they did in this episode(something that I don't believe it will happen).
Twist is something unexpected, but that doesn't mean that something unexpected is automatically well made. Bleach is a awesome example of this. It has horrible twists, but fans disregard the problems of it because they are twists.
Also comparing the Doflamingo Backstory where those panels were obviously used as snapshots of his past, is something totally different from what happened in this episode. In that part the only problem was if Oda would show more or not. Here that is totally not the problem. The problem is the content shown, and not that it was only shown a little part of the whole.
This was obviously a forced way to connect the things from where they left of in the last season with the new path they want to take the story.
In the end this is just a bump in the road when redirecting to a new path, so it really doesn't matter. We will see 11 episodes already in the new path, 92% of story, if those episodes are well made or not is the most important to see. -
Oh. You just don't like how it's done because it doesn't feel natural and just sorta tacked on to go to that other direction the writers wanted it to go in. I have faith in everything to be explained, along with why Aogiri blew up that building and why they accepted Kaneki in the first place.
I don't know how to argue that other than "I think it worked(?)" I find arguing about execution and pacing the worst. Even the first season people keep saying it's rushed, but I feel like it still has weight despite the quick pacing. Different strokes for different folks. I guess? We'll see. I don't know what else to say here. -
My thoughts on Tokyo Ghoul A - episode 1 in summary:
- "Hmm. There seems to be a lack of censorship in this already. I'm in."
- "There seems to be less dialogue than necessary/usual here. Is the author going for a visual storytelling approach?"
- "Kaneki's fight against Ayato was cut short. I wonder why that is…"
- "Why is there an earthquake going on everywhere? What caused it I wonder?"
- "Kaneki: Take her and go. *suddenly leaves without further word"
- Kaneki: (Randomly wandering through the rubble) Oh hey a teleporting owl girl giggled. owl dissapears
- Kaneki: (Fuck it, I'm going to Aogiri)
- "This development is actually really interesting. Can't wait for more"
- Roll awesome credits
-
Did Kaneki at least "half-killed" him?
-
He didn't. It makes sense with where the story went.

Blasphemy!
Where can a guy see a 17-year old kid break half of the bones of a younger kid on the TV these days?! -
Another is that the mangaka Ishida Sui is working on the storyboards this time around, in order to tell a story that wasn’t told in the manga. Some reports suggest it’s going to abandon the source material and instead go completely anime-original.

Blasphemy!
Where can a guy see a 17-year old kid break half of the bones of a younger kid on the TV these days?!I think that scene was channeling some Hunter X Hunter intentions, if you get me.
It's a subversion of that shonen moment, like when Goku powers up and decimates his opponents no sweat. But in Tokyo Ghoul, we suddenly learn Ayato was actually protecting Touka(making him not so bad)…before the fight ended, and before he got half killed. And Kaneki just tortures him, just like Jason did to him. At that point Kaneki really had no reason to that, so really that was nothing but a dick move.
So, just like HxH, it seems badass at first glance, but really seems to convey other intentions.
-
Kaneki had no reason? First Ayato beat Touka in Anteiku and helped kidnapping Kaneki, that was the reason why he was tortured. Later he beat again Touka and even eat her Kagune. Also he was a "captain" from Aogiri Tree, that was kidnapping and slaving other Ghouls and were killing people in an organized fashion.
So saying that Kaneki didn't had reason for doing that is stupid. Kaneki had reasons even to kill him, but he didn't do it because he was Touka only sibling. The only thing that scene show is that Kaneki turned into a sadist, by "loving" causing pain to his enemies.Just because Ayato was protecting someone, doesn't mean he wasn't doing a lot of shit beside that. Also, his way to protecting Touka was a really bad one! Since when beating to a pulp and humiliating is a good way to protect someone?

Ghoul regeneration is a tricky thing. Luffy can conveniently beat up someone and put him out of business for long enough, but he'll still be find and dandy later on. If Kaneki could easily break Ayato, he could have probably found a better way to subdue/defeat him. The idea is still there, the "badass" act is a far cry from the timid Kaneki before.
The thing about protecting Touka is she would have been killed/tortured by Jason. You could compare it to Gin taking on Sanji instead of letting Pearl beat him up. Misguided, definitely an asshole, but as the flashback showed, deep down he's simply an angry little kid, who is later utterly crushed by Kaneki.
-
Ayato is still an asshole and should suffer the same punishment in any source of media.

How about adding the discussion to the original Tokyo Ghoul thread rather than this one?

Hey wait, I agree. I was about to go all, "lyke omg did u zee the new chap!? Let me tell you EVERYTHING." and now I don't want to spoil it…

Yeah, now that makes more sense.

Chapter 12
Hey Gourmet old buddy.
Next Chapter: Crossdressing! -
This post is deleted!
-
aaand chapter 12 is out.
I pretty much laughed out loud at the final page. Also, is that shillouette Amon? Plus some Touka and Sasaki interaction. A solid chapter!
-
That last page… yeah. As someone else said, tumblr is gonna have some fun with the next chapter (I mean, there are already enough crossdressing fanarts without the manga providing material...)
-
Haise: "Guys…."
Haise: "I have an idea."

Haise: "We'll become girls."

Theory: Tokyo Ghoul re is a fanservice oriented series.

I chuckled a bit when I saw the last page. Next chapter is going to be fascinating with them crossdressing.
Also, really liked seeing Amon and hopefully we'll get to see more of him in the coming chapters. Really curious what happened to him and most of all what has he been up to.

Are you talking about the shadow on page 19?

Are you talking about the shadow on page 19?
Yeah, that dude is either Amon or Batman imo :ninja:
@Piitan Your Signature: All thanks to Master Roshi, if you know what I mean :ninja:
-
Are you talking about the shadow on page 19?
I am, indeed. Speculation seems to be that it is Amon. The shadow also looks like him to me so I'm just going along with it
-
Apparently Batman Amon was foreshadowed in Chapter 124, as pointed out by the Imperial Scans comments section.
[hide][/hide]
And damn, chapter 124 is a treasure trove of foreshadowing. Amon will have the owl's kagune, and essentially dress and look the part of the One-eyed Owl, who killed Akira's mother. Amon and Akira kiss in this very chapter. The conflict and tragedy! All according to Ishida's plan. damn.
On a side note, I prefer cross hatching to screen tone anyday, but I quite like how the second panel is done, gives a sense of volume and value and…light.

Is there really a point to ressurect the old thread since everyone should be caught up with :re here and this is anime original anyway? Dunno.
This week's episode was all character exposition. I actually like that we got to see some more Touka when she almost completely dissappeared for a time in the manga.
Also, was dark hair Arima in the manga? I don't recall much of him aside from the end. I like it. I think I also know what drove Kaneki to join Aogiri. It's related to the resolve he had during the torture - he decided to no longer be passive and wishes to protect Anteiku. It's the same as the manga, but with the added thing that he joined Aogiri instead. I'm really curious about where the Eto stuff will go. The plot with the Aogiri in the manga kinda was there, but it didn't really lead anywhere? It might be that it comes up in the manga eventually, but for a while there was sort of mentions of it, but then the focus shifted. -
This episode had way more canon material than I expected. Also seems like the pace slowed down. About time. Still not exactly keen on Aogiri Kaneki but we're still only 2 eps in so that still has the potential to change. If the pace is more normalized like this for the rest of the season I'll be fine. The pacing of season 1 and then the first episode last week was driving me insane.

The clowns are on the move too. -
Chapter 13
Yay, the Pierots! -
Presenting; the fabulous Quinx squad!

Nico with an afro sure is weird. Also, I wonder if giving the height and weight of everyone when they are introduced will be some kind of plot point.

My god, this thread is so empty.
Chapter 14 -
So many death flags
Mutsuri is an ass btw
-
I might have gotten this completely wrong, but is Urie supposed to be Saiko´s brother or something along those lines? (Chapter 13)
-
I'm just a little annoyed that they keep bringing up old characters at the end of the chapter, with only one liners or no line s at at all. I get it, you wanna make it special and focus on the new characters, but we can't do that if you bring up old characters we also loved and tease us with them looking older and staring off into the distance.
Maybe things will kick off into high gear with Ayato. I hope so anyway. I need my kaneki back in my life.
-
The Washuu? Okay, I'm a bit skeptical about a Ghoul exterminating clan founding the CCG. Wasn't it mentioned that the CCG initially used firearems and that it was a pain in the ass to kill Ghouls that way? How on earth was there an elite clan going around murdering dozens of Ghouls at a time. I suppose they would aim for the eyes (only weak spot/place to inject RC suppressant), but here they don't seem to suggest such.
Some samurai clan going around exterminating Ghoul with…katanas? I don't think so. It was a strong point made that only Ghouls could hurt other Ghouls. Remember Kaneki stabbing himself with a knife? One of the more intense scenes in this series? Surprise Ishida Sui doesn't seem to remember that. I thougth he was one of those mangaka who remember every single thing about there manga(Oda).
On a brighter note, I expect Tokyo Ghoul to have better usage of German than Bleach.

I mean, it's Bleach you're talking about here. It shouldn't be that hard.

The anime's been doing a good job with presenting the character stuff from the manga, but the newest episode really did drive home the issues it had, in that everything else is not that exciting; to add to that, it looked really ugly. Weakest ep so far, including the first season.
For the recent chapters, I also really like the character writing; I've really grown to like his squad a lot in these 14 chapters.
