Goddamn! I swore to myself I wasn't going to read the manga before finishing the anime, but those cliffhangers on Parasyte are killing me.
Animation Fall 2014

FSN was solid this week. I really like how Shirou and Rin are being fleshed out and how their ideologies are being explored. Also, the action scenes still look really good. It's not insane as episode 3 was, but it's still a solid ep.
-
You know, while I wouldn't go as far as Enzeru, I still have to say that stay night is way more inferior to zero than I'd like. Like, I knew it wouldn't measure up to Fate/Zero, but here I am somewhat underwhelmed by most scenes that don't involve Servants hitting each other or Masters throwing shiny spells at each other.
-
Welp, FSN is basically a kids version of the Holy Grail War. If the servants are anything like in Fate Zero we're certainly going to get something good out of it, though.

I actually had somewhat similar feelings towards the first half of Fate/Zero. Overall I thought it was good, but not really amazing? The first episode was a boring exposition-fest and the exposition/non-action epsides weren't really as well-directed as the current FSN, so despite still having stellar art and some spectacular action scenes, it didn't really blow me away in terms of substance. It's the second half that brought everything together which blew me away, though.
As slow as the last two eps were, I'm just curious about everything. I know some of the spoilers and seen the Fate route and it's wonderful sexism, but Ufotable is fixing that part. I have no idea how said spoilers I know come together in the story, though.
Anyway. This week's Bahamut also slowed down for some exposition and world-building stuff. It was probably the weakest episode so far, but I don't think it was bad. Sort of explained a lot of unclear things.
-
Not my favorite, but I prefer this week's bahamut over the last one. Looks like we will get a lot of action in the next episode.

I feel that any random chat involving Broscandar engaged me most of what I'm seeing here. Captain Hero Boyscout and Tsunderosaurus simply aren't as interesting to me as… mostly everyone in F/Z. Though it starting with verbose nonsense and circlewalk infodumping (not like that isn't present here every other episode. Kirei himself seems to have mastered the art of circling exposition... dude learned form the best after all!), it introduced a varied cast of characters and established their motivations and then it was all backstabs and conspiracies and sneak attacks and twists and turns from there on. Here the focus seems to be squarely on Shirou and Rin, where as F/Z switched around POV's, sometimes several times per episode. I don't expect that to change seeing how it's based on a game where Shirou is a player character. I don't really find these two nearly as compelling yet. It's like that one episode of F/Z that I was really annoyed by, the one about child Rin, except it's the entire show, but a tad less jarring and with neat fight scenes. It's really harder to take the Grail War when you go from the Game of Servants that was the fourth war to highschoolers fighting an evil loli wherein one displays BURNING HEART OF JUSTICE and the other is like "IT'S NOT LIKE YOU MAKE ME FEEL FLUSTERED AT TIMES OR ANYTHING, BAAAAAKA" and then they go to school while some comic relief lady provides comic relief.
Like, I know there's a point to Shirou being an awkward unnatural degenerate and that this route is supposed to call him out on it, actual point of his character yada yada, I know I've heard about it nd I am looking forward to it. I'm actually still enjoying this series despite sounding so negative, but I fully understand how one could feel underwhelmed coming off of F/Z if they were expecting something more similar.
-
Ehh.. I think Shirou and Rin already are clearly more than just their archtypes. Especially Rin, I feel is really forced into that archtype when her deal really is trying to be who she's not, she tries so hard to be the cold-hearted magus she thinks she's supposed to be, but in truth that's not who she is. Same how you can already tell Shirou's "hero of justice" shtick is actually the consequence of horrible trauma and Kiritsugu's influence. It's a huge flaw. He's too good of a person and because he's so naive, he should be dead, why do you think Rin was so angry at him? It's not just "tsun" behavior. I find them interesting in their own way.
While Fate/Zero started off with a larger cast, it didn't really develop them as much at first. For the first half, the only characters that I really liked were Lancer, Iskandar and Waver. Everyone else I was sort of indifferent towards for a while, I guess. But as it went on all of them got fleshed out, once Kirei became interesting he became really interesting, for example. I'm just curious what the other masters and servants will be like. Will it be as focused on just Shirou and Rin as it seems to be? It's clearly designed to be a sequel to Fate/Zero, even the same person who wrote the F/Z anime script is in charge of writing the FSN anime script, while Kinoku Nasu is just credited as original creator, he's not actually writing the anime.
Truth is, I'm not sure which one is better atm (comparing the first halves). Shirou and Rin might not be as awesome as Iskandar and Waver, they're still interesting in their own way and the exposition stuff is way more interesting to look at in FSN.
While in F/Z Iskandar and Waver had a great chemistry from the start, while everyone else was sort of bland at first and the exposition was kind of a bore to sit through and look at. It was just a lot of talking heads, while FSN is lively all the time. -

Fate Stay/Night has three routes that each had different characters in the spotlight. For example, Caster did very little in the fate route, but is very prevalent in the Unlimited Blade Works Route. Because of this structure, and because this anime seems to be following the UBW route pretty closely, some characters will probably not get much of a chance to shine, while others will get a lot more spotlight. But yeah, the UBW route is focused most heavily or Rin, Shiro, and Archer
-
That's what I'm curious about because apparently the fight between Rin and Ilya in episode 3 wasn't really there in the VN, and the scene with Ilya wasn't either from what I understand. Maybe they'll mix in stuff from other routes? I've seen quite a bit of the Fate route (seemed like a huge mess), but not everything, but apparently some of the scenes from the opening indicate stuff from there, too, or at least might show that there is more focus on stuff that's focused in other routes.
-
Well, they did say that they were going to add new scenes that weren't in the original VN, but I think they won't be mixing in stuff from the other routes. The Illya scenes in particular didn't show up in any of the 3 routes, so I think it's more of an expansion of existing material in UBW rather than mixing in other routes.

An update of my impression mid-season :
High+ : Log Horizon S2, YowaPedal S2, Psycho Pass S2, Terra Formars (+1), Shingeki no Bahamut (+1)
High : Parasyte, Garo, Seven Sins, World Trigger, Ronja (+1)
Mid : Magic Kaito, Inou Battle, Chaika S2, Gundam G
Low : Vanadis, Karen Senki (-1)
Low- : Cross Ange -
New FSN.
Called it. There was a lot more focus on other masters and servants this episode. It's the weakest episode so far animation-wise and all still set up, but I liked it. I get the feeling the first half mostly will be set up like this and all the character development will pay off in the second half. -
Fate Stay Night
! I thought that the samurai of the opening was Myamoto Musashi. Wrooong! But I wasn't too far. Hopefully my other predictions regarding the servants will be more accurate…or not!
By the way wasn't Sasaki Kojiro deaf ? -

By the way wasn't Sasaki Kojiro deaf ?No. That's entirely fictional characterization in Vagabond by Inoue.
There was never such claims about Kojiro being deaf, not even in the novelization of Miyamoto Musashi (which, by the way, is already mostly fiction) that Inoue based Vagabond on.
It's 100% Inoue's fiction. -
! By the way wasn't Sasaki Kojiro deaf ?
In Vagabond. I don't think the real one was deaf.
Edit: Ninja'd by Bluebeard.
-
Oh ok. Well that's slightly less epic. Yohohoho! Thanks for the info anyway.
PS: I've started reading Vagabond a few months ago out of interest for one particular member of the forum. -
Hatoko's rant on the latest episode of Inou Battle was amazing. I'm liking this anime more and more. A good surprise of this season.
-
I kinda dropped Inoue at around episode 3, are the other episodes more of the same or do they get significantly better?
-
More of the same, except this episode is better.
-
This season I managed to find a surprisingly satisfying combination of visual entertainment. 10 shows, all having their own merits, made it on my list and manage to keep me entertained pretty nicely. Now, if we put away the comedy shows like Denki-gai etc and Danna ga bla bla, it's Parasyte and Psycho-Pass that make the top of the list. The former I took a while to warm up to but since that happened, I cannot stop looking forward to it every week. While the latter, mostly due to its perfect number of episodes and compact storytelling, is on its way to surpass its predecessor. The antagonist is deliciously evil and shaping up into the perfect big bad the series needs. His end, however, which we can all agree needs to be satisfying and in my eyes better than Makishima's, will be the deciding factor upon which to judge the show. That and the conclusion of all the little subplots going on in the meanwhile.
Log Horizon 2 made me tremble with excitement during its first episode but the conclusion to the event that was foreshadowed there wasn't as spectacular as I imagined it to be. For some reason I expected an event like that
! Shiro and Akatsuki dying
to be a bit more glamorous maybe? Add a bit more drama to it due to its rare occurrence? Well, it might just be me having too high standards though and things will work themselves out eventually. The Flavor Text bit for example looks like a potentially good arc.F/SN I dropped and will not pick up again. It took me around five episodes of F/Z to get that sour taste out of my mouth.
-
Huh, so you really think FSN is that bad?
Speaking of Psycho Pass, I'm more on the verge of dropping that one. Not a single character has gotten any character development, it really plays up the shock value, while keeping very little of the meaning. I hate Mika so much. It just feels so empty.
-
No love for Parasyte's latest episode? Have to say, it's been the top anime for me this season. Enjoying every minute of it. Nishiki's transformation has been very intriguing thus far, cannot wait to see where it leads. And I'm saying this as someone who hasn't read the manga, so my views might be different. Also, some of the music they play during the episodes is fantastic!
-
It sure makes me want to check it out. I'm a sucker for "battle for your humanity" series like Tokyo Ghoul and Attack On Titan. From what I gather it's something like that.
-
Gundam Build Fighters Try is a step down from the original. It just feels phoned in compared to it. The characters feel barebones, the writing's quite a bit weaker (that sick younger sibling trope last episode), the team dynamic hasn't lived up to it's potential and the battles aren't nearly as exciting. The most aggravating parts of the predecessor are here stronger than ever before (hey guys, did you feel like you were getting a tad tired by Build Knuckle spamming to victory near the end? Here's a an entire suit that does nothing but spam certain kill supermoves! Basically a Gunpla built around dozens of cosmetically different build knuckles! Yayyyyy), with it's own additions on top (all this lame ass shipping can go die in a fire).
GBF was all about execution, and here we have more of the same type of content but executed worse. It's not really terrible by any means, but eh.
-
So far, Unlimited Blade Works, Parasytes and Bahamut are at the top of my list.
Psycho Pass is my biggest disappoitment; you can tell that Urobochi is absent. Things are getting just plain silly. If it was meant to be campy from the start there wouldn't be a problem, but the first season had a very mature and serious setting. This is almost insulting to the audience that the show cultivated.
And seriously, what purpose is Mika suppposed to serve? -
My favorites from the season so far are undoubtedly FSN and Bahamut. Log Horizon is also pretty good. The more I think about it, the more I really don't feel like watching more Psycho Pass 2, I think I am gonna drop it or finish it later. SAO is still being SAO, but it's dedicating time on the good parts of it. The fight in the newest ep was really well done.
-
Am I seriously the only one here who is enjoying Amagi Brilliant Park way too much? Its just so charming and fun. Takes me back to watching Fumoffu way back when
-
You're not the only one. It's such a silly show lol
-
I thought this week's FSN was pretty great. Not just the action scenes, but also the character development with the servants. It's all in set-up mode, but it's setting up so many awesome things to happen.
Like how the Archer and Shirou clash, Saber and Assassin clash and the eventual reconfrontation with Caster. -

Well this is certainly something.

Kind of disappointed but not surprised this is the most popular one so far. -

Eyup, it certainly was something. Now I would like it with subtitles.
-
It was weird, but I like it.^^ So it was made by kill la kill, panty stocking etc. staff?^^
-
That short is pretty great. Visually arresting and with a clear message underneath (although one served with all the subtlety of a swinging jackhammer, but I actually appreciate the bluntness).
-
I do hope the last episode of the AgK anime is not in any way foreshadowing what is going to happen in the manga. I'm probably better off just accepting it, however.
-
double episode of parasyte this week
-
Double episode?? Niceee!!!
-
Really good episode of Bahamut this week once again. Some really well done action scenes and good character development, particularly in part of Kaisar and Favaro. Also, the scene after the ending is totally not ominous at all.
-
So did the two bad guys teleport before getting destroyed ? Gee, that's pretty convenient. Jeanne D'Arc is a beast. Maybe she will stay with the group.
I guess our two heroes were doing well too, as they only had human weapons.
Also Jeanne's first opponent is a lion demon. That's cool, I thought he was some kind of baboon.I wonder if there is a reason for this guy to be much stronger than he was in the earlier episodes.
-
In the earlier episodes Pazuzu was messing around with two lowly humans who kinda got a jump on him, this time his opponent was a hero with a magical WMD so he unleashed his actual demonic powers. Also I'm not too sure he teleported in time. Azazel did most definetely, but not so sure about Pazuzu.
-
I'm trying to watch the first Fate/Stay Night… The animation is so awful compared to Fate/Zero and UBW it's cringe-worthy lol
-
Oh my god those 2 episodes of parasyte were awesome. So many new developments. Love it to death
-
Parasyte has been very good. Really loving the way Shinichi has changed.

The animation was pretty bad and awkward at the beginning, but it gets better. There are some interesting moments of key animation later, in the 2nd half mainly.
-
Shippuden just released an episode and Parasyte is still on top on crunchyroll, that makes me feel happy for some reason :3
-
Soon shipuuden will finally die.^^

Dunno where to discuss this, but the last time Araki teamed up with Code Geass guy, Guilty Crown happened and from what I've seen of it and also heard of it, it is a mess.
Why not have a better damn writer. Araki is a great director.
-
Well, it's either going to be good/enjoyable or a complete trainwreck.
