I think we have our Jump Next! Spin-off series.
-
You mean the guy who soma already almost tied with, while facing him in his speciality, was tied up in the theme of "Italian Yamcha" of "I must win for THAT person", and it's the only oponent (other than Aldini) who soma has already faced?
I don't see it, It's Subaru and Ryo who are still up against soma, order yet to be decided.
It will happen.
And I'm not ripping on the manga because it's so by the book, i am just enjoying that fact that I can probably guess what is going to happen due to the overwhelming similar themes that happened in every shonen manga.

Megumi wasn't the main protagonist of a tournament though, so she'd have to have gotten the boot at some point.
That said I don't think that's a shonen manga plot archetype. That's kinda a general archetype for 99% of things out there because in general when you build up a protagonist and let the audience get to know him/her, the audience kinda wants to see them succeed, too.
-
Shonen law has already decided the outcome of this match. The dark skin guy will win, as he is the main antag of this arc.
Shonen law has spoken.
I only wonder if the Bitch-in-Chief will treat the lady bad for losing.
Fuck Shounen-law! I want at least ONE girl to make it into the top 4! And even better a showdown between the two aides! And I don't want this badass girl to lose just cause that OCD guys says so!

Megumi is protagonist of the serie. That's the point in regards to the plot archetype topic I'm talking about. As much as I like her, it was a nice surprise to me to see her losing.
Also, it's not an archetype in other kind of series, but very common in shounen. I wouldn't even know how to measure that 99% of all things.
-
After Megumi's "don't talk crap about my friends" speech, Shonnen law dictates that the power of friendship should of guaranteed her win. It didn't though, which is one of the things I like about this manga.

A common Shounen manga plot archetype is: the protagonists win. We saw Megumi lost.
Shonen Law states that the main female character, unless the central protagonist of the story, will never achieve victory in a fight/duel/battle that directly affects or changes the outcome of the Protagonist winning his battle.
While the Protagonists will win the overall battle in Shonen law, the secondary main character will never be directly responsible for this. Hence Megumi losing, but "winning" in the sense of personal achievement and growth, though still allowing Soma to achieve his victory over the Tan guy, as dictated by Shonen Law.

Megumi had friendship speech powerup. In any other Shonen manga that would of given her male main character status for a brief moment and she would of beat the bad guy, who also just had a "I was a prick as a kid and still haven't changed" flashback.

Yes, that was the main reason to wait for her victory. And I agree, the duels being not predictable is a big achievement of this series.

Found this picture funny, but it's really graphic.
!
As for the chapter, there's something in the translation that foreshadows the winner of the match.
! Subaru predicted that Hayama is going to win the match. No point in having that line unless Subaru is purposely going to be wrong.
! I really did think Hisako would win because like DarthAsthma says this means all of Block A is bound to win (unless the manga subverts yet another expectation and makes Subaru lose, but I think that'd just be poor storytelling), and like maxterdexter pointed out we already saw Hayama fight with his specialty dish, though I guess this and future matches will show off how Hayama's spices can make him a worthy opponent and not just a chef with a curry gimmick like Megumi with meat.
! But yeah, expected Megumi to win the last match and she lost, so I'm 1-2 in initial predictions so far. -

what disturbs me more is that "eel" is coming out of the bear's face on his apron.

Well, that "turtle head" has to show up somehow while he's teaching women's classes :ninja:

Shokugeki no Souma is a radical feminism manga?
-
Denied, not good enough to replace jojo's.

The series is very unshonen like. Megumi lost was basically a spit in the face to typical Shonen tropes. Megumi had the whole friendship speech against a person who doesn't care for friends and still lost. In addition to that, she also lost when she went second. Which is another Shonen trope where whoever goes second in 1v1 matches ends up winning.
One of the recent big ones was all the hype Alice was getting recently before this tournament started. You would think in typical Shonen setup, she would end up facing Soma in one of the semi-final/final matches in the tournament. Nope, she meets Soma in the very first match of the tournament where she ends up losing.

Chapter's out
http://www.batoto.net/read/_/250870/shokugeki-no-soma_ch74_by_casanova/2! assuming the match ends next chapter like the editor's note says, looks like this was a short match. There's not a lot of insight made into Hisako unfortunately (the turtle burger sounded and looked delicious though). And it's good we kinda got insight into Subaru before his match too, even though it seems to come at the expense of putting focus on the character building of the contestants in the match
! Personally also think the fantasy shot would've been cooler without the goofy face but it seems intentional, but whether it's to point out some inferiority with the dish or just to show her character as more of a serious comic relief is something I'm not sure of -

There not being much insight like you say could be a hint towards more to come in the next round. Which means she'd win against Hayama; something I personally would love to see. Hisako's cooking made me seriously visualize the burger in front of me and what it would roughly taste like. Her whole cooking theme in general is fascinating to me and something I want to see a lot more of.
Now there's this shounen law you guys have been talking about above, but you also managed to disprove its application in this manga. Hence there MIGHT be a chance that Hisako comes out on top. -
I'd rather Hishoko win, mainly because I absolutely hate kebabs.
-
Dat apron.
-
Random observation that is probably a false flag or something - but the cup of tea served to Takumi is a completely different style than the ones given to Soma and Megumi. Hopefully it's inconsequential because that would be a lame route to take things. ~.~

Given Subaru's personality and thing for needing to know even the most minute details, I kind of expect that it's him knowing which types of tea each of them prefer and giving them that. I don't think he'll be a cheater

That explanation sounds perfectly plausible to me. I dig it, it's much better than the alternative.
On another note, with the theme of destroying troupes - I'm kind of hoping Subaru loses. It'd be interesting to see an Akira vs Soma rematch, with Ryo being bumped up to main antagonist for the arc. Given the themes we've had in this tourney it wouldn't be unreasonable for something like pizza to be next… maybe a situation playing out like Takumi wins by a hair despite it being his speciality, demonstrating that Subaru is no chump and Takumi got lucky.
-
Eh don't really care much for Hisako. If she wins I feel like there would be an aide showdown with Ryou. Might be a little too obvious.
-
Shokugeki the manga where nothing happens I say. I'm going to pull an Onihei and say Takumi will lose!!! Jinx!
-
I could go for a burger right now. Though it's 4 am. :ninja:

Damn

Yeah… I've got nothing.

Chinese scans are out on mangabird
! i even started thinking this last week, but after this chapter, now more than ever I think Hayama is going to end up winning the tournament.
! So my predictions:
Subaru wins the final prelim round.
! Semis
Ryou vs Hayama
Subaru vs Soma
! Finals
Soma vs Hayama
! Giving Soma a competitor his age that's not just Erina that Soma has lost to makes sense to me story wise. -
! Well, that's one way to break a girl out of her shell :ninja:
-
! she seems shell shocked
-
I know Takumi is 99% likely to lose storywise but I'm still holding to that 1% chance he could win.
Hopefully that poster a while back was some kind of foreshadowing of the semifinals :!
-
! Awwwwwwwwwwww, poor Hisako. I would have liked for her to advance and have a 1 vs 1 against Ryou, a battle between the cousins aides so to say, but sadly it looks like girls suck at cooking in SnS. Not a single girl made it past the quarterfinals. :/
Here's to hope Erina is at least good enough a cook to hold herself against this man world who's after her seat. XD
! Hope that won't be the last time we saw Hisako, I liked her cool and brutal style in cooking.
! I hope Takumi doesn't lose but after I think him becoming angry is part of whateverhisnameis-new dude to ensure his victory in some way. Also I bet that their theme will be "PIzza", an italian food which will make Takumi overconfident believing in his sure victory just to have it snatched away.
Also I predict that Takumi will serve second but still lose similar to Megumi. -
! What a disappointing duel, give flashbacks!!!

! Giving Soma a competitor his age that's not just Erina that Soma has lost to makes sense to me story wise.! Semi-supporting that theory… I've seen someone mention that Hayama kind of has his woman that he wants to dedicate all his food to in Jun, or something like that. That + Jouichirou's motto from the start about becoming an outstanding cook, well make of that what you will.
! In the meantime I hope for a weird and totally unfitting win for Takumi that doesn't seem to fit the story at all to pull me out of the disappointment that was Hayama vs Hisako. Unless I'm missing something(since I can't read chinese) and we're getting some extension next week about both. -
Theory:
If the next theme is pizza, Takumi might use the water from the tomatoes trick his bro used in making his pizza bread maybe. Cheese filled crust is delicious too
….I want pizza now
! Hayama's dish almost looks like a calzone cut in half rather than an actual burger. Looks delicious though.

Late to the party but I hope Erina's aide wins just to have a girl in the final four. Aide versus aide battle would be interesting but I think Alice's aide has a comfortable cushion over Erina's in terms of hype. Once again, Subaru shows more likable quirks. I hope this guy is not putting on facade or shows how despicable he truly is later, I don't wanna hate him.

Yeah, that's my hope too with Hisako. I want Subaru to be more ruthless with his information he got about others to rail them up, that's a legitimate move after all. If you can't take the heat being a cook might be the wrong job for you. XD
Spoilers, do not read if you don't want to be spoilered!
! My hopes regarding an aide vs aide battle got crushed though. No fanservice for the halffinales for us, all girls got kicked out. :C
! At least Subaru is using his information about Takumi to make him really pissed by telling him that his younger brother suck at cooking and such.^^ -
Honestly, after what seems to happen in the latest chapter (Subaru insulting Isami and spitting on the mezzaluna) I really hope that Takumi is the one that defeats him.
Souma taking revenge for Takumi wouldn't work IMO. Takumi would lose credibility as a rival if he needs someone else to defeat someone who disrespected his family.
So I'm holding a small hope for a win and that this match serve as a development point for Takumi. Souma's conflict with Eizan can wait after the election arc is over. -
-

Lol, Gordon Ramsay and his ilk is the reason I don't want to be a cook.
I forgot to ask but was that an Ultraman Tiga or something reference when the principal ate Hisako's burger?
-
! People say the next theme is pasta, this is not verified but I've seen it mentioned on 2 different sites.
-
Minor random gripe:
So the director made a big deal about Alice losing because her dish was merely her skills set in a box instead of a progression on bento culture. Why hasn't this 'requirement' been brought up again for ramen and burgers?
! pasta eh? Takumi just made pasta for the preliminaries, so it might put him at a disadvantage if he has to rethink his entire dish to avoid doing the same thing twice. Then again pasta is pretty italian so maybe he'll have something interesting planned.
-
Has anyone tried Shawarma?

Yeah it's so delicious you'd stay silent the whole time eating.

! Because, well, they are actually expanding on different takes of different dishes. Both of the ramen dishes featured the general essences of ramen with a flair of port city cuisine, Erina's aide made a burger with turtle meat and customized it with a different take on a bun, and Hayama's still involved ground meat in the form of Kofte with the "bun" being, I presume, pita bread. Alice's technically fit under the definition of a "Bento" but it was definitely much more of a selected course of sushi than a lunch box.
