! Really hope Megumi becomes Soma's love interest rather than Erina since there relationship feels like it would be more genuine and less of a stereotypical manga one where Erina is a complete tsundere. Plus just geerally like Megumi more

Spoiler 61:
Source: http://www.漫画ネタバレ.biz/archives/4015770.html
There'll be a subset of people flipping their shit and squealing:! Soma and Megumi are teaching at a kid's cooking class.
The kids are getting a bit touchy with Megumi.
On their way back Megumi notices that she might have fallen for Soma.! oh oh, what a nice development there. I presonally like Megumi as a character and a love interest for Soma was in the air since the Training Camp.
! On the other hand, I really feel that the 1st round will be Soma Vs Megumi. -
Scooped up a few more things:
Source: http://ikura.2ch.net/test/read.cgi/wcomic/1393589926/ post nr. 438,441,446,447! The kid's cooking class consists of kindergarten children to second grade primary school kids.
They're using the polar star dorm vegetables for the classes.
Soma and Megumi are filling in on short notice for an absent teacher due injury.
Isshiki is teaching the class for women.
–--------
The oldest kid in the class, a girl named Kanon doesn't take kindly to Megumi
Kanon: I won't take lessons from some self-important country bumpkin.
Megumi: If you think about the person dear to you while you're cooking it'll definitely turn out delicious.
(Soma is listening)
Kid: Eeehh... you're lying!
Kid: Something like that doesn't change anything!
Megumi: But it's true...On the way back
Megumi: (Mmmh?)
Megumi: (Thinking about it that time, I...)
Soma: ...Tadokoro?
Megumi: (thump thump)
Soma: Something wrong? I'm going to leave you behind if...
Megumi: No it's nothing...
Megumi: (thump thump thump thump)Oh and there's one kid diving under Megumi's skirt.
(No idea about the order this is how it was posted)
-
! Oh boy…cue the shippers. It is expected for Megumi, what would be surprising is if those feelings are returned which I think won't happen, at least not any time soon. I just hope this doesn't have a negative impact on her performance in the next round. Like if she thinks about it too much.
-
! Shiiit. Time for Nikumi to channel her inner Nishino Tsukasa.

Chapter's out. It's a cute breather chapter. I also really want to see that Gundam vegetable in real life.

On another note, is there any info on the book that came out in February? -
Oh wow scanlation was faster than the raw. Yey more pages next week! Noooo, we gotta wait another week.
I've been surprised lately that I've been enjoying this series the most when reading it at a weekly pace.
The other one I make a point of keeping up weekly is One Piece but I don't know I feel lately I'm getting more out of that if I'd read it in small badges.
My appreciation currently is more anchored in the overall happenings for that rather than the characters themselves, whereas I'm fine just enjoying the characters doing stuff every week in Soma.I think part of that is that One Piece's characters are just generally more static given the structure of that series.
It's best character moments in recent memory are more anchored in the ensemble dynamic and how the crew bounces of each other rather than singular standouts(like the Zoro moment at the end of thriller bark). So with everyone being so split right now my engagement is solely focused around how the overall story progresses rather than what's happening to each of the characters. With Soma I feel like there's always a character moment each chapter. Either a change/them growing, a payoff to some built up or them being challenged.
It makes me always finish a chapter with "I wanted to see more of that character."And don't take this as Soma>One Piece, nothing of the sort they're way too different(I still like them both a lot) just some subjective introspection about the differences in how I appreciate them.

I swear, Yuuto, if Megumi and Souma aren't an item by the end of the arc or at least some time in the future…
Although I wonder how the heck Erina would fit into the plot then... still, Megumi and Souma are a way better fit development-wise as of right now.
Didn't know Souma had enough precision in his knifework to carve out a gundam model though lol

a tsundere is always a neccisity in a harem. Oh wait , isn't nikumi one too ? Oh well lets list thm out shall we:
1. School girl willing to try out anything Souma dishes out - "M" lady
2. Tsundere Erina
3. Boobs of meatiness Nikumi
4. Clutzy innocent Tadokoro -
If that last panel is not a "these two are a pair" declaration, I haven't read enough manga. Because, man, that is so clear. And so great. This is exactly how you do character and relationship development in a story like this.
-
I think Megumi's line that you should cook for the people you care about, is the essence of the story. It's pretty much the same advice Jouchiro gave to Some the day he left him behind: "to meet a woman that will make you want to give all the food you make to her". It's a lovely idea to use in writing a story… It's like the affection makes you better chef. ...
If you haven't watch it, you could give it a try to this fantastic mexican film which rounds around the same idea: Like Water for Chocolate. The novel, on which the film was based, is considered one of the best Spanish novels from XX Century.
And coming back to Erina, I had the same doubt than Purple Hermit. Just how is the author going to solve this knot… Until this chapter I was thinking in the end it was going to be a perfect harmonic relationship between, the best taster, Erina (the Godess's tonge in chapter 2) and the best chef, Soma. But this development of Megumi just...

Yeah and the fact that Souma had a bit of a reaction shot to it made me think that was the idea being alluded to.

Like Dryish said, the development is going super swell, and it would be super super painful to see it go to waste just to fulfill first chapter promises, let alone that if ErinaxSoma ends up being pretty poor in development or the actual thing compared to MegumixSoma
-
At this point I honestly don't think ErinaxSoma is going to become a thing anymore, as in, their rivalry and eventual inevitable companionship will not become a full-blown relationship. They're likely to become very good friends and allies, maybe even companions in the cooking world, but right now I can't see how they could develop a romance. Especially when Erina is unbeknownst to herself crushing on the ghost of Soma's dad's past.
It's really hard to say, admittedly, because as good and lovely as Megumi is and as far as this development has now been taken with this chapter (don't miss that it's not only Megumi who realizes she's drawn to Soma but also Soma himself who notices and is shown paying attention to Megumi's motherliness), she is still not walking by Soma's side but slightly behind him. In Japanese society that is probably the way it should go for all intents and purposes, but in romantic relationships that's not necessarily very good. We don't know enough about Soma and his ruminations yet, but it might be possible that, as lovely as Megumi is and as much as he cares for her, he's not romantically interested because she just isn't… adventurous and individualistically strong enough to spark an interest in Soma himself.
But then again, it might be that Soma who himself has the adventurer's spirit just like his dad needs someone who has her feet steady on the ground and who can be there taking care of everything while Soma goes off on his own adventures. It's a funny thing to speculate about, but we have nowhere close to enough knowledge on anything to make even somewhat accurate guesses.
... And the manga might never even go that deep into things for all that we know. I'd absolutely love it to, but there is a possibility that it just stays as something Tootsuki-centered and will never venture further out.
-
Well if the author feels the need to actually pair off characters there's at least not a lopsided amount of boys to girls. There's plenty of dudes to throw at Erina. Maybe that's why I like this series. It feels less harem like cause it's not just one competent guy and a swarm of girls or the reverse.
-
I really love how they handled the realization. It's obvious without having to have been explicitly explained and is a great example of showing rather than telling

Even so, it could become harem, which it would be a waste.
-
The thing that keeps me very optimistic is that the stuff Soma's dad said about finding a girl pretty much means Soma will have to choose and focus on one, and it'll probably have to be a natural development
-
I think the harem aspect can be played as a joke as long as it doesn't degrade into actual cat-fighting between the girls. Soma is charismatic and always helps out others so it's hardly surprising that some of the girls he interacts with more closely than just by chatting it up with them fall for him. It's just that they have to acknowledge the reality of the situation instead of turning this into another Nisekoi (that I still enjoy in its own context because it's supposed to be silly like that).
Nikumi spying on Megumi and Soma was handled pretty well, because as envious as she seemed about the whole situation between the two, she still realized the gravity of it all. It wasn't played for easy laughs by having her jump in there to declare her undying love to Soma or anything as silly as that.
-
I think my last post was worded awkwardly, so I wanted to clarify: By more natural, I meant it suggests Soma would have to be totally devoted to one girl, which suggests that he wouldn't have to go through a phase of having to choose between two
-

good point, … where is that sesame stree's gif Zachri uses to express just "Wow!!!"
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Tho the election of a girlfriend, doesn't forcefully cancel the harem development..
-
Well yeah, other girls can still fall for him, but I don't really care about that as long as Soma focuses on just one in terms of a romantic relationship and doesn't go around being super unsure of who to date or anything like that. Like Dryish said, Soma's personality is such that I could understand him attracting the girls who he interacts with on a close basis, but as long as it doesn't devolve into the annoying harem tropes who really cares?
-
Oh wow as much as I like Megumi I don't feel like that's a done deal. We know so little about so many of the other characters. Also we're only 60 chapters in.
I feel like declaring them as a couple now as nice as the build up has been is jumping the shark a bit. I also don't feel like Soma harbors any of those feelings right now. Taking that listening scene as evidence right now feels bit like thisAlso I'd normally say that shonen jump mangas tend to drag their romance out into infinity always throwing in some bait and doing miniscule progress even if their focused on the romance to begin with, but on the other hand Soma kind of bucks a few of the tropes and so far has treated the subject with respect to their readers.
I'm not going to commit to any ship cause I don't really care that much in the end as long as it's handled well and I definitely think there still a lot of room left to handle stuff around the romance in a lot of different and interesting ways. Like Erina isn't even much of a character at this point with how little we were shown.
-
Jumping the shark is a term used to talk about the moment a show begins to continuously degrade in quality fyi
Yeah normal Jump stuff has romance that gets there in ages. Also harem in itself is a genre of some sort so that kinda perpetuates that. But hey Soma's not a bland not unlikeable but really no redeeming features protagonist so he's got that going for him.
Like to me the only real competition for Megumi is Erina just based on plot progression and hints, that is of course unless some more characters get introduced into the picture. Nikumi obviously likes Soma a lot, but their character dynamics are never really played to that sort of thing and it tends more to be inserted as regular humor. Erina on the other hand from chapter 1 (also the one shot) is hinted at being Soma's main love interest, is kinda intrigued by Soma but keeps her distance from his sorta really low background, and has that thing about Soma's dad.
Of course it's too early right now to declare Megumi and Soma a couple, but it would be super nice to come out of this election arc with something. Maybe at least getting closer-er. Like I guess I don't necessarily need them getting into a relationship so quickly, but there needs to be a continuation of that momentum and chemistry. Even if there is a rival that shows up, that sorta character dynamic should still get molded and developed between megumi and soma.
Yeah I'd really rather not have this turn into a harem series considering the super great characterization and growth, and hey, so far it's beaten a lot of the normal expectations you would have expected from its first few chapters, so let's see how it goes.
-

Oh damn thanks for pointing it out! I'm actually not sure if I got it confused with a similar idiom or I got hit by multilingual confusion again. I basically wanted to say that it's a bit premature to make certain judgements here.
-
Actually, jumping the shark is more specific to when the series starts relying on gimmicks to grab attention; like Fonzie jumping over that shark.
The way I see it, Soma's dad told him to find the girl he'll want to make food for. Soma, though, is going to be the best chef and he's always full of ideas, so he'll need more than one. At the climax of the series, Soma will cook for the prime minister of Japan and cause him to foodgasm so hard that polygamy gets passed into law.
-
Funny how many of us were expecting Souma and Megumi to help out in some restaurant and get some 'real world' experience when in reality they used the day to teach a few kids how to make Gyoza. I liked it. The interactions with all the kids were both cute and fun to read. And seeing Megumi and Souma work so splendidly together only added to an already good chapter.
Erina's an alright character and I'm sure we'll learn to like her even more in the future, but Megumi is simply way too awesome. Even Nikumi can't compare to that lovely young lady with the beautiful smile.

This might well happen, but it won't be the climax. I think this manga gets taken to Gurren Lagaan levels. Souma goes to space and cooks with alien ingredients so delicious that a portal gets ripped into Toriko's Gorment World. Arc 2 begins

Good chapter.
I still think Erina will be the girl hinted by his dad. Even if right now it feels right for Megumi to be that girl, I'm sure that after some development of Erina's character, choosing Erina will feel right as well.
But well, we're still in their first year. There's time for plenty of developments.
As long as ShinomiyaXHinako and HayamaXJun happen I'll be happy.About the harem discussion, I just hope that Souma doesn't get all the girls.
With so many cool guys introduced, it would be a shame if every girls are only interested with Souma.
For example, I'd rather see Alice with Kurokiba than the Xth girl to have a crush on Souma. -
I'm sure that after some development of Erina's character, choosing Erina will feel right as well.
BURN THE WITCH!!! Maybe we need Erina developed, but your point of "Your dad thinks that you should end up with this crazy girl who has a crush on him" isn't good. Soma's dad talked about an hypotetical girl, and was most likely thinking of Soma's Mom, not in an Edipal way, but in how she made him cook better.
-
Megumi doesn't make Souma cook better though. She's basically his Shiomi. Someone to taste all his surprise squid meals.
-

Well not yet anyway. Soma's definitely not aware or doesn't have those feelings yet.
But I'll be damned if their chemistry isn't great together.
-
Yeah, they have great chemistry. I would prefer if he ended up for her. But he'll end up with Erina.
-
Megumi doesn't make Souma cook better though. She's basically his Shiomi. Someone to taste all his surprise squid meals.
Isn't that wrong? Shiomi does make Hayama a better cook. It's her chemical theory on spices paired with his own ability to apply that theory that makes him the cook he is.
–--------------------------------------
Oh wait you probably mean that in relation to his dad. -
Since we're talking about pairings, it would be in relation to how how his dad treated her. He was her guinea pig. The author even had a panel of Megumi going "…." when Shiomi brought that up.
-
There was also that girl Soma was familiar with in middle school that showed up in the Karaage chapters, who definitely had a thing for Soma. She was also used as a guinea pig for the peanut butter squid stuff.
In all likelihood honestly Erina is likely to be paired with Soma of course. But I can still dream…!

I'm a bit reluctant to post this but I figured since they were legit last week it might be ok and they don't sound fake:
Source: http://ikura.2ch.net/test/read.cgi/wcomic/1394613521/-100 (green posts)! #62 Meeting of the strong
The autumn election's main tournament opens.
The topic for each round will change.
All participants have been notified about their topic the day before.
The first match is Soma vs Alice, the topic is "bentou"(just in case, Japanese box lunch).
The time limit is 2 hours.
Nakiri Senzaiemon is occupying one of the judge seats.
Alice [Hah?… Looking pale today.
Soma[Don't worry I'll be looking just fine after beating you today.]
–------------------------------------
Alice's flashback:
7 years ago Alice won an international contest of high prestige in northern Europe.
After that she continued sweeping all prizes away.
When she was 10 she acquired 45 different (patents).<- not sure on this one
She also got research contracts with 20 different shops.
The godsend luminary of molecular gastronomy.
Small accident while editing hope no one got hit by spoilers unwillingly. -
! Wow I just keep being wrong when trying to make predictions in this manga (well all manga tbh). Was expecting Alice/Megumi given the contrast remarks during prelims, and definitely wasn't expecting Soma to face Alice first round.
! That said, I wonder why Soma's pale. He's not really the type to get nervous. -
Don't know how I feel about that matchup in particular, seems too early to me.

raw http://www.mangabird.com/shokugeki-no-soma-62?page=0 guess spoilers are confirmed. Barechan seems to be extremely late or they skipped this week on Soma.
Anyways what a chapter.! Ok this at least has to end in a draw right? I'd be stumped if he loses again here. But I just don't know anymore.
