Seems like a very rigid view on self-identification.
Not that i have any say on it, i'm not passing for anything but pale lol

The significant differences are all cultural, not biological.
I don't think you need to change your race to respectfully participate with another culture if you weren't born into it. I add the respectfully due to people Columbusizing and appropriations that tend to happen. There's only a few matters I can think of where race can sometimes mean you're more likely yo pass on some genetic isues to your children.

If people shouldn't be in a place where they feel they have to be accepted, why should people coming together to celebrate their race be considered socially permissible?
I don't get your point here at all.
Logic would dictate that if people are more comfortable celebrating differences then there would be less instances of people feeling unaccepted because of not matching a specific standard, no?
Feel free to clarify, I'm not entirely sure I get where you're going with this.

I don't really understand why race should be considered important at all.
There are indicators that racism has improved, remained unchanged, and gotten worse since the 1960s. To pick and choose your data only to agree with your (admittedly skewed) perspective is how many people would even argue that racism doesn't exist anymore. Sadly, if you do this, you're dead wrong and actually part of the reason that racism still exists and has arguably gotten worse.
Racism exists period.
Are there still actual Laws that specifically discriminate against blacks?

Are there still actual Laws that specifically discriminate against blacks?
Yes. A simple example: voting restrictions in the US.

Are there still actual Laws that specifically discriminate against blacks?
Yes, actually. This law was a big step towards improving things, but there's still still a serious disparity between the way possession of crack (a drug used primarily by black people) and cocaine (a drug used primarily by white people) is punished.
There is actually a condition called "Vitiligo" I have friends moms and see people in public with this. It's really wierd but basically you turn white.
This is a black woman that had this condition and turned white;

It's worth mentioning that Vitaligo leaves patches of pigmented skin, so the remaining skin has to be bleached white. Michael Jackson had it.
I don't really understand why race should be considered important at all.
I agree with that, but given that your point still makes no sense. So you're saying celebrating diversity is bad because races shouldn't matter at all…
BUT, even if all that doesn't matter, the reality is that celebration of diversity is grounded on shared ethnic and cultural experiences. These are not about highlighting differences and segmenting the population, but about celebrating shared ancestries, which altogether for the most part enrich the human experience.

So basically, Crack cocaine is penalised more than powdered cocaine and the blacks use the one that is more punishable. So an indirectly racist law which was improved.
Another example of racist (and classist) laws in the US: Public school funding from local property taxes.

Yea, I heard about MJ having that, but then again, it isn't really attractive so bleaching would be ok.
People I know with it are, Filipino friends, a bit common with asians and a lot of Indians seem to have it. Some blacks, but I've only seen like 2 in Sydney.
I agree with that, but given that your point still makes no sense. So you're saying celebrating diversity is bad because races shouldn't matter at all…
No, I'm questioning our societal celebration of race. Every race has a million subcultures, and barring dangerous/illegal activity they should all be celebrated in some form.

Celebration of diversity was originally based on shared ethnic experiences, yes. As time went on and human culture grew exponentially, that anchor of ethnicity became less and less important. What ethnicity do anime fans need to be tied down to?

It's not directly racist by looking at that article, it just seems to be classist if anything.

An intentionally racist law that was recently improved, yes.

Wrong again, friend. You should do a little more homework.

So where does wanting to have a choice in your race fall in terms of this? Because that sort of concept you mentioned seemed very intent on preserving the idea of race.

No idea what that last line is supposed to mean.
Also no idea why you talk in the past sense given that diverse ethnic backgrounds are still very much a thing that exists.
Wrong again, friend. You should do a little more homework.
How am I wrong? I specifically said "from that article"
@SuburbanErrorist:

The words race, racist and black didn't come up in it once.
The only way you could think that the article didn't point out a racist problem with public school funding is if you also somehow thought that there was no disparity in wealth and income based on race in the US. Weren't we literally just talking about systemic racism last night?
Wrong again, friend. You should do a little more homework.
Although the black "parents" factor, really is black "parent" instead. I hear that blacks had more 2 parent families in the 60's than they do now.

I'm suggesting that we not judge and shame the people who have already made the decision to do so. There's no reason we can't become a more tolerant society and work to end racism at the same time.
It was mostly a "hey maybe we could be a more tolerant society by tolerating these people everyone seems to hate" thing.
No idea what that last line is supposed to mean.
Also no idea why you talk in the past sense given that diverse ethnic backgrounds are still very much a thing that exists.
Most subcultures in America are no longer exclusive to people of a single ethnic background.
Alright, so it has been decided that this thread sucks and is a black hole of negativity here in the GD forum, so it's done now.
Don't carry on your discussions in other threads, and please stay on topic.
