Doctor Who reimagined with American actors.
I might have applauded at a few of these choices.
Dick Van Dyke as the second doctor? Yes please. Gene Wilder as Tom Baker? Yeah, that makes some sense.

It's too perfect. Lost it at Kyle MacLachlan.
<3 Sam Rockwell BTW
They lost me at Nicholas Cage.
They lost me at Nicholas Cage.
They could have done that episode with the Vespiform and had his Doctor killed by giant bees.
Finished The Enemy of the World. Very interesting story, though sadly there is only one scene at the very end where the Doctor and Salamander are on screen at the same time, and you can only see their faces in a very short part of that scene. Given budget issues though, they pulled it off quite well, just wished there was more of it.
The story didn't go the way I expected it to go and the people underground barely got any screentime for me to care about them. Still, a good story. Also I did kinda chuckle at the proof that Salamander is evil because a guy busts a bunch of tea cups.

Just started watching the last season with Tom Baker, oh my goosh WELCOME TO THE 80s!
Just started watching the last season with Tom Baker, oh my goosh WELCOME TO THE 80s!
Oh yeah. Tom Baker's last season. That was….....something.
I was anticipating the theme change, but didn't expect the incidental music change and everything becoming kind of florescent and shiny. And Star Wars-like scene wipes.
I wasn't a big fan of Doctor Who when John Nathan Turner took over as the show runner. He was trying to give it a more serious feel to it, which is fine, but something about how it turned out didn't sit right with me. There were still a handful of good serials with the last 3 Doctors of the classic series, but I remember having to force myself to finish a lot of the Peter Davison ones. I had the misfortune of choosing Warriors of the Deep as my first serial during his run. I'm glad I didn't stop there since the next one I watched was Four to Doomsday which gave me a much stronger impression.
Well, that's why I'd say it's better to just watch the series in order. I made that mistake earlier, and I don't think you really get a good perception of each doctor if you just pick out a serial randomly.
The rest of the episodes seem fine so far, but I really disliked The Leisure Hive. Must be the combination of a confusing script, weird camera angles and over the top cheesy music that was so high in the mix that sometimes I couldn't even hear the dialogue. I guess we hadn't learned yet at the time that by using the current new music style trends as your soundtrack, you risk making it sound incredibly dated 30 years later. Not that it was a new thing to do in the show, a lot of the Pertwee era stuff sounds very 70s Moogy, but there was a little more charm in that.
PS -

@Print:
Why do I not remember that at all, lol. Must have tried to block it out.
A little one-time song really isn't so much of a problem as the whole music soundtrack, though. I do cringe whenever I hear that same Christmas song they kept using in every special.
I do cringe whenever I hear that same Christmas song they kept using in every special.
The sad thing is that that song genuinely is everywhere at Christmas in the UK and has been since the 70s. It's no exaggeration.

Is it? Interesting to know, it's certainly not known in the US, I assumed it was just some song written for Doctor Who so they wouldn't have to pay someone royalties. :P It could be so much worse, though.

There was a study done at some point that showed that US Christmas music is mostly stuck in the 30s-50s and UK Christmas music in the 70s-80s.
But yeah, you'd be hard pressed to find a Brit who wasn't used to Noddy Holder screaming 'IT'S CHRISTMAS' every December from every radio set around.
I'd say it's more 40s-60's in the US. But there is also a handful of 80s-90's songs that get played to death. Most notably Band Aid's "Do they Know It's Christmas", Wham's "Last Christmas", "Grandma Got Run over By a Reindeer" by whoever did that, the gawdawful "Christmas Shoes" song, John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War is Over) "My Grown-up Christmas List", Wonderful Christmastime" by Paul McCartney, "All I want for Christmas is You" by Mariah Carey….that's all I can think of.
Well, that was a tangent.
I watched Ghost Light yesterday. Then I read the wikipedia and TV tropes detailing the story. My brain still hurts.
@Mr.:

Yeah, that one's kinda incomprehensible, the way it sorta doesn't bother to explain who anyone is or what their purpose or relationship with anyone is.

Was this the song used in most Christmas specials? I haven't seen them in a long while (minus the 2011 one, I always make a point to watch that one every year), and I don't recall what song they use.

I can almost accept everything that happened here in an I'mma gonna be stupid because fuck me that's why way, everything from the townspeople being kept inside cabinets like a morgue and being perfectly fine with it to an angel trying to end all life with primordial soup –-- but I still would not understand why the butler was a neanderthal.

Because.
He was the Survey unit, the same way Control was the Control unit. And yes, I had to read the DW wiki to find this out, after just having watched all three episodes.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, most of the stories from McCoy's era were way too convoluted for their own good. Ghost Light is the hallmark example of that.

Ghost Light would be fine if it got an extra episode, so that stuff could actually get explained.
Curse of Fenric is also kinda really hard to figure out, but they at least they kinda explained stuff.

That is a shame because from what few stories I've seen of him, The Seventh is the Doctor I really, really wish to say is my favorite.
To be fair, the stories may be convoluted, but they're by no means unwatchable (at least the last two seasons, anyway). For the most part, you understand all that you really need to understand, and the other elements, including McCoy's top notch performance, save them.
And Greatest Show in the Galaxy remains one of my all time favorite Doctor Who stories.
Finished The Web of Fear. A nice story, but I actually preffered the original Yeti story due to the more interesting location. Call me crazy but I'm not that wild about a story set completely in the subway. Still nice to see the Brig and even better that three of the four recovered episodes of the five missing actually featured him, it's nice to actually have most of his scenes in his debut story, though part 3 still being missing is a bit of an annoyance.
Also Season 5 is really going overboard with Six parters. I've just seen four in a row and I see that Fury from the Deep, the next story in line, is also a six parter.

Also just found out about "Doctor Who Meets Scratchman".
Why was this not made ? Also we have a chance to have Vincent Price on DW and we missed it....agh !
So I want to get into Doctor Who, but I have no idea where to start. Season 1 episode 1? or perhaps something more recent? Then I hear that you just have to find a Doctor you like, but I don't know where to begin.
Basically what's the most noob-friendly part of Doctor Who to start on?

I'd say start with New Who first. It's definitely more viewer-friendly that the Classic Who episodes which, while still enjoyable in their own right for the most part, haven't aged particularly gracefully and often suffer from slow pacing.
As for New Who, your mileage may vary on which Doctors you prefer (IMO, there hasn't been a bad Doctor to date), but the beginnings of Eccleston's and Smith's runs are both good places to start.

As Nobodyman said, I would recommend watching New Who first. Perhaps watch the first episode of Ecclestons run and The first of Smiths, see which you prefer and go from there. Also i probably wouldn't recommend starting on Tenants run without watching Ecclestons first as it carries on fairly closely story wise, where as Smiths run is somewhat of a fresh start.
But if you are interested in checking out classic who my recommendation would be to check out Tom Bakers era.
Yeah, start with new Who. I would say start with Eccleston and stick with it on from there. I thought Eccleston was great personally, and skipping Tennant would be a crime. I know some people don't care for the first season, but then some people love it and don't like the Moffat era (when Matt Smith starts). If you find that you aren't liking the first season or Eccleston, then maybe we can figure out which episodes are important plot-wise, because I do think the series gets better on the whole for a lot of reasons. The effects were definitely pretty cheesy in the first couple of seasons for what you might expect for a newer series.
I love the Tom Baker era too…most people do. The man was made of charm and charisma. But everyone is different and may have completely different favorite eras/doctors.
Hmm I dunno, personally I would recommend starting out with Jon Perwtee's era once you decide to go into the classic series, and go from there.
I actually didn't appreciate Pertwee at first, probably because he's plays the part so much more straight and serious, but I came back around later got into groove of it. Or maybe I just didn't really like Spearhead From Space all that much, it starts off kind of slow.
I guess the thing you have to keep in mind is that The Doctor is always changing, so don't get too attached to one of them or think you know how the Doctor should act all the time. <.< Embrace change.

Go with Matt Smith in the Eleventh Hour.
It's one of the better introductions to the Doctor out there IMO - A lot of decent explaining of what to expect and the budget for that series is a lot higher than Eccleston's and Tennant's. Also it is far more satisfying watching Smith before Tennant because it makes you appreciate River Song a lot lot more.
I'd still say try and start with Eccleston. If after a few episodes it's just not working for you, then skip to something else, but at least try and give it a shot in the correct order. That's how I watched it, so I don't know what it feels like to watch it in reverse. Maybe it works better than I think. I would think it would make it harder to go from the slick production values of the recent episodes to the older ones. But then again, I had no issues going back 50 years. I'm ok with cardboard robots with dryer vent pipe arms and stuff.

Now I don't usually do this but I feel like I have to do a bit of an overall review of Season 5.
One problem that one notices immediately is that, after the first story, all the stories are six parters. The constant length of each and every story feels a bit weird after the first four seasons, where 4 parters were usually the norm and the 6 parters the exception, and that usually only reserved for Dalek stories.
Four parts is the ideal length for a typical DW story. I'm not saying the six parters are bad, just that one can maybe feel the season dragging on a bit. Season 4, which though it had three more episodes had two full stories more then season 5, it does seem like they were trying to pad the season out a bit. The best story of the season is The Tomb of the Cybermen, and this despite the fact that, while I like Cybermen/Dalek stories, I actually preffer to see the writers come up with something different and unexpected. The story has good atmosphere and good pacing, at only 4 episodes. Most original would probably go to Fury from the Deep, who'se few surviving clips set the mood tremendously.
Worst is a bit of a problem. It's usually hard for me to pick a "worst" in DW anything after witnessing the unholy trinity of Time and the Rani, Delta and the Bannermen and Paradise Towers, hell I actually enjoyed The Underwater Menace, so for Season 4 I would have probably picked The Highlanders as "worst" despite my enjoyment of it, simply because it is the least exciting.
Now season 5 has no "notorious" episodes like Menace, so it's a bit harder to chose. I would probably say The Ice Warriors, mostly because it seemed to drag a bit, Storr is too pointless and stupid to live, and the people in charge as utterly incapable of deciding anything, whining constantly. Also the Warriors' voices kind of got on my nerves a bit. Not saying it's a bad story, but in retrospect it seems to drag more then any other Season 5 story.
I agree that 4 parters are ideal for a standard. Pertwee's first season even has 7 part series. O.O
Have you seen The Dominators and The Krotons yet? I thought those episodes were kind of funny-bad.
ps - rumors about Charles Dance being cast as The Master circulating around, but I'd assume fake until something official comes up and stays up.

Started watching the Dominators today, thanks for spoiling that XD

Most have pretty much covered it: start with the newer stuff that stars Christopher Eccleston.
Just… be aware that the first season with Eccleston has its odd moments (a garbage bin eating someone, farting aliens, etc.), but stick with it! There's definitely redeeming factors.
While that's a good start, you could also start on Season 5 with Matt Smith and not really miss much in terms of overall plot. Series 5 is pretty self contained for the most part and a few plot threads leak into later seasons.
The only downside with starting season 5 is that going back to previous seasons in the newer stuff can be tough. There's a notable difference in pretty much everything, like production value, cinematography, etc.
New reoccurring character: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/doctorwho/articles/Rising-Star-Joins-Doctor-Who-for-Peter-Capaldis-First-Series
! > Samuel Anderson (The History Boys, Gavin & Stacey, Emmerdale) is set to join the cast of Doctor Who as a recurring character in series 8, which will also introduce Peter Capaldi as the Doctor to millions of viewers for the first time. Anderson will play Danny Pink, a teacher at Coal Hill School where companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) also teaches.
On joining the show Samuel Anderson said: ‘I was so excited to join Doctor Who I wanted to jump and click my heels, but I was scared I might not come down before filming started! It’s a quintessential part of British culture and I can’t believe I’m part of it. It’s an honour to be able to work alongside Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman and I can’t wait to show people how my character becomes involved with such a fantastic duo!’
Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, added: ‘For the fourth time in Doctor Who history, Coal Hill School is coming to the aid of the TARDIS. In 1963 teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright accompanied the First Doctor. These days it’s the turn of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. And very soon now, Sam Anderson as Danny Pink will be entering the world of the Doctor. But how and why? Answers are coming later this year in Peter Capaldi’s first series of Doctor Who!’Filming recently began on episode 4 of the new series which will co-star Robert Goodman (Gangs of New York, Game of Thrones) and episode 5, co-starring Jonathan Bailey (Broadchurch, Groove High), and Pippa Bennett-Warner (The Smoke, Death in Paradise).
! Hopefully they'll do something new and interesting with this guy and not have him be the next Mickey.

! I see lots of people calling him "the new Mickey", and I have to wonder why. Is it seriously just because he's black? He seems like a radically different character from Mickey, just the fact that he's a teacher is more interesting.

! I knew someone would say that, but it's really just that he's a younger guy that is may end up being a love interest for Clara, and the only reoccurring young males that have been in the recent series are Mickey and Captain Jack Harkness, and I don't really see him being anything like Jack. I didn't say he IS the new Mickey, I really doubt he'll be that kind of character, I just said I hope they don't make him that and do something completely new and unexpected. Could be worse, last thing we'd want to hear is "I hope that's not the new Adric".

! Oh, I'm not attacking you or anything, I just saw lots of people on the Facebook post the Doctor Who site made say like "Mickey, is that you?", and comments like that just didn't make sense to me when we have no idea what kind of character he will be. I personally think he'll be different from Mickey, but who knows. Maybe they feel like they need a new companion love interest now that we have an older Doctor, which is weird but whatever. Hopefully Moffat isn't that stupid. Speaking of Adric, I would be fine with having another kid in the Tardis. That way it would sort of mirror the very first Tardis team.
! It's not really weird, it was fairly typical in the old days that they had a younger male character to be the action guy when the Doctor was older. However, I don't see them making Capaldi non-action oriented despite his age. I'm anticipation a bit more Pertwee. Maybe not.
I'd say start with Eccleston, but then again I'm biased since The Ninth is my favourite Doctor.
When I showed my girlfriend DW for the first time, I started her off with The Eleventh Hour, but only because I knew she'd most likely enjoy Matt Smith more…and you only get one chance this lol.
Eccleston's run can be off-putting because like someone mentioned earlier, there's some pretty zany parts that would immediately set alarm bells ringing for viewers that don't normally watch a show like DW.
However, if you stick with it, Eccleston has some of the best acting moments in the entirety of the franchise.

Yeah, and my gut is telling me Capaldi will be more similar to Eccleston than Smith/Tennant. I mean he will be more of the thinker, serious type. Not the class clown. He's going to divide the fanbase again just like when Smith took over.
