Before that, when Aokiji tried to attack Robin, Luffy Zoro and Sanji attacked Aokiji with reflex without thinking. People wouldn't even want to be close to an Admiral needlessly attacking 'em.

i kinda like the theory that they have been staying alive thanks to the powers of aging/time fruit. perhaps the 5 elder stars were the 5 strongest fighters back when the world government formed and destroyed the ancient kingdom. each generation they find whoever has the aging/time fruit and force them to keep them alive for that generation. these guys look like they have been in battles but i doubt they were admirals as i don't think the nobles would like non nobles directing world affairs.
Lately I'm really starting to think Bonney is the 7th Shichibukai.
