Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)

This was way more often and for longer stretches. It happened at least five times in one episode for at least a few minutes each. Not only that, but the aspect ratio was the original 4:3, so it felt even more abrasive. And it broke up a series of plot twists, which don't happen simultaneously very often. Point: It was worse than usual this time. Worse than usual when compared with previous dub episodes, not compared with the current sub.

I suppose I do owe it to all the glimpses other members have provided to do this. Haha. Alright; I put the disc in to see what it was, but only watched a minute of it. It's actually 22 minutes! Much longer than the interviews! You basically get to see the whole process of recording an episode. There's a camera where she's recording and it often cuts away to Colleen or Mike describing the recording process and their perspectives on how to best do it. Great inside look, from what I can see. We get to see her actually recording some of the lines. She moves a bit to get Luffy's energy out; reading the title card is about as far as I got.

Wow, that sounds really awesome! I can't wait to sit down and watch this, I really love seeing that type of behind-the-scenes. Thank you for checking that out for us!!

Helmeppo's definitely still Mike McFarland, no Troy Baker re- recast. Checked the credits for Coby…oh, It's Micah Solusod from Soul Eater! Hope he still has a chance to be Law because I feel that guy would be awesome for the role.

Man… the impel down and marineford arcs are going to be quite the challenge for mike in getting back actors, he himself doing buggy for a good almost 100 episodes.

Leah was great as Coby Version 1 but I'm personally glad they got Micah to voice this badass version of Coby.

I was also thinking about Micah as Law, if it doesn't pan out I hope they bring in JYB.

Whitebeard and Shanks was great, gets you really excited for whats to come in future seasons. Makino sounds a bit weird for some reason…First mention of Dadan by Woop Slap was nice, forgot that happens at this point.

I don't think not being a Texas resident is much of an issue. If Patrick & Chris Smith(who both live in LA) can come down to voice Franky and Spandam, I don't think it'd be to much trouble for JYB considering he's been in shows like Sengoku Basara, Trigun: Badlands Rumble and most recently Eureka 7:AO. I also don't believe T. Law has much screen time between Sabaody and Marineford. But I do think It would be harder though once we get to PH, I won't stop praying though .

Glad to hear that Whitebeard and Shanks are still boss :swanson:

I really don't like Whitebeard's dub voice that much. At all. Maybe it'll grow on me by the time Marineford rolls around…

I'm not sure this will be as big a concern as it might seem….for the various season five long-time-no-see appearances, there doesn't seem to have been much difficulty.

Speaking of Soul Eater, after seeing that for the first time recently, I could actually see John Swasey (no, that's not a typo) as Hogback or even Moria after hearing his Lord Death voice. I remember seeing his name in the credits and thinking that's got to be a mistake.

I guess that's to be a bit expected though, given how long it's been since having last recorded for Makino…..I thought she sounded off in the Boss Luffy episodes, too, from what I remember from season 1. (The winner of most different, though, goes to Kyle Herbert as Cobra....I thought it had to be someone different at first). I have to admit, though, I kind of wonder if they do anything to get these actors prepped for the role after such an absence. I remember them talking about getting the main cast to watch 205 before they started recording again for season four, but what about in instances like Makino, or Garp, etc?

I'm surprised they recast Coby. We were all rather convinced Leah Clark would be returning when FUNi posted a photo of her recording for One Piece a ways back. I don't remember if she had any bit roles during Water 7 or Enies Lobby. Unless we believe they're already partly into recording Thriller Bark, despite it not being announced yet….

I'm thinking the opposite, if they cast JYB then it would have to be for either a big role or for a movie role (look at Sean Schemmel and Scott McNeill for SW). JYB would not spend the money to fly out for a bit 2 episode part. For a movie or a main/non-recurring role in a big arc then maybe.

When Patrick and Chris fly out, they fly out for maybe 2-3 weeks and just go to work, they do huge chunks of shows like One Piece and also fit in any other series they were hired to do, then they fly home until there is enough work to fly out the next time.

Speaking of Soul Eater, after seeing that for the first time recently, I could actually see John Swasey (no, that's not a typo) as Hogback or even Moria after hearing his Lord Death voice. I remember seeing his name in the credits and thinking that's got to be a mistake.

Swasey could work as Hogback, I can see it. I can kinda see Moria, but I don't think McFarland will cast Swasey as Moria because he is also Crocodile.

Woah…Micah Solusod as older Coby, well I can't say that I saw that one coming.

I've only ever heard Micah's performance as Soul, so I can only imagine Soul's voice coming out of Coby and it just doesn't seem to be a good match imo.

Does he do anything to sound different from his role in Soul Eater? And how does Marco sound?

I haven't seen too much of Soul Eater beyond Episode 1, but while I thought the recast was kinda weird at first I think Micah makes a nice Coby. He doesn't make it sound as cool as Soul but it's not some completely awkward loser type voice either.

The reveal of Buggy and Shanks' past is what's done in this set. I think you're thinking of Marco's original voice in 2007 when Rockstar showed up on WB's ship. According to the wiki that was Bill Jenkins.

The Rockstar/WB stuff happened in Jaya I believe, so around episode 151 or so. Not sure when Funimation released those episodes however..

That's my concern here too. Since Mike tends to promote how much research went into casting the dub and ensuring that the continuity flows well this creates a bit of a time contradiction. In the original version there is one key point (at a much later point) where the passing of time is significant. Coby maintaining a more developed version of his original voice made the passage of time at this point more ambiguous. By dubbing him with an older voice it's almost like the dub is insisting that there was at least enough time that passed for Coby to experience puberty instead of alluding it more to Garp's training.

I don't mind the voice I just feel it makes the timeline of the dub seem to be more concrete compared to the Japanese version. Given what happens later on this could cause some confusion among dub fans in term of how much time actually passes in the series.

Well as I said those episodes aired on the original CN Toonami in 2007. Of course back then Toei had no idea Marco was going to be a major player so he was designed and treated as a background character at that point.

I could definitely see that but as long as the voice works it shouldn't be a problem

Though it probably won't happen as he looks exactly the same, (and I can't imagine anyone other than Colleen for Luffy in english at this point,) but sometimes I do wonder if Funimation would do to him what they did to adult-Goku and Edward Elric where they gave them male VA's when they had female ones in the original versions.

I don't think that will a happen because he's 17 so two years won't really make a difference. Also Goku went from being a child to an adult and Edward always had the same voice actor.

Honestly I don't think there's even a chance of that happening, it'd cause a huge uproar. And rightfully so. If anything I could see Colleen lowering the pitch a bit more like Mayumi did.

I understand the voice actor change. I mean seriously, look at how drastically different he looks. If he grew enough to barely even look like the same guy, then it only makes sense that his voice would change too. Puberty hits some folks like a ton of bricks.

Quick question assuming that the wait for season six is short and we get season six like in the summer I have a casting question for everyone. IMO akainu and aokiji were relatively easy casting choices compared to kizaru who would be the best fit to voice him because I have no idea?

I've been thinking about this for a long time and I really can't think of anyone.. The Japanese voice for him is so unique and sarcastic and I can't think of an English counterpart from the English actors I'm familiar with. I'm sure Mike will figure it out. I am going to try to listen to voice actors I'm not familiar with and try to find a possible match

was thinking the same thing kizaru has this really way of speaking that when I imagine it in English it just seems awkward but brook wasn't exactly easy to cast so I trust mike will make the right choice

Well I know we just got more than enough of him, but Christopher Smith could be a good fit. For those who don't know, he was Spandam.

I thought about Andrew love since his kumadori voice is over the top if he toned it down maybe he could work but him voicing two admirals might be too much

You know, I think it's possible that we'll see One Piece season 6 just pop up as a preoder without much of an announcement. It happened with Fairy Tail when I had no clue they licensed more and just when I heard they suddenly had the license for the rest of the anime aired up to this point they suddenly started pounding out sets.

I would be happy with this.

Funimation's April solicitations should go up this next week. If they are going to release season 6 with no break, then following the 6 week pattern S6V1 should drop in April. I am expecting a break due to the lack of info from Funimation, however. Hopefully we hear from them soon…
