I do not think that's anything special other than to make the OP tankos stand out. If anything, that's an indication of OP doing poorly in sales, because Naruto, Bleach, and Kenshin are not shiny at all. FMA's tankos started out shiny silver, but now they're rather plain.

Personally find the English tankos ugly; the resized cover images, the dumb logos, the extra "one piece" brand and the poor (annoying) fontface. The only merit to the English tankos are the paper quality, though it's the same "aired" paper that is used in mass-produced SAT/AP prep. booklets.

I don't understand why they couldn't just extend the line over the space previously occupied by the katakana. Can we not figure out that the logo says ONE PIECE?
Paper quality, I doubt they'd do any different. The Hellsing tanko I bought had better paper, but also a 14.99 MSRP. The Lupin III one I got (I'm assuming these being representative of DH and Tokyopop product) was about the same if not lesser (the paper seemed yellowed, but it was a used copy) than the Viz books.
I think the "main" font is okay, it looks the same as the scanlation font. I don't care for the font they gave Arlong… it's hard to read and seems silly, as though it's trying too hard to cast him as sinister.

It's because of idiots like me who intially read the logo as "NEP ECE". Oda apparently recieved letters of this in Japan, as he brought it up in an SBS. To be polically incorrect, if Americans (on average) are dumber than Japanese, and children are dumber than adults, the intended child audience of OP are probably going to misread the logo. In regard to Viz's choice of editing…well, Viz isn't very graphically oriented. They have poor taste with DVD covers, too; most of their "good-looking" manga is simply direct covers from the Japanse tankos. Heck, even 4Kids did a better job at removing the katakana!

You've got to keep in mind that manga is a teen-older teen oriented audience and Viz would normally lose money on the SJ line. With DH, Del Ray and Tokyopop material, both those companies are actually making money, though the latter has taken huge losses as of late. Localizing the OP manga is retarded because most teens will consider it too childish for reading, and most kids would prefer the Anime. The SJ line is simply here to boost TV attendance; this is why properties that are "good", like YYH, SK, DBZ and YGO are dangerous; without a correlating TV syndication, they're just a pitfall for Viz.
But remember that Viz is the giant among manga-translators and it has made huge profits off its other properties. It can stumble a couple times yet still bully around the other would-be manga companies (except Del Ray, which is a sleeping giant). Frankly, from the info I got at ANN, the majority of Viz's profits for Naruto are not going to come from the Anime and its merchandise (because the rumours are that Viz payed a hefty licensing fee from Studio Pierott, despite the Shogakukan-Shueisha ownership) but from the manga. Viz is betting its dice that the Naruto manga will be the primary driving force and not only boost SJ magazine sales, but perhaps give OP a "push" into record breaking sales of its own. Afterall, when surrounded by DBZ, YGO, and Naruto, there must be something Viz knows about the series that the average reader doesn't, hmm? Perhaps that OP > DBZ + YGO + Naruto in Japan?

I do not know this main font, but all the text is boldfaced in a derivation of "Dom Casual", which is one of my favourite fonts but the Viz version is just choppy and scrunchd together. Normal DC is smooth, flowing, less bolded and spaced! I prefer a scanslation's generic font to Viz's stylized monster anyday; it's easier on my eyes.

Only if Oda worked for Weekly Shounen Magazine. Del Ray -> Kondasha is the same as Viz -> Shueisha, except Del Ray hasn't grown too big for its britches and actually listens to constructive criticism. Viz doesn't give a crack (nor do I think they ever did); it's the Wal-Mart/Microsoft/Time Warner-AOL/McDonalds of manga right now. Huge and cheap.
Ohh… well that makes sense why most of the mangas I see around the stores are Viz dominent.

The World Government called a conference of various Heads of State for the specific purpose of warning them about him, so they obviously take him quite seriously.
Whitebeard might be the Strongest Man in the World, but that doesn't mean that the World Government has him on the top of the most wanted list as bounties seem to be assigned based on how much of a threat an individual is thought to represent to the World Government. As a revolutionary, Dragon should represent far more of a threat to them than a simple pirate, no matter how strong that pirate is.

It took me a while to find it, but they did.
That's just baffling for two reasons:
- the Marines in the cover story have not been altered in the slightest.
- the kanji is all but hidden behind Smoker's baton; altering it would have been considerably difficult.
It's almost like One Piece has two or three different editorial groups working on it that has almost no contact with each other. Tashigi being a Sergeant despite that rank earlier being identifed by Viz as Chief Petty Officer (which makes more sense in context anyway), Nezumi's sudden change to being a Colonel for a chapter (despite numerous previous references to him being a Captain), and a few other things that are just plain weird. I can't recall specifics without sitting down and reading the last few Shonen Jumps, but there's been some awkward wording and a few other things that seem like editorial standards are starting to slip a bit.
The kanji situation makes me wonder if they're testing the waters to see if people complain or something. That doesn't explain some other things though.

Hmm… well, the Volume 10 I saw at Hastings the other day has the Kanji on the miniarc pages changed to read Chore Boy, so I'm guessing that they're moving that way... strange that they wouldn't alter it in the latest issues though.

The problem with the word is that it has a different shape than the corresponding kanji (long versus tall); the result is a change in the look… it either has to be much smaller or oddly shaped.
And considering the meaning of Justice to the Marine, leaving it as essentially a "corporate logo" devoid of linguistic meaning, could be interesting.

"Smack" is more commonly used to represent the kissing sound, but "smek" is probably closer to the actual sound. Using "chu" in English changes the joke from him making a kissing noise to him repeating his own name over and over again.
This kanji business bugs me a bit; not so much that they're alternating it, but it's the font that they're using for it. It just doesn't look as elegant as the actual kanji and doesn't fit stylistically. If they're going to change it, then they ought to use the same font as the word Marine.

I would keep all the Japanese references and attached to the Shonen Jump is a short booklet explaining all the Japanese references.
But since Viz doesn't do that, why don't they just put little notes in the book instead of Americanizing?
I agree with Smek vs. Chu. I never heard anyone use smek as a kiss. I've always heard Mwa though.

As for "Smek/Chuu", make the damn sound NATURALLY. It sounds most like "smek" and/or "chuu." The two sound basically the same in practice, as long as you make the sound and not say "smek" or "chuu" as words. I'm fine with it, myself, but I agree that translating it is awkward.

That's open for debate. I'm not sure about the demographics of Shonen Jump's readers, but if they skew young, people are much less likely to recognize "chu" than "smek".
They could have just made a little side note that "chu" is a kissing sound and that would be it.
Switching it to "smek" is easier though and doesn't require you explain it every time he pops up.
I probably would have used "smek" or something similar myself as it's a sound I can replicate. Try it. I've never liked "mwa" as BatDan suggests as it's not a sound I can produce naturally.
Everybody hears things differently though. Toyfare Magazine also uses "koohah koohah" to represent Darth Vader's breathing, which I've always heard as "paaaaaah-keh paaaaaah-keh".

Viz doesn't have a problem with smoking in general; it's underage smoking. Sanji gets away with it because he's 19, Smoker and Paulie would also not have any problems.
As far as the name goes, I wouldn't be surprised if it was rendered as Paul when they get that far, if only to avoid the connection to Polly.

As long as comics in general still have a place in American culture, then I think its safe to say that manga has settled down quite nicely. Remember that Graphic Novel conference about two months ago? The one where Al Kahn gave his imfamous "Kids don't read" schpeil? Aside from that, every other person at that panel agreed that the manga industry is healthy and steadily growing.
On a Side Note:
Somehow, I think that Viz doing minor editing in their graphic novels may also be somewhat of a sign that manga is getting more popular. I've seen alot more younger kids (I'd say about ages 8-14) in the graphic novel sections of bookstores. Hell, I've seen more people in general reading manga now than about 4 years ago. The audience is getting wider.
