Life of Pi was pretty good. I felt…special watching it.
Oscars 2013

I liked a lot of Life of Pi, but the wheels really fell off in the last third.

Funny thing is I hated the book, but I loved the movie.
-
Tarantino wins best screenplay. Naturally.
@The:
Ang Le = Winner of Best Director.
Ah good, so David O. Russell didn't win anything, LOL.
-
Don't have any strong feelings about the Best Actress category, but it would've been cool to see Wallis win.
-
I'm so glad Lawrence won.
-
Lawrence is kinda…eh. She's just the "It Girl" in Hollywood right now, in my opinion..
-
Yes!! I'm happy that Lawerence won. She deserve it.
-
Daniel-Day Lewis… What a shocker. lol
-
No surprise there.
Though I was hoping Cooper would pull the miracle upset. He was fantastic in Silver Linings Playbook.
-
Okay Lewis, you've broken the Best Actor record. You can stop now.
I love how Streep said it so matter-of-factly.
-
@Nex:

Oh god, Tumblr is gonna be in an uproar about this…
Especially considering Quvenzhané...

You can't beat the Titan.
-
WTF, this is unprecedented!
Not even Nicholson has done this! D: -
@The:
You can't beat the Titan.
He really is a great guy. So humble and sweet. Can't fault the guy at all.
-
Daniel-Day is the Apex Predator.
-
I find it hard to judge a whole movie based on individual acts. Unless it really jumps the shark or something. Like, some would say the chaotic and "dragged out" nature of District 51's final acts ruined an otherwise good movie. I don't get it, mainly because there was alot of great elements steering the movie as a whole and it made the final acts overall satisfying.
Not saying Life of Pi was. I've yet to see it entirely, I'm almost certain it was good as a whole. If not, great.
Then again, I'm not really into the theory behind being a film critic. So take me as a casual viewer. -
-
Life of Pi: Movie of the Year; that's my bet. (Or Argo… Just cuz Ben A.)
-

Can't be, no best director nomination.
-
LOL, have you seen Lolita?
Nope. Unless you saying that the Acts or Chapters were really part of a the narrative(like it's written out or implied to you)
-
We'll see, Nex. We'll see.
-
Ah, I had a feeling Argo would win.
-
Holy Crap Academy. What are you doing? Go home, you're drunk.
-
@Nex:
Holy Crap Academy. What are you doing? Go home, you're drunk.
It's one of the most over-hyped movies of all time. Of course it won, silly-face.
-

I'm still confused. The director wasn't even nominated…
-
Aww that's two choices that I just…downright don't agree with. Argo? C'mon...ugh
-
And waddya know; they didn't run over their time slot without having to rush it.
-
I didn't see Les Mis, but Argo was definitely on the level of Lincoln and Life of Pi.
-
Almost perfect Oscars for me, but Argo as the winner…didn
t think that movie was that good...just decent. So only the most important choice was completely off..sadly not the first time and i guess maybe they wanted to somehow compensate that they didn
t nominate Affleck for best director.Well, my favourite won at least the most Oscars and the 2 i rly hoped for(visual effects and cinematographie).
Ang Lee second time best director may should have been Ben Affleck`s one ^^Waltz, Day-Lewis and Tarrantino getting their well deserved Oscars was also good to see and adorable Jennifer Lawrence i think wasn`t a bad decision either :)
-
Eh, I thought Argo was a really good movie. Of course, I only saw that, Django, and Les Miz.
Of those three, Argo was the best.
-
@The:

The only times a movie won Best Picture without even being nominated for Best Director were 1989, 1931 (when only 3 were nominated), and 1927.
It's not a common thing.

Argo is essentially a love letter to Hollywood. I saw it at TIFF and the industry people ate it up. It's a win that makes sense. Kind of.
-
Yeah it makes complete sense to me, like Brave beating Ralph and ParaNorman [/not sarcasm]. But still, I felt that Lincoln was a superior movie (albiet Argo is still a good movie by all means).
-
Daniel Day Lewis winning his third best actor makes me happy. But seriously? Argo beat Lincoln? Argo was an okay movie but nothing special, I don't see what everyone else sees in it.
-
What made Lincoln special outside of Lewis? The direction was average, and overall the movie was simply solid. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great.
I mean, personally, I would have loved to see Django win.
My rankings of the Noms were:
Django Unchained
Argo
Les Miserable
Life of Pi
Silver Linings Playbook
Amour
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Lincoln
Zero Dark Thirty -
i'm so proud of delgo for winning an oskar
-
People that say any animated movie is bad never seen Delgo.

Then again, I'm not really into the theory behind being a film critic. So take me as a casual viewer.Life of Pi's final act changes the perception of the rest of the movie. It's intended to. But the way it was executed made me question any of the aspects I had enjoyed up to that point.
It's difficult to explain without spoiling the ending. Let's just say that the philosophical point that the final part is making isn't really helped much by the strange content it used to do so. If the movie had cut off about half an hour earlier and had the same epilogue, I feel it would have been stronger. Not deep film criticism or anything, just a personal opinion.
-
Not deep film criticism or anything, just a personal opinion.
And not an uncommon. It really has turned out to be quite polarizing.
-

Wait, what the fuck?
Do you mean, "without the director being nominated"? xD
-
@Nex:

Brief version for me:
! If you want to use the ending of the movie to make the case that faith is acceptable, even good, if it helps give your life meaning or order in a chaotic and seemingly evil world, fine. It works. I would have preferred that be teased out rather than dropped in the audience's lap at the very end, but I understand.
! Do it without the carnivorous island sequence. -
Wait, what the fuck?
Do you mean, "without the director being nominated"? xD
Oh dear, thanks for pointing that out. Though it is quite more impressive that way, no?
-
Argo better than Django and Life of Pi..your having a laugh. Typical "Murica" mentality.
-

Yes the American awards show has an American mentality, your point?
-
Honestly would have loved to see Django win. BUUT in spite of Tarantino and his cohorts winning awards elsewhere, it seems like the stuffy Academy folks are too resilient in handing him an award for Best Picture. Someday…someday, at least Tarantino is getting closer to that Oscar.
-

Definitely better than both, even if it wasn't as fun as Django, which was my personal favorite movie of the year.
Plus, Argo was awesome. The only people I actually know away from the internet who disliked it have some personal issues with The Affleck. -

Yeah I hear you, but there was no way in hell an old Hollywood institution was gonna award a movie that was practically two hours of beating the piss out of Gone with the Wind.
-
wtf, Argo for Best Picture? Brave winning over Wreck-it-Ralph? Well, at least Ang Lee won Best Director for Life of Pi.
-
@Nex:
Definitely better than both
No, its not. What was special about it. I thought it was a good film but nothing about it was incredible, as apposed to Django (incredibly well written and brilliantly acted) or Life of Pi (outstanding visuals and story). Lets be real here the only reason Argo won was due to the current political climate and tension between the two nations. Its all political.
-
Hey, even i thought Argo was better than both.
For the animated one, i am disappointed. I thought it was Ralph for sure.
