Is it weird, that, I've always wanted to use a poison-type Pokemon but never have? Not sure why, really… But I've always thought of picking up a poison Pokemon in ANY Pokemon game; like Koffing, Nidoran (male or female) etc. I've used Tentacool/Tentacruel before, but, I wouldn't really classify him as a poison-type.

Finally saw all the pokemon in the Unova dex and got the shiny Haxorus. I have most of the Unova dex pokes caught, but I'm going to try to fill it all the way up
Quick question. I finished most of the game and was beginning a career as a movie star but I can't seem to use my own pokemon. I thought you just needed to do it with the rental pokemon first, but I was trying to redo one and could not. Do I need to finish the film perfectly first? Or is it only on certain movies? -
Spent today catching a lot of Pokemon for the box. Mainly ones obtained by surfing/fishing. The fact that I can catch a wild Milotic is completely amazing in every sense of the word.
Also bagged three Legendaries…..Latias, Reshiram, and Zekrom. Reshiram was by far the easiest one; I only needed to throw ONE Ultra Ball when it had red health on the very first try.
The other two were much more persistent. Latias was a pain because it constantly Psycho Shifted to remove its paralysis. Zekrom's moves were pretty hard hitting to my team, although it kept using Imprison, to no avail......both of them drained my Ultra/Timer/Luxury/Dusk balls, but eventually I got them. And no Master Ball! I still got it!
And man oh man, the wallpapers you get when you catch Zekrom….are awesome.

I know people in the thread has one of these guys…...but I'm not trying to copy! It's just......they're kinda cute and their special attack is pretty damn high. And I wanted a psychic type.
Next I'll look into another grass type and a dragon. And don't worry.....I'm not that unoriginal to use Haxorus. Maybe Dragonite?
Speaking of, I'm 17 Pokemon away from completing the Unova pokemon and to get my shiny!

So, did anyone else sign up for the wi-fi tournament? I'm participating, although I expect to fail miserably, especially since they decided to make it a doubles tournament for some godforsaken reason
-
So, did anyone else sign up for the wi-fi tournament? I'm participating, although I expect to fail miserably, especially since they decided to make it a doubles tournament for some godforsaken reason
Because doubles is awesome and invokes entirely different types of strategy but largely gets ignored for the usual 1 on 1's?
Personally, I'd love it if huge giant swathes of the main game were double battle enforced areas, make you reeeeally think about your team synergy and get a compatible pair in the front… rather than just making due the handful of times you have to double battle.
-
my problem isn't so much that it's double persay so much as there has only been 1 single tournament, and only in Japan, despite single being the dominant in game match type. If they used doubles more in the game itself I'd have less of a problem with it, or if they actually did both types of tournaments with relatively equal frequencies
-
A double tournament!? FFFFFF!!
I'd so participate in that. Double Battles is my mian focus when it comes to pokemon games. It's indepth creative, and makes use of Pokemon that were made with teamwork in mind. It also makes the whole tier on Smogon irrelevant, because someone could be using 2 Ubers and still lose to lower tiers due to tactics alone. Shame I don't have BW2 yet.Single Battles tend to fall under the same shed, and I'm not longer of fan of them. Triples are a new mess in its own, and needs a bit more years to be refined. Rotation needs a bit more attention, because it's potenially a step above from Singles. Otherwise, people might see it as gimmicky. But yeah, Doubles are great! My issue with it that even in the games that do focus on double battles, the developers never seem to think outside the box when it comes down to choosing thier teams or AI patterns. I never really saw or remember a single crafty AI team. Even in Battle Subway.
-
There were a couple of rotation battles in which I genuinely felt challenged to think about how to go about it, which was pretty refreshing. I think it would benefit a lot from moves that are specifically tailored to play into the system, just like they took time to make moves and pairs of pokemon oriented specifically towards double battles.
Personally, I didn't care much for double battles in Ruby/Sapphire, but then enjoyed them much much more after Pokemon Colosseum, which surprised me by virtue of having a main game that forced every battle to be a double battle.

Im in post game and want to level some critters like teh pseudo legendary's. So what im asking is there a place where there is like a ton of infinite re battling trainers? Like a battle house like in platinum.
Also hidden grottoes are quite annoying, trying to find a Bagon is really annoying also. -

The latter, unforunately. I've got to start taking abilities to account when building up for competitive play…...
EDIT: Caught Mesprit, Uxie, and Azelf last night, and all three of them just wouldn't stay in the Pokeball! Timer and Dusk balls again saved my hide. Although, I forgot that I already transfered my Pearl's Mesprit beforehand....

Did you get the hidden ability Eevee in Castelia City yet? If not, you still have a chance for a Magic Bounce Espeon.
I haven't played much recently. Last thing I did was beat the E4 again, then went and caught Volcarona. Don't know what I'll do next.

Wi-fi tournaments aren't bracket style. You get a ranking (everyone starts at 1500) and every win or loss will adjust that ranking (probably based on opponent's ranking and how many of your pokemon survived). So you can battle as many times as you like, although you're final placement will only be given if you did 10 or more battles. ALso, disconnecting too much can disqualify you not only from the current tournament, but also future ones appearently

Its not really, get the Iv boosting items, Pokerus and Vitamins and you Iv train a pokemon in 15 minutes or so from my experience, got 3 boxes full of trained ones, which I never use because I never enter in competitons lol, used to figth friends but now I'm the only one that plays.

@The:
Robby… You are the first person I have seen rock a Dunsparce.
Yeah, it was really great. Serene Grace is an amazing ability. Made headbutt into an amazing move, (60% flinch and stab) and Thunder really worthwhile despite the lack of stab. (60% chance of paralyze plus a lot of strength.) Iron tail (lower defense) Rock Slide, poison jab… Good stuff. And the most recent gen brought it coil. I keep meaning to try Togepi with the same ability, never quite run the distance with it.
I'd use one again, but Sandshrew aside, I TRY to not repeat myself. There's 650 things, (about 300 families) there's really no reason to use the same thing twice.
I played the first three gens on emulator as well so I've had a couple other teams, but no real way or checking what they were. Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Cacnea, Sharpedo, Mightyena, Lucario and Lugia stand out as ones I know for sure I used. Always want to use bellsprout... never do. They just show up late in every game now instead of super early like they should.
Robby, you've got some damn good teams. You really love Sandslashes, huh?
I do. I love the design and colors on sandshrew AND sandslash, and they were so early in the franchise… (an early anime episode had one beat the snot out of pikachu back when that meant something). And the fact that their natural movepools sucked meant I always had to really work with them and customize them and love them despite their faults. But I used them every game for like six games, and I've raised a shiny one to level 100 now, and I know the steel mole is superior in every way... I can give them a rest.
Besides, I have emolga now to be the useless thing I like the design of that has terrible stats.
Absol, Mienfuu, and Ferrothorn have all been the surprise amazing asskickers. I really liked Venipede and prankster Liepard, but neither have really amazing stats.

Its based on the accuray of your own moves so I don't see how it change from a generation to another unless the accuary of said move was toned down.

I think I encountered a glitch. I was playing against my friend and he one-shot my Shedinja with the move Earthquake. I wanted to know if this has happened to anyone else?

Okay, seems more fun like this, I would be able to enjoy it somewhat even with an average team. But I need to take my time lol, I don't have an entire team ready now, only random pokemon with no synergy between them.

Those are EVs. IVs are the stats the pokemon is "born" with, you have to breed eggs until you disrupt entire ecosystems to get good IVs.
Edit: Now that we have the cafe and the dojo, EV training is even easier. I'm glad Game Freak makes breeding and EV training easier almost every game.
-
I meant EVs yeah.
I don't have a problem with IVs either with the training items I can get a 31IV stat pokemon to pass the stat around to the pokemon I want.

Anybody hate hidden grottoes as much as I do? Specially if you want a certain pokemon, like i want Bagon.

What was your opponent? It might have had a special ability like No Guard that ignores Shedinja's ability. ANd there's a ton of moves that can hit it that aren't technically super effective.
-

Yep, hate it. I'd go to the Dream World, after 10000 points you can get Bagon at Rugged Mountain.

Some of the moves he used before hand missed because of Wonder Guard. But the fact is, when it happened a second time Shedinja wasn't affected at all.

Caught more legendaries…..this time, Cresselia, Regirock, Regice, and Heatran. All of which required multiple tries and tons of ultra/timer/dusk/heal balls. -_-
Did you get the hidden ability Eevee in Castelia City yet? If not, you still have a chance for a Magic Bounce Espeon.
Huh? Where is it? I caught an Eevee in the grass of Castelia City, but that's probably not it….

Yeesh, you're not kidding. I mean….I've given my Emolga all kinds of vitamins and special wings, but compared to the others....its stats make me want to cringe. Magnezone fills the electric niche on my team a lot better. But I love using it!
I guess I'm a sucker for any electric rodent that resembles Pikachu (including the little guy himself, too)

Oh…..gah, I feel dumb now. But thanks a ton.
It kinda sucks that my Espeon is at already at level 50…..so either I retrain the special Eevee.....or use it to get another Eevevolution.
Also, I've started to train a Dratini and a Liligant.

Emolga has the worst electric monster stats in all of gen5. It also has the worst flying stats. And it can't learn fly.Its better than Plusle, minune, or pachirusu… but that's not saying much. It's pretty terrible but I love the design enough to keep it around anyway. There's stuff it can do, but its never amazing. (Hidden power ice goes a ways on it though. Plus you can do lots of evasion and paralyze stuff.) I have a soft spot for pathetic things. I also really like Bellsprout.

Grab the eevee with the special ability. Magic Bounce is SO good its worth the effort. Its basically a built in indefinite magic coat. Besides, it might take forever to get to level 50 going through the game, but near the end of the game it only takes a few battles to get anything that high. (Though it won't have the EVs built up.) Just go find some audinos from the final areas.
Just look at all the stuff it just… deflects!

Same here. It's just too important at this point.
Aerial Ace, Spark, and Light Screen are useful moves for mine. Too bad there's few physical electric moves.

Huh, so Natu/Xatu can also have magic bounce? I've always loved that pokemon, now I have more of a reason to make space for one on my team.

You can't get it until the post-game. Other than that there are no conditions.

So sick of running into the same 3 Pokemon while trying to fill out the Dex.

Magic Bounce is like the best ability ever.
I've made enough people rage quit on the first turn competitively just because of Magic Bouncing back Spikes/Stone Edge.

Moody says hello.
-
Moody is generally banned in competitive play/fields because of its power, so I pretty much don't include it.
-
Been catching more and more Pokemon. Honestly, the Habitat feature makes trying to find Pokemon a lot more fun…..like you're trying to finish a scavanger hunt. Good and bad things happened.
The Good: I thank all of you that suggested the special Eevee…...I trained and again got an Espeon, the one with Magic Bounce. Definitely a better ability than before. Gave it Shadow Ball and Reflect, so now it has a better moveset than my old Espeon, too!
Dratini involved to Dragonair, and I'm getting closer to my Dragonite. Good times.
The Bad: I also mentioned I was training a Liligant, right? Not the best grass type but a worthy counter to my physical Serperior. Her special is pretty good. I got her to level 47, savoring the Own Tempo + Petal Dance combo…..until.....whoa! I found out you can teach it Dream Eater. A special psychic move that takes HP! I can take down those pesky Poison types and change up her moveset! I just need Sleep Powder and-
surprise, surprise! I fall into a rookie's trap. The Pokemon you raise from scratch is ALWAYS superior to the evolved form you catch later on. And here was no exception. The only way I can get Sleep Powder is Pelilt (sp?) learns it at level 10. My Liligant was caught in Lostlorn Forest.
…...now I'm swamped with two choices. Either I train her pre-evolved form and start over to get the Sleep Powder + Dream Eater combo I so crave, or say "screw it" and change up the moveset a different way.
....Unfortunately, there's not too many good moves she can learn as she is. Guess my choice is made for me.
-
Liligen was never much of attacker for me. Well, 1vs1. She's excellent in 2vs2 or if she is given some support moves but her or party(like Sunny Day if you choose her ability that utilizes it). I didn't know she could use Sleep Powder… I kinda had mine with Teeter Dance instead(again, for Double Battles). It also had Leech Seed and Growth. After some battles, I found Leech Seed to be useless for my setup since she wasn't a wall like Vanasaur. As for the 4th move, Solarbeam, since she benifits Sunny day team, buffs with Growth, and it was a powerful enough STAB attack with 100% accuracy.
Wish I had my battle video to show how I utilized her, but I remembered I saved over it for a battle I had with a dude that used a Magikarp.... I stalled it for 15 turns and wanted to save that memory. Bad choice. I'll make a new one later this week if random online is still active.
-
Actually, I kinda want to keep Teeter Dance…..then again, sleep is a more damaging condition, isn't it? Pokemon can naturally recover from sleep and confusion, but at least with sleep, they don't have a chance to attack.......although they can hurt themselves with confusion......
As with Solarbeam, I've used it on Pokemon before, but I prefer moves that can go in one turn. The additional turn to wait is where ANYTHING can go wrong; your opponent OHKOS you, inflicts a status condition, use U-Turn/Baton Pass to swap out, or uses a speed priority move to finish you off before you can hit....
There's a lot of variables here. And testing out what works is half of the fun of training.
I remembered I saved over it for a battle I had with a dude that used a Magikarp…. I stalled it for 15 turns and wanted to save that memory.
Ha, nice.
-
That's why I use it on a Sunny Day team. Solar Beam goes off instantly under it. And Teeter Dance is useful for Doubles since it can confuse both pokemon on the foe's side(assuming you used Protect on the parnter). It's mostly for mindgames and trolling. Sometimes people would switch out, or try to attack aggressively…. Most of the time they rage quit if they attack themselves for 3 turns in a row while I stall and buff while laughing.
Sleep is okay, but I have a gripe for it. Mainly for Darkrai, or Smeargle using it's infamously scary sleep move(it makes both pokemon sleep in doubles, and it's hard as hell to counter).
-
Oh, right. Sunny Day works; I'm always afraid to use it because it'll beef up the enemy fire types or screw over my water types…...and I did not know Teeter Dance confuses everyone (but the user) in play.
-
The Bad: I also mentioned I was training a Liligant, right? Not the best grass type but a worthy counter to my physical Serperior. Her special is pretty good. I got her to level 47, savoring the Own Tempo + Petal Dance combo…..until.....whoa! I found out you can teach it Dream Eater.
Teeter dance, quiver dance, and petal dance. Make some real use of that Own Tempo ability. Confuse your enemies on the first turn, set up (tank a hit or two while you get the stats up) then use a heal move of your choice to get your health back up (giga drain or synthesis) and then go to town with petal dance. Thanks to quiver dance it'll be even stronger than before, faster, and you'll be able to take special hits better.
You can even quiver dance two or three times if the opponent is ideal or confused enough. If you get a first opponent you can take a hit or two on, you're good to go and will just slaughter anything else.
-
Sunny Day also doubles the power of Growth. So you'd get sharp SpAtck increaces. Sunny day is great if it benefits your team, and if you are fully aware and prepared that it can also help the enemy. Unfortunately, Rain Dance teams are a different ball park. There's so much setups that I would define as absolutely broken.
-
Everyone really knows their metagame here. :)

I….really like this set-up. I'd get rid of Synthesis for Giga Drain (more pp and you can heal and attack at the same time), but I already have Teeter Dance and Quiver Dance. And of course, the glorious Petal Dance.
The only drawback is that she's not so lucky against dragon/steel/fire/bug/flying/poison types, the first two of which are relatively common in battles. But I guess Teeter Dance would help her stall until Quiver Dance powers her enough to overcome any resistances. And since Petal Dance has a base power of 120 and goes consectively….
Maybe I should forget Dream Eater and Sleep Powder.......yeah, let Serperior be the diverse grass type. He's already got Aqua Tail to fight against steel and fire types.

I agree, but you're never going to know what your opponent will have. They could have fire types with ridiculous attack power or tanks with Solarbeam…...like I said, there's so many variables.
Oh, Rain Dance is broken because it gives Thunder 100% Accuracy, doubles some Pokemon speeds, washes any status effects for some Pokemon, and heals Ludicolo, right?
Dream Eater was kind of a useless move after gen1 for me… Because there's always that chance the opponent will wake up on the following turn. It's a small chance, but it's not worth having two move slots for.
Hmmm…...you're right.
It's settled. I'll keep Liligant as she is, and keep Teeter Dance and Quiver Dance.
-

I was thinking Politoad(instant rain ability) and Kingdra(sweeper), but you are close. I'm usually scared out of my mind whenever I'm in the position to deal with a Kingdra sweeping my whole team with Hydro Pump before making a single move. It's a bit strange since I barely seen the move miss either. My only tactic I managed with at the time was using Explosion the moment I saw it, but eh… that got nerfed. Now I just deal with it, otherwise I'd be making an entirely different team with the mindset to counter Rain teams(or just Kingdra).

Not every critter can deal with every situation. That's why you have teams after all! The biggest downside is actually that petal dance locks you into that move for two or three turns, if your opponent has one of those counters ready. (If its not a full team of 6 the odds aren't that bad.) But thats why you do that stat and speed boosting first, even resistant critters have trouble with 120 STAB boosted attacks that go first.
Also, your base stats have to be decent before it really starts working. My Lilligant could never quite make it work at about level 50, always died during the setup because she just couldn't tank the two turn setup well enough… but around 65 or 70 it started working beautifully. (Same goes for Shuckle, if you ever decide to try THAT insanity.)
And no, it would be silly to try that against a fire type.
Oh, Rain Dance is broken because it gives Thunder 100% Accuracy, doubles some Pokemon speeds, washes any status effects for some Pokemon, and heals Ludicolo, right?
And boosts water moves, don't forget. STAB surf or hydro pump that have been boosted are scary things.
Sunny day is balanced out in that it helps plant types… but also helps fire types. (I guess in theory increasing thunder's accuracy is supposed to be the rainy day equalizer?)

Ah, I get you. Kingdras are very difficult to work around. It doesn't help they only have one weakness.

Yeah, locking Petal Dance can be a problem…..but again, that's what the buff moves are for.

Don't worry, I'm still in the training phase. Everyone else is at 65 or so, and I'm trying to bring Espeon, Dragonair, and Liligant to their level to get that full team experience. I know I have to repeat the process every time I want to add someone new, but I believe in equalizing my Pokemon's levels to the letter.

Yep.

And despite its accuracy, the enemy's Hydro Pump always manages to hit me…...even without rain.....

Well, Sunny Day caters to fire and grass types, while Rain Dance caters to water and electric types. Four very common types.
