@gum:
Well you are being just as bad as him now bad mouthing the dbz dub. I for one love it and it's something i grew up with. Yes I admitt some of the lines do sound off, but as you said it was like their first anime and it's a classic. I also love the one piece dub so don't shoot me :P
Nobody said you can't ENJOY the Terrible DBZ Dub, however, but all the criteria that anime fans judge the quality of an English adaption, Objectively, DBZ is a terrible adaptation. More to the point, most, if not all of the sins committed by the 4kids Dub of One Piece that fans decry it for are also Sins the FUNimation DBZ Dub is or was guilty of during its production:
First, what Fans complain about 4kids Doing to One Piece:
! 1: Editing of Content to make the show acceptable to 5 year olds (eventually eased up some after moving from Basic cable to Cartoon Network)
2: Outright removal of entire episodes (Little Garden is the biggest, but not only Example)
3: Complete replacement of the Musical score including opening theme, ending theme, and all Background music. (HE TOOK A BITE A GuM GUM)
4: Changing of Character names for no reason whatsoever (Other than "Zolo", Merry Go, "Boosts", Luffy's attacks, etc)
5: Poor dialog writing that outright changes what is being said (This REALLY doesn't need an example)
6: The addition of Jokes into the original script that simply weren't there originally to dumb down the material (Everything that came out of Mr. 3's mouth, to say the least)
7: Poor acting and questionable voice actor choices/direction (Luffy's Voice actress SHOUTS EVERYTHING SHE SAYS. Sanji… dear god... Chopper having a diff voice for Heavy Point?)
8: Characters have random accents out of nowhere with no such precedent in Japanese (Sanji and Robin, as well as tons of minor characters)
Now, let's compare to the FUNi Dub of DBZ
! 1: Editing of Content to make the show acceptable to 5 year olds (like 4kids, the editing eased up after moving from Basic cable to Cartoon Network, Took FUNi 10 years to fix this)
2: Outright removal of entire episodes (Episode 1, the Mr. Robot Episode, Most of the training for the Saiyans. Took FUNi 10 years to fix this)
3: Complete replacement of the Musical score including opening theme, ending theme, and all Background music (Again, took them 10 years to fix this)
4: Changing of Character names for no reason whatsoever (Omitting the "Son" in "Son Goku", "Tenshinhan" to "Tien", "Mr. Satan" to "Hercule Satan", even in the uncut dub) (This has never been fixed)
5: Poor dialog writing that outright changes what is being said (ANY Bit of dialog could be used here. "Your Father was a BRILLIANT SCIENTIST", "Not very much job security") (Very few of them were fixed)
6: The addition of Jokes into the original script that simply weren't there originally to dumb down the material ("Cat Loves Food, Yeah yeah Yeah!", "Mondo Cool", "Look Vegeta! People Popcorn!") (Never fixed)
7: Poor acting and questionable voice actor choices/direction ("THIS. IS. GREAT. I. FEEL. GREAT. I. CAN. DO. THIS.", anyone Freeza opened his mouth, Chris Sabat plays everybody) (None fixed after ep 66)
8: Characters have random accents out of nowhere with no such precedent in Japanese (Oolong is from Brooklyn, Jheese is from Space Australia) (Never fixed)
You can say #7 is subjective, but every other one is an objective observation. some of those got fixed in a DVD Release a DECADE Later, which isn't entirely fair to 4kids. They didn't have One Piece NEARLY That long, and their attitude towards the Yugiou series towards the end was reaching out to fans of the Japanese version to try to make things right. They were releasing uncut subtitled eps on their YT channel. Given 10 years with One Piece, 4kids may have moved to fix at least some of the problems the FUNimation dub of DBZ eventually fixed.
I think it's stupid that modern fans attack 4kids for all the horrible crap they did to One Piece, but give FUNi a pass on the DBZ dub due entirely to nostalgia goggles. You can enjoy something, and like that it calls back to your childhood but still objectively realize that it's terrible. The fact that it fails all the criteria we now hold anime dubs up to, doesn't mean you can't enjoy it, but you have to acknowledge that those failings DO exist.
