Honestly, they could copy Smash to the very end. I'd still buy the game.
If Smash Bros. did have the characters they had, I'm pretty sure that hardly anyone would care about it. That's the way I feel about this. I'd love a Sony Smash game.

Yeah hopefully new game modes will prove me wrong though the arenas seem over the top enclosed cage matches.
Sony should realise that these kinds of games are not best suited for short 5 minute bursts, conversely the party aspect really takes off when you're locked in a 20 minute stock match with friends
How can you even tell how much health people have?
And as you guys said before, the impact in smash bros just feels so much more powerful and hilarious.
When you kill three people in smash bros at the same time, everyone's laughing. (Unless you have that one kid)
I never expected this game to better than Smash.
And for me it doesn't have to. The game still seems like alot of fun.
I'd love to fight with some of Sony's character.
Just give me a somewhat descent single player campain and loads of stuff to unlock and i'll be happy.
Here's another gameplay vid.
Drake looks fun to play as.
There seems to be no items. Without those and the satisfying juggling and launching of your opponents offscreen, it lacks the two things I find most fun in SSB.
Kinda weird to wish a game is more of an copy, but the sheer jubilant chaos of Smash brothers just looks more fun.
If I can bash in the faces of boring current gen characters with Spector from ape escape, my purchase is guaranteed, however.
Big Daddy? Are they running out of Sony-exclusive characters or something? The game looks fun though :)
^ Well it's not like they have a shit-ton onf Sony exclusive characters to throw in the game though that's the sole reason for why they're throwing in third party characters like Big Daddy.

I think I saw one of the characters pick up an item and toss it early in the playthrough above at about 1:10. It's not the mayhem of Smash Brothers in terms of items, but looks like they might at least be implemented.
I got to play a few rounds at E3 yesterday…
Yeah, there are items. It took me a while to figure out how to pick one up.
The battle system is interesting. Basically what Will said is true, from what I could tell. Your attacks don't do damage to your opponent, but they build up your special bar. The only way to get points is to hit your opponent with one. As far as I could tell, a level three special kills everyone on-screen (though I think Big Daddy's wasn't exactly an insta-kill, but it might as well have been).
It was weird because it's not an intuitive way to fight at all. Even when they explained the rules to me, it still took me a minute to realize I had to use a special if I wanted to win.
They were pretty generous with our playtime. We got to play three rounds at 3 minutes each. Played as Parappa, Sweet Tooth and Fat Princess.
I feel like a strategy could be to use your 1 and 2 specials effectively since they take less time to build up than a lv. 3 special. I won a round with Sweeth Tooth thanks to a well-timed Lv.2 attack that hit everyone.
It was still a lot of fun, but I'm doubting that it could have as much depth as other fighting games.
So far the only thing I that can be expanded on here is working on a way to balance a collision system.
I find building up super meters with no sign of health just fine actually and I quite like when games find alternatives to heath bars.
But I can see this combat system getting boring really quick if all regular attacks has the same impact. What made Smash bros work was increasing how much you can knock back or stun opponents with multiple damage percentages. This way every single attack has numerous different ways to criple an opponent. Its a good factor of unpredictablity.
If all attacks were to stagger exactly the same, then there is almost no unpredictability, especially in a game that demand it(otherwise, they should have just made a regular 2D fighter with no huge stages).
But this is just observation. I'm not sure how it would play if I were to play it.
Though I don't want to turn this into the official "Bitch and Moan Over a Party Game" thread there is one thing that really irks me about supplementing a health bar/percentage meter with this super move formula. See the thing is, when it when you look at the essence of a fighting game, the thing that makes it so addictive is that you are in complete control of the outcome and can fashion a strategy to achieve your victory through either utilizing a key character strength, trying to outwit an opponent through anticipating their moves or even trying to implement mind games through patterns and off-beat timing ect. Whether the fighting system is bare bones 1 on 1 or even built under a rock paper scissors system you are in control and can rein the system to fit your own pace. Conversely, this game seems to look like a running race juxtaposed to a fighter. Each player has one incentive, to fill the bar up. Now you can't choose to avoid danger like in brawl or constantly be on the defense/counter side of fighting, that bar is your one and only goal. This feels like it would be great for a mini-game segment within Sony Smash Brothers (like a time attack unlimited hp) for unlocks but I think if a game is dominated by supers, players need a pretty reasonable health bar to even gameplay and game styles out.
Ok. The following modes seem to be confirmed;
Time Battle, Stock Battle, Tournament Mode, Practice Mode, Challenge Mode, Arcade Mode, Story Mode.
Seems people can vote on characters they want to be in the game on their Facebook page.
Rayman and Goku are among them.

If these characters get in the game (especially Goku) this game will be boss as hell
Interesting on the poll. Quite a few of them are either locks or pretty heavily rumored (Cole/Crash/Ratchet in the former category, Yorda in the latter).
In other words, I doubt the poll is about getting new characters but more about getting people hyped for the characters that are actually already in the game. So the question is, which of those characters aren't in the game?

Goku seriously !? whoever came up with that idea should be hit in the head with a brick.

Does Goku even appeal to the demographic the game is targeting? I mean where I live the Dragon Ball franchise has not appeared on morning/after school televsion for a very long time. Even when Kai came out it was pushed back to a late night Cartoon Network time slot.

I think it's a strange choice to. But then again, it'll probably sell really well when they add him.
People would go crazy over a battle between him and Cloud.
Goku would sell this game like hot bread in some foreign markets. In Latin America you can still catch Dragon Ball Z reruns during the day.
Granted, these are also the markets in which piracy is widespread.
edit: some of those characters give me epic memories: croc, crash, spyro, tomba, fortesque. Also, saw the suggestion of Spike from Ape Escape and I suddenly miss playing that game.
as it stands currently this is the ranking and votes:
I'm surprised and annoyed that no ape escape characters are on there
Well at the very least, Goku being in this isn't as weird as Danica Patrick in SEGA Allstars Racing.
Some more info about the gameplay
I don't remember his name, but the main character from Medievil is getting my hopes up.
That would be sir Daniel. This game could some more cartoony characters besides sly, so would be awesome if they add him.
Currently play Jeanne D'Arc on the psp.
Would love if they added her. Sadly that'll probably never happen.
She was in Warriors Orochi 3 (as was Ayane and Ryu) so it's possible.
I want that annoying guy who used to do Sony's E3's in as this game's version of the Punching Bag
I want to nominate Dr Nefarious and Steven Butler. Where can I do this?
The facebook page, they added a few more character pictures to vote on.
yay ape escape! although i'd rather a named character
Goku seriously !? whoever came up with that idea should be hit in the head with a brick.
Goku would be a strange choice, but who knows? It might work.
I'm surprised that Snake isn't part of the Top 5; He's been a part of Playstation history ever since the original MGS came out. Good to see Crash & Spyro at the top though; Two of my favorite PS characters back in the day. :D

That's not the same Jeanne as in Warriors Orochi 3 and Bladestorm.
Both obviously are based on the same famous historical figure (Joan of Arc/Jeanne D'arc).
But the Psp game, makes it more of a fantasy story with elves, beastmen and magic.
Jeanne is also able to transform into different kinds of forms through her bracelet, complete with new skills.
Which would make for some nice supers.
But yeah, while i keep dreaming.. might as wel throw some Suikoden characters in there.
All the main Suikoden titles are PS exclusive.
Riou/Tir Mc Dohl and Luca Blight please.

good to see who the top three are.
if any characters were to make it in a smash bros like game it is them.
Wait, by Jade do they mean Beyond Good and Evil Jade? Because if that's so, we need some kind of cult strike team on this shit.

Yeah its Jade
So Raziel is in the new poll?
Yes, would like that very much - please?!
I'm actually happy about Toro. He was fun and adorable in SFxT. I know they probably won't, but I hope they bring back his (and Kuro's) theme from SFxT, or any other remix of it.

Happiest song in the world.
I wonder which version of Jak they will be using. Im hoping for the Jak 1 version without guns but with light and dark jak
It will probably be future Jak, seeing as he was most of the Jaks used. Would be cool if he had more eco attacks than guns, though. I imagine it would work like in Jak 3, though. Light eco is used in defensive and movement abilities, guns are used for main attacks (both close and long range) and dark eco mode is his special bar, filled with large range powerful attacks. I would be perfectly fine with that.
Yeah that could be cool. I just hope they wont him make him another gun fighter.
As long as he has his square-X-Square-circle combo I'm fine. Just no Light Jak healing Haxx.

But Jak 1 looks… ugh...
I'm not saying the "OMG so grimdark" Jak is the best thing ever... but it looks better to me.
I'd be fine if they took away the guns to make him different though.
Wasn't really talking about his looks, more his fighting style.
The one's i want to see in this game are Cole, Sora and Crash.
I think the original Jak looked a lot better than what they changed him to in 2. I was never a fan of that.
this is so awsome! me and my friends always still have super smash brawl days regularly ! cant wait for a new battle style
