Lunatic mode is so evil that I find it scary that there is an even harder difficulty if you defeat it

@Cyan:
Ricken/Nowi (because literally every other choice is horrendously creepy)
Donnel's ok. He doesn't seem that old, and their personalities work together quite well actually. I tried using Gaius this time and… well yeah that seemed weird. The really creepy thing is that the game seems to suggest that she should marry GREGOR of all people. I like Gregor and all, but he's the oldest choice there is!
@The:
It's fair game though
Luciana and Male MU sound like the closest kind of "feels canon" equivalent that Chrom x Fem MU has. I'm sure it's a pretty okay pairing.
It might be written ok, but you're still having a child with your best friend's daughter. I'd agree that Chrom x Fem MU has a very canon feel to it, but I don't think Male MU has an equivalent.
Some of the support conversations can get to be really awkward when one or both are already married. I have Sumia still referring to Chrom as "my love" despite the fact that he married someone else and had Lucina already. But the worst is when Cordelia is already married and is getting advice on how to get a guy's attention that she likes.
-
I would say Tharja is the most "canon" pairing to a Male MU, and even that's kind of a stretch.
Also it turns out the game points out how ridiculous it is if you get Chrom and Olivia to marry.

I wish we could see the weddings
If only to see Tharja curse who ever the MU marries and Sumia and Cordelia brutally murder Olivia
-

The thing is
Tharja and Fem MU was already her basically lesbianing it up (excellently enough) as much as it'd allow
And I'm pretty sure it's the exact same stuff with male MU, since I can't imagine any of it being changed (especially the way she talks about the MU in other people's support convos) maybe just a little bit more explicitly romantic in their own.
Like stalker for sure, but as a romance option I'm not sure if that… gives it that much more credit over anyone . . . . . . . . . .
-
I personally have no problems pairing Nowi with anyone else, since she's actually one of the oldest characters beside Tiki. Some peoples seem to forget that. Who knows, maybe she had a husband once and she lost it to time and she act young to forget about it or something like that? I do think it's sad that she'll live older than her husband and probably older than her daughter too since Nah seem to age more normally. And… it's just a game after all.
But yeah, after all, that come from the girl who like to marry her avatar with
! the ex despotic mad king Gangrel and who can't wait to marry her avatar to the Conqueror of Valm, Walhart so I might not thinking clearly…
-
She still looks, acts, and sounds like a little kid so the squeamishness is still justified, I feel. The whole ''oh they're really much older than they look'' justification in these situations will never overturn the pandering undertones.
At least her English voice isn't the high-pitched nails-on-a-chalkboard squeaky that comes standard with ''cute'' little girls in Japanese dubs.
-
Ok, so I know everyone loves Donny and all but … frankly, I still can't really get that excited about him. For some reason even though he's a solid unit, he's still overshadowed so much by my other fighters, like Sumia, MU, Chrom, Vaike and especially Lon'qu (seriously, I give that guy a bronze sword and leave him be in the middle of the field and he kills half the map without getting hit.) It's even the case where I have Donny paired with Lissa, and as soon as she became a sage she's now able to kill ANYTHING and usually finishes the kills for Donny.
Does he get more exciting upon reclassing?
-
Did you reclass him once he learned both of his Villager skills? Once you promote him to something that doesn't have really sucky base stats he starts racking up good level ups like no one's business.
-
Villager totally sucks as a class. As long as Donnel is a villager he will fail to impress. Leveling him to 15 villager is the pain one must endure to unlock the awesome.
I went villager to fighter to hero with him (in normal, mercenary in hard), and by the time he turned into a hero he was basically invincible in either difficulty. He'll only stop being the best character once stat caps come into play. Once stats are no longer a factor and only the current class and selected abilities matter, Donnel is quite ordinary. But that's endgame stuff, and up until then Donnel and his kid (assuming you passed on aptitude) are complete world beaters.
-
Ah, I see, it's more of a case of old Fire Emblem habits getting in the way. I have him as a villager at level 21 now. I figured it would be best to reclass at level 30, but then now I think about it at this point he'll reach caps anyway.
Alright, in that case it's mercenary time. Time Donny be strong man like Gregor!
-
Donnel's reclass options are kinda poorly thought-out as neither uses Lances. It seemed like they should have made it Knight and Cavalier, or make him like Ross, and use and Axes first instead. I dunno, just those little things annoy me.
-
My Donnel still decimated with bronze swords though, so I wasn't really bothered by that.
-

I kind of agree with this. While I don't care that much for knights or cavaliers, I was hoping there'd be a usable foot lance user like the Halberdier in PoR and RD. Nephenee was and still is one of my favorite units ever and when I saw Donny being a foot unit using lances I was excited.
Sure, he'll still be a badass, but it's sad to see one of my favorite FE classes being continuously absent from the game.
-
I personally think Donnel is good Stahl's the one that befuddles me.

I completly agree on missing playable Soldiers and preferring Donnel to have been one instead of the Villager. Of course, a good deal of the Class options do bug me a bit, but that's another topic.
-
If you make him a Hero, Donnel effectively becomes the Ike of this game.
-
I had my Donnel become a hero and without using any stat increasing items he maxed out everything except magic and resistance by level 17. Dude is a monster.
Also an added bonus: he has a skill that is triggered by x2 luck that when triggered doesn't waste a weapon charge. He maxed his luck at 48 for me early on so he more or less wastes no weapon charges for me.
-
I personally think Donnel is good Stahl's the one that befuddles me.
Stahl turned out pretty good for me, Sully was the Cavalier that didn't perform in my game. His speed was only averageish so he wasn't doubling enemies all the time but he was a pretty solid tank.
-
^ It's his jobbing so easily that bothers me every since I promoted him I've barely used him out of fear he can wind up a liability at the worse time.
-
garbled rage Stupid challenge map with a million stupid mages . . . . . (just before chapter 6 here)
I'm noticing more Fire Emblem icons around here. The game is making it's rounds.
-
So after giving up on Lunatic version after chapter 2 I'm just going to do hard mode instead. Looking at a few enemy stats some of them have stats doubled from hard to lunatic.
-
Just got to the point in which I can start recruiting the children. What I am wondering though, how do people here manage to balance all the characters? I am so used to have around 7-12 characters always realiably on the front lines, and now that Lucina is in the mix and there's the promise of so many offsprings, I have more characters than I feel I'd have the time to raise.
I guess it's just Fire Emblem for me was never a grindfest experience, and now I feel like in order to actually complete the game (ie. complete all the in-game maps) I have to grind extensively. To be honest it's kind of a turn-off.

Yea that's one thing I hate about Fire Emblem games, yet at same time love them. I love that there are so many characters and they all have a personality that you can find those you like, and so on.
Yet at same time there is just so many character and I hate not using them. I mean you have soo many of your army just sitting on the bench. Be nice if they would make the game a much bigger epic map. So you can have like 30 people at a time going around. Get some strategy of flanking enemies, or high ground, ect. But no your stuck usually grabbing 8-10 people and levaing 20 sitting on the bench.
While in past games I didn't always grind everyone, but this game they did every character so well that I find myself grinding not to get them all powerful so I can use them all. I have the ones I like, but I find myself grinding their "supports" so I can see all that fun extra support convos that are relaly well done.
-
That's why I think I liked 4 best, as almost every character you got in that game is just an overpowered monster, unless you're name is Arden, and they don't give you a lot of people.
In other news:

Just jumping in the thread here.
Got this stellar game a week ago, and it's the one game that has occupied my mind the most since I played through Mother 3 last summer. Good god, I never thought I'd be this invested in the characters and be this into a strategy game (before this, I just didn't see the allure) After I finish Awakening, I'm thinking of picking up another FE game, which do you guys suggest?
Oh, and on the subject of Donnel: Yeah, the guy's a bona-fide monster. Got this dude smackin' ruffians around with bronze axes and shit.

Hands down my favorite FE game is still Rekka No Ken, just known as Fire Emblem in the states. It was the first one we got back in the Game Boy Advance days and it got me into the series immediately. Every FE game since then I compare to that one and it still stacks up as the best in my book. Love the characters, love the story, the lords are unique and easy to like … oh, and the sprite look is awesome, I love the battle animations. The music also constantly blows my mind.
A close second would be Path of Radiance for the Gamecube. Fantastic, immersive story, memorable characters, and very very fun. Radiant Dawn, the sequel, upped the story and the difficulty a lot, but it felt choppier and not as solidly executed in my opinion.
And then after those two would be this one. Granted, I haven't finished it, but so far it seems like a solid third in my book. Followed by Sacred Stones, then Radiant Dawn, and then Shadow Dragon remake.

Gee, thanks! I actually DID play through the Lyndis part of FE for GBA now that I think of it, still need to do the Eliwood part and Hector. I was thinking of going for Path of Radiance next, but I just need to find the dang game at a store or somewhere around here.
-
Genealogy of the Holy War is probably the FE game closest to Awakening in terms of mechanics, since they have the children feature and some random tile events. It's main problem is they don't point out any of it in the game itself, so you either have to know beforehand or use a guide to help you out.
And Blazing Sword is more strictly in the middle for FE games for me. Like I prefer it over Sacred Stones and Sword of Seals, but almost every game after 4 I would put it behind.
-
Wow they really dwarf your leveling speed after you 2nd class a few times.
I get like 5-10 xp right now for my main. Trying to get Pavis quick before I have my child and need to get 9 more levels to do so. Gonna be a lot of grinding to do to get there. And dang, to all those thinking of having Pavis skill, do that FIRST. General sucks as a class. Only 5 movement is a total bitch.
I know it being my avatars kid that they could get Pavis themselves, but I think I wanna pass that on so that they don't ahve to worry about going the General route
edit: As for my avatar, I'm wondering how many other classes I should reclass to or just finally finish off with Grandmaster. After I get Pavis, here will be my top 5 skills
1. Pavis
2. Astra
3. Swordfaire
4. Ignis
5. Rally SpectrumI don't have 4 or 5 yet, but with Grandmaster I will.
Or do you guys suggest different skills?
I have gotten skills for classes Tactician, Myrmidon, Swordmaster, and General. There are other great skills out there like obvious galeforce, aegis, lethality, ect But as I said in my post, holy shit does leveling slow down after you do a few classes. Thus not sure if I want to waste the time leveling them up.
-
Galeforce is fantastic and probably a bit broken. The skill combined with Olivia's dancing and aether allowed me to clear the final stage in a single turn on my last playthrough
-

Yea I kind of am thinking of passing on Galeforce for many of my characters just because I kind of want people to be a bit more unique.
I dont' want every character to have galeforce, aethor, ect.
-
It's not like any character can get galeforce since it's exclusive to a few female characters and their children. And aether can only be gained by Chrom and his daughters, so its even more rare
-

Didn't mean Aethor, meant Astra for swordsmaster
Well it's tough not to want to use the children, and due to parent skills transfering you can get most all of them either one of those skills if not both. Plus the children can get probably at least one of them on their own.
-
I assume this is concerning endgame stuff. Those who can become Great Lords can thrive by combining Rightful King with various skill based abilities. Lethality is probably affected the most by the 10% since it has the lowest proc rate. But Aether, Sol, Luna, Lethality, Astra, Aegis, Pavis, and Vengeance all shine the brightest when used along with Rightful King. I'm not a big fan of Vengeance or Aegis really, but the rest seem worth having even without Rightful King, and I frequently do, so Rightful King just makes them that much better. With Lucina I'll clear a spot for Galeforce too because it's so strong.
For everyone else, I tend to treat 4 abilities above all others. Galeforce (15 dark flier), Lifetaker (15 dark knight), Renewal (15 war cleric/war priest), and Sol (5 hero). Lifetaker, Renewal, and Sol all have a really strong habit of pulling units out of danger for me. I believe that every character should have at least one of the 3, if not more. The benefits of Galeforce are obvious. I mostly try to get the kids to inherit that ability and call it good with several of them having it. I don't really use Galeforce on any first generation characters for endgame, because they mostly get 2-3 great abilities and a bunch of crap, while a little planning can get all of the kids 5 great abilities. For Lissa I don't even bother with it, since I'm content to simply get her up to 15 War Cleric in order to pass on Renewal, and that way she can just keep healing throughout the game (my Owain started with Renewal and Aptitude, and thus a monster was born). Olivia's endgame value is as a Dancer, so getting Galeforce with her is really just for Inigo.
Beyond the ones mentioned, both myrmidon skills, both mercenary skills, and both dark mage skills are good. Locktouch needs to be on a few characters (I ultimately aim for 4 or 5, and usually use about half of them at any given time). Pass (15 assassin) can be very strong, especially when combined with Galeforce, as it allows a character to slip to the back, kill a defended unit, and return to safety. That's another combo I make sure to have available on 2 or 3 units (including the one who uses the boots). Rally skills can be great for support units, but it's unfortunate that Rally Spectrum is a Grandmaster thing. It's a great ability, but I wish it wasn't available only to the characters that can do practically anything at all. Finally, the strength/magic +5 skills are great for characters that stick to a single weapon, but I tend to prefer utility to a flat damage increase, even if it is good.
The best mob ability is probably Counter. That thing has ruined so many battles for me. The more of a powerhouse your unit fighting it is, the more he's going to screw himself when Counter procs. I've had guys one shot themselves (double attacks count) on that ability no less than 20 times. Counter! Astra! Noooooooo.
Leveling does slow down after a while, but that happens in every game ever. The biggest mistake I made was getting Donnel up to 5 Hero and changing him to Fighter (as a shortcut to get a 6th ability quickly so I could pass aptitude onto Owain and get him immediately). Leveling it was just as abysmally slow as a second advanced class, and almost all of his stats were capped immediately at level 1. With low caps and no growth, he was very average or worse during that time. It's quite depressing to have to work hard in order to get 10 levels and not really have anything to show for it. I'll be sure to avoid switching from an advanced class to a basic class ever again. Going through 2-3 basic classes first, though, is a quick and great way to get a character enough stats to be useful when he starts the longer advanced class grind. Especially for the kids who get acquired much later on in the game, I'll go through 1 or 2 second seals before using a master on them now (and Mercenary, Myrmidon, Dark Mage have abilities that can be useful for endgame, and you never want to have to go back for any of them). I tried using 3 second seals with Morgan to include the Tactician xp ability, but the 3rd seal (4th basic class) wound up being a lot more hassle than it was worth. Stat caps were very much in play from the beginning which limited growth, and leveling slowed down quite a bit from the 3rd basic class to the 4th, making it feel like a huge waste of time and probably making the first advanced class level slower (hard to tell exactly with the xp bonus). In retrospect, I shouldn't have bothered with probably Myrmidon, but she's amazing now anyway so it's fine. And she has Vantage in the bank in case I ever decide to use it, which is nice too.
-
I like how the Paralogues for the children are essentially the AI saying "fuck you".
Like Yarne's.
-
@Cyan:
I like how the Paralogues for the children are essentially the AI saying "fuck you".
Like Yarne's.
Yarne's isn't bad if you make his side the side you fight against, then it's pretty easy to lure him into your range. The real bastard one is Severa's, as she makes a blind charge for the one villager no matter what.
-
Keeping up with Severa wasn't too difficult for me since I put pretty much all of my fliers on her side of the map. What was difficult was that I didn't realize that she had to actually talk to the Villager guy to join the army, so I had to do the whole thing all over again.
-
Yarne is actually quite easy to pull out regardless of who you choose to fight. Just have Panne start close enough to reach him, and have her talk to him on the first turn. Then she can still pair up with him and he can bring her back to safety. I fought both sides together in normal, and even though I beat it I mostly did it by relying on two god units (donnel and nowi I think at the time) to kill everything on defense, and it was insane enough for me to know that I didn't want to attempt it in hard. I also never had any problem with Severa's because her route is so obvious. I find it easy to keep a couple of tanks ahead of her to soak up the combat.
The worst AI is that one moderately early paralogue in which you have to save the villagers that choose to run in the worst possible direction. Even when I know what they're going to do and fully prepare for it, I still find myself wishing they would go… I dunno.... towards the village? Really any direction that isn't the one they choose would be good.
-
Well, the easiest kids to recruit would be Brady an Gerome, as you start close enough to them to talk to them on the first turn so you can make them join you and pair them with a strong unit. Noire is ok too, if you are careful, because you can control her from the very start of the paralogue without having to talk to her. If Miriel is strong enough, Laurent is really easy to recruit as you just have to put Miriel as close as possible to the closest village so she can visit it as soon as possible and then you just have to pair Laurent with her.
-
Recruiting Yarne wasn't the issue. The problem was how the game threw about twenty generals and twenty more mage knights at you, and they have absurd accuracy.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I like how Cynthia uses the family treasure to cut fruit.
-
Seriously… Why is there so much pie in the supports? And I think Tharja raped my avatar when she was asleep. Not to mention that my Avatar think that Flavia want to marry her when Flavia only want to adopt her as her sister. And somehow, Brady got addicted to the soup my avatar created for him, and Inigo is depressed because both Brady and Gerome get girls more easily than him... Oh yeah, and apparently, Flavia have a small crush on Chrom and Basilio have a small crush on Lucina! Sometime, this game get really weird...
-
Wow Lucina came in overpowered this playthrough
When I got her at lvl 10 as she always comes, she came with all stats maxed but HP at 52, Mag at 15, Res at 14, and Def at 23.
Got def first level up so its max now, and since have only gotten 1 res, and a few HP points. Lot of nothings during levels. Very frustrating, but at same time what can you do.
-
Blah paralogue 18 is annoying.
-
I have officially decided to pair Vaike and Sully to create the BADDASS FAMILY! (even if Vaike isn't quite as baddass as he thinks he is!)
Anywho, does anyone have strategies for leveling Donnel? I was close to finishing Paralogue 6 (in Chapter 6) when the little fucker died on me right before finishing off the last three enemies. He's level 2.
-
Pairing him with Kellam gave him a nice defense boost. You can also grind on the free Marth DLC map.
-
It's time to pair up Chrom with Olivia, which I'm pretty sure they put in the game just because of how ridiculous the setup is.
-
I like to imagine Cordelia and Sumia meet up on that battlefield and have a mature conversation about their adoration for Chrom, shaking hands and telling each other good luck in their pursuits, after coming to a mutual understanding that they are both in love with him and want to become his bride.
Unaware that in the background, Chrom just tripped over Olivia and got a heart+ for support
-
I think it's even funnier that they have a generic village girl be his wife as a last resort. I wonder if that person even gets mentioned outside of the one chapter.
