Stephen? good to have you back putting in work again. Yeah, when you translate do you usually try to get as literal as possible or do you add your own kind of splash to translations?

I try to add my own touch. Translation is an art not a science, so having a fine-tuned sense of recognition may draw parallels to other quotes or phrases that may help illuminate the characters more than just a flat reading. I think it's really important to tap into those areas in which you can truly recognize the author's own personality, and the only way to bring that across is through the lens of the translator. With a plain literal translation that is something you just cannot and will not see.
Are you going to continue with this proyect?
Thanks for the reply and for all the work =)I'm waiting for something on my end to clear up before anything here can change. Within the next few months I will have a better explanation.

Hey Stephen.
During the post W7 arc chapter 439, Smoker says that they need something but I am not sure what. Some translations say that the need "ranks", "blood" or a group stronger than the straw hats.
I am more on the "group" stuff cause I don't think Smoker would be able to defeat the straw hats in the current storyline.
-
The scene you're referring to, Smoker needs "rank" or "position." Basically, his chase of Luffy is a personal goal/calling, and in doing so, although he feels he is pursuing justice in chasing down what he believes to be a great criminal, he is abandoning his actual job as dictated by his rank in the Marines (hence all of the scenes where he is telling the brass to "eat shit" and "don't tell me what to do" and so on). Therefore, if he wants to pursue Luffy without reprimand, he needs a higher rank and more autonomy, and he feels rushed because after Enies Lobby, Luffy now has a target on his back among the pirates due to the infamy he would represent to whoever captures/kills him. And Smoker wants to be the man to bring Luffy to justice, so he needs to hurry.

Hey Stephen sincere congratulations on getting the Shonen Jump Alpha job! I wish you the best and I am very glad the job is in such capable hands.

Wait, wait seriously?
Holy poopnuggets.
That's easily the smartest move Viz has ever made.
Full circle. Congrats Stephen. Never before would I ever even have considered buying an official English-language One Piece release.
I can't, unfortunately, since Viz apparently hates the rest of the world, but this is the kind of step that should've been taken six years ago.
When, ironically, it would've seemed absolutely surreal.
To summarize, awesome.

Thanks, guys (and to any well-wishers who post after this). As you can guess, I'll be taking down this section due to my involvement in Viz's One Piece manga. To be honest, I had some misgivings about creating this section in the first place, but at least now that I'm shutting it down, it's for the best possible reason. I know that a lot of people have found a great deal of use in those old text translations over the years and may miss them, but it's absolutely the right move for me to make. Hope you enjoy the finished product in Alpha (and eventually in book form)!
-
Congratulations, Stephen! They got the best possible person for the job.
Sucks for me though Thats what I get for not being American.
As I understand it, you will only translate newer volumes, right? Does this mean there won`t be anymore translations from you for the old chapters available anywhere?
-
Ahhh, I'm a little bummed that the translations are being taken down; it was definitely the one solid source I could always trust on to verify anything about the series I love.
But this is a bittersweet development at worst, and I want to just say congratulations on the new job! I will definitely be checking out Alpha now just because of your involvement! :D
-
My god, congratulations Stephen! You certainly deserve it! Thanks for all the work you've put into your translations up to now, and I do wish you the best of luck. =)
-
hmm, so does this mean Stephen is gonna be translating One Piece weekly for SJalpha?
if that's so, that is awesome! i know i will be checking it out. always loved your translations!
what chapter will these be starting at? i don't follow SJ, so not sure what Viz is up to yet (gonna assume whatever chapter its at in Japan at the time, then? from the look of the site)
are you involved in any chapters before that, too? (as in, the SJ print?)
im just excited because i always loved reading your translations every week and was disappointed when you stopped back then. but if i can read One Piece translated by you again from subbing to the SJalpha thing, then i wont hesitate!
-
The idea is that SJA will be two weeks behind WJ in Japan, so depending on what week in January it starts, it'll likely be around 650-655 somewheres? Remember they will be releasing "digital volumes" material to bridge the gap between the print edition and where SJA will start, and the first chapter to run in SJA will not be the first chapter I've translated for Viz.
-
wait im sorry but what is sja
-
Shut down your browser, put on a hardhat, then throw the computer out of the window.
-
Congratulations! This is most definitely well deserved and I am certain that you will do an excellent job - much looking forward to seeing your work! They've definitely got the right man for this.
-
From which volume will your translation be printed in?

Somebody needs to rename this thread, and include something to indicate that this is a thread to talk to Stephen and ask him questions about his translations/work… Not a Q&A thread about the whole forum...
-
lol I was wondering why these dumb posts were showing up in here! Thread renamed
-
Because practically everyone on these forums know you are awesome. Congrats on SJA.
We don't have to ask you questions, do we? <:3

Hey Stephen, for awhile I've been wondering about the idea of "curse words" in One Piece. The scanlations I typically look at usually have way more "minor swears" than Viz's localizations, saying "damn" instead of "rats", etc. As it seems like the earlier volumes of Viz have more swear words, I figure the scans were more accurate and Viz has been moving to "tone down" this sort of thing. Best example I can think of is that I'm pretty sure in one early chapter, where Nami ties Luffy up and hands him over to Buggy, she calls him an ass in Viz's original magazine and a jerk in the 3-in-1 Viz release. I know there's a lot of ambiguity in the translations, but I was wondering if you had any general thoughts on how "curse-laden" the series ought to be in English. Also, I was wondering if you've been given any sort of official policy by Viz in regards to this for your official translations.
And, this is sort of off-topic, but are you the Stephen Paul that translates Yotsuba for Yen Press?
-
I haven't had any discussions specifically about language standards with my editor. I'm not positive that there is an FCC-style "forbidden words" list, but at the very least, there's a general sense of what is and is not allowed for a series of this type. Personally, I'm of the opinion that One Piece rates a low PG-13. I think, particularly at this point in the story, you should be able to get away with, for example, "ass," but I don't think it really needs anything stronger than that. The tone is generally so geared toward fantasy rather than reality, and the depictions are so colorful, that it shouldn't have to utilize strong language. Now, if it's a political thriller full of real-world adults talking in a setting that seems realistic, sure, you could throw in the rated-R language we expect from real life. But One Piece is quite different. Obviously, I fully intend to follow any standards Viz sets up, and I know that I'm fully capable of making up for any loss of profanity-derived "impact" in other ways.
(Disclaimer: There are large swaths of Viz's release that I haven't read yet, so I'm coming from a position of ignorance, but I was under the impression that it had been heavily "toned down" at the beginning but not so much recently? If that was the case, I still don't have a huge problem with it on principle, given that the art and content of the early volumes make it seem much more child-friendly and less nuanced than the rest of the series that follows it.)
Also, yes! I helped them do a few of the early ADV-rerelease translations when they first picked up Yotsuba (vols 2-3 I think) and as of the latest one I'm on it full-time. Which of course, is mostly comprised of waiting…and waiting...and waiting...

Congratulations, stephan. I'm happy you got that job.
I'm still sad I'm not American, and I am forbiden to use money through the internet .-.
But its still good to see you translate One Piece oficially. I'm sure its a good choice on Viz's part. -
