@omae:
I'll second that. What an amazing battle that was. Granted compared to the later difficulty in the game it isn't much, but going back and playing that again and again is just remarkable.
Here's another, playing FF7 after its release and after many long hours of play, hearing the booming of One-Winged Angel as Sephiroth approached. EGM wrote in their review how remarkable the end boss music was and boy were they right. Square (or SE) has yet to replicate such a sound and overall feeling of awe and dread in a last boss battle since.
I hear you…I'm guilty of restarting GoW several times, just to play that fight. My favourite is the skele-Taurus though...but hell, all the boss fights (and finishers!) were epic. A shame there was so few...
And I second OWA; But facing off against Kefka, with Dancing Mads' final Tier starting to play was pretty epic too...as was the journey into Sin in FF X.
I also second the FF IX ending, which is possibly my most favourite ending in a game, ever.
Other Rpg scenes I'll never forget include:
The Golem scene, and Gaias' attack on Len in Grandia, and in the sequel: Finding out the pope is a mega-psycho (and the cause), and the scene with the heart of Valmar were pretty disturbing, as well as...was it Majek? His sacrifice on the moon.
Oh, and in Bof 4: The scene where you finally find the missing princess. I was like "...aww shiiiiit...."
Great platforming moments include The Kung Fu stages in Gex 2, and the final stages of Pandemonium 2...boy, they were great!
Also: "Torturing" enemies in Wild 9 for the first time, the Matrix-monkeys from Ape escape 2, and defeating Sigma in Megaman X3- the first game in the series that I played.
And a final thing: the "path of sorrow" stage in Klonoa 2. The music blew me away.
