sigh It was fun while it lasted.
He changed his name to Scourge, and plays a pretty big role. Had a whole arc, big climactic battle between the two, etc.
He's kind of a highly contested character, since he reminds people of Sonic fancharacters. I love him, personally. He's a great, crazy exaggeration of "90's badass" the way Sonic is still "90's cool" to this day. Plus Evil Sonic was pretty forgettable anyway, so at least now he stands out and means a damn.
Scourge is a getting a Sonic Universe arc after Silver. Heres the first cover:

Looking forward to that…! Sounds like an interesting "prison break" kind of story, and you just know his allies are going to be continuity porn.
Plus, fingers crossed the Zone Police element makes for an excuse to do more with the (Eggman) Nega plot thread.
I totally forgot about Sonic Universe. Only really heard about it when it was starting up.
I take it that it's solely for side stories set in the main archie-verse?
Kinda. Not sure if you read the main series, but there was a story arc, showing where Sonic and them got the fan to beat the Iron Queen. That was really the only ting that had a somewhat bigger importance to the main story as far as I remember.
But most of it's side stories, with some effect on the main story.
Oh and I'm guessing after the Scourge arc in Universe, we're getting a Mighty arc.
I totally forgot about Sonic Universe. Only really heard about it when it was starting up.

Kind-of. It's basically a series of short story arcs starring the comic's supporting cast. Last story was a fight over one of the Sol emeralds between 4 "teams" of characters (including the much-improved Team Dark), and currently it's following Silver's exploits in an alternate universe where Enerjak took over the world.
They don't greatly impact the main comic's plot, but they do affect the Archie Sonic universe in some way.
Thats kind of cool I guess.
I cant say I ever had much love for Scourge though. Theres cliches and everything but christ, they may have gone a bit too overboard with that one.
Did they…cut Scourge's "hair"?

Scourge's new look/style is much better than his previous carnation:
Leather + Sunglasses = EEEEEVVVIIIIILLLLLLLLL
Cause when I turned evil and look like the Fonz, I generally carry around a fucking spiked club around with me.

It works, though, because he still acts as an evil Sonic by being the dark version of Sonic's crazy 90's schtick, as I said before. That's why I really like him.
'Dose shades…
To be fair, Dave Manak was always a terrible artist. Even early on they had people waaay more capable than him, but he kept getting used for whatever reason. I guess he was fast?
Nowadays they've got kids who grew up on the comic and modeled their style after Spaz and have been drawing it for 15 years. Which is… pretty much how it should be.
I liked Manak's stuff when the book was still squarely in it's comedy phase. Once they swiched over to mimic SatAM (around #16 I think…it's been a while ^_^;;) he tried for a more "action-y" style with sharper edges and it never quite worked.
Looking back at most of the pre-Yardley stuff hurts, even some Spaz stuff.

Agreed on both fronts. When I first got all the comics and started reading them all, seeing Manak's stuff was always a bummer. It always felt like he got dragged into working on the comic and learned to draw Sonic by looking at a game sprite once.
And though I'm not terribly fond of Tracey Yardley's work (she's okay, but alot of times her stuff feels painfully underdetailed), Steven Butler's work is phenomenal. Seriously. I'd have his babies if I could.

Manak was quick and dirty. His cameo in #50 was easily his best work, and even THAT was dirty-looking.

I think the SatAM mimicking really took off with #30. The art-style started in the mid-teens, but 30 is where they started incorporating some of the SatAM stories (freeing Uncle Chuck, the eventual showdown against Robotnik, and of course, Lupe and the Wolf Pack).
Manak's style was more fitted to the earlier issues, like the syndicated Adventures of Sonic show. Spaziante and Art Mawhinney had a better handling of the SatAM style.

It always seemed to me like Yardley bases her style off of the Sonic Battle game for GBA. Butler is like a refined, awesome version of Yardley.
Yardley's a guy xD
I don't really like Butler's style as much. I think the bodys and eyes look a bit off. My favorites are Yardley, Bates and Peppers. Spaz is great too, but I haven't seen him do Sonic in a while besides the Archive covers. The hands looked a bit weird to me always, though. Though, on the Archives they look fine. Can'T wait to see his work on Genesis.
From the early works my least favorite artist was Penders. The bodys looked totally creepy.
Tracey yardley's a guy?! What an unfortunate name…
Never saw anything wrong with Butler's eyes or bodies. He does draw the characters older, but conisdering all the time that's passed I'd think that would be a must. Eyes always seemed normal...
The eyes don't always look bad, just sometimes kinda of weird. Maybe it's because the iris and stuff is so big.. Like here (From Issue 222):
!
The bodies often look too human like for me here from 222
!
In comparison to Bates issue 221:
!
But the thing I hate most about Butler's style is the way he draws Geoffery:

I think the infrequency is due to Spaz's higher-than-normal detail compared to other pencilers:

Agreed. The only decent drawing Penders ever did was the SatAM DVD cover. I have an autographed copy of Sonic #50 from him and Spaz.

The humanesque drawing style sorta fits in line with the story of how Mobians came to be evolved animals, but I totally see your point. The females are disturbingly well-endowed. I don't like it. On another note, Bates drew Sally's boots to be gigantic. They go up past her knees. WTF.
Doesn't these kinds of drawings encourage furries?
@Gerchak:
!
Oh, I totally forgot about the SA2 tie in. The art was beautiful.

Don't they all do that? I know Yardley draws the boots to her knees, too (SU 15):
!
Oh and about the bodies again: I have one of Monkey Kahn now, so there's also a male comparison ^^
Butler (222):

Yardley( SU 15):

I don't mind the more humanoid bodies, myself. Tends to come with the higher level of detail. Just look at Spaz's work.
As a more traditional artist myself, it tends to appeal to me more, personally.
@Sonic:

Furries encourage themselves.
Place your bets gents, gonna be somethin' special, or more of the same? Nice trailer though.
Somewhere between mediocre and terrible if sega continue their recent form.
Sonic Colors was great. I'm hoping this is at least almost that good.
Sonic colours was dime a dozen 16-bit era average platformer interspersed with lame-o-vision on rails 3d sections rolled up in a shiny package.
I would very much hope this new one is substantially better then that effort.
Somewhere between mediocre and terrible if sega continue their recent form.
Colors was actually pretty good, and Unleashed was fairly mediocre. Since 06 was just terrible, Sonic has just improved in the latest games according to me.
something about that trailer makes me feel slightly hopeful. not sure what it is, but i hope this isn't setting me up for bitter disappointment.

Only pretty good by sega's recent standards. If it had come out in the era of platformers (8-16bit), no one would have given it a second look. Sega still neither understand how to make a 3D sonic game, nor have the guts to make an unashamedly 2D flagship sonic game.
Not particularly impressed by this teaser but neither was I with the initial Colours teaser.
Classic Sonic looks fucking shite though.
EDIT: oh… hmmm.
!
lol, I hope the Kinect feature is that in certain sections you have to jog on the spot and pretend to be sonic to make him move.
This is embarrassing -_-;
This guy is goin crazy.
i…just....i don't know. where should i even begin...?
maybe the fact that he doesn't even understand what the word 'hentai' actually means.
"This is it, Sonic fans. We've fixed your number one complaint: Now Sonic is fat and has black eyes! We've tried fixing the things actually wrong with the game, but we feel this will be enough to make things right."
98% of Sonic fandom rejoices
The fact that they're teasing with pure pre-rendered CG instead of gameplay once again gives me no reason to be hopeful.
I'm also scared that 2 Sonics is an actual gameplay feature and not a cute title-screen only gag.
Maybe it'll be 2-D and have proper physics this time.
…wait. Wasn't Sonic 4 supposed to be the throw back old school homage 20th anniversary sort of thing?
Whenever they get around to a game where they're confident enough to show the actual gameplay footage in the first trailer is when I'll have some hope again. Otherwise its just perpetuating the cycle. Recent games being "not as bad" isn't the same as "excelling".
Maybe it'll be 2-D and have proper physics this time.
It apparently will have a mix of 2D and 3D stages.
@RobbyBevard:
…wait. Wasn't Sonic 4 supposed to be the throw back old school homage 20th anniversary sort of thing?
It was a throw back yes, but not in a 20th anniversary way. This one is said to have remakes of past stages if this is indeed the Sonic Generations game.
Remember, this is only a teaser trailer.
It apparently will have a mix of 2D and 3D stages.
So, automated rails where you have no control over the character for the 3-D portions, and then speed boosters through the 2-D portions?

Wasn't Sonic 4 a remake? All its stages were kinda… the same as old stages.
Remember, this is only a teaser trailer.
A tease would be some nice gameplay footage. Polished pre-rendered CG that doesn't represent the actual game at all is just starting the Sonic Cycle up again.
A teaser would be a video of sonic team reading physics guides.
@RobbyBevard:

Wasn't that the point for episode one? Aim a game at older gamers who may have lost touch with Sonic and model it on stuff their familiar with, get them hooked and change it up for episode two?
No, I think that was just their panicked response after the final version leaked.
I mean, it's pretty difficult to model a game after the best of the classics and mess up so bad.
conversely, it's pretty easy to just grab a load of old assets, touch them up, throw them in any which way but loose and tack on inferior gameplay to what you had fifteen years ago.
Oh yeah, I'm about to go "I lik the cassit Sonik" on your ass.
This game is going to be ass. Like the Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Sonic Colors, etc. because they're going to try too fucking hard. Watch.
Somewhere between mediocre and terrible if sega continue their recent form.
This.
This is embarrassing -_-;
This guy is goin crazy.
This is fucking gay.
The guy is a 25+ year old, virgin, furry, closet. Bet.

This guy is goin crazy.
Wow, I had to give up on that 20 seconds in, that was painful.
Modern Sonic… isn't all that different from original Sonic. He tweaked slowly over the course of the 2-D games, and then got a little lankier and green eyed when it went 3-D.
That's not even classic Sonic he's getting so excited about. "Classic" Sonic didn't have that quill set, he just had some awkward looking flat triangles down his backside. He didn't get the three dimensional spines until the bonus stages in Sonic 2, something the cartoons and comics didn't really notice till... much later.
Guys, why the fuck are you complaining? Sonic has black eyes, clearly everything bad with this franchised is fixed.
No Green eyes anymore, everything is fixed!!!
Well, I'm not very hyped or disappointed. This teaser doesn't even show any gameplay footage.
And I missed the Archie talk? Damn.
Colors was actually pretty good, and Unleashed was fairly mediocre. Since 06 was just terrible, Sonic has just improved in the latest games according to me.
That's kind of not saying much though…
@Monkey:
That's kind of not saying much though…
No, but it should mean that this game is better than Colors, if the pattern is followed. I'm speaking for myself of course.
Sonic needs to take a break for a while. The whole inherent issue underlying the Sonic franchise is 1) they have to keep pumping them out because that's what franchises do, and2) they go into every game thinking about the last one and trying to take this formula and worm it around, trying "something a lil different, or go back to something familiar!". It's like having a really shaky, old, 16th century wooden house and trying to make it a better house by shingling the roof, or examining it and going "well you know, what if we put a heater in it. Great house right?"
All that there really is to say anymore is that they just need to slow down and just put it away for a while. Not that it's ever gonna happen, lol
Sonic needs to be replaced.
Reviving Alex Kidd would be a start.
