Holy Hell must have read lots of hentai.
I didn't know that.

Kenshin is terribly mediocre in every sense. Art, plot, characters.
Trigun is a superior "former dangerous bad reputation guy who is now/actually nice and pacifistic' story.
Gantz is awful.
-
The Gantz author had lots of goofy commentary on things and at one point he talks about (after a chapter) his glorious invention of breast motion blurs, amongst other things in his sordid past.
like he has this giant jerkoff to his own hentai ideas in the middle of a gantz volume

Rurouni Kenshin is a sad series because the author didn't ever do anything he wanted to do and nothing came out right for him
It is just
Author Disappointment forever in its notes
He hade no backbone and a weak constitution
here is an example of each between chapter watsuki comment in rurouni kenshin
"thanks for the fan mail! But I also got lots of complaints… I really wanted to do something cool, but my editor said no..... I had a great idea, but opted for a weaker conclusion...... Nothing ever turns out right....."
Then he draws himself as a pig

Gunslinger Girl thoughts? Worth my time?
I have watched the first season of the anime and it was really good. The animation was awesome. The atmosphere was memorable. the ost is godly. The series is pretty dark and cruel.
However, I heard that season 2 animation went bad.
If you are interested, you can watch the anime version on Funimation's youtube channel.

i liked kenshin a lot when i was younger. the anime was (partially) bitchin'. but when i read through it a couple of years ago, i found myself more disappointed than i expected to be, for the reasons a lot of folks have stated.
that said, i don't dislike kenshin as a series.
saito fucking hajime is partially responsible
i'm fond of "retired, peaceful warrior" stories, and if nothing else, kenshin is iconic for it.

I really like watsuki as an author honestly. He has great ideas, but bad luck. Buso Renkin was so good
Not to mention he is just
… moe...
-
Well thank you for the feedback, I didn't think Gantz looked good anyway. Seemed as bad as Bleach, I just knew some people liked it but they aren't here right now. I will stay away. I do still plan on at least reading the Kyoto arc of Rurouni Kenshin and I was planning on reading Buso Renkin.
Which is better? Buso Renkin or Kenshin? Because I know most people here say Buso Renkin, but I believe Kenshin is more popular and my friend told me Kenshin was better. He only watched the anime which I don't believe got past the Kyoto arc.
I disagree about Kenshin having mediocre characters. I really like Kenshin and Sano and even Aoshi and Hajime. I think your right Watsuki is a good writer he just isn't allowed his full potential. Let's not forget that if I recall, Oda was an assistant to Watsuki before he did One Piece. I think it was Kenshin that they worked on.
-
I'm surprised Jump Editors are so strict given what many of the mangaka get away with. I think it was probably an issue of him not having the constitution to fight for his ideas though. I mean not looking at Oda's face melting depictions, you still have some risque stuff like small girls being cut in half in Bleach or Toriko's arm being blown to bits in battle.
-
IBut the novelty of this wears off soon once the author starts getting a little attached to certain characters and the story starts to amble.
Which is really sad because a great number of these characters aren't interesting.
-
@Kareem:
Which is better? Buso Renkin or Kenshin?
Buso Renkin was axed. I think this is enough fact for you to get wich one is better.
-
I've started to read a manga by the name "Pygmalio".
I totally recommend it, it got this 70s feel to it, with cute characters and big eyes, but it can be pretty grown up with cruel death scenes.
"Kurt, prince of a faraway kingdom, leaves home to find a way to heal his petrified goddess-mother. Battling numerous monsters, overcoming challenges set forth by Medusa's apostles, and helping other people all seem so heavy for a ten-year-old boy".
-
Buso Renkin is better.
Being canceled has no relevance.
-
Hey guys, Rave Master completed it's run. It's a good manga now for some reason.
-
@Holy:

Agreed. I really liked Buso Renkin.
Or maybe it was the catchy opening.
Hmmm…. that's probably what caught my attention. But the rest was really entertaining.

I grew up watching R Kenshin and I used to love it. I never checked out the manga though because I knew it would be a disappointment and that the nostalgia factor would not be enough to save it. However, recently I was stuck at a public library for a few hours and in their sparse manga section they had quite a bit of Kenshin - I read all of volumes 14 and 15 (because I knew this was around the best place in the anime) and I even bought volume 1 for a dollar in the used books bin. I enjoyed myself much more than I expected but if I am being honest it is only because I set the bar extremely low.

Watch Durarara!! !!!
-
Gantz is pretty much proof that seinen is not a bar for quality.
It's cheap porn, with a vague thematic.
-
Gantz used to be a fun read.
But lately it just plain sucks. It doesn't even get the gore and boobies right like it used to.
-
But lately it just plain sucks.
Tae is totally overused which is really annoying because lots of sub-plots weren't developped in a satisfying way. There were better things to do with the vampire for example.
-
I've owned the first two volumes of Gantz for at least a year (I won them in a manga lot auction on eBay). Still, haven't gotten around to reading em.
-

This. It started out pretty good but now it's simply awful.
-
Gantz started out terrible, it got a bit better with the vampires and when that asian dude masked himself as a black man, then it got bad again.
-
I can't stand Gantz's art and pace.
-
@Sonic:
when that asian dude masked himself as a black man, then it got bad again.
That was one of the stupidest things I've ever read.
-
Does that guy hate black people or something?….The author.
-
can someone recommend an anime to me. I was thinking about watching slam dunk. IDK though anything any1 can thing of would be much appreciated.
-
Gintama .
FLCL
-
Samurai Champloo ?
Short, nice animation, good thing to pass time.
-
If it's a popular title or on AS odds are I've seen it. So can we try to go a little outside the box? Maybe a little favorite of yours that's not really well know. For example I like this anime called Denno coil.
-
Favorites ? Let's see :
Dragon quest : dai no daiboken
Tekken chinmi
Tiger mask 2Yeah those we're my favorites long ago, oldies…
-
Black Lagoon OVA: Roberta's blood trail.
-
@JERK:
That was one of the stupidest things I've ever read.
Well, Gantz told him he should bring new players if he wanted to return. That was the only way to do it, and he disguised himself so that people wouldn't recognize him.
Does that guy hate black people or something?….The author.
There weren't many, and they weren't portray in such a bad way you'd think the author is racist or something.
!
This guy was kinda cool. He was a jobber though, like most of the members of his team. -
Izumi's whole motivation was retarded.
URHH I HAVE VAGUE MEMORIES OF RUNNING AROUND IN SPANDEX AND KILLING ALIENS, I BETTER TRY AND DO IT AGAIN
-
@JERK:

It was more than just vague memories. He saw Nishi's website, where he found a lot of information about Gantz. Without this website, he wouldn't have tried anything.

Hmm tiger mask seems like it would hold my interest I doubt I'd be able to find subs though. Thanks for putting those shows on my radar.

This is a completely retarded motivation for massacring people.

Are there any manga series where you can tell the author really hates black people? I'm sure there are given that Japan is nowhere near as PC as the U.S. I'm not one to cry "RACIST!" if I see a black person portrayed in a negative light in fiction, as long as it's not too insensitive and there's good black characters who balance that out.
For example, in Berserk one of my favorite series, I was a bit bothered that Donovan, the man who raped Guts when he was 8, was a black man but I doubt Kentaro Miura hates black people given that Pippin of the Band of the Hawks was portrayed positively. There's also some who think Casca was black, though I think she was more likely Kushan.
Anyway, I'm not black but I like to know how black people feel about the portrayal of black people in manga and other media which tends to be very stereotypical. So I just wanted to know what manga has the worst portrayal of black people and some examples of how bad.
BTW. Kushan in Berserk means Indian, for those of you who don't read Berserk. If you haven't read Berserk I highly suggest you do. Though the first two and a half volumes are nothing to scream about it gets interesting when they delve into Guts' backstory.

Darkie, here.
Japan is an extremely racist and sexist country. That's not really an assertion.
But it's born not so much from hatred as it is from incredible ignorance. I have friends who used to teach in Japan, and a couple who live there, and from what they tell me, many of their students and friends don't really have a frame of reference for understanding what constitutes as racially offensive - and black people are so absolutely positively rare in Japan that you really don't have to look like anyone in particular for people to ask you if you're Tiger Woods, or Denzel Washington, or someone else famous.
The stereotypes you see of Americans ALL over Japanese media - Being arrogant, sex-crazed, calling them "Japs" though most folks would never do that as in the race-conscious American culture it's a slur - it's born really out of a lack of context, if I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. So, while shit like the last game of Eyeshield 21 will really grind my gears from time to time, I try not to let it get under my skin.
They just don't have the frame of references we do - and if they do, they may not mean the same things. Just as we don't get all the crazy, wacky shit they do sometimes.
So I take it in stride.

You can also look at killer bee from naruto with the cornroll rapping and a goatee. However, I think you need to be able to draw the line between sterotypes/racism some where.
-
Killer Bee isn't racist.
Edit: Though some people seem to think he is. Idk, that seems silly to me. Killer Bee is one rapper in an entire village of black ninjas, where he is clearly and frequently stated to be an eccentric. If all they did at the Cloud village was spit phat beats then maybe it'd be something, but he's clearly got more to his story than just the fact that he raps, he's an important character to the story and probably one of the more awesome dudes in the manga. Plus, he fucked up Sasuke.
I mean, manga could use MORE Killer Bees.

I'm just saying the first if not one of the first black guys in Naruto just so happen to be this rapping conrowing having ninja. Seems suspect to me.

You're oversensitive.
What does it matter if he's the first or he's the last? He hasn't set the standard for the Cloud at all.
You're applying an American standard to a Japanese manga. In the US, maybe you'd want the first African-American to appear in a comic book to not be a gangster or a thug, but a lawyer or a businessman, because the US has had a history of negative and stereotypical portrayals of African-American characters in media. But to Japan, Killer Bee is just a character who happens to be black. Not "the first auspicious appearance of a person of color in Naruto gasp!" Try to see it from the other side.
Also, how is Japan supposed to see black people rapping as racist? Black people do rap. Do all black people rap? No. Do all the Cloud ninja rap? No. I really don't see the problem here.
Especially with how American rappers glorify the rap life style, how are people in other countries supposed to see that and think: "wow, they really don't want to be seen that way."

One I don't see it is as me being overly sensitive. Two I know all too well that black people rap. Three relax. Why doesn't he just play basketball deal drugs and be an ex-con and every other negative black stereotype there is. You can think you're being cool or that you're so stone wall that it doesn't get to you a bit. However, I am proud and I am also tired of seeing the negative black stereotypes played out in any form of media. You can be cool with it. That's you're right me on the other hand I grew tired of it. Yeah I'd much rather see the black businessman or the black lawyer. Instead of the same black stereo types that's constatly portartyed through out media. Let's not forget the black man that doesn't pay his child support. We should have him there. Actually I think I'ma write a manga it's going to be about a black man that's a struggling rapper trying to pay his child support so he has to sell drugs to get by. He's also an ex-con. I think I've covered all my basis. He loves some fried chicken and yeah he smokes weed also.
Also it's sad that's how japan sees us and other places I'm not just assuming Japan. We accept it and we're fine with it. Whatever floats your boat. I guess I am overly sensitive. I'll stop talking politics though don't want to get banned.
Then name of the manga is going to be "Another day in the life of a God damn boss." I'll tell you how it ends he gets shot and no1 can understand for the life of him why the good has to die so young and what did he ever do to die.
-
@JERK:
This is a completely retarded motivation for massacring people.
Well, it's Gantz, the average man is a guy who won't stir a finger when a bum's life is in danger and who, during the end of the world, regrets he will miss the next One Piece movie before making sure his relatives are OK.
Izumi is supposed to be a pure bastard even among those people, so I am not surprised at all he would kill people for his own interest. -
You shouldn
t search for a "first black character to appear" and then see which prejudices he fills out. You also doesn
t do that with white characters.
Nearly every character is overwritten in some way and if hes now black or white shouldn
t rly matter anymore..especially when we may can think that the author did it intentionally but can`t prove it.
You may find that offensive but you may should question yourself, how can then anyone draw\write about a black chara who is rapping?
Is it always offensive and showing off stereotypes..would it be rly better when he does sing opera? -

I'll make it simple. It's like this:
We live in the US. We see black stereotypes and struggles and issues every day, they are apart of our very cultural fabric.
They live in Japan. They see rappers and Denzel Washington and Obama. They haven't seen the civil rights movement, they haven't seen gang warfare, they haven't seen kids having kids or drug issues or any of the things nobody would know a whit about unless they were American. Step outside of yourself for a minute, man. When have you ever seen someone in Japan make a fried chicken or watermelon joke? - bet you you haven't. Their understanding of us doesn't run that deep. It's the same in most African countries. You can't get mad at THEM for that.
If I see black sterotypes in the US, then of course I'll get mad. But I bet Japanese people don't get mad at us for not understanding who the Ainu are, or what an Osakan accent is. You're mad at Killer Bee, but Killer Bee isn't something Americans made. You don't understand that.
and really, like I said: Killer Bee is not that bad. If every Cloud ninja was a "stereotypical" rapper, maybe it would be offensive. But he's not even that. He speaks in rhyme and has cornrows - that's it. He doesn't disrespect women or skip out on child support. I don't think Japan has the context to even make him do that.
Check out my last post and read it this time before you get all angry and leap to conclusions.

Brooke is black…right? And he is soulful. Oda, you racist prick!
