Whitebeard. Such an awe-inspiring character. Whitebeard was such an amazing presence in the manga, that even today I feel sad about his death. Oda struck gold when creating such an amazing character. Because I like him so much, I decided to write about his motivations as a character.
As we all know, what Whitebeard wanted the most in the world was family. I love how he knew how family and loyalty are more valuable than any gold in the world. However, it always struck me odd that his way of having a family was recruiting other pirates instead of having a normal family.
That's when I finally got it. Why Whitebeard was an outlaw and why we never heard of him having a wife to start a family. Edward Newgate was actually a homosexual. He became a pirate so he could be free of society's discrimination and he accomplished his wish of having a family, by recruiting other pirates. He became the strongest man in the world for the sake of his family.
Oda, I'm so proud of you. To think you made one of the most awesome characters in the manga a homosexual is indeed a grateful surprise.
