I'm pretty sure Captain Commando hasn't been Capcom's "pet" (I'm assuming you meant mascot) for almost two decades.
If anything Megaman has taken that position.
Strider's place in Capcom is always iffy due to licensing issues.

I'm not hung up on the previous cast as some people are. I've always loved Strider and Venom, but as long as they were replaced with equally awesome newbies i'd be fine. I've always wanted to see how some new faces would be in the series. With that said, I feel there have been some obvious new choices that Capcom has deliberately overlooked. The fact that we even HAVE a de-confirmed list is proof of them knowing what the fans are asking for.

This game sucks. Obviously controller-wise and if Tokirisan is speaking truth, which I'm starting to doubt, then it also sucks character roster-wise and I just might ACTUALLY stick with Marvel vs Capcom 2, which is what I was going to do in the first place.

.Talking about this, I prefer to use brand Megaman new characters [like Forte.exe or Roll.exe( for me, this Roll is better than Classic Roll or Legends Roll)] or from another series like Dead Rising or Dino Crisis.
