I know the deal with Luffy hasn't been explained, I'm just lost altogether with the chapter since I can't read it. ;-)
Hmm…yeah, I've never heard Luffy talk quite like that before. Well, at least we know Blueno's goin' down soon.
Chapter 387 "GEAR" Discussion

Wow . . . . . . . that's just awesomeness in ink. Leave it to Oda to have a "power-up" and not make it seem really cheesy. He wasn't all like, "MY angst and rage shall power me!! RAWWWRRR!!!!" No, he just kinda calmly goes, "okay, I need some more hitch in my giddy-up. 'scuse me for a moment." Classic. I hope he puts vulcanization into OP terms.
And yes, this can date back to when Crocodile insulted Luffy by saying how he didn't even know the full scope of his DF's powers. That line opened up a window of opportunity, considering all the chemical properties behind rubber. Now Oda has decided to capitalize on them.
reads the wikipedia article Oy . . . . anybody else think that the word "olmec" will show up in the future? And . . . . is Luffy gonna bust out some sulfur attacks now!?
-
i dunno…i think hes in prtty much of a rage right now.
For examples of Luffy in a rage see:
Luffy in Nami's map-making room.
Luffy VS Zoro.
Luffy VS Crocodile 1.
Luffy beating on Ener.
etc.You can even tell from the words he's using and his pauses. Luffy is cool, calm and collected and he knows his opponent has no chance.
-
How about "Hana-Gan"?
Haha…that's not exactly what I meant. XD Forget the theory that he merely aims with his nose….
-
Just needs saying again. This was amazing.
-
wow, is that luffy change the level of the gomu gomu fruit level 1 to gomu gomu fruit level 2?
ah .. again, just like dragon ball with the super saiya jin 1, 2, 3 and 4
and sure, zorro vs Baskerville will soon begin …
-
Hmm, I doubt it's as simple as the "super saiyan." And definitely not as lame.
-
Sometimes I really dislike Wikipedia, like in this instance. I apologize for this discourse, but it pushed some of my buttons as a chemist. I don't claim that OP ascribes to the tenets of science perfectly, but Oda usually has some sensical elements in there.
You can devulcanize rubber (it is not a irreversible process), it's just that the known processes that usually wind up deteriorating the sample. In order to sucessfully devulcanize a compound you need to break the sulfur bonds in the molecular structure. To my knowledge, there are 4 ways to do this currently. Extended exposure to high heat, mastication (high stress machine) seperation, bombardment with ultrasound, and bacterial dissolution. In my opinion (barring how Oda applies the theory) I believe that Luffy already behaves as a vulcanized object.
But as to the chapter, it was excellent. Oda blows my mind as to his orginality. Heck I can't even read japanese but this chapter is amazing! I await patiently on the edge of my seat for the translation! Heh, I'll probably be more amazed then. XD
-

The Franky Family said they'll take him on.
And how come everything gets related to DB when they get stronger? It's one thing if they start glowing, their eyes change color, their hair grows all mangey and they get wild…...coughs dryly in direction of Naruto....but Luffy pulling something that we know nothing about yet, (yes it could very well be vulcanization but who knows for certain?), shouldn't really be compared......not yet.
DB wasn't the first thing to have mad-crazy upgrades. Just the one best-recognized around the world.

Yay, a real chemist!
But do you agree that this power-up is related to vulcanization?
-
It's only a matter of time now until Spandam starts hammering that golden Phone Snail, especially if he sees Blueno get his ass handed to him by Luffy.
You know, it would be so awesome if it turned out that Aokiji's off-hand comment about Croc was what started Luffy down this road by making him remember what he had heard in Alabasta about the nature of Devil Fruit powers. I always thought that those lectures about developing your powers just went right over Luffy's head, but it's obvious that he's actually put quite a bit of thought into this recently.
Blueno is now completely and totally screwed, but, eh, I've been saying that about CP9 for, what? Months now? He had to resort to gimmicks before, but now even those aren't going to work. I just hope Lucci breaks a finger on the new improved Luffy.
-
If all this gear 2 stuff turns out to be something like dbz's super saiyan lvls im gonna be really disappointed…i was really impressed with how oda was able to create this manga without resorting to power levels or something like that.
-
There are raws up and a mostly completed trans elsewhere, which make it look like it isnt some silly DBZ style powerup. Its more of a move as it seemed that luffy built up power by compressing his legs then letting it move through his body somehow effecting him with steam marks. Vulcanization seems like a good candidate now. Other theories I've heard is that it has to do with ace/luffy brawls and more thoughts about vulcanization. The last one is that luffy did this by adjusting his density thus the compression which will make him faster but weaker.
-
Only a couple of people mentioned the Baskerville battle; we've been waiting a bit to see him taken down, too. I guess it was just sidestepped by the "Second Gear" transformation.
Expectations are going to be high for the next two weeks. I hope we will not be disappointed.
-

You mean Oda will make a reference to Legend of the Hidden Temple?! From Nickelodeon!?XD
Ah, God bless obscurity…

i really hope so….i REALLY hope so...

We have?
Personally, I kind of like the guy (or guys, as I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it's three guys in some kind of mechanical suit). He's just doing his job, which is to convict criminals; he doesn't seem particularly corrupt or evil like Spandam or Lucci.

Most of the One Piece villans are either loveable or obscenely vile; Baskerville is more of the former, yes, but like Wanze, I'm sure everyone wanted to get him out of the way. The same applies to the Impartial Jurors and the Hounbatai; interesting, yes, but merely fodder to the cannon that is the Strawhat strike force.
-
YEY! What was it I said from the start? :P Zanbai and his gang is gonna screw Baskervilles ass hard. Yehaw!
God damn, great chapter, Luffy is getting really scary now. I hope this is turning out as I predicted from the first Enies Loby chapter, Luffy is going to make a CP9 crash into the main building (Blueno :) ). And Spandam will call in Busters Call in some upcoming chapter, so they will have a deadline to keep, just to make this all more… Alabasta-like (much else has been more like Alabasta than any else arc, so...).

@omae:
HAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excuse me, I just had a brain diarrhea. Luffy ain't a Logia IS HE ^O^ Thank you. I'll leave that post up as my punishment for living.
I always had the feeling that Luffy was Logia too, but I thought it was said he's Paramecia. Can't quite remeber where though.
I always thought Logia is actually being an element, and there's no real reason we can't believe Oda won't consider rubber to be a basic elemental property. If you think about it; Crocodile is sand, Eneru is lightning, Ace is fire, Smoker is smoke, Luffy IS rubber. The other Paramecia we've seen don't become anything. They create something like Mr. 3's wax and Foxy's Noro Noro beams or they'll temporarily change their body in some way like Mr. 5 and his bomb body, Mr. 2 and his body change, and so forth.
The only difference is that the other Logia's are all normal human at some point when their weakness is found out, but they can always become the element at will so long as he weakness is absent. Aside from Luffy's weakness against sharp objects, we've never really seen the Rubber-human's natural weakness like we've seen water for Croc or Luffy for Eneru. Maybe that just puts Luffy a cut above the rest of the Logias.
-
I have an explanation for Logia types. In order to consider it a Logia type, it must agree with the following:
1. Able to produce
2. Able to control
3. Able to becomeLet's see Crocodile: He can produce sand, control sand, and become sand. Therefore, he is a Logia since it fits all three. The same thing goes for Eneru, he can produce electric, control electric, and become electric.
Luffy, on the other hand, can only become rubber. He cannot produce or control rubber, so he is Paramecia. Mr. 3, too, is a Paramecia, because he can only produce wax, not become one or control wax.
This is how I think Logia are classified. Any thoughts about it?
-
One of the most obvious characteristics for a Logia is their immunity to physical attacks. Luffy's only immune to blunt force to some degree.
Now that I think about it, Luffy powering up is much better than Luffy becoming enraged and gained "power becuz of love of NAKAMA yay!"
But I still want it explained.
-
I don't think Crocodile produces sand , but he certainly becomes it and controls it. Has Luffy ever really been around a huge amount of rubber to take control of it? Not that I know of. But he is rubber. If you punch him, it'll be like punching rubber just like puching Croc would be like punching sand (Provided you're not covered in water first)
Does it take some effort for Logia users to will their body to become the element? Possibly, but in that case it only makes Luffy look superior for having the state of mind of always being his element.
-
I went and got the chapter from EastBlue. Anyway, thanks. The color spead is nice. Well, it's an okey chapter. But I'm still worried, I don't like the direction this is heading. That felt like such a Deus ex Machina.
Edit: Sabre, if I were you I would check out the Semi's post on the last page.
-
@Cap'n:
I do like how Luffy looked for a method to become more powerful. It's crossed my mind several times that it wouldn't make sense if he'd magically be able to defeat everyone while maintaining the same level of strength. So now he's able to "surpass" himself to give himself a lot more power. I just have to say that I hope it isn't used too often.
if it is vulcanisation then it can't be reversed, the change will be permanant.
i'm wondering if you had the same complains during the Zoro vs Mr. 1 battle?
If all this gear 2 stuff turns out to be something like dbz's super saiyan lvls im gonna be really disappointed…i was really impressed with how oda was able to create this manga without resorting to power levels or something like that.
i kinda agree it's why i feel if he does power up, he can't power down, it needs to be a perma-thing or it just sucks.
Edit: Sabre, if I were you I would check out the Semi's post on the last page.
teaches me to reply as i go along :D
well looking at the drama you'd have to go to, it'd just be lame to have it reversed and would also warp a very good story, one piece is about growing as people not power upping.
-
This post is deleted!
-
fun chapter and this really is the perfect moment for not getting a translation. mumble mumble oh well at least enough info was given that i'm happy for the day =)
-
Good chapter, can't wait for next week's release!
-
i don't understand how people can seriously be "afraid" it becomes "dbz-ish". we're talking about op and oda! the upcoming chapters will be badass, that's all!
-
Good chapter except for the few parts that I couldn't read do to it being so blurry. I wish the tanks would come out faster.
Luffy went to 2nd Gear. Looks like another Dragonball homage.
-
Man, that came out of nowhere. Oda, you continue to amaze me even after all this time.
Prepare for an ass-whooping of a life-time, Blueno! XD
-
Why suddenly everyone bash DBZ as lame? DBZ indeed deals with superhuman battle and that's what the fans love about it (although it was way more lovable as original DB when Goku still needs Kintoun to fly around and only Kuririn has stocks of creative attacks, IMO). It's classic manga and as far as I remember, nothing else introduced such cool power-up transformation as cool as Super Saiya - in its era. Give it some credit.
I'll just wait patiently until it scanlated … which is still weeks later, waaahhhh >.<
-
I'm glad the whining about Luffy's new power was kept to a minimum, I don't feel like typing 87 pargraphs on why this is different and why it wouldn't conflict with Oda's style anyway.
So vulcanization is reversible. But I wonder. For one thing, it doesn't sound like a piece of cake to devulcanize. Would it be just a technique instead of a level up? If that's the case I hope it'll have a drawback because I don't see him going in and out of it every battle if he doesn't have to.
@omae:
"It's no use anymore…you can't even compare to me now..."
That was the only page I could understand. >=(

Well, if this power up does indeed relate to rubber vulcanization, then one major draw back (or advantage? depending on how you may look at it from a fighting point of view), since sulfur would presumably be involved, would be the awful stench (like rotten eggs) emanating from Luffy. This would fit with One Piece's style of humor. I could see Luffy maybe gagging from his own stench. Again, this would fit with One Piece's style of humor. I know that when I let out a really awful fart, and that fart smells like rotten eggs, I gag something awful.
-
I already stated.. I think Gomu Gomu no Mi is a logia fruit.. with borders.. nya, however ôo
-
Why suddenly everyone bash DBZ as lame?
It's not lame. It's just tired. DBZ defined the modern genre of action/adventure manga. And since 1984 there have been too many failed (and some successful) attempts at mimicking it. It's age doesn't make it lame though. Oda has always built upon themes and ideas that are reminiscent of what DB was, and yet he's never resorted to blatantly ripping anything off. I trust it will be no different this time.
I already stated.. I think Gomu Gomu no Mi is a logia fruit..
Oda has already stated… it is not.
-
That reminds me of something else. It was cool that Luffy didn't wait for the big battle to pull this kinda thing out, but isn't it only Blueno?
-
@omae:
Oda has already stated… it is not.
Oda has stated: eating 2 df would replace the first one…
um.. by the way.. anyone remember using gomu gomu no vulcan a few chapters ago?
-
Whoa, what? To clear things up:
1. "Gomu Gomu no volcano" (Gomu Gomu no Kasan in Japanese) was an average attack, like his Gomu Gomu no Axe or something. "Vulcanization" has no relation to volcanoes, and in Japanese, they're not even similarly pronounced.
2. Luffy only ate one fruit. The fruit Luffy ate, Gomu Gomu, was Paramecia, not Logia.
3. despite the belief that a second replaces the first, Oda had Lucci say that the body can't handle it. Oda stating otherwise can't actually be found.
-
That reminds me of something else. It was cool that Luffy didn't wait for the big battle to pull this kinda thing out, but isn't it only Blueno?
i think luffy was testing rokushiki there, he doesn't look like he could lose even without using second gear. the "you already can't follow me" says it all. i think he wants to try it a little before using it against "some" strong dude.
but if you still think it's only blueno, don't worry, sanji might come out and say to luffy he'll finish him (which shouldn't last more than 12 seconds coz blueno fighting again would be boring as hell)
with oda, we never know.
-

guh, wait a moment
1. Hint? I know it's hasn't got anything to do with vulcanization.
2. I give up, k?
3. guh? -
Just trying to help you in case you were confused.
It'll make a lot of sense if Blueno is just a guinea pig. But it seemed that Luffy was trying really hard in that fight. I'm sure he would have won, but not as easily as I thought he would.
-
guh?
this eating a second DF replaces the first one is one of the most notorious rumors in OnePiece, someone claims Oda said this but i looked in lots and lots of SBS and nothing. Since so far nobody was able to actually quote Oda i don't believe in this. Second, in one of the latest chapters when Kaku and Calipha were about to eat their DFs Lucci/Blueno explained that acording to GrandLine scientists if the same person eats two DFs it explodes leaving nothing behind.

So Mr. 5 is confirmed Logia then? Oda just didn't make him smart.
-
I've never wanted a translation more… This was so awesome. But I don't really think that Luffy has to change to "Gear 2" to defeat Blueno. He just wants to try it out, since he has no experience with it whatsoever.
-
Mr. 5 if a paramecia. The only logias so far are Smoker, Ace, Crocodile, Ener and Ao Kiji.
-
I don't think Logias can control their element. I don't remember seeing anything like that. And in that case, Smoker could use his cigar smoke for attacks and Crocodile could use the sand on Luffy, instead of them using their bodies.
-
Mr. 5 if a paramecia. The only logias so far are Smoker, Ace, Crocodile, Ener and Ao Kiji.
But he has all of the factors of a Logia. His body becomes said element, he makes said element. And if Oda made him smarter, I'm sure he could control said element. It's just that it is not a real element. More like a subelement, but he is still a logia in relation to it.
-
wohoo… such an amazing chapter!! Zoro is so cooll.... look at that hurricane that wipe out those soldiers <3 but, he still has that poor direction sense things are sure getting interesting ^^
and Luffy..... whoa.... he is soooo strong..... Blueno is going down..... but I really hope that Luffy's new move isn't his last move, I mean.... if that is already his top last move, then how can he face Lucci? :S but... I shall believe in Luffy ^^
ah, too bad there's no trans, no don't get me wrong, I understand the reason behind it ^_^ I just need to be patient.......
