@THC:
Some say this could really hurt the euro or even the global economy.
I'd say this is quite an understatement…
Politicians have embellished the truth about the debt crisis many times in media, and even Jean Claude Juncker now admits it. I can understand this in a sense they don't want to scare investors away, but voters in many countries including my own are getting pissed off because of this show, which is very understandable in case you happened to have some faith in politics. I personally don't believe we can avoid restructuring of the debt, no matter what ECB tries at this point, and based on my narrow experience I'd say many economists see debt restructuring as a necessity. (The Economist offers a quick glance on restructuring options and impacts for those who find themselves interested in topic.)
What comes to other European economies, yesterday Jean Claude Juncker also admitted that debt crisis might hit Italy and Belgium next. Which, needless to say, wouldn't be good. Plus we still have some concerns about Spain as well.
Things are getting interesting over here. Very interesting.

Hey y'all can I join this thread. I've always been interested in world history, culture and politics and I know a fair amount about it for a high schooler. I don't know if I'll be able to speak about it as eloquently as you guys, but I still want to be part of the discussion, it sounds like fun. So please:)

@Monkey:
Man oh man, I've found an awesome 24 part documentary on the Cold War, narrated by Kenneth Branagh to boot.
http://www.youtube.com/user/TheMac4010#g/c/1048C06D7B0FED58
This is some great stuff.
It's a criminal act that most American history classes stop after WW2, the Cold War has shaped the modern world more than anything.Booo, I was in the late 50s and they deleted it! I forgot the full name so I can't search elsewhere. What was it?

Dasia you really are my man you know that.

Thank s!

Long time no update!
Anyway seems like lots of the docs here are about strange exotic places far away that experience the savagery of violence and prejudice, not like cuddly ol' home in Western Europe and North America, no sir.So I felt it appropriate to post a documentary on Northern Ireland!
Now the Mid-Easterners, Eastern Europeans, Latinos, Asians and other posters can have a gander at the wild wild west!
http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/provos/ Also just for fun, the Michael Collins movie is up on youtube. Please watch too.
It's Ireland week!

Any docs about what the brits did to the Irish in the great Famine?
-
I tend to try to avoid documentaries on topics that don't have the awesome and powerful force of primary source audio/visual footage and actual living interviews, they tend to be far below modern topic docs in quality. And lots of them have retarded morons running around in period costumes while generic MEDEVIL music plays, and bad readings of old letters and stuff.
But I guess I could try to look for one.
The famine is basically the reason for America's huge Irish ancestory (though not mine). -

Does anyone seriously care? lol

LOL Smudger it's almost like I can literally hear you nervously shifting on your chair while saying that
Just kidding hahaFrist time hearing about anything happening between Ireland and britain during the time. Was there actually some conflict or do you mean the lack of help from Britain during the famine?

Due to the fact I don't like wikipedia most of the time, I decided to link you to this

Ireland wasn't independent in any real way at that point, so it was part of the UK proper, kind of like a well integrated colony.
Much earlier in the 1600's during that brief period where the Parliament killed the king and took power, their leader Oliver Cromwell engaged in a degree of ethnic cleansing among other things and pushed a lot of the Irish population westwards in Ireland, setting up better careers for newcomers in the eastern side (where Dublin is). He introduced potato farming as the main sustaining practice for the Irish population at the time, and it became more or less the only major food produced and eaten in Ireland in the centuries after.Flash forward to the mid-1800's and the poor majority of Irish basically lived around the potatoes they lived around farming. And as luck would have it….. a potato disease started spreading and destroying the crops. And boom, catastrophic famine.
The British didn't create it, didn't enjoy it, and didn't ignore it.
But they almost carelessly dithered about it like it wasn't as big of a deal as it was, and seemed more worried about market forces and bullshit that doesn't matter when people are dying en mass.Start watching this thing around 2:00.
Interesting side story. When European countries were giving kind of paltry aid to Ireland around the time, including Queen Victoria…...the Ottoman Sultan wanted to give a really rich bunch of food aid to Ireland. Victoria refused to let him because the amount he was giving was more than she had, and she didn't want to look bad in her own territories.
So the Sultan secretly sent a ship full of his aid to land on the beach in Ireland with no one on it, just the food.Later when Europe was giving Ataturk Turkey a hard time joining the League of Nations after WW1, Ireland stood in it's support because of this past act of kindness.

True story, my dad was in England abroad when he was in college in the 80's and visited Ireland to go see the hometown of his Irish half. Which was up near the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.
He and some friends were hiking in the woods near the road, and suddenly saw a huge line of armed special forces soldiers doing a huge dragnet over the hill toward them. They got stopped and questioned briefly, turns out the IRA had kidnapped a businessman for ransom and were hiding nearby. Not long after my dad and his friends moved on past the troops apparently a deadly gun battle happened when the troops discovered the IRA hideout in the woods.Fun times!

Several years ago, photograph Peter Menzel has carried out a certain project for his book Hungry Planet: What the World Eats. He took photos of families alongside their week's worth of groceries. Certainly, this is no statistical indicator or anything, and probably even differs from the real averages, but I still liked this. Quite an unexpected diversity.
Might be old, but I'm slow and received this link just this morning.
