Late Night Talk Shows
-
-
Which segment? The one with Robin Williams, or the second installment of the expensive sketches?
-
I was more talking about the Pee Wee Herman segment.
-
Well, tonight's it folks. Thankfully I'm finally caught up on missed episodes so I'll be along for the final ride.
-
Yep. Tonight is the big one. I hope Conan best in luck to find a new channel quick and fast when he can when September comes.
-
Verbatim what Leno said:
http://www.seattlepi.com/tvguide/414370_tvgif18.html
I believe this.
This is weird for the fact everyone's been blaming him [Leno].
-
Dear Internet,
Well, Conan certainly went out with a bang. Shame it ended so early, but Conan's Tonight Show was awesome while it lasted, and when he gets a new show, I'll be on it like Herpes on a whore.
-
That was the greatest ending to a show I've ever seen.
See ya in 6 months conan.
-
I'll miss you Coco.
I'll look foward to seeing you in September.
-
Conan's Speech at the end did made me cried. I turly really respect Cona for that. And he was really awesome on guitar. Now Craig Freguison gets my full attention now, since he is just as awesome as Conan.
-
I'll miss Coco :(
A few things from comic artists:

-
I was a bit disappointed with the ending, I was excepting ya know more of a personal Conan with all his buddies and stuff going through a montage of not only his time at the Tonight show but also his entire career with NBC and stuff but it's just sad to see him go. His little speech before Ferrel came in made up for the lackluster ending. Well hopefully Coco will find a new place. Go Coco!
-
I thought that was a totally awesome ending. Conan's really had class with this whole thing. And it's not the end of anything, only the end of a short stint on the Tonight Show. We'll see him again like 7 months from now.
Next up in Late Night Drama : What will happen to the ratings of the "new old Tonight Show"?
http://tvbythenumbers.com/Supposedly Conan could end up with near the numbers of what Jay got on his finale. His first finale…
-
Wow.
I feel awful, I basically grew up with Conan being my late night entertainment, even when I didn't understand all the pop culture jokes or political jokes at that time, but I still laughed at him because he was just funny all around.
Sadly, I hadn't seen many of his shows ever since he got the Tonight Show spot, yet I managed to see the last 2 shows and I'm still amazed that he hasn't lost his touch one bit.
Conan's speech was really something, he made a lot of good points. It even seemed like he was about to cry for a second there.
He sure loved his job.
-
Conan shall be missed
!
-
Now Craig Freguison gets my full attention now, since he is just as awesome as Conan.
I like Craig… And I don't. Watching him is like watching a train wreck. He seems TOO crazy.
Great finale, as touching as his Late Night departure... That happened a year ago. The recap showed that despite only lasting 7 months it had more memorable moments than one lasting a decade. I hoped for him to bring out all his characters for one last farewell, but oh well.
Speaking of which, did anyone else notice Triumph got his wish? His last segment (which was DAYS before this news broke) he told Conan they were moving back to New York, no wasn't an option.
Triumph, the Insult Psychic Dog.
-
I can imagine the very moment Fallon's face appeared after the show was over, and the ratings chart freakin nosediving.
-
Yeah, Fallon's still no better…
-
I kinda like Fallon, he's got a friendly kinda personal feel to his show. It's a nice style that I think's pretty enjoyable. And the jokes are pretty good. It's just most of the time he's following really good acts and usually ones that talked about the same things so he looks less good by comparison even if some parts of the monologue kinda fall flat.
Anyway, there'll still be news regarding what happens to the ratings with Jay Leno's return to the Tonight show, if that doesn't do well I dunno what the hell NBC's gonna do. Hopefully the Tonight Show won't end up collapsing or Conan's sacrifice will end up being in vain. He ended up leaving so the Tonight Show wouldn't be ruined by being moved to 12:05. It'll be interesting…
-
I disagree, Buuhan. Fallon's monologue is weak, no question, but the show itself is alright.
-

I for one have yet to understand what Conan had to lose by having the show move to that timeslot only ones who looked liked the big losers on that gamble were NBC and Leno.
-
It was to protect the dignity and tradition of the Tonight Show. There were probably other reasons, but that's the main one most people are aware of.

Basically this, now the Tonight Show remains the Tonight show, and it doesn't turn into Late Night.
Bye Conan  see you soon.
-
Good farewell. Bye, Conan. Hope to see you again soon somehow.
-
Well the idea is that the Jay Leno show followed closely by the Tonight Show didn't really work well in general. That it split the audience or the Jay Leno show was a bad lead-in and such, too. Plus then fewer people would watch the Tonight Show played later, a lotta people don't go to bed that late to watch it and things like that.
Incidentally, according to the ratings Conan did hugely well on his last show yesterday.
http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/01/23/conan-saves-his-best-ratings-for-last-tonight-show/39866 -
Keeping the episode on my DVR until he has a new show. We also have reruns now.
-
I hope Conan gets a new show soon, he deserves it.
-
Great finale. Great speech from Conan, and Freebird was a nice touch. We'll see you again Conan… in the year 2000.
(and some more opinions on the Leno situation. I've got nothing left to say myself, since its over and done, but I think these have some good insight to them. From aintitcool)
[hide]I don't understand these people who are obsessed with box office and Nielsen ratings. If the biggest moneymaker or most seen is always what you want then I'm sure your favorite food is 7-11 hot dogs. Don't you have any personal interests or tastes, or do you decide everything by popular vote and mathematical formula? It's not surprising if Leno (at some point) got higher ratings. Conan's version of the Tonight Show refused to compromise his comedic voice, and to me was really funny and charming because of that. Leno's was designed to be bland and middlebrow and to make dumb people feel smart by picking on other dumb people in that smarmy "Jay Walking" bullshit. Personally I don't think it's funny at all and he has always rubbed me the wrong way. That's fine if it's more popular (mostly, I suspect, among people who leave the TV on after the news - and who the fuck watches the local news, anyway?), but that doesn't make it better.
Which show is better is beside the point here, though. The reason why this situation is upsetting has more to do with honor. Conan sacrificed himself, putting his love of The Tonight Show name over his own career and dream job. He could've stayed as the host of the Tonight Show and let Leno still have a failed half hour show before him, but he wouldn't participate in using the name "The Tonight Show" for a show that comes on after midnight, so he became a conscientious objector. He's operating under a code of honor.
Leno on the other hand chose to go back on everything he's been saying publicly for 5 years… seeming to be classy first in his announcement that Conan was taking over, then in his final show and passing of the torch. He's also going along with NBC doing to Conan exactly what he publicly complained about them considering doing to him back when they almost dumped him for Letterman. They come to him and say "Hey Jay, we want to move the Tonight Show to 12 but Conan says it will destroy the franchise, so we're just gonna dump him and put you back in your old job that you pretended to retire from, okay?" And he says yes to that? He pretends like he had no option of saying, "uh, I feel a little uncomfortable with that."
It's just a case where one guy chooses to do the honorable thing, sacrificing himself, so of course you're gonna root against the scumbag weasel who just shrugs and takes all the benefits from it. Leno didn't instigate it, but a person with human dignity or any class at all would have to say no to that deal. He is a rat, he will have to live with that. He signed the "I am a rat" contract.[/hide]
[hide]Its all pretty much been said by now, but, nevertheless: 1) This is not about Conan's ratings and it was never about Conan's ratings. If Leno had succeeded at 10 pm, this talkback wouldn't exist. 2) Lets accept that Leno's scheduled "retirement" was indeed an unwanted retirement, and that he was just putting on a brave public face in pretending to be okay with it. After losing the Tonight Show he basically had 3 options: 1) go to 10 pm, b) go to ABC, c) actually retire. He chose 10 pm, and he failed. He could still have gone to another network after he was cancelled, or he could have retired in order to give Conan the same chance to succeed that he once was given. Instead, Leno chose to literally take Conan's job (make no mistake, performing at 11:35 was part of Conan's job. the show has been there for 60 years).
This is why Leno is absolutely at fault in this situation. Leno evidently regrets his decision to go along with the succession plan in 2004, but rather than take responsibility for his bad decision, he made Conan pay for it. Although it was NBC that set events into motion, it was Leno who facilitated the entire process. Leno and Leno alone had the power to grind the process to a halt by saying "no". As Vern said, he just shrugged his shoulders and said "yes". 3) Leno has said that he took the Tonight Show back in order keep his staff working.
That's absolute nonsense. Unless Leno plans on living forever, his show will end eventually, and his staff will move on. Every show ends, that's simply a fact of showbusiness. Will Leno show the same concern for his staff in 5 years when he's 65 and feeling worn out by 5 shows a week? My guess is, probably not.
Last night's finale was incredibly touching. Conan's comments about cynicism hit me right in the gut, and frankly, I'm still thinking about them today. But it was interesting to note that, amidst all the emotion, Conan managed to say some kind words about NBC, but said absolutely nothing about Leno. No, "look, Leno's a nice guy", no "Leno will do a great job again", nothing. Because Conan knows that Leno is truly the bad guy in this situation. NBC is a network, and throughout this process, they have behaved like a network. Networks care about profits; they make no claim to having integrity.
What NBC did was slimey, but it was no slimier than what they once tried to do to Leno himself. They didn't want to bet on Conan in a head-to-head fight at 11:30 with Leno on another network, and they were willing to fire Conan to avoid it. Leno is a different story. He's an amazingly wealthy and accomplished performer, and yet he was still willing to undercut a fellow performer who had paid his dues and never done anything to spite him.
The sheer callousness of that is astounding. I'd love nothing more than to see Letterman retire early so that he can give the Late Show to Conan, but it's more likely that he'll end up on Fox. I can't wait to see what he'll do next, because I know it'll be great. I know that, because people tend to get what they deserve. That goes for both Conan and Leno.[/hide]

I was unaware ingorant fanboy rants counted as "insight." I love how people expect Leno to quit his job because Conan quit his job, despite the fact that Conan quit for an unrelated reason, and thus Leno is supposed to just up and leave his job because people with boners for Conan O'Brien have their conspiracy theories and/or believe there's some kind of goofy sense of samurai honor in SHOWBUSINESS.
So, what, is no one allowed to host the Tonight Show after Conan? Is Leno forever barred from performing even remotely close to Conan's timeslot?! Friggin' idiots…
I mean, I love Conan as much as the next guy, but Jesus Christ, people.
Oh, and props to the "genius" who said ratings shouldn't matter. In television. I can only imagine the brilliant business sense that man/woman/hermaphrodite must have.
-
So this is over now? Man this sucks what they tried to pull on Conan. Lenos new show will have low ratings just like his last one after all this. Everyone is on Conans side for this. Its actually pretty cool. Loved the NBC bashing during the golden globes. :)
-
That last episode of The Tonight show with Conan was epic, right up there with his last episode on Late Night.
Hopefully he gets a new show on the air as soon as he possibly can, in September this year. With Andy, Max, and crew in tow.
-
So this is over now? Man this sucks what they tried to pull on Conan.
Conan had nothing to lose going with NBC's original plan, the most likely scenario would've involved Leno's show tanking again in the ratings, NBC's see's this Conan gets the 11:35 slot back,Leno like everyone wants (fanboys or otherwise) gets dropped from the network, life goes on.

Was the principle of the thing. If you worked somewhere for 10 or 15 years and the guy ahead of you retires and you get promoted but then he comes back and you get bumped back to where you were after all your hardwork wouldnt bother you? You clearly dont get it.
-
^ Actually I do I just don't see Conan as a victim in all this.
It's hard to sympathize with a guy losing a job when he chooses of his own accord to leave said job and is getting money for it. Do for sorry for his staff though.
-
NBC values Leno much more than Conan, unfortunately. That's why they let him go while they have Leno contractually obligated to stay. They'd can Conan before they'd can Leno.
Frankly, it's idiotic that one has to choose between the two of them like this in the first place, but since NBC is run by glorified chimpanzees, this idiotic crapstorm went down the way it did.
If there's anything to be learned from all this, besides "Jeff Zucker is incompotent," it's that everything has fanboys on the internet. Everything. Even late night talk shows have fanboys.

So you're suggesting he quit his job, and cause all his staff to lsoe their jobs as well, because of what's happening to someone else?!
-
Your missing the point. The staff is behind Conan. And he's leaving because of what THEYdid. Its not like he wants to leave or is doing it for no reason.
-
Actually, reportedly the only reason they dropped Conan instead of Leno is because Leno's contract would have made them have to pay more to get him out of his contract.
-

Doesn't change the fact you're essentially saying Leno should quit his job because apparently you think there's honor in showbusiness, of all things.
-

Well if that was the case they should've just let leno continue to tank. :getlost:

Not like NBC wasn't good for it.

That was the plan; he was expected to do poorly until summer reruns. However, what most people discussing this issue don't understand is how that was hurting the local affiliates, and they demanded NBC either cancel Leno's show, or do something to improve ratings.
-
Im with Coco. Best host ever on late night.
-
Well it seems Conan is sort of working with NBC again. Seems his production company is producing a legal drama:

Everything about Conan is drama. The man is less funny than Jughead Jones.
Leno at least makes me chuckle from time to time.

Your opinion. And 90% of America disagrees with you if not more.
-
More like 10%. There's a reason why the Tonight Show's ratings collapsed when Conan took over.
-
Yes, the old people loved their Leno. People who have taste watch Connan. Pretty much everyone is sided with Connan on this issue. If you actually think Leno was a funnier guy then Connan you probably werent allowed to stay up late enough to actually watch Connan.
-
The people who can tolerate Leno's brand of humor are not exactly people. More like mindless drones programmed to love the generic crap they're force-fed.
