Well there was that leaked Sega document that mentioned PS2 emulation for the PS3.

Sony could make the PS3 emulate PS2 games with simply downloadable software no problem by this point, but why develop such a program when PS2 software is still selling so well?
Oh. I didn't know hardware was so easy to reproduce without hardware.
-
Speaking of fixing issues: They're finally fixing the issue with their controller's D-Pad…except you have to buy a new controller. And it'll cost you more than a new game.
When the hell did controllers get so fucking expensive?
It's the new Play and Charge kit or some shit like that..
Personally, I'd rather spend 40 dollars on the sweet looking third party wired controller by Razer. It fixes the d-pad, adds 2 bumpers, has MFB layout and customizable tension on analog sticks.
-
Yeah, the new controllers only come in a Play'n'Charge bundle for $65.
I'd be interested if there was a wired version of said controller, but as it stands now, I'll stick with my SFIV Fightpad.

…And this is confirmed to be $40? Seriously?

PCs can emulate PS2 games. No reason a PS3, which kinda fades the line between game console and computer, can't.

The PS3 isn't a PC. That's reason enough at this point.

It's close enough. Heck, PS1 games run on emulation within the system. That proves all that needs proven

Pc's can do it because they are far more powerful. Doing it in software requires a lot of brute force power as forcing chips that were never meant to do a job to do so is not particularly efficient. which is why pcsx2 requires a fairly high spec pc.

It proves that the ps1 was ten years old when the ps3 came out and primitive enough to emulate.
It proves nothing about ps2.

I still say the removal of the PS2 hardware was a scapegoat and that it didn't cost much at all. Sony knew if they just dropped the price without taking something it'd make it look like they were just price gouging their system from the start, which would be a nasty that'd show back up during the release of their next system.
You've overestimating the power of the system in it's current form. Heck, I own the old style PS3's that can play the ps2 games. While mostly capable, some of the results have been… interesting to say the least.
Even with backwards compatibility in mind, they couldn't make it work perfectly. I doubt they can do better now with less than what they had to begin with. Much less.
-
You're all retarded.
You get a '+' next to your name on everyone's Friend's List.
That alone is worth any price.

So THAT'S what that symbol is. I kept looking for a new message or something that wasn't there….

The Dreamcast was capable of playing PlayStation games. Not exactly a taxing system to work with like the PS2.
-
So I just found out that the Tactics Ogre : Let Us Cling Together remake is getting an english localisation. T'was a great game which I used to play quite a bit back in the nineties(I have the psx version…which is itself a port). Looking forward to it.
Now if Last Ranker can manage that I'll be very happy.

Playstation turned 15 today. Let's celebrate by recalling our history with the brand.
Wrong day, man. Sept. 1 is PS' birthday. Sept. 9 is Dreamcast's.
Speaking of, seems jailbroken PS3s have the ability to play PS2 games and run NullDC, a Dreamcast emulator: http://www.segabits.com/?p=4014
-
You're wrong. PS1 debuted 9/9/95 in the US.
-
It was released in Dec 9th in Japan.
and Sept 29th in Europe
Nov 15th in Aus.
So yeah. Only turns 15 in one part of the world.
-
Whoops. My mistake. But yeah, both are celebrating a birthday today.
-
There's suppose to be free themes and PSone classics discounts on PSN today in celebration, I guess the store will update tonight like it does on Tuesdays. Wonder why they didn't just do it Tuesday?
-
Sony Hit and Miss thread, indeed.
-
Haven't played it online yet, but Castle Crashers local is just as fun as I remember it on the 360. Also, players don't need a separate PS3 User to play. Haven't checked to see if it my friend's data will show up should I decide to use his character or not. Also, haven't checked to see if they added in any of the DLC characters/weapons.

Any idea how long that sale will last…..if they do the sale?

No clue. Probably till this Tuesday, hopefully. If there's some classics I want I won't be able to pay for them till this weekend.
-
Store updated.
Suikoden PS1 for $2.99 and… a theme that consists of a black wallpaper with a 15 in the corner... wow. Are these gonna be daily? I wanna grab Suikoden, but I only have $2.70 in my wallet, and under $5 in my bank account, so guess I'm screwed.
-
3 bucks for Suikoden?
Guess what I'm downloading tonight~~~:D
-
Be nice if they'd release, oh say, Suikoden 2, which is by all accounts the best in the series.
But yeah, I've been meaning to get that, its impossible to argue with 3 bucks. I'll get that tonight.
-
I hope these are weekly, simply so I don't miss any good ones.
-
Well, I've never played a Suikoden game and for only 3 bucks…hell yeah I'll get it.
-
Sony just deputed a cool retrospective of the PlayStation line. It's quite awesome.
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/09/09/playstation-15-years-in-the-making/
Am I a nerd for getting giddy at .5 second inclusions of Folklore and Yakuza? I'm amazed they included them at all.

This'll be my first time playing it, but parts 3 and 5 are fantastic, and everyone says the first two are really good too… with part 2 being the best of the franchise.
Which might be why its 100$+ on ebay.
Part 4 is a turd, but everyone acknowledges that, too.
-
3 is poop.
Twisty poop on stick.
A lot of people like it but I can't stand it. It was like wrapping my intestines in clock tower gears.
4 was meh but not bleh.
5 was a lot of fun.
1 was OMFG I CAN'T BELIEVE SOMEONE MADE AN RPG THIS FUN THAT ISN'T SQUARE.
2 was OMFG I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY OUTDID THEMSELVES.
-
To be fair, part 3 also had an accompanying manga that fleshed things out a lot more.
But I enjoyed 3 a lot, as my first exposure to the franchise, to be sure.
What didn't you like about it Greg? The party/story jumping system? The overall plot? Did they screw up the gameplay? I havent played 1 or 2, so I can't compare them. (Well, I guess I'll be playing this weekend now)
-
I never played 3. But I had the manga which was pretty brilliant. Although it didn't showcase some of the stars very much.
2 is my fave. Easily my 2nd best game of all time right there. Also has Fitcher in. Fitcher pwns. (despite being nearly useless. He's just hilarious.)
1 was great too. I played it a few years after 2 after finding it pre-used. Played it last year too. I like the way it carried on and if you gave Humphrey the Windspun armour he just became invincible in 2.
4 was pretty lame. Can't say I cared about the chars in that at all.
5 was awesome. Nuff said XD
Tierkries was ok. Never got around to finishing it tho. I guess I just didn't have the interest to do so. I preferred it when it was all one world with chars from earlier games appearing in the later ones. Probably should get around to completing it tho.
But wow. Suiko 1 for $3? I wish we had that. Don't even have it on at all here.
Anyone who doesn't take advantage of that should have their fingers cut off.
-
I would take advantage of it.
…If I had a PS3.
...And if I had money. :( -
Did they screw up the gameplay?
Oh man oh man oh man.
I don't know how anyone could stomach running from place to place over and over and over and over and over again. Whee! I switched characters! Now I can do THE SAME EXACT SHIT ALL OVER AGAIN.
This was heightened by how you ran as fast as Hellen Keller with her legs bound.
And despite the speed the random encounters were INCREDIBLY high.
The game did one awesome thing and that was bring Yuber back in as a Clockwork Orangeish fellow. That was cool beans.
What I didn't get was the point of making Luc the huge villain. It was like….WHAT!? The quiet smart mouth is...THE MAIN VILLAIN!?
It's as if someone at Konami was like, "Hey, who is someone we could make into the main villain that would be surprising but have NO EMOTIONAL IMPACT WHATSOEVER?"
And Howard the Duck-people. I shall say no more.
-
Guess I'll grab Suikoden for $3 then. does so It will be going into the backlog, tho.
-
I'll have to agree with greg on all Suikoden matters that have been brought up on this page. Well, somewhat. I've only ever played 1, 2, and, 5. I watched a buddy of mine play 3 and that turned me off to it (although maybe a big part was me watching it get played… hmmm.) 5 was actually a LOT of fun to play and pretty deep.
I have suikoden on disc... but you know I cannot resist putting the classic RPGs on my psp.
-
I think I'll be dead and still clutching my PS1 Suikoden 1 + 2 discs. I love them so much.
It was such a shame they didn't release the 1 + 2 combo set on the PSP like they did in Japan.
I want to play 3. Even if it does get hate. Simply so I can say I played em all that were translated. Oh and that Tactics one too. (No way would I be able to play the Gaiden ones or whatever they were called. With Nash.)
-
Got my PSP~
Never had I bought a backlog along with the system itself.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
MediEvil: Resurrection
Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
Valkyria Chronicles II

Seems like GameStop's giving out free copies of God of War III to those who buy a "Sony refurbished" PS3 (40GB, 80GB and up). That…actually sounds like a sweet deal.
-
I wouldn't trust a "refurbished" PS3 personally.
Heck, I don't really trust "refurbished" consoles period.
-
-
Well depending on who refurbished it you can very likely wind up with a system that's not fully working like a RRODed or an online disabled 360.
-
Buying a refurbished console is like buying a certified used car. Basically, the company checks out all common points of failure, ensures that they are in good working order, replaces anything that is broken or borderline (really), and then cleans everything up real nice so that it looks new. Whether or not it's worthwhile depends on how much you trust the company doing the "certifying."
Personally, although I do not like GameStop because they overprice everything, I do trust their refurbs. I bought a refurbished Game Cube from them and have never experienced any problems with it. It still comes out from time to time for a round of Mario Party. The question, though, is how much of a discount they give you on a PS3, I would bet that it's not very much. God of War III has already dropped to half price from online sources, so it's not much of a toss in really.
I find it highly doubtful that an outfit like Gamestop would ever sell a online disabled 360 as a refurb. If it somehow happened I have no doubts that they would exchange it.
-
Funny story - one of my best friends bought his PS3 refurbished from Gamestop, and it turned out to be banned online. GS was pretty good about it, though, and gave him a full refund. He ended up buying one new.
-
Bought a refurbed PSP.
Awful.
Bought a used one.
Crap.
Bought one brand new.
Brilliant.
I had nothing against refurbs… till I bought one. Sticking to games for my used purchases.
-
I bought a brand new PS3 Slim. I had heard about the refurbished ones, but I felt really uneasy about buying them. At any rate, although it's still only a few months old, my new one works great aside from the fact it makes this clicking noise when I use it, which, I've heard, is due to the heat expanding the plastic.
-

So THAT'S what the hell that sound is I often hear coming from TVs and other electronics out of nowhere. o_O
