wow… just saw the tv spot on G4 today. Live action actor as Samus walking past memories of Space Pirates melting (via plasma beam?), meeting the baby metroid, and watching the baby blasted by Dino Mother Brain = best commercial for a Nintendo game I've seen in a while. Maybe the best, if you don't count the so-cheesy-they're-good NES ads from the 80s.
Metroid: Other M
-
-
Best nintendo ad since N64 Smash Bros!
-
Nintendo a lot slicker then they used to be.
S6WWUgQMCI8
Metroid M sounding good.

I remember that commercial pissing off certain feminist individuals of the fanbase/population.
-
eh. i'm not bothered by it.
-
So….this game got leaked and there's tons of complaints (lol) but here's something that someone who is at the end of the game wrote (they are writing a full review soon, this has no spoilers):
Now that I've played this much, I can safely say this is the worst Metroid game outside of Hunters. Here's the rundown:
- Coming from Team Ninja and their fancy-pants combat in Ninja Gaiden the combat here feels incredibly stale and repetitive. Simply mash the D-Pad around and hold/press fire. Outside of boss battles regular combat is really, really generic. Fancy looking but nothing else. I mean I don't expect Metroid to have a combat system outside of "shoot" but I mean c'mon, if you're gonna put so much emphasis on this fancy combat, at least make it more varied.
- For a game that emphasizes on plot it really seems to have a crappy storyline. I mean it seriously feels like a big Metal Gear Solid 2 rip off with less gameplay, less cutscenes, and no batshit crazy plot twists that kept you involved. Also no scene where you have to evade guards while nude. I wouldn't mind that with Samus
- I mean it's still fairly Metroid in terms of exploration though and that's probably what it has going the most for it. There's a lot of stuff to backtrack for in terms of missile/tank/charge upgrades.
- Am I the only one who thinks it's incredibly stupid that you have the weapons all along but you need fucking Adam's permission to use them? I'm sorry, if I'm getting fried in a fucking lava pit I don't think Adam will care if I put on the Varia upgrade. It's not like it can hurt anyway either. I mean in the end it's just a substitute for finding the stuff in like Metroid Prime and Super Metroid and whatever but it feels like a weak presentation hole.
- For being, what, the first Metroid game to have major amounts of dialogue, you'd think they'd get better voice actors? I mean the voices sound good but the delivery is bland and lifeless.
- The cutscenes aren't delivered all too well. It's just like "WOAH RANDOM IRRELEVANT FLASHBACK THAT REALLY DOESN'T HAVE A WHOLE LOT TO DO WITH THE STORY" and Samus always talks to HER FUCKING SELF. Seriously, at least talk to Adam or something, I hate how she's constantly narrating.
- Controls, controls, controls. I mean I don't know what they were thinking when they went with using the Wiimote alone. I mean there's absolutely no reason to not use Wiimote/Nunchuck. Analog sticks make for better navigation in the 3D world, you don't have to constantly flop the Wiimote around to aim at the screen for first person mode, and anything that was unique to the single Wiimote mode can be mapped to a button (such as Concentration and first person mode). The controls aren't broken but it pisses you off inside when you, an average dude with no experience in making games, knows that he could make a better control scheme for the game than the vets.
Odds are I'll play it to the end but I won't say it was a great game. Full review will be coming sometime soon.
Top 3 complaints in order:
1: Controls (many feel the controls make the game difficult and boring to play)
2: Voice Acting (many feel the dialogue is off and the acting is dry)
3: Music (many compare the music to ambient sounds)I doubt it'll work great but I'm downloading it right now to test it out.
-
Metal Gear Solid 2 ripoff with less gameplay and cut-scenes?
Now It's been a while. But wasn't that like 6 hours or so tops?
So what? This game is about 4 hours long? ;-; laaame.

Video review: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/review-metroid-other/703717
Other sites are claiming mostly the same as Gametrailers' review. Great Metroid game gameplay-wise, dragged down a bit by ridiculous story bits/cutscenes.
-
Yeah, I was kinda worried about Other M being more plot-heavy. Remember that interview with Miyamoto about him deliberately having no plot for Mario games?
Follow your own advice buddy.
Oh well, I won't pass full judgment until I play it for myself.
-
I still see myself enjoying OM very much. Being a solid title like Metroid Fusion gameplay-wise will be the most important aspect for me, even if it has shitty cutscenes.
I mean, it's a video game. I still consider Resident Evil Remake and Resident Evil 4 to be among the best games of last generation (for example), even though they require watching absolutely shit-tastic plots and cringeworthy dialogue. -
Yeah, I have a feeling I'll probably like it (heck, I might even love it) but it's too bad we're not getting another Super Metroid or Metroid Prime. Oh well, they can't all be masterpieces. If it's even around the same quality as Echoes I'll be happy.

To be fair, Metriod has always been one of the more "mature" Nintendo franchises so I think they can get away with a little more plot and story telling than in something like Zelda or Mario, which for the most part are straightforward adventures (Ganon returns, Peach is captured, etcetera etcetera…)
Though all the comments about the game containing MGS2-like levels of exposition is a bit troubling...
As for the controls, I doubt I'll have any issues with them, I've always preferred pads to analog sticks depending on the situation.

Add onto that with the fact that Samus always had a much more serious and dark back story compared to most/all of Nintendo's heroes.
-
As expected from Team Ninja.
-
i may change my mind once i play it, but i've had this bad feeling all along, from trying to add and build on something that didn't need it. less is definatly more.
-
As expected from Team Ninja.
Just to clarify, this isn't the same team from previous games. Team Ninja is now just a name; a shell of what it used to be. This is due to the fact that the key members of the group have all left. Similar to Sonic Team.
Also, seems Game Informer gave the game a 6.25. Guess Nintendo didn't pay them off for a good review like all other publishers. Honestly, there have been broken games with worse stories that have gotten much higher reviews by GI. It really makes me believe their good reviews are bought off.
-
So, the game sucks? Generally and statically speaking, of course.
I didn't expect a 9.0 or 8.5 for that matter, but 7.0 and lower sounds too harsh.. Max 8.0
Although the voice acting is tremendously horrible.
-
Everyone else has given the game around 8.5.
G4 and Game Informer are the only two idiots that gave the game less favorable scores. Just kinda goes to show they're the cancer of gaming journalism.

How long was this? Since Ninja Gaiden 2? Because if so, that game sucked. The scenes look pretty but but script and directing were downright cliche and terrible. If this game has any of that, then I could see where the bad rep is coming from.
I'd have to agree about reviewers being paid off these days, as most writers never seem as if they have much ambition with certian genres like back then. It's like another form of advertising more than anything. Saying that, I'd still give the game a try and form my own opinion.

I suppose it would make more sense if I didn't use image compression, however, if you still don't believe me I might be able to upload a higher quality picture.

Nice. Since you know a lot about the whole gaming on PC/hacking console games for PC shit, would you know where I can get a nice, not too expensive monitor to play my 360 on..?
My HDTV is fine and all, but getting too close to it makes the image all washy, blurry and jagged, I'd love to play on a Monitor.

That's the one I have….which is kinda expensive.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824176126
279 is actually pretty good for a 25 inch HD monitor. It also has 66 ratings with an average of 5 out of 5 stars. For the money, this is actually a lot better than the one I have.
-
The one w/ the lower price sounds good.. Do I need to know a lot about this shit if I just wanna hook up my 360 to the Monitor? I assume you just need to connect the HDMI cable from the 360 to the monitor's socket, and presto.
Is the quality significantly better on the monitor than the TV?
-
It depends. I got an Acer monitor to play games on and it looks really damned crisp with the HDMI cable. The problem was the shitty sound quality from the built in speakers. From there, I switched to DVI to an HD box(quality dropped).
I may upgrade to that one whenever I get a decent income going.
-
I'll admit that I'm a little bit hesitant about picking this game up after reading about the complaints in the reviews, especially the bogged down story. Gameplay-wise, I doubt I'll like it as much as the Prime trilogy, but they still managed to include a lot of elements that make Metroid, Metroid. Rental first is probably the best bet for me.

Seeing as G4 was pretty much standing out, I was kind of curious and read it. Their ,,review" is pretty much an odd rant about sexism in video games and about how Samus doesn't fit the reviewers image of her before this game…
Reading NeoGAF, it turns out that the same girl reviewing this was blustering about how awful Mario Galaxy 2 is due to the lack of a mature storyline, so whatever... -

HDMI cable to monitor. You might want external speakers, though, because the built-in volume on all monitors isn't that great.
It all depends on the TV you have. While the contrast ratio on my monitor (60,000:1) is lower than the contrast ratio on my tv and projector the refresh rate is a lot higher and makes the games appear a lot more smoothly.

Seriously, this is one awful review (not to mention unprofessional…). There's another video where she tries to explain herself which I couldn't even bear a minute. For the written review
http://g4tv.com/games/wii/61992/Metroid-Other-M/review/and a video follow up
http://g4tv.com/videos/48335/Talkabout-Metroid-Other-M/I can see where there coming from you have bad voice acting in a bad story with bad controls they were just harsher on it then others, besides a 2 of 5 is the equivalent of a 4 or 5 out of ten. My problem with the game is you know how in metroid you use new powers you gain to backtrack to old areas and get expansions or upgrades, you cant do that in this game until after the end credits.

I don't know where you've read that, but OM will have all of that. From what I understand it's more of a Metroid Fusion 2, meaning that the main quest is often obvious and straightforward but there is still backtracking, hidden items, Samus getting stronger through the game, etc. etc.
(Or reviews and first impressions are all lying, lol..) -
It works on a A to B path, you start at point A and to to continue the game you have to get to point B. Say at point B you are allowed to use a upgrade to get to point C but there was a expansion you can now get in between point A and point B using the upgrade. You have to hope the game lets you go back to get the item or go through the area again at a later time. Compared to the prime series where at any point you could go anywhere you wanted along as you had the right upgrade or fusion where right before the end game you can backtrack through the entire game to collect items in other M you have to wait till the end of the game before you can fully explore the ship.
-
hmm. read the review. she does lay it down rather thick. though I think she has a point. I can't say for sure until I see for myself, but this is what i've been afraid of from the beginning. I knew if they tried to add story and give samus more character it would turn bad. I liked in the past that you didn't need to know much. she was just a strong bad ass character off to save the galaxy. do we need to know mario's inner thoughts and how he misses his wife and children. no. I liked it when Samus could show she could hold her own like one of the guys.
guhh, sorry. i'm sounding just like that reviewer now. I'm just dissapointed
-
Yeah, I can see cutscenes and story being unnecessary as a valid complaint, which is mentioned in most reviews anyway - thus getting mostly scores around 8.5 rather than 9s, but that girls complaints are way over the top. She hardly gives any reasons why the game itself is supposed to be that awful and rather keeps accusing the story being sexist and insulting, etc. throughout (with reasons given that make absolutely no sense).
Also this isn't new either, Fusion already had Samus talking very much, including plenty of inner monologues. Plus, not to forget that there was the manga building up Samus' as a more emotional character too.
At least this time, cutscenes will be skippable which should make speed- and 100%runs more enjoyable than Fusion, I guess… -
Actually you can't skip cutscenes unless you die, then any cutscenes you've seen since the last checkpoint you can skip but if you reload a save you have to watch the scene again. But in total there's about 2 hours of cutscenes spread out through the game usually no longer then 10 or 20 minutes.
-
Right, I meant you'll at least only watch them on your first playthrough, unlike Fusion which made you rewatch/read all the conversations on every replay, which was unnecessarily tedious in a series that encourages one for speed runs.

X-Play's Other M review had to be the most unprofessional and wacked-out game review I have ever seen. G4's little outfit never was a reliable go-to for game reviews, but this was the final nail in that coffin.
I can't say I've ever seen a video game review I thought was pathetic up until this point. Jesus…
-
G4 stopped being reliable when they absorbed TechTV and killed off everything from both sides. It's obvious as hell that Morgan "Man Jaw" Webb and Olivia Munn are just there for the whole "sex appeal" thing and don't know shit about video games.
Especially with Morgan's whole verbal bashing of the Mario series and it being "too kiddy."
I miss when G4 had GOOD shows, like Icons.
-
Olivia Munn's actually smoking hot, though. Morgan Webb is just… fucking weird-looking and unattractive.
But yeah, Munn or no Munn, G4 sucks ass now. I remember when it was actually ABOUT videogames, not 3-hour reruns of Cops, Cheaters and shitty Ninja game shows.

Definite Keeper For anyone who is still considering getting this game or for anyone wondering if it is worth it, I would just like to say to get off your ass and go pick this game up.
I am loving every second of this game. I am not a die-hard Metroid fan but I have played and beaten every one released from the beginning. This game is a good break from the past few FPS Metroid titles we have been starting to get use to.
Other M takes the game back to it's roots and is actually an immediate continuation of Super Metroid (the game starts at the scene of Mother Brain destroying the Baby Metroid).
This game really focuses on the story, sometimes you may feel that the story is more important than the game itself but it all blends rather well in the end as there is much dialog and and emotion poured into the story. The game also gives us some info on Samus before she was a Bounty Hunter and was a soldier for the Galactic Federation.
The graphics are really good for a Wii title and the controls are not too bad. One gripe I have is that although you can enter First Person mode and shoot your beams and rockets this way, you cannot move while engaged in this view, which during heated battles that require you to fire a missile (or super missile) to a specific spot on the enemy or boss…it becomes clunky and difficult but it gets better as you get use to the game.
I am pretty far in the game, almost completing it and I must say that there were some areas where I was completely stumped on where to go or what to do as there are a fair share of puzzles and easily missed hidden areas. The map system tells you where you need to go but nothing tells you how to get there. Sometimes the rooms and hallways look the same which makes it easy for you to miss that little open vent in the beginning, middle, or end of the hallway that you need to enter as a Morph Ball so you can continue to the next area because you don't know how the hell to get Authorization for the Super Missile or Power Bomb for that door that is conveniently standing in the way.
In this game, Samus pretty much has all her weapons and items but they are unusable until "Authorized"....which, boiling it down simply, is attained when there is no apparent place you can go without using xxxx beam or upgrade.
The battles are fun, the boss battles are epic and the story is pretty decent. I enjoyed Samus talking alot and showing her emotions.
If you love, like, or enjoy the Metroid series, then by all means give this game a shot, despite the mix reviews that have been floating around.
-
Actually, the reviews have been largely positive. Only X-Play and Game Informer have given it negative reviews.

well i should be getting it tomorrow in the mail, but i'm excited. i started playing metroid prime trilogy again in preparation. btw metroid prime trilogy best game case ever, also amazing 3 games on one disk
but yea i'm guessing my only complaint will be controls. I mean wtf, why not use numchuck and wand together like prime. Just don't aim the pointer at the screen when in 3d mode and when first person mode just aim at screen and use prime controls. seems easy.
but whatever, i'm excited for this. i'm not a huge fps fan and more of an adventure game fan so this game seems much more in my alley than prime games and i love those. only downside is, that i heard it isn't that long of a game.
also going to be weird having cutscenes, nintendo games aren't big on having final fantasy like cutscenes.
-
Game Informer has been sucky too. I remember there was a time when there were different people that had a love for particular genre, and would review games in that genre. Now? It's not as diverse.
-
Picking it up tomorrow.
Thanks for the nice review Sage! I always doubt the doubters until I can see for myself.

Super Duper Metroid 64 Wii
well i should be getting it tomorrow in the mail,
but i'm excited. i started playing metroid prime trilogy again in preparation. Not to burst your bubble because I do the same thing with games and movies but the Prime series is not connected to this game. As mentioned above, it literally is a straight continuation of Super Metroid (which to me is jizz). It's awesome to see the ending scene in Super Metroid remade and put as the beginning of this game, shows how long this series has lived and it's growth throughout the generations.
but yea i'm guessing my only complaint will be controls. I mean wtf, why not use numchuck and wand together like prime. Just don't aim the pointer at the screen when in 3d mode and when first person mode just aim at screen and use prime controls. seems easy.
I completely agree. The control scheme can totally allow Nunchuck mobility even in side-scrolling mode but they decided to go with the old-school layout and have you just use the Wiimote. There are many instances where you wanna fire the shit outta your rockets but you gotta STOP, flip the wiimote to point toward the screen, HOLD B to LOOK around (otherwise you will just move the pointer and NOT Samus' view) and you HAVE to hold B to lock onto something (and look around) so if your point passes a target while holding B, it locks on and won't change unless you let go of B….so if there are multiple enemies and you want to target the one in the middle...you will have to move the point from the top down to the middle and not from the side because you will automatically lock-on to one of the enemies on the side instead because your cursor just passed through them.
On a good note, you have Rockets that can be infinitely recharged by pointing the Wiimote UP and holding A (recharging Missiles doesn't take long at all either). So then you might ask yourself, why do I need missile tanks? Well when you get the Super Rocket unlocked....it uses 5 rockets....so you wanna be able to hold at least 30 rockets so you can fire away without worrying about recharging in the middle of the battle...but it is manageable in either case.
You can also refill your health the same way you recharge rockets but it only works when you have no more energy tanks and your last health bar is red and flashing....just quickly get out of range of an enemy, point the wiimote up and hold A....this takes a little bit longer than the rocket recharge but fills that last health bar back up to 99 but does NOT fill up any energy tanks....thats the save rooms job....and there are a SHITLOAD of save rooms.
i'm excited for this. i'm not a huge fps fan and more of an adventure game fan so this game seems much more in my alley than prime games and i love those. only downside is, that i heard it isn't that long of a game.
Oh it's DEFINITELY an adventure game. Yes I also heard the game isnt that long but I have played the full weekend and I am not finished….although I suspect (given the story) im nearing the completion....maybe....lol...I haven't unlocked (received authorization) for everything yet so maybe im not that close. I am probably 6 hours + game time in. But I guarantee that you will at least get a little stuck at 2 particular parts of the game Gotta use your brain.
also going to be weird having cutscenes, nintendo games aren't big on having final fantasy like cutscenes.
You are right, Nintendo isn't known for beefed cinematics but I have to admit that I LOVE how Nintendo made this game, it kind of reminds me a little like Metal Gear….don't ask...it just does. You get to see Samus as a woman and are brought to a realization of her feelings and emotions...almost like a diary....it's really good in my opinion...but that's just me...a Nintendo fanboy.

Not a problem bro, I just felt my input was needed in this thread because I can't quite understand why some would hate on the game the way they do. The best part is that I am not a hardcore Metroid fan and yet I still really enjoy this game. I think it's going to be one of the "Must Haves" for Wii owners and any Nintendo fans.
@Mr.:
Same here.
I found it odd that people were judging it from a leaked version, anyways.
Lol @ Leaked…..I don't buy things anymore. I got it a day before it came out hahahaha....my computer made a noise and that noise was equal to unwrapping the game for the first time.
Im Proud To Be A Pirate....especially on a OP forum haha.

Very long and positive post.
Well, that's reassuring. I'll be picking it up tomorrow and I'll be very much looking forward to playing it.
