Okay AP. I'm a guy who has never listened to Hip Hop, but lately I really want to try some different genres.
So I ask of you, give me a list of stuff to check out.
Just check out Zephos' rateyourmusic account.
Which is here. http://rateyourmusic.com/~Zephos
god damn fuck Kid Cudi
suburban white teenager-core
By the way, what do you guys think of the new Madvillain single?
Haven't heard it.
I still can't believe how many people were pressuring me to put Kid Cudi on my 09' list, as if it were hip-hop.

You put soulja boy in it, so they are forgiven.
And I like your IAM and Solaar reviews. A shame you don't understand.
I don't put things in based on quality. Souljah Boy is regrettably a member of the genre, whereas Cudi sings for the most part. I gave Souljah Boy the lowest grade possible, and he's one of only two albums to earn it from me.
And yeah, what the fuck is with the francophone world (unless you're flemish??) having such goddamned good rap music when most non-us english countries can't compete? Hell Canada's only now catching up. And Australia hasn't even tried.
I might actually be heading to the Roots Picnic on saturday. Any tips?

The french language is very well suited for the genre and we had very talented people like IAM that were not only precursors but also helped out a lot of artists in the beginning days.
Yeah other english countries try too hard to sound american I guess.
(ps yep I am flemish but am a fluent french speaker)
Eminem - Recovery just leaked recently and I gave it a listen.
He's lyrically on fire.
Seriously check it out.
@THC:
How can you guys overlook the genius that is Eddie Rath and his insane naruto raps?!!!

haha! It is rap! But about a topic a nerd like me can understand! haha! Is very funny!

what the fucking fuck
also, didn't know that Recovery leaked. Not Afraid was garbage, so I hope that the rest of the album is better.
I think THC's post was pretty bad.
Death to Nerdcore.
Well, Eminem's new album is embarrassingly bad.
I'm going to listen to a bevy of 10' albums right after I finish the current 06' cycle so stay tuned.
I expect Recovery to suck.
Out of curiosity Zephos, where do you find your hip-hop? I listen to a lot of music, but I have never concentrated on a single genre nearly as much as you do on hip-hop.
For the RYM lists?
Or for personal ownership?
If the former, blogs, rapidshare, the now defunct Lala, rapidshare, grooveshark, warez forums, rapidshare, youtube, and always google.
If the latter, fye, sam goody, amazon.
Here's a cool song.

I'm asking where you discover the bands/albums, though I guess your first answer would cover that. Are there any good blogs in particular to keep up with?
And that is a cool song. That tribal tom drumming brought out sort of a beat club poetry reading feel.
RYM has lots of good ways to check up on stuff.
This guy is a master of knowledge in the genre and his lists help big time.
http://rateyourmusic.com/~diction
Mostly it's looking at a large variety of other's lists, and finding anything related to certain sub-genres artists and collectives I like and betting on the association.
Thanks, man. I've downloaded a few albums featured on your list before, though always kind of assumed there would be less people on that site that know what they're talking about. I guess I'll have to look into it more and save that guy's page.
I use to be a HUGE Kanye West fan until Heartbreaker came out and ruined everything. But his new track that was leaked a month ago sounds like he may make a comeback!!

Now the voice has been toned up for legal issues but I think this is pretty sick! Give it a chance!
Well, Eminem's new album is embarrassingly bad.
What?! Recovery was awesome, I don't see how you can't like that. The only problem I had was him dissing his own Relapse CD, which I too, also liked.
And THC… that song.... it was just annoying. It sounded like SOulja Boy mixed with Izza Kizza.
Relapse was pretty darn bad.
Recovery was only mediocre.
I actually just found that Divine Styler album in one of my music sources a week ago and forgot you had posted it here. I was about to ask you if you had heard it, too, haha. I love it so much. Really wild and experimental stuff.
Have you guys heard of Jay Elevtronica (IDK how popular he is, I only recently gave up on mainstream for it's negative affect on black people), I think Exhibit C is one of the best songs I've ever heard. I was your opinion of him?

I thought Power was a hell of a come back for Kanye; he's always been one of the most consistent rappers out there, but Power just lays down the fuckin' law!
Truth be told I haven't been listening to a lot of rap lately, but LIQUID SWORDS 2 and Good Ass Job should be worth waiting for.

I love what I've heard from Jay Electronica, but he really needs to buckle down and release an album already. I'm having trouble finding any downloads for his various scattered works.
Hip Hop ain't dead…TRUE HIP HOP STILL EXISTS...Remember it ain't just a form of music...IT'S A CULTURE...there's thousands of emcees and deejays and graffiti writers and b-boys and b-girls out there keeping it true...real heads know...RESPECT TO ALL YALL TRUE HIP HOP HEADS OUT THERE...but FUCK THAT FAGIT-BULLSHIT NEW SCHOOL SHIT THAT IS TRYING TO PEPETRATE HIP HOP...any real dope emcee or deejay that is underground won't go mainstream because the mainstream/MEDIA don't LIKE POSITIVITY...so they just go underground and be independent... THEY do it for the LOVE... not for the fucken cash...IT'S ALL ABOUT PEACE, UNITY, LOVE, KNOWLEDGE, EXPRESSION, ART, RESPECT...
I know every real Hip Hop Head has their own way of seeing what Hip Hop is...and it's not possible to be explained..it's more like you live it and you know what it is your way...
You really gotta be willing to seek Hip Hop out. It's not offerred up on a platter. they're out there...you gotta step outside the industry box and then step outside your own box and open your heart !!!
...examples of REAL HIP HOP...

I thought Power was kind of meh. It had some alright vocals but I remember the way he did some of his lines coming out as awkward. I'm basing this on my memory, which is a horrible idea when you're me, but I remember it seeming like his lines had too many words or syllables in them for his style of rap.
Jay Electronica is a beast. A genius. Just a all around talented person. He just needs to buckle down and release the damn album. I just hope that it actually comes out EVENTUALLY.
Also check out this new song:
. Bangs is RAW!@JERK:
Relapse was pretty darn bad.
Recovery was only mediocre.
Ehh, maybe we just have different tastes. I found both to be pretty good albums.
Jay Electronica is pretty nice. I haven't given him the listening he deserves really, but I'll get to it.

You have a lot to learn if you think Liquid Swords 2 will be good…
Any hear More About Nothing?

not listening not listening
well, most of the Wu's solo sequels (Cuban Linx 2 was good though) have been terrible, and considering GZA hasn't put out anything good in years, I can't help but hope that it'll be good; Liquid Swords is my favorite hip hop album ever, and I'd like to believe that its sequel will be even a fraction of its original brilliance. I've already sort of geared myself up to be disappointed though…
sort of like with that second Deltron album (is that coming out this year?), I've sort of prepped myself to be let down, but I'm still hyped for it
Just let go. It's hard, we've all been there.
The W is not actually forever…
Jerk got me hooked on J-live. To be honest, I haven't even read that Zoo thread; I heard the music and went straight to DL the rest of the album.

seriously
Maybe but he needs to get his own beats.
atmosphere's chill with it
It's tacky unless it's a mixtape, and if it's a mixtape it's a waste of time.
of course there's a mixtape
Why are mixtapes a waste of time exactly?
I don't like pseudo albums of unpolished material when they become the focus of an artist's work rather then side bonuses they used to be.
