You're welcome! Have fun at the con! I can't wait to see everyone's pictures.

Thanks Al!na.
Last pic I can post before the convention. Actual cosplay pics will be posted in the cosplay Sakura-Con thread, whole Ryo Horikawa and Mayumi Tanaka info will be on the Announcements thread.
This prop will either be my greatest achievement up to this point, or my worst failure if it doesn't last the convention. It lasted the airplane trip here so that's something for now…
!
! Usopp's goggles. The straps are removable so I can store it really easily, and they slide into place through the slits. Yes, they can slide up and down so they can be on my forehead or over my eyes. Hard to see in this picture, but the lenses have a blue film over them like the anime version. Also, they're held in place by magnets, so they won't fall at all. If they do fall, it's because the magnet piece breaks off the headband (which I'm still worried about).
! Oh, and don't bother to tell me it's not centered. My ears are not symmetric, so everything is sort of shifted off center to adjust to my face. :P -
It isn't centered? I didn't even notice! lol. Looks good. <3
-
what you think about my franky arms?
-
I sort of agree with captainusopp that they remind me of Mega Man. But I do like the concept you have with them opening up for Weapons Left. I'd like to see them closer to completion. You said you needed to put on latex to cover them up? After latex application and if you can align the stars (something I haven't seen yet), I'd be most impressed.
If I were to make Franky, I'd go the cheap way and buy a Popeye costume to modify the arms, but that's just me. And I"m not big enough for Franky. Good luck with your arms!

thanks it only looks like megaman right now because i need to shape it the right way make it more rounded out.. i was hoping that the base would of been enough but it wasnt… so am adding another layer of foam to the top part to make it look less megamanish... i need to make the hand and once that done it should look more like franky...
since am not done yet i need to find something that i can coat the latex with and make it sandable to make it smooth.....

So coming back from Sakura Con and doing a quick Google search, I find it a little flattering that my Sogeking mask technique has been used a lot. Whether it's intentional or not doesn't really matter, since cosplay is meant to be shared, and it's not like I patent this stuff. I'm thinking more that Usopp/Sogeking cosplayers have some sort of hive mind going on.

http://www.instructables.com/ you need to make an account here and show how you did it. In order for you can show it off and get the credit for it

No props yet, but actual cosplay work was done this weekend.
Kongo Agon is almost done. Just gotta finish the work for the school uniform top. There's a few areas to top stitch, some work on the sleeves, and sewing down the large, faux-bias tape for around the collar and front part of the uniform. After that, gotta find a black belt from a martial arts store to wrap it. Managed to find some pretty good silver-framed Foakleys (that's fake Oakleys for anyone born in the mid-90s or later), which is a tip that I'm going for the manga version rather than the anime.
Niizuma Eiji is pretty much done in terms of clothing (yay closet cosplay). Just need to get some pens, and those weird feather quills he wears on the collar of his shirt. Oh, and that wig…which I'm having trouble finding a decent enough style and color for (I don't want a bob-cut).
I guess I'll do some work on Beckman this week. Need to further detail the gun because it was kind of rushed last year. And I'd like to rework those boot details. Buckles out of craft foam kind of got trashed after a day. I'll see if leather can hold up better.

Not sure how this was going to turn out with the yellow layer…but once the red hit...i was like damn this is nice.
Now to get another, some PVC pipe extend it to rifle length and Van Auger it out...
Pell and Van Auger will be on my radar heh.
-
Finally, some Beckman round 2 progress. Main things I wanted to do were to rework the gun and boots, and get a wig, because my real hair totally didn't cut it. I already remade the sash, so that got done earlier. I guess we'll start with boots, then some small gun progress.
Boots–
!
Crappy Phone pic because my camera was in the car when I was making this at night. Word of the wise, try not to hammer after midnight, it'll wake the folks. Luckily, after adding some muffler underneath the marble slab, the hammering didn't reverberate so much. Beckman's 5 buckles look totally stupid. But I'm trying to be accurate.
!
If you've seen pics of my old boots, the buckles were formerly made of craft foam. Now they are made of leather. Five of them per boot look ridiculous. Since I had to bend the leather, and couldn't really get a good form for the curve of the boot, they had to go on unpainted. With not too many mistakes, they are painted silver now. I forgot to take a picture of the finished product. But they look good…and stupid. /end Oda rant for stupid looking shoes.Gun…sort of--
!
So, none of my previous shots have any close-ups of the rifle panels, but last year was REALLY plain. It was just balsa wood cut into a trapezoid with points. This time, I thought I'd try adding a bit of the detail. The wood pieces above were cut out of bass wood. And here is my stencil drawn onto poster board. So I cut out the stencil, and traced it onto a slimmer piece of bass wood…
!
And voila. Cutting this out by hand with a few exactoknives wasn't exactly fun. And my hand was pretty sore, especially when trying to hold chopsticks for dinner that night. I like the look a lot. I also made a hammer for the rifle, but I don't have a picture. And I need to paint it still. The gun has gotten primed and 1 coat of paint. I need to just finish up the rifle stock, add the hammer to the panel, and make a resting pestle for the hammer to strike the "ammo powder"*. And yes, the two panels are NOT supposed to be the same size. One is slightly bigger than the other.
! *Note: Rifle does not fire. It is made of wood and PVC. The hammer and trigger do not move.Hoping to have some actual finished pics by Wednesday, especially since the trip to Fanime is Thursday.

Those boots turned out really awesome! And I love the designs on the rifle panels, I can't wait to see how that turns out!
-
Crappy cameran phone shot of the finished boots. As a note, no, I did not make the actual boots themselves. Those were bought. Made the buckles for them only.
-
Wait, you make props? And you're trying to barter with me for a commission? I feel it should be the other way around. XD Your work is amazing!
-
The props sort of fit me to scale though. And I'm not too "developed" with my craftsmanship that I can commission stuff. Still very much an amateur. Though we can talk about stuff through PMs. Will still search stuff for you at Fanime this weekend.

So rifle was finished, and I never posted a pic of the new paint job. Here you go.
Close-up
!
! Metal color is car spray paint. Works really well. The wood was spray painted "nutmeg" then drybrushed with yellow and brown acrylic. I really like how it came out more so than what I tried to do last year with the brown, yellow, and red. What worked for the pistols didn't necessarily work for the rifle. When I pose with our Red-Haired Pirates group, our Yasopp kept the old paintjob for his rifle. You'll be able to see the difference then.Full shot
!
! "My, Beckman. What a big rifle you have." "The better to club you with, Mountain Bandit."
! For those actually wondering, the rifle is about 4ft. 5in.And lastly, I asked for help about finding these pencil feather dusters for my Niizuma Eiji costume from Bakuman, as seen here from Blick's Art Supplies. As you can see, it's $15/each, and I need 4 of them. Someone said I should check Kinokuniya…they were $18/each there. x_x So, like any resourceful cosplayer (read: cheap), I decided to make them.
!
! Just craft foam sandwiching posterboard, and painted. The handle is made of Wonderflex and a wooden dowel. Not exact, but it'll get the job done, especially for closet cosplay. -

The bought boots do not a cosplay make…
The buckles are enough for you to claim it as yours....
It's not how much pointless effort you put into it....
But the spirit of it and what you added to make it work....
Btw the rifle?
I want one of those ....
for Van AugerDude that is just plain sweet....

I LOVE your props… so much T_T

Thanks guys, but I can't take all the credit. Much like Luffy needs his crew, I need my friends for help and ideas as well. If it weren't for fm13177, there's no way the rifle would look half as good as it does. And iroha helped out a lot with planning out those feathers, along with helping me paint them. My cosplays seem to always have a little bit of my friends' help and influence, which is part of why I'm proud to wear them.
-
Just a few more touch-ups on the black, and need a top coat of clear gloss to seal the paint, but it's pretty much done. And I'm pretty proud of it. I don't think I've seen another Akainu cosplayer make one of these. Apologies for the crappy phone pic.
!

please fist some Aces x3 that looks SO AWESOME
-
Very nice Ichnob, I'm actually working on a pair of magma fists as well for my Akainu costume, yours looks really great! I'll try to post some pics of mine soon in the general cosplay thread, I didn't make them from scratch like you did but hopefully they will look good enough, keep up the great work!

Boo @ Twitpics hotlinking. Here's the actual link instead, which I should've done. http://twitpic.com/20i3lm
@Ewing: Technically, it's not made from scratch. While I was thinking of using Hulk hands like yourself, I actually instead only focused on one hand for the main hit, for those who understand and those who don't want to be spoiled. Also, it's based off Hellboy's Right Hand of Doom, but I had to add a lot of stuff to it to remove those discs, and add an extra finger, since Hellboy's RHoD only has 3 fingers. The black was added mainly for two reasons: manga, and the cooler part of lava is the black rock that dries and hardens. I wanted the middle to be red with yellow, and the end of the fist and the part attached to my arm be "cooler" since it's exposed to the air. Sort of, hardening and melting at the same time. I'll head on over to the General thread to see yours.
Also, same wavelength, bro.
-
Awesome to see someone thinking (and actually doing something) about a magma arm, I'm also was thinking to do one for Otakon (next year). Good idea to use a Hulk/Hellboy arm since I was planning to maybe use foam or something similar….
-
That is freaking amazing!! I love how cartoony it looks, like the way you did the cool spots on there!
-
Akainu cosplay nearly done. Just gotta fix the epaulets and add some clear straps to make sure the coat doesn't fall. http://twitpic.com/21oqs5
Also, gold buttons. http://twitpic.com/21jj4t
-
OH MY GOD… LOVE IT u!!!
also... out of sheer curiosity... where do you get the clear straps? I am very pissed off at our jackets for falling off naturally since we didn't secure them in any way ... x.x plus I'm planning on WB... I'll have a prop and I'll need to move around so just curious!
also, SWEET buttons. Nobody will ever notice that awesome little detail D: I think it fits so well!
-
mmm sexy Akainu.
-
Thanks, omni and Coral!
Also Coral, you can get them at Joanns. In the notions department, you can find clear bra straps. I just saftey pin them on.
-
Hey Ichnob, I'm thinking about doing Van Augur for my next cosplay, and was hoping to pick your brain a little about how you went about making your Ben Beckman rifle. I have pretty good sized workshop available to use but just have no idea how to go about making a prop of that complexity and size. Any advice or tips you can give would be awesome!
-
I'm lucky that one of my cosplay group members (fm13177) happens to have access to a router along with the knowledge of using one. As you saw, the rifles were made of PVC and wood. What power tools do you have access to? Even if it's just a dremel, that will be good. There are a bunch of simpler ways you can tackle something like this, I just chose a more difficult method.
-
Ah ok, thanks for the info, I'm still trying to decide what is the best way to go about constructing my rifle for Van Augur, what would you say was the most challenging part of making your rifle for Ben Beckman? In my mind, the barrel of the gun seems easiest, with the wooden stock and body portion of the gun being the most complex. Let me know of any tips you might have or advice as I continue to try and decide the best way to start work on it, thanks!
-
I think this would work best if I take pictures of simple paper cutouts. It might be easiest to make the rifle stock out of two pieces, even with a router.
