Errr… so Iceberg and his life-work is in a crisis and you think Pauly will just leave his idol into the mess and won't help him to rebuild Galley-la (and the city, as Aqua Laguna wasn't just a bunny wave). I still don't get how Franky is dependant to Family, or even opposite, please explain. Quoting his own words his free as a bird.

Could be but I doubt it. It would be way too irresponsible and he had over two year of time to design the shipwright, he wouldn't change his mind after that. The way I've seen it is that Oda just used the Galley-la (especially Pauly) for distracting readers from the real candidate. While readers were debating whom of the Galley-las it would be, Oda surprises us with an outsides - with a character we didn't even knew actually having a chance. Much like with Chopper, Franky was just a silly background character nobody really noticed until he was actually given attention. It's often used trick of writers.

Well yeah, no one saw Robin joining. That's why we consider her the exception to every "rule" regarding who will join.

3. Ussop: loved by the Ussop Priates, but they decided to let him go so that he could persue his dream, as they didn't need him.

4. Nami: has a sister and liked by the villagers, but, again, they didn't need her to be there and her sister wanted her to go persue her dreams.

5. Sanji: liked by the Bartie staff and admired Zeff but they let him go to persue his dreams.

6. Chopper: strong relationship with Doctorina, but she let him go to persue his dreams.

7. Robin: no family or friends, utterly free to do whatever.

Vivi: princess of Alabasta, loved by the people and by her father and friends; even if her father would let her go, her duty to her people couldn't be ignored.

Paulie: famous in Water 7, one of the foreman of Galley-La; while important he is not needed by either his co-workers or the townspeople.

Franky: infamous in Water 7, the leader of the a large group of criminal misfits and outcasts; depended upon by the Franky Family, he can't ignore their dependance on him.

i agree with u on the strength oddity…but the backstory is pretty strong proof for franky. Nami DID have a backstory...the one with belmeil and arlong. as for robin...theres no doubt shes a unique member of the crew...but i believe that well find out her backstory soon, just like we did with nami

This whole 'obligations' thing always gets on my nerves concerning Franky and Paulie.

So let me put down for what I see as objective: both of them have obligations to their respective groups and both have substantial reasons to leave them, as well as to stay behind. It's not really fair to argue that one HAS to stay behind when both of them have perfectly good reasons to leave OR stay.

Well it could basically be anyone.. lulu, tileston, the square sisters.. it's still a possibility that Franky's build-up is simply for afinity to the new ship he's going to build for the straw-hats. But I must say, after seeing the anime, I really hope it'll be Franky that joins. He was just so frikkin cool, and somehow Paulie kinda came off as an older naruto to me so I hope he'll stay with galley-la when this is over..

GUTB can't be proven right unless Franky doesn't join. So until then, he's not right.
All of the FF originally wanted to be shiprights for Galley-La, but they failed the test. It's highly possible that after all this, since there will be a great need to fill in the missing gaps in the Galley-La ranks, and since Franky has trained them all these years, the remaining Franky Family may end up joining Galley-La finally. So they won't be dependant on Franky anymore. Considering that Franky can't hide anymore, and will probably have to escape from the government, I don't see how he can really be depended on by the FF anymore anyway.

There's the problem though that Paulie, some of the other Galley-la boys and the whole of the Franky Family are participating in the attack on Eneis Lobby. This would mean they'd all pretty much have to go in hiding afterwards. (unless they don't go any further than they are now and that somehow the giants and the few marines they beat can't identify them)

I still prefer Franky. I use to hate him because of his speedos. But then Oda started to give him more development then Paulie. All Paulie can do is do a rope thing which is the cheapest attack I ever saw. Franky is a huge weapeon that shoots fire and nails, he can turn his arms into a cannon or a gun, he can cough out missles and he has a iron fist which makes him a profit figther.

Paulie is loved by the city and he is loyal to Iceburg, Franky would would have to leave because now the government is after him. Paulie has no reason to leave Water 7. Franky is quriky and funny, Pauile is pushy and not funny.

I'm not being a pro-Franky and Anti-Paulie like it seems but I'm olny stating the fact that Franky is the next crewmember and Paulie does not seems to want to leave Water 7.

I now love Franky, he's almost funny and quriky like Usopp. Franky has a backstory unlike Paulie.

This is base on my obeservion.

Perhaps Oda never even had Paulie down as a "crewmember candidate" but always remained as a secondary fighter character of an arc (just like Waipa, Pell, etc)

I'm saying this because rereading the arc I can see that Paulie did not show as much evidence of joining as I thought aside from a slightly quirky personality (which are pretty STANDARD in many characters of OP), being a shipwright (like Franky but Paulie is to a much lesser degree) and a unique battle style

Looking back, Paulie didn't have any more coverage as any other of the secondary characters so could he have been in the running? Maybe it was our own too great expectations that made us view him as so

I agree with Ivotas. GUTB, your incessant declaration that Franky has dependants but Paulie does not is starting to bug many people. If you want to look at it that way, BOTH Paulie and Franky have "dependants" (ie. people who are depending on him but not necessarily inferior).

Actually if you'd noticed for the Robin incident, she was indeed given a great amount of character development and mysteriosity for a supposed major enemy (who didn't even fight the straw hats in the end). Compared to Paulie, who is a semi-main character in this arc, she has been given proportionately more. All those talk about her dream when the chamber was collapsing, the little things she does like laugh at Crocodile getting mad at Luffy hitting him, etc. So far, Paulie's only motivating force is his debt to Iceburg.

I'm not dissing Paulie. I have no preference whatsoever between Paulie and Franky, but the recent colour spread made it very clear indeed, and all those character development too. Well. We'll see if Toei pulls another Hikari E on us and puts Franky in the opening sequence as a member even though he technically hadn't joined yet. Or if he joins in the manga, whichever comes first.

All in all, I'm strongly against GUTB's style of "argument" on repetition and never ever rebuttal (because he can't?) and smarty-pants sarcastic "retorts" which are in actual fact self-destructing…

Paulie makes a nice contrast to Luffy and Sanji (his relative calmness and prudishness esp.).
He is also not annoying.

Franky gives me the shits, maybe because he looks too much like a guy who was really rotten to me or maybe just because he has no pants.
I don't know... But he grates me.
Plus he robbed Nami. She's gonna hate it if Franky joins (plus she will likely kill him, or at least give it a red hot go).
She may even make Luffy choose between them.
Which would make Sanji do the same.
It would be very messy.

Why still be mad at Franky? Nami tied Luffy up and put him on Buggy's doorstep. It's only because she's a girl that no one found it screwed up, I guess.

Him having no pants is cool. But I have weird tastes, so you may see it the way I see Pauly's clothes…..

Oh, and Pauly blows just as much money as Franky. Only worse, because he's actually notorious for it. Plus he complains about her clothes, so I think Franky, who's already teamed up with Sanji, would be a better choice there.

I honestly admit that at this point in the manga, Franky certainly has the upper hand, but I still have a self preference for Paulie. I just love how he compliments Sanji's character concerning the dress and behavior of girls.

I have to agree though, that spreadsheet from a couple chapters back really sets Franky in stone, even though it is no garantee.

Yeah, I think Franky has more than redeemed himself at this point in time. I mean, he tried to sacrifice himself into the custody of CP9 to save Robin and reunite her back with the crew.

It took me one chapter to like Luffy because the very first chapter flashed out his background. But nice try anyways.
And I didnÂ´t like Zoro the second I saw him because he practically did nothing then just being trapped. And yes it needed lots more then just 10 chapters for me to like Enel because I like characters because of their character and not because of their appearance.

I said before to you in another thread, I have no problems if it is your style to like characters just because of appearance. Everyone is allowed to have itÂ´s own opinion. But IÂ´ll certainly defenend any well developed character against mindless character bashings that prove just this point "his character sucks because his appearance sucks" and the like. I donÂ´t know if youÂ´re noticing it but youÂ´re doing unconstructive bashing here that even isnÂ´t coherent to the facts. Like when you said that Franky doesnÂ´t care about happens to the Strawhats. If you would have read what he tells Usopp and Robin then you would know that he cares very much about what happens to the crew. But you put it like it never happened. I would love if Kaku betrayed CP9 and joined. I always just liked him as a character. I was actually very shocked he was a member of CP9, whereas the others were more acceptable. It seems that chance is near 0 though. It would be very awkward having two long nosed people, also. =O

I also like character for their characters. I have had this same agruement from your perspective about Usopp many times.
I just wanted Franky to do away.
It wasn't shallow. It was so deep I didn't even know why.
He just made me uneasy.
Now, if I was really shallow I would just come in here and pretend to like him just to fit in.

i honestly cant believe the debate between whos joining is still going on…i mean oda clearly put franky in with the strawhats in that one color spreadsheet (forgot which chapter)
and even if tom is alive franky doesnt have to stay...plenty of characters in the past have left loved ones behind

Ener was Oda's most sophisticated villain so far. The character had a lot of details going on and he had a round personality. It's not about would you like a character in real life, if he/she/it wasn't fictional, but how well it plays the story, originality and credibility (some appreciate details and depth) - that's how a good character is made of. I probably couldn't stand some of my favourite fictional characters, their values, thoughts and actions, if I would met them in real life. And now that I'm in the subject, I've come to believe character developement is been given too much weight. I just don't think it's as important.

Kiden, believe me, this debate will be going on even after somebody joins.

@ Redpirate: To make it short, if you elaborate it like you did in your recent responses in this and the "…200 million..." thread then I donÂ´t have anything to say against it. My accusations for being shallow was just at the statements in the character tournament were you said that you donÂ´t understand why everybody likes Franky so much while his appearance is so weird and because of what you said first in the "...200 million..." thread about Franky not caring for the Strawhats while we all know that he does care for them know.

If you say it like you do know then I have no problems with it and respect your opinion.

About Enel, well itÂ´s difficult to describe. I actually love to hate him. He is a psychotic bastard with a god complex. He is like a little kid with too much power. HeÂ´s greatly developed as a villain by Oda. And thatÂ´s what I love about him. I hate him so much that I love his attributes as an antagonist if that does make any sense to you. :wacko:

I just felt like I was the only one who wasn't struck on this guy and I wondered why no one esle noticed the lack of clothes on the emperor. (Now I see his clothes more clearly.) His popularity is pretty absolute and I didn't see why. (not that I care about popularity. My favourite LOTR's character is Grima Wormtongue.)
I see why now. I do like him, it's just a slow growing, once annoying now catchy song like way.

It does make sense to me. I don't like his character trates but he is a very successful and interesting villian. I do like his fearlessness and lazy confidence. I like the way he expresses this in his body language. He reminds me a little of Freiza from DBZ.
An overpowered, spoilt arrogant child almost no one can stop. (though Frieza is in now way relaxed).
I really like Frieza too (though again I don't like most of his attributes).
Enel is a genocidal meglomaniac but he's an interesting genodical meglomaniac.

I think "in real life" was the wrong phrase. I meant "if I was a One Piece character" or "in unreal life." I get the whole fictional character thing and you are right. Most interesting characters would probably not make good companions in real life except on the page or screen.

I am gonna say Franky, as Paulie seems more attached to Iceburg, even though he and Franky have a deeper history. I dunno what will motivate Franky to leave the Franky family behind though. . .That's my only doubt.

Just Franky seems more Straw Hat crew material. . . Even though Paulie has the "cover yourself up woman!" routine, Franky has a bigger gimmick I think.
