I feel it's poetic his name translates to Red Dog because that's really what he is. Even if he works for a corrupt government, it's no different from a dog being raised by a bad master. It'll still fight, defend, and die for its owner but even if people judge the owner to be bad, they can't really judge the dog to be in any wrong.

in that example it sounds sure understandable that he reacts like he does..
but were still talking about a thinking being..a human, who should be able to think about his actions and has to ask himself "is it rly right what i am doing" being controlled by a higher force\power always makes it more easy for the individum cause so it doesnt rly has to judge his owns actions..
thats why humans are rly easy to guide..they will always follow those who seem strong\right without thinking further.
so akainu is a prime example of a normal guy who believes in a higher force which uses him to make their dreams come true, while he thinks he does the best for humanity.
interesting chara non the less for me, cause he`s rly close to the typical evil-being which never intented to be one and instead always tried to make the world a better place.

here you call it…its rly a scene who can be easily forgotten but when croc created the hurricane to destroy yuba he rly showed his evil face.. doing something not for his goal but just cause he knows that another person has to suffer cause of this is like you correctly said one of the rare moments in OP of pure evil, cause no higher motive other than having fun in other peoples destroyed fate was here the reason.

Actually, it depends on the point of view. Going by the popular belief, historical facts and in this case, opinion of World Goverment, Newgate failed as a pirate - as a robber, rapist, killer pirate. While according to the romatic image, which Oda develops and presents to us - Newgate was much more than successful as a dreaming swashbuckler.

As far as campaigns go I think one of Akainus downfall was lack of a unique campaign to pull him through...wish I had more free time to help the dude...there is always next year though.

Surprisingly the greatest campaign here was related to epic face luffy though

I am shocked at these results . Are these so many people here moping over Ace ? I mean I like the guy but Akainu actualy did what they were all suposed to be doing and he was actively fighting from the start and took off Half of Whitebeard's face , fought the commanders , tried to kill Coby , whereas Garp punched Marco once . That was it for his on screen performance .

Killing Ace isn't what's causing Akainu to lose. But him being a boring character with no good qualifies is. He's exactly like the Saboady royals, designed to be hated, that's his entire point. People who actually LIKE him betray his point.

I agree on common grounds that were not meant to be liked…but in my personal opinion I believe Oda meant for the readers to literally loathe the Tenryu but simply view Akainu as a downright villain.

Akainu is so badass, that's why I voted for him, but I can see why all voted for Garp, he's pretty awesome too. I think I like the realism of Akainu's design the most. :D

Given that his first major action in the series was to order an attack on a boatload of innocents, and his second to slaughter a bunch of his own dudes… I'd say that Oda intended him to be a straight-up hated villain.

poor Akainu. Too bad he couldn't have been in the last match against some stupid fodder WB pirate == he probably could've beaten Hiruruku too. OH WELL. Two Admirals down… one to go -- hopefully Kizaru can pull through!

However, i'm glad for Garp too n_n now if I can manage to draw something sometime this month it'll be Garp and Sengoku doing a little celebration xD
