Not necessarily what they like, just how they act.
Mmmhmmm.. .
Anime quality has been horrible since East Blue to be honest. I would probably still prefer the manga even if they had kept that quality, but now I can't even watch the anime and stopped after Enies Lobby. I tried to start watching it again recently and watched the newest episode(At the time) and they completely ruined the whole Bon Clay running away from Magellan. He didn't try to futilely attack Magellan at all and agonize over what to do for thirty minutes, he just fucking ran, and that's what compelled his decisions later in the arc. It's completely different to just run away compared to actually attacking over and over again and it having no effect and having basically no choice but to run. That's just the most recent example I have since I haven't watched the anime since. Animation quality is horrible compared to other series, granted they're not 300+ episode series that are rushed to put out an episode each week and adding filler material that ruins moments among other things makes me stay away from the anime. It is probably the best anime that has to keep up weekly with series that are so massive which makes me understand some things, but understanding doesn't always equal liking.
The anime is like "Hooked on Phonics" for people who don't like the manga and have creative and/or reading difficulty.
Yo, I'm seriously learning to like this kid.

I don't think there's something wrong with it. I'm just pointing out your hypocrisy. Which I do think there is something wrong with.
Belittling others for having their opinions on a subject is not the best way to convince others to see things from your perspective.
Anyway, I do believe that the anime does have an advantage when it comes to introducing new people to One Piece. When a person has no connection to the characters and has little knowledge of the story it takes something visual to get them interested much of the time.
So do you show the potential One Piece fan a manga page with Luffy Vs. Crocodile or do you show them an animated segment? I think that you will find more people will gain interest in the series by being exposed to some of the pivotal moments in the anime and this will cause them to gain interest in the story and in the future even buy the manga.

i didn`t know that 5 year old kids have such good points
Well… let's just say... One Piece manga has much higher quality than the average manga. One Piece anime is only slightly above average. However, anime is alive and well... animated 0.o so average enjoyment level for it is naturally a bit higher (as some people mentioned, the music, the animated fight scenes, etc). I'd say the two are pretty even... (manga is more flawless, whereas anime has the advantage of being animated)

I like how the manga plot doesn't have nearly as many unnecessary side stories and annoyances, and I really like the opening title pages/color spreads. On a whole, it's more fun to watch certain fights in the anime, but I like the manga better. Especially recently, the anime has gotten really annoying. It's made 40 epps of something that could have been completed in 20. The needless flashbacks and awkward "quality" art has begun to get on my nerves.
So, I like both but I prefer the manga.
Imean, srsly. Law flips people off in the manga but not the anime. That's an instawin for me.

I agree with you that the manga is better than the anime, but I think it's understandable that the anime is dragged out since Enies Lobby. We all know that the anime needs 40 episodes for something that could be completed in 20 episodes, but they have to do that because if they used many chapters for one episode, the anime would catch up to the manga. So they use 1 chapter for 1 episode since Enies Lobby (with some rare exceptions). And 1 chapter doesn't even last for one episode, so they have to do some annoying filler for every episode (recent example: Buggy and Mr 3-filler in Impel Down).
Please read this reply as if i screamed really loud in your face:
THE ANIMATION IS SHIT!
Nothing more nothing less. It's sad!
LOL… when refering to the manga do you guys mean the ones we read on the web... or actual volumes we buy
cos viz media translations is shite.... i can't believe they are still calling zoro, zolo... it really annoys me... theres no consistancy when romanizing r to l... they might aswell have named him lolonoa zolo (actually that would have annoyed me further).. piss heads.... also there isnt the intesity you would feel from scans because there isn't any swearing... lol
however mangas scan on the web are kool
the animes are really good... very very few filler... and i just like the way its made in general.. the music is awesome, the opening/endings are kool.. there japanese voice actors are great

I'm assuming that we're referring to the unofficial scans here. Obviously the official translations are lacking cause they need to censor stuff for the wee tykes. I don't buy any of Viz's volumes.
I personally like buying the Japanese tankobon when Japanese bookstores here import them. Of course, it's harder to understand what they're saying if you can't read Japanese, but sometimes even the scanlators and subtitlers we rely on translate certain phrases a little inaccurately anyways.
My fellow One Piece fans after reading all the arguing and general silliness that has gone on in this thread I believe that I may be able to help. Both parties seem to engage in a never ending circle of "I am right" and "No I am right." It reminded me of some the theological arguments I have ran across so. So I would like to ask:

God it really annoys me that people are complaining over the Viz Manga. They always say the "TRANSLATION IS SHITE" and can only say one argument, the whole "Zolo"-thing. I agree that Zoro sounds much better than Zolo, but that doesn't make "TRANSLATION SHITE". I read many volumes and compared them with Stephen's Script, and often the actual translation is perfect. For example the translation of the Zoro vs Mr 1 fight… everything was just like in the original manga.
however mangas scan on the web are kool
Kool? The translations for the chapters 20-170 on Onemanga are HORRIBLE. So you can't live with Zolo, but you can live with Luefy, Usop, Broky, Belmeil, Galu, BB, Creek and Elubabu? Plus attack name changes like Oni Giri to Killing Swords… and when you buy the actual volumes, you support One Piece.

The scans on onemanga aren't the only one on the web. Your argumentation on that point simply doesn't make sense. He never stated which scan he finds cool.
Why do you attack him on a specific one when he stayed on a higher meta plane?

grrrrr….. i hate people who pick and and choose quotes and misinterprate what i say completely!!!
20-170..... how many chapter are there in one piece?????? 579! that is a small percentage..... how annoying would it be if you were to go through the ENTIRE story and them getting your favourite characters name wrong... you be just as pissed off as i am.... and don't just diss the scanner like that... lol..they try their hardest and they get up to date manga to us fresh from japan sometimes... so a few of the words are wrong now and then... but they aint pros
I just wanted to say that the English translation of the manga isn't that bad as many people here say it is. You don't have to overreact like that o_O

Y'know, I'm reading Viz's Enies Lobby and it's close to perfect. Some minor changes are expected in a translation, take the German OP for example (name changes a plenty). But I'm sure you'll be glad to know that Viz has started "cursing" in the volumes again as of the Enies Lobby arc. Again, as much as I'm sure they'd like to, they can't change Zolo back to Zoro. And I'm sure putting up with one name change is better than other countries having to put up with numerous name changes.

I buy the VIZ volumes because it feels better to hold a book in your hand and read it rather then reading it off a bland screen. And about the whole "zolo" thing, when i bought volume 55 in japanese the character poll had Luffy's name written as "Monkey. D. Ruffy." People that get annoyed about L and R annoy me and I'm sorry for continuing this VIZ conversation in this thread.
It's because Zolo both sounds like a retarded clown, and was only made that way because of and brings memories of the dub.

To be fair, you did slightly get part of his point wrong…

I know I'm probably gonna get a "shut up, we ended that already" but, meh just my 2cents. ^^
I'll share my opinion with you, you're free to consider it if you want. Feel free to flame me, i really don't care.
Intro facts:
Well you know, Oda is a master storyteller and writer, and his story is astonishingly well made, you can say the manga is the best, because you actually can read the direct work of the mangaka, but the anime is another step. And I'm not an asshole saying nonsense, here are my arguments:
1.- In the manga, Tragic moments are just toned down/ aren't as tragic as in the anime i think. What i mean is that those special moments were you need to calm down and assimilate what you are seeing/reading aren't there. Example for this: searching in my volume 1….. Zoro's flashback about Kuina, specially Kuina's death. Compare that with the anime episode and you'll now what i mean.
2.- The one piece world is a very special world, and you can enjoy it better in color. Maybe that's just me, but i really loved how the world is expressed in the anime, rather than in the manga.
3.- The Sound. The voice actor's work, the BG/SFX sounds and the Openings and Endings are things that are really cool and simbolic to the whole series. You can understand in a better way the characters knowing their voices, and you'll overall think OP is more real when you watch it with sound. (You'll never have a "I wanna live" moment better than in the anime Robin FTW!!!) Also, Epic scenes are clearly better this way than "reading them".
4.- Funny momments: I've laughed many times in the Anime more than in the manga, (and i'm not a guy who laughs at every stupid thing, i'm actually very serious) But luffy saying "Tsugeee" or Sanji's and Zoro's fights, or Robin's silly moments are things you can't enjoy very much in the manga.
And actually, many people can complain about the filler episodes, but they aren't THAT bad. There are many funny moments in this episodes, and after all, they expand your OP experience. Without fillers it would be a lot shorter, and you wouldn't enjoy your experience with this series!(and they are actually not nonsense)
I actually saw every OP episode up to 442 and i took 6 months to do so. What i'm traying to say it's not "Don't read the manga, it's bullshit" No. What i'm trying to say you is that people should find a balance, but never change one for the other. I'm pretty happy i actually watched the anime before i read the manga.
The most important fact here is that ONE PIECE REALLY COMES TO LIFE IN THE ANIME.
Of course, the anime has many flaws, and i agree with many things people have said here too, for example:
And other things too. (And i also think Toei should make a better words in terms of puling up some aspects of the anime, but well, we'll see)
This is resumed to this: They both have their advantages and their disadvantages. But they help us see the one piece world in different ways.
Considering anime moves at it's own pace, and manga you can spend any amount of time on any detail. What the hell do you mean by there being no time to assimilate moments.
2.- The one piece world is a very special world, and you can enjoy it better in color. Maybe that's just me, but i really loved how the world is expressed in the anime, rather than in the manga.
I too enjoy the blobby watercolor mush over Oda's highly detailed ink work.
3.- The Sound. The voice actor's work, the BG/SFX sounds and the Openings and Endings are things that are really cool and simbolic to the whole series. You can understand in a better way the characters knowing their voices, and you'll overall think OP is more real when you watch it with sound. Hooked on Phonics strikes again.
The anime is pumped full of out of character humor, that's awesome of course.
And actually, many people can complain about the filler episodes, but they aren't THAT bad.
Filler is the most wretched thing about mass produced prime time anime adaptions of manga.
Especially animes with such clearly defined style and personality as One Piece. Like I want to see the droogs at Toei attempt pale imitations.
There are many funny moments in this episodes, and after all, they expand your OP experience.
They don't expand shit, no more then fan-fiction does.
Without fillers it would be a lot shorter, and you wouldn't enjoy your experience with this series!(and they are actually not nonsense)
By this logic I wouldn't enjoy the manga.
I'm pretty happy i actually watched the anime before i read the manga.
I NEVER would have guessed this viewing order!
The most important fact here is that ONE PIECE REALLY COMES TO LIFE IN THE ANIME.
Life = Awkward snail paced flubbery looking copy.
But they help us see the one piece world in different ways.
One is a different way, the other IS the One Piece world.
The anime has its awesome moments.
The manga has its awesome moments.
One Piece has awesome moments.
So really they're as good as each other. But for me the anime will always be that slightly more enjoyable as it's brilliant to see the manga come alive. Now unless I was to get the voice actors "dub the manga" and put it with music (as barmy as it sounds) then I will always enjoy the anime more.
I often find that someone waving a laser pointer around in my face is preferable to a good book.
The only good thing about the anime is the music.
And I use that music to have a pleasant background noise while I read the manga.
The only good thing about the anime is the music.

True that. One Piece has some of the best anime music I've ever heard.
@JERK:

bullshit that's Oda's highly detailed inkwork. Look at how shit they manage to emulate simple enough character designs. They always mess up Franky when he's moving or the way they draw Blueno's face. They somehow managed to make Gecko Moria look more like a giant turd. I got shitloads of examples. Which mental ward for children did Toei break into to find their One piece team.
The only good thing about the anime is the music.
And I use that music to have a pleasant background noise while I read the manga.

you guys need to uhh.. learn how to hear sound better or something
Not everyone likes death metal.
I like manga better but anime is fine too :D
Herakles are you Elric.
Gonna give ya a simple point of view…

Okay if you open Hidden you will clearly see how this fight is in the Manga..
They start on roof and then the roof collapsed and Bellamy goes in for an attack Luffy jumps to the ground and stands up. Then a lot of chit chat and Bellamy goes in for next attack is one taken down in single hit.
In the anime what is this Luffy jumping between roofs and even struggling a little bit ?
Luffy clearly looks stronger and better in the manga. In the Anime they add a lot of extra things to lengthen scenes and make jokes often on the cost of making Luffy look weaker or more childish.
So that is why I pick Manga.
God damn. The animators don't even get the scene.
There's no reason for dramatic battle music, for Luffy to lose his cool.
The entire point of the original is that we already know Luffy could flatten Bellamy. There is no second where we really think Bellamy is more of a threat then Crocodile, the last guy Luffy fought. The fact that Luffy could murder Bellamy is there from the first moment. And our breaths are held the entire from when Luffy first refuses to fight him, to the moment he comes back to get the gold. We're waiting for the inevitable destruction of Bellamy.
The animators are treating it like Arlong or something, where Luffy needs to take down this big bad guy for his friends.
Luffy getting mad at Bellamy is bullshit. He doesn't respect him enough to care about anything but getting the gold back.

I know they messed up that scene fully…...
and sorry about bad quality I just uploaded that video... hasn't gone to fully HD which it will go into after some minutes or hours... no idea how long youtube is working it out.... 720p is rather big.....
Manga = Best :D comes from the author...
Talking about punches, I think the Celestial Dragon punch was done justice in the anime. One of my favourite anime moments.
They must've learned from that ridiculous Bellamy scene.
I actually disliked that too, not the punch, but how some dingus decided to make the background all vague and shaded so that it looked like nobody was around except Luffy and St. Charles. Completely ruined the awesome factor of how Luffy was not giving a shit about what this huge audience of nobles and rich socialites were thinking.
The audience made that punch so cool.
Another great example of the animators butchering the manga is Kizaru's entire run in Sabaody. I checked out his initial cannon ball landing and Kizaru slaughtering the Supernovae (one of my favourite scenes from the arc) on youtube and they really do a disservice to Kizaru with the diabolical filler and pacing. You expect snappiness with Kizaru, especially in that fight with Apoo, Drake and the others, instead you get a doped up crackhead who looks like a complete idiot because he spends 5 minutes thinking about how to respond to a guy who just cut off his arm and blew him up.
Then, some of the things aren't even animated. The middle panel in the below image is presented exactly like that in the anime, albeit with shitty deviantArt amateurish colouring and a zoom effect overdubbed with the same damned audio track that has been a One Piece anime staple since it's inception.
!
Why call it animation when the team can't even be arsed.
