Two boxes. The DBox Z in Japan was Two Volumes.
Between Dragon Ball, DBZ, GT, and the Movies, it was 5 Dragon Boxes in total.
DBox, DBox Z Vol. 1, DBox Z Vol. 2, DBox GT, and DBox THE MOVIES.

@Kairouseki:

Fanboys with lots and lots of money. Mind you, considering how retardedly expensive anime tends to be in Japan, the Dragonboxes aren't that expensive, considering the insane amount of content included in each one.
…Oh, and the cover-art for the second box has been revealed;
Eh, I was expecting Freeza, but I suppose Vegeta works too. -
These DB Kai episodes really do bring back good memories….
-
Thanks Link-san and Vegard Aune(link looks cool too, Will read a bit of it)

I would, I havnt ever seen all of db,z,gt movies, I used to watch some sagas If I remembr correct of Dbz when I got home from school, some odd times in the morning I think, And it was awsome.
To me I think most of it would be fresh content.
Thanks

does anyone know when that first Dragon Ball (Not Z) movie is coming out? The one that was owned by liongate? :wassat:

I'd like to think it'll be coming out in either a Dragon Ball Movie Boxed set, or FUNi is saving it for an English release of Dragon Box THE MOVIES

Ah that sounds more reasonable sort of like the DBZ Double Feature DVDs I think Dragon Ball only had 4 movies so it might either come in a DVD with Mystical Adventure or they might release all four in a set. Thanks though.
-
Regarding the Dragon Boxes, it's also worth putting this into perspective.
Let's say you paid $80 per US Dragon Box. $80 for 7 boxes each would round out to $560. When Japan had both of its DBZ Dragon Boxes, they cost $1,000 per box. So you're paying HALF for the whole series than Japan did for half of the series.
Now as for the first DB movie, word is that FUNi hasn't dubbed it yet. There's also the matter of the fact that there's also word that they have access to the Dragon Box masters of all of the movies. So in all likelihood, we might see it in a Dragon Box release.
Will we see one for DB and DBGT? Only time will tell.
-
Still gonna wait for Blu-ray. You know it's gonna happen.
-
In a few years? Sure. But it doesn't seem likely soon. Especially when Toei's screwing around with Dragon Ball Kai and giving only that a Blu-ray release.
In fact, Kai might be the only DBZ series Blu-Ray release.
-
I'm totally confused about all this release stuff.
I mean like hasn't the whole Dragon ball series been released like several times by Funi ? -
Yes, but this is apparently the definitive collection.
-
You guys realize the entire concept of Blu-ray is for things that are in HD, right? It's at it's maximum already in DVD format, so there's no point in putting out blu-ray of non-HD things. That's why the Dragon Boxes are the top for the REGULAR series, but DBK is in HD so it can have a Blu-Ray version.
-
It keeps selling, so it keeps getting milked.
Pure and simple.
Same reason theres like 8 releases of Macross and Evangelion.

There are quite a few movies and shows that are available on Blu-ray that AREN'T originally made in high definition.
As for the release of the franchise…
Dragon Ball is the only one that wasn't fully released in the US. DBZ had a few release issues with FUNi canceling releases and starting new ones and what not. Dragon Ball GT is the only kind of consistent one, save for the "Lost Episodes" release.

And so when they are put on dvd, there is no real noticible difference in quality between that and the dvd edition.
(Personally, I don't see a huge difference between dvd and blue ray anyway. I'll aknowledge that it looks better, but its not huge or a dealmaker for me.)
-
Why should I go out and buy these DVD sets of the same ol' filler'd series I've seen several times and already own plenty of releases of and not the non-filler'd HD version?
No reason, exactly.

Kai is edited. Plus not entirely the same series?
-
Edited shmedited. I've seen the full 291 episode run countless times, botht he old super edited versions, the uncut versons, (thank you cartoon network) the proper japanese versions, I have dvds of all the best bits already anyway.
If I buy the series again, in any format, I WANT it to be the shorter, filler free version where things move along at a good clip, in proper stereo!
I couldn't care less that the hole Raditz blows through Goku is no longer horrendously bloody. I didn't even know there WAS blood in that scene until years after I'd first seen it. Its not a biggie. Compared to getting fast paced battles, no subplot where Bulma hangs out with crabs or s possessed by Captain Ginyu, the wacky antics of Mr. Satan, the many tedious adventures of Great Saiyaman where a planet busting powerhouse stops ordinary bank criminals, or people standing around talking for 3 episodes at a time while transformations take entire episodes? There'll be a couple filler bits I'd probably miss, but I know what they are, where they were, and Kai is leaving in some of the filler material ANYWAY.
On the whole, a shorter more to the point version is what I ALWAYS wanted out of the series, and I love that Kai is providing it.

Quoted for fucking truth. I've seen most of the series as edited on CN, but unlike today the edits weren't really that big, especially after FUNi took over. Everyone remember Freeza getting diced more or less intact on Namek with a TV-Y7 rating? Good times… I've only seen certain episodes (the ones I own on individual DVD) uncut, and I honestly can't tell a difference. DBZ just wasn't that badly edited due to standards at the time of it's release so nothing is really being missed with DBK being edited for me.
-

Reeeeeally hate to nitpick, but I gotta point out that FUNi always had Dragon Ball Z. They didn't take over anything. They were always the ones making the dubbed episodes. Only difference was they had an outside voice cast and was partnered with Saban for censorship guidelines to secure a reasonable timeslot.
-
The company that is Funimation today isn't that company that was Funimation 15 years ago. And it is certainley not the same as the company that was partnered with Saban.
-
Yeah, it's really something to see how they've pulled a complete 180 and completely changed their ways of dealing with the anime industry. What was once a mocked joke of a company is now one of the, if not the biggest of the dubbing companies that has managed to stick around.
-
I think funi regularly commands like 60% percent of the american anime dvd market.

Yep. Funi and Viz certainly are the anime giants of America. I'm glad that Funi has gotten WAY better at anime than when they started.

lol just watching vids of funi voice actors ranting on about how they hate DBE.

Those were funny and great! Nothing like two actors who are very successful in the anime business flaming a crap anime-based movie.
Chris Sabat made my day- "Seriously. That movie was whack."
XD
-
Somehow whenever I see clips of the end of the Frieza arc (when Funi finally decided to go it alone), I always had this weird image of them having already written the scripts for Saban and just using them so they didn't go to waste. Therefore, using the Garlic Jr. filler as a base and moving ahead from Trunks' arrival on, they could become way more authentic aside from some really weird moments.
Meanwhile, I sort of doubt whether to get another box of the original DB with people wanting the Dragon Box for that too…and how that would befit me too.
-
Yeah, I'm not touching the DB box sets unless it's confirmed we won't get Dragon Boxes for that.
As for them getting more authentic, I don't think they've ever really done that with the DB franchise. It's weird. You compare how they handled Fullmetal Alchemist and One Piece to DBZ and you'll see how widely different they are.
It still bugs me that they never went back to correct any errors they made years ago in their season sets, such as Tao Pai Pai being a General in the Red Ribbon Army or calling Dr. Gero the leader of the army.

But as I see it, it just got better and better until they were up to the level of FMA and OP. I didn't say that DBZ was ever perfect considering there were still some really strange and stupid moments…as well as a few WTF dialogue moments you expect from the Saban era. (I still remember that one Toonami ad where they had a line by Krillin where Vegeta "had a bad case of hemorrhoids"...or you could just watch some of the more memorable Kajetokun clips from that era...er, stuff like "The Balls are Inert" or "The Whole Universe is Going to Die"...since "OVER 9,000" was Saban-era)
BTW: you saved me a ton of money, though I may need to return my first box of DB that I already have. I rushed to get it not thinking DB had a Dragon Box like Z)
-
No problem.
It's also worth noting that it appears FUNi has the Dragon Box versions of the movies. Would kinda explain why they cut off the single releases of their remasters (aside from them being redundant). So it might be best to keep an eye out.
I'm sure eventually DB and DBGT will get Dragon Box releases once DBZ's DBox release is done.
-
FMA and OP Funi was able to dub from scratch, with their many years experianced studio. DBZ they were kind of in a screwy psoition where when they started, there were already 50 episodes setting a standard in terms of how the characters sounded, the music, the way things were named, and still having the scripts from the previous guys. (If you check the credits the writers and directors from the first 2 seasons were still caarried over into the end of the Frieza arc. I don't recall many of the names off the top of my head other than Terry Klassen, but there was considerable overlap.) They even still had the dreaded "in the next dimension" in the first few episodes.
Plus, they were a brand new fresh studio at that point, with only a few actors and not a whole lot of budget. (I think they had what, 5 guys and 1 woman doing the ENTIRE cast initially?) and so of course their early stuff was amateurish, but they got a lot better as they went. By the android saga they had a much better feel for the characters and were at a more professional level, while STILL trapped by some of the early things. And even though they've gone back and reworked it a few times, (and basically re-recorded the series for the game how many times?) there's still chunks and bits of that early shitty Saban remnant in there (Krillin, Nimbus, Tien) that just couldn't ever go away due to the way they recorded to the end, and THEN recorded the start again…. Though I don't really think I ever wanted the english voice cast to try and pronounce Kullilin, that would have just been ridiculous.
If they got DBZ for the first time ever today, and it had never been dubbed before, I'm sure we'd have a much more accurate tighter version with the original music still intact, etc. etc.
Also, while they often inserted joke lines where they were uneeded and strayed from the japanese dialouge, there were a COUPLE things here and there where I actually preferred the dub line over the japanese. Not a lot, but sometimes the intent or delivery of a line was just great, while the japanese was much more... japanese.
Dragonball had a rough and varied history of syndication and releases, its not quite fair to hold a release of 10-15 years ago in a VERY different anime market, to what it is today.
Even on OP they still got saddled with some of the previously released material's problems, like "Zolo". But since they were able to completley clean start there from episode 1, they could make a better fresh approach, and give it a proper go from the start.
-
My main beef is how even after all these years, they've hardly made an attempt at fixing the series properly for the dub. They had the chance with the season sets and only redubbed a few Vegeta and Kuririn lines for Season 3. Even then, with the redubs of Seasons 1 and 2, they still went with the same style while borrowing lines from the previous dub (including errors) and adding one too many swears to push the whole "IT'S UNCUT!" schtick.

I think that's because they have no real intent to ever "fix" the dub. Those who watch the dub are in all likelihood those who grew up with it, and thus are those who would probably prefer it the way it stands.
Or maybe I'm just trying to make an excuse for them and over-generalizing.
-
I think they're just lazy. I remember when they did the first "uncut" of the early episodes and that they pretty much went up to one of the episodes which they stopped in the middle of in the last Saban ep (the Burter/Jeice fight). It seemed proper, but when I saw clips of what came after…it was the same old crazy "season 3", probably complete with "bucking cowboy Krillin" as he's pierced to one of Frieza's horns. (probably as gruesome as the series got) The problem is you're never going to satisfy both the die-hards (who want a perfect to Japanese sub/dub) and the nostalgiaists (who like watching the Saban dub for it's comedic value and crazy moments as well as it's memorable VAs spouting ridiculous lines) at the same time.
-
If it was a 26 episode series we probably would have gotten a perfect edition re-dub a long time ago.
As a 291 episode series, they were never going to redo everything from scratch, particularly since the real die hards that want super accurate just want the japanese track anyway.
And I do like some of the dub lines better. One specific example is while Goku is fighting Buu, theres a part where in the Japanese Buu says "Gonna kill you!" and Goku bemoans "I should have finished you off when I was super 3 and had the chance!"
In the English version, Buu goes "Gonna Kill you!" and Goku grins, "You wouldn't be the first." which not only seems less whiny, but implies that he's more dedicated, more willing to fight to the very end to beat this guy, that he's fought to the end to beat other opponents and this one is no different.
Goku valiantly fighting to his last just resonates with me better than "Yeah, I could have beaten you but I wanted the kids to do it." I know they have two completley different meanings and give the scene VERY different contexts, but its one particular example where I DO like the dub interpretation better. (particularly since the Cell saga already had driven home the point of Goku trusting the next generation to take care of buisness if he wasn't around.)
-
I guess I'll put my two cents in.
Funi's dub (and some of Ocean's) are what first got me in Dragon Ball(Z). I liked them a lot, and I had NO IDEA that there was so many mistakes. I remember reading the Manga and watching the Japanese version, saying "Wow. Funi has so many errors." Of course, I like the Funi Voices (and Japanese) so that's a plus. It was hard for me to insult the dub that made me a die-hard Dragon Ball fan, but since I'm a fan of the English and Japanese versions now, I can do it with ease.
One mistake that irkes me to death is how Funi pronounced Kaioken. They pronounced as KAY-o-ken. Yet they pronounced KAI right. WTF?:wassat:
Though I know of the English dub errors, their terms have grown on me. I use Krillin, Tien, Special Beam Cannon, etc, despite knowing it's not really right. But I also use the Japanese terms too.
I never figured it out. Was it so hard to use Goku's last name at least once in the English Dub? The only time I heard it was in Burst Limit.
-

That's something I never liked. Goku being portrayed as a hero of justice. That's not Goku at all. It's the same shit they did where Goku used terms like "sword of injustice." That's completely out of character for Goku to say something like that.
He fights these people not to be Earth's savior or any protector of justice. He does it for the fun of fighting, getting stronger and because more often than not, his friends and family have gotten dragged into a big event that could lead them to no longer living.

Granted, they also pronounced it as "sun" rather "so-n", but it's nuts that that was the ONLY time they ever used his adopted family name in the English dub of any kind.

I agree, future trunks and gohan are much more hero type than goku let alone vegeta they only wanted to fight.
-
DBZ is nice…but one piece also no????????????????????
-
-
?? who is best ????????????????
-
I agree, future trunks and gohan are much more hero type than goku let alone vegeta they only wanted to fight.
Gohan…eh, not so much. Future Trunks I'll agree with somewhat, if only because he wants to prevent the present timeline to become like his own and wanting to put an end to the chaos in his own time.
Gohan was always just forced to fight because he was more often than not relied on to help. Even with Majin Boo on the loose, Gohan was force to be the one to try putting an end to Boo due to Goku no longer being there and his latent power made him the strongest living person on the planet...until Boo absorbed Gotenks and Piccolo, of course.
-

I thought protecting the place he had gotten to know as home was also part of it, which is why he wanted to train Uub at the end of the series, knowing he wouldn't be around to save Earth forever.
