They are both incredibly close in years. 17 and 20. Why do you keep insisting this has anything to do with why they are apparently fooling our eyes from seeing how similar they are.

That happens after the equivilent of 120 pages between the spoiler thread and the actual thread. Go fig.
But Ace looks nothing like Luffy. Different facial structure, different eyes different nose, freckles, different body type (Ace is much taller), and in the anime they even have different skin tone. Luffy said they were brothers, so we accepted that fact. If Luffy had said "He's my old childhood friend!" we would have just as readily accepted that and never once assumed that they were actually brothers.
I'd post a manga image of them side by side, but… there really aren't any. ANd I dont feel like photoshopping one up right now.The random narcolepsy is odd because that seems to be a family trait, but that could just be a result of the hellacious training Garp put them through as children.

They have a different skin colour, a different body build, Ace is more muscular, Ace has freckles, Luffy doesn't, Luffy's face is round while Ace's face is more slanted, Ace's pupil's are much smaller than Luffy and even their hairstyle is pretty different. They really aren't that similar.
I had hoped Moria would do the same, but no luck as of yet.

The difference between 17 and 20 is not gigantic physically, if anything the features become more chisled but they don't fucking change bone structure, massive height, eyes, and pop freckles out all over the place.

Probably translators. They assumed they were talking about Dragon and screwed up the tenses.

I think it's both.
On the one hand it's probably a legitimate mistake stemming from the fact nobody saw the Gold Roger revelation coming. Much like Iva, they made the logical assumption that if Luffy is Dragon's son so must Ace. Though I think implying Ace was Dragon's son was also Oda's point to both hide and foreshadow the coming revelation in one stroke. They discuss Ace's father, we think they mean Dragon, they know they mean Roger. Actually, whether intentional or not, the translators cover this nicely by having Garp say he told Luffy about "his father" and not "your father_"_ (meaning Ace and Luffy both)
Also, I think Luffy and Ace resemble one another enough that nobody would think twice about them being brothers. But are different enough that you're not about to mistake one for the other easily.

I believe there is a MAJOR plot about to unravel, at least a couple of the Shishibukai are about to go renegade. Boa & possible Kuma to say the least. I suspect there is a pending plot by possibly Some Shishibukai and White Beard and possibly Dragon and possibly some of other players like Rayleigh and even Shanks. They've planned something right under the noses of the marines.
People are going to betray the Marines. I can smell it. The tension and expressions here at Marine HQ sez it all. It's gonna happen! Check the records of the people and what has subtly gone on within the past few chapter.
Plot and betrayal on a grand scale.
