I like the viz manga I own, as long as the story is unchanged and there is no serious censoring, I'll be happy

Nakama shouldn't be translated
why?
No legitimate reason
Ain't just nakama, either. There's a ton of terms that end up being left untranslated (and I'm not referring to attack names). Especially bad when someone throws a shit fit, claiming the use of "Navy" in an official translation is somehow "incorrect."
-
Are people actually giving Viz shit for translating "nakama"?
-
Are people actually giving Viz shit for translating "nakama"?
I hope not. It's one of the best things they've ever done.
-
Are people actually giving Viz shit for translating "nakama"?
'Bout three years ago, they were finishing up the Arlong arc in the magazine….
-
Actually Using Navy is more Correct than Marines… as for Translating "Nakama", I prefer it translated, there's no reason for it to be left in Japanese
-
Filtering "nakama" to "gaygaygaygaygaygaygaygaygay", reason#567 NPC is better then AP.

I have One Piece volumes 1-20 of the Viz manga, and when they brought Mr. 2 up, they translated ''okama'' to ''Oh Come My Way''. They made no secret that he was "a man and a woman" and "a queen"; but when they stuck a translation note below a panel with the back of his coat showing, that's what they put. "Oh Come My Way." I didn't like it at all, and I'm sure other fans who read the online version didn't either, but that's what they did.
"Nakama" is usually shipmate, friend, or comrade, depending on the speaker; when Ace was talking to the Straw Hats about Blackbeard, he said that he "killed a shipmate and jumped ship," but it varies depending on the context.
The Marines are the Navy. The Shichibukai are the "Seven Warlords Of The Sea", and all Devil Fruit name and attack names are translated. No honorifics and no cursing, either, so when Vivi addresses Zoro (Zolo in the Viz version) she says "Mr. Bushido," left with a note saying it meant "way of the samurai," and Luffy proclaiming that he's going to "kick Crocodile's butt."
I don't think there have been any edits to the acual manga, as far as cleavage and nudity goes. But with Ace's tattoo, they edited it to make the manji into crossbones in the Shonen Jump version only, whereas they just stuck a translator's notes underneath the panel to say "this is an ancient Buddist symbol, not a swastika."
If you have questions about traslations and edits up to Nami's fight with Ms. Doublefinger, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer them. -

This was the same way in Japan. Viz had nothing to do with it.
Originally Whitebeard's logo was a manji symbol until Oda was told to change it. It appeared as a manji symbol only in the Shounen Jump printings, whereas it was redone to be a crossbones symbol in the tankoubon printings.

Ah, see, I thought that it hadn't been changed until Ace showed up again in the Post-Arabasta arc…I wonder why Viz didn't just edit the English tankoubon version to be crossbones, too, if they knew it would change...
Thanks for the info. -
The Marines are the Navy.
This is correct also. Marine in French and German means Navy and the word used, Kaigun, is Navy not Marines which is Kaiheita. It kind of bugs me that Funi uses Marines in their dub but I guess it's not really a big deal.
And anyone have like a list or can link to one (there has to be one ) of what exactly was censored (if anything) in the Viz volumes of HXH?
-
Actually, FUNi uses both Navy and Marines. When referring to the whole group, they call them Navy, but when it comes to soldiers, they call them Marines. Which is actually not incorrect, since they were actually one in the same during the actual age of pirates.
-
funny note: in some of the latest naruto volume release some characters say other characters names either wrong or they use someone elses name.
-
That's the result of Viz rushing out a shit ton of volumes all at once.
-
Zolo is fine with me, as long as I don't have to have a translation were they call Wiper fucking Wyler, and having to read "King" Eneru.
-
Why is Zolo acceptable but not Wyler?
-
@Kairouseki:
Why is Zolo acceptable but not Wyler?
Zolo isn't really that lame, while Wyler sounds like some villain off of
Codename Kids Next Door. -
Filtering "nakama" to "gaygaygaygaygaygaygaygaygay", reason#567 NPC is better then AP.
Suddenly, I love NPC…
-
What's really wrong with "King" Eneru? Eneru was never really a God to begin with and Gan Fall didn't fall under the very definition of it, either. Skypiea's usage of God went more among the lines of the title of a King.
Yeah, yeah. Religious usages and what not, but it's not a stretch considering the way it was tossed around in Skypiea.
-
The point is that it's changing something from the original for no reason whatsoever. Eneru was called a god and should therefore be called one in Viz's volumes. The same goes for Zoro and Wyper. Viz's reasonless changes are one of the reasons I quit buying their OP volumes.
And FunimationRules, you're a hypocrite. You overlook one change yet are opposed to another. Changing ANY of the name in OP is for no reason other than they can; logic apparently does not exist at Viz.
Anyone know what Viz censored (or changed) in HXH :whistling: ?
-
@Kairouseki:

Changing them for sake of consistency is no reason?
-
Viz's changing Zoro to Zolo is completely different, as that was the only one where they went with the original name and then later printed a different name. Then they went back and changed all later prints of early volumes that used Zoro to Zolo.
-
Changing them for sake of consistency is no reason?
What do you mean by this? If they hadn't have changed the name in the first place they wouldn't need any consistancy. If you're talking about being consistent with 4Kids: Viz has no obligation to stay consistent with 4Kids. They're supposed to do a translation, not change stuff to be consistent with an already unfaithful dub. The show and the manga should be treated as 2 completely different things.
-
Actually Using Navy is more Correct than Marines…
It says marines on their flag, IN ENGLISH, its clearly supposed to be marines.
its on their shirts too.
-
Again, Marine is French and German for Navy. Also the word used, Kaigun, means Navy while Kaiheita means Marines. So clearly it's Navy.
-

Okay I'll admit I did make a mistake on that part what I meant to say is it's not like all the changes they make or will make to the manga will happen for no reason.
-
But many of them are for no reason. I might be wrong with some of these as I do not read the American manga but:
Zoro –> Zolo
Made because 4Kids did it (I think that's the reason) which isn't a good reasonSea Kings --> Neptunians (Not sure if this was changed)
No reason that I can think ofTranslating Sanji's (and Robin's?) attacks
No real reason as these were foreign originallyDamnit, I know there's more but I can't remember them.
-
@Kairouseki:

Dude, Marine maybe french and german for Navy, but in One Piece, its written in english, not in french or german, and last time i checked marine is english for marine.
about the other stuff you said, you win.
-
How do you know it's written in English? It would look the same written in English, French, German, etc. All of them use the Latin alphabet. Also, notice that there's no s at the end. In English it's never Marine but Marines, while in French and German it's Marine with no s. Now this hasn't been proven but it's likely due to Oda liking to use foreign words.
-
@Kairouseki:
Translating Sanji's (and Robin's?) attacks
No real reason as these were foreign originallyI could see them changing that for anyone who wants those translated into english (even if the translations themselves are awful) but then again this is Viz bad translations are their style.
-

It is an established fact that in the one piece that things are written in english, it says DEAD OR ALIVE one the wanted posters man, in english, hell in the latest opening for the anime, each of the straw hats has a character bio, and their written completely in english.
-
You might be right, but I'm sure I've seen things written in other languages too. And I wouldn't use the anime as an example considering Oda didn't make it.
Edit: Marine HQ has the kanji for Navy written on it. I'll try to find more examples.
-
yeah, certain techniques are written in other languages, like Sanji's fire legs thing, but generaly most things that arent written in japanese in the one piece word are written in english.
lol, even the title is in english.
-
There's too many chapters to look through for things. Seems like we both have good arguments.
-
@Kairouseki:
Translating Sanji's (and Robin's?) attacks
No real reason as these were foreign originallyNah, they leave em in the foreign languages. For Sanji, they even stuck translation notes for the first time they appeared. There's so many at the end of his fight in volume 10, it's almost ridiculous. No notes for Robin, though. Guess we're expected to know Spanish numbers and how to say 'flower' in French. I bought these volumes within the past couple of months or so, so it's not like they were only there in their first printings either.
-
"Although the literal roman characters "Marine" are displayed prominently throughout the manga on the hats and uniforms of officers and at military installations, the Japanese word that is used is "海軍" (かいぐん) "kaigun", which translates most closely to "Navy"."
-
What's really wrong with "King" Eneru? Eneru was never really a God to begin with and Gan Fall didn't fall under the very definition of it, either. Skypiea's usage of God went more among the lines of the title of a King.
Yeah, yeah. Religious usages and what not, but it's not a stretch considering the way it was tossed around in Skypiea.
What's wrong with a completely made up title the character never uses that warps all the intended use of the actual word that's cut? C'mon guys!
-
And again, Marines were part of the Navy during the actual time of pirates. They were one in the same back then, as opposed to being two different entities. A Marine soldier could be part of the Navy.
So all of that heavily outweighs the old "Well they have Marine written in English!"
What's wrong with a completely made up title the character never uses that warps all the intended use of the actual word that's cut? C'mon guys!
The title of "God" is a made up title in Skypiea and Gan Fall prefers not to call himself that. :P
-
The only stuff Viz does to Sanji's attacks is tack on a different word in place of ''Shot'', so we get stuff like Collier Coup, and Veau Vengence. Save for Crocodile's Barchan becoming Crescent Cutless, they keep the foreign stuff foreign.
-
Calling the only section of the military that exists Navy is like calling a one room apartment a bedroom.
-
Except that analogy doesn't work, seeing as how Oda has clearly made it obvious the Japanese word being used is "Kaigun" which translates to NAVY.
-
The analogy does work unless your saying Oda is infalliable.
-
But nevermind that Oda had Ener yakking endlessly about being god.
King makes just as much sense! :)
-
I'm sure they'll keep in the god bit, since they kept it when buggy said he would be like a god in vol 2 or 3
-
I don't know why every wastes so much time going on about the Marine/Navy deal. Even if Oda made an error, it's a fictional world, who the hell really cares about a real world term? Whatever direction, just roll with it.
Now, what the hell is a Wyler?
-
A way to cover up the unimaginably vile word that is Wiper.
Hunter X Hunter edits please  ?
-
HxH is rated T+ so they've left it unchanged I think.
Any edits you see were actually in the original. -

That's different. That's a media smash hit. Dragonball's big with kiddies or was, anyway. Viz is trying to maximize they're profit by marketing to a wider audience. Oh and none of their T rated products carry any nudity in them.

Ultimate Muscle begs to differ. Mantaro's penis runs rampant along with plenty of breasts. Shonen Jump Advanced, I believe is unedited now. UM had minor edits in the first 10 or so volumes.
