The trick o it, is simply select the parts you want, Hair for Example,
then right click & go to new layer from copy, then go to that layer, & press ctrl U & that will open up the colours.
Make sure to have Colourise ticked at
the bottom, then play about with tones, it's far better than painting by hand, because it keeps all the original lines in place
Once you've done that, you can keep making new layers fo body parts & play about with effects like bledning & embossing or even adding Patterns to the Hair.
I wasn't aware there was a science to this…

Toyed about with it for a bit, but After I put too much pattern in, It just began to look weird, so the version that's posted is the one that has a good balance of the attributes …
