I never really thought of the characters as strange, but that's just me, and maybe I'm just used to the weirdness. Anyway, Wanze is just one of those typical "Oda creations" that never fail to surprise me, and I really can't wait to see Sanji kick his ass (maybe by eating his "armor?" you never know).

**Yeah, work and classes were a b!tch there for a bit. I'll be going away again to Japan for work in a couple of weeks. I just hope they'll have some cool Water 7 merchandise out by then! Wants a Franky and Paulie key ring!I was hoping that Water 7 would end up tying more into that main story, SanzenSekai. It kind of has with the World Government and Pluton getting involved, but it's still only bits and pieces of information. Oda is still holding the majority of the plot close to his chest. He'd be a great Poker player!
Back on the subject though of the "weirder" characters… it's a shame T-Bone got taken out so early but he's a perfect candidate for a mini-story. Wanze is the "Satori" of Water 7- just too freaky, fat, and annoying. Can't wait until he's defeated. Though I LOVE Sanji using knives. He should use them every now and then but I suspect this will be a one-time deal.

I'm a little bit lost here. I've seen some people on this forum mention that Jinbei is a merman. When was that revealed?

i like the whole dark vibe..i mean if indeed they lose a crew member such as robin to the government..it shows they aren't invincible and they still have a long way to go before becomign the strongest pirates..so i like how oda is making it darker and stuff..and i'm hoping this storyline will resolve the weapon issue..one of the many loose ends in one piece..but if you think about it..they are fighting the marines..which is awesome..so i agree fighting pirates after pirates would get boring..so i like it how they're finally facing off the marines..so i like it..BUT..i disliekd the skypiea arc..well i liked it towards the end..but i just found most of it somewhat boring..but thats my opnion

since he was the leader of the fishman clan that arlong was apart of i think its quite safe to assume that he also is a merman since arlong would never work under a human.
and btw his name also means whale shark ;) makes it kinda obvious doesnt it

**I understand all this, but I can't remember when was it mentioned in the anime/manga?

that he was the former captain of arlong and his crew was mentioned by yosaku or johnny(i can never tell them apart  ) before luffy and sanji got to arlong park when they were talking about the grandline and the shichibukai.
i dont remember what chapter but it shouldnt be to hard for you to look up.

**I don't remember Yosaku mentioning Jinbei. Ah well, probably my german wasn't that good back then. :D
This whole "OP getting darker" concept reminds me of Trigun. The first half of the series was mostly comedy-based, but the second half was very grim and dark, especially after the introduction of the Gung-Ho Guns, since every time Vash would defeat one of them they'd kill themselves or each other just so they could cause Vash pain. -
without interesting characters, one piece wouldn't be what it is today.
if it were just generic there would be no chopper :(

**It somewhat surprises me that a whale-shark would be the leader. Whale sharks are hardly ferocious creatures, despite their massive size. Great white, perhaps. Unless it's less a "I'm named after what I am" and more a title– the largest shark in the seas.
