Ambition? What the hell are you people talking about? Its Haki. I thought Yibis wasn't going to use English terms anymore anyway. Its freaking stupid.
-
I´m just reviewing the Eps, atm i´m after the Bellamy-fight (ep 151).
Right after Blackbeard lifts up the Wantedposter, he said also something about haki. K-F translated it with ambition.
I dont know if they meant the same that time and now.
-

Oh god, Just like Nakama, Ambition has become the new Untransrataburu Warudo desu.
@Hezu: Yeah, K-F translated it as Ambition too.
Stephen has and still does Translate it as Ambition because he seems to know what he's doing. -
What was the term Marcoh and Joz used when Shanks visited Whitebeard's ship? It was translated as "amazing vigor and drive", but was the original text talking about the same thing there?

Stephen has and still does Translate it as Ambition because he seems to know what he's doing.Thats not really the same thing as nakama, which can be done either way. Haki is a move or technique that should keep its original name.
-

Yeah it was.
from all the times they've referred to it, it's pretty obvious by now that this isn't some kind of power, it's just a person's strong will and drive to achieve their goals. A person's Strength of that makes them able to deal more damage, predict the moves of someone with weaker ambition, and even fuse their ambition in a weapon.
in a Manga where a character can light his leg on fire and keep it from burning not only him but his PANTS because the "Fire in his heart burns hotter than the fire on his leg", the Idea that the sheer might of one's lofty ambition can be used against the enemy shouldn't be a stretch. Why do you think Luffy's is so OMFG awesome when he accidentally unleashed it? Because his AMBITION is so high that he wants to become Pirate King. And no, Nakama can't go either way. it's a Very Easily translatable word. It simply means a Friend in a Group of Friends. Crewmate works perfectly fine.

Like I said, I don't care about Nakama. If anything I'd probably agree with you that its not necessary to leave it as nakama, since every single anime uses it. But I still think all names of any kind should be left untanslated. I really wish there was a different subber other than Yibis, since I'm sick of their insistence on using shitty English terms. I will never accept stuff like Gum Gum as a translation, or heck any translation at all for attack names.
And how is Haki not a technique? Its been used as and described as a technique since the beginning. Sanjis flaming leg is the same thing. The explanation the series gives as to how it works doesn't matter and has nothing to do with this.
-
But Haki isn't a name of anything.
It's just these people saying "You have Strong Ambition" "we Know how to make our Very ambition a weapon"
If you translate it, it gives it more impact because then you have people turning just the sheer force of their Ambition into a weapon, so it makes for a more meaningful scene when Boa basically says that Luffy was able to subdue everyone into submission with the sheer force of his Ambition, which is to become Pirate King. Giving Luffy a nice bit of character development.
Leaving it untranslated just makes it seem like another attack. Which it's not. -

Is this an elaborate act or are you really that retarded? While you are wasting everyone's time with your childish tantrums, a group who is using many japanese terms has been posting their stuff in the fansub forum for weeks.
-
@Skull:
It seems to me like its supposed to be a technique the same way Mantra is, but whatever.
the only reason it seems like that, is because a scanlator couldn't figure out how to translate it a few times and left it untranslated thus giving it the implication that it's an attack, making everyone think it's one and go off onto tangents about it. Most even left "Haoshoku" untranslated when Luffy used it.
So instead of Hancock saying "That Boy has the Ambition of a King", something only she shares, which makes PERFECT SENSE considering he wants to be Pirate King, and she's Empress of an entire Nation, the scene is lost on the Scanlation audience who simply assumes that "Haoshoku Haki" is some kind of Mystical ability, when really it's just that the person has the Ambition of a King. -

Because the guy said about a month or so ago that they weren't going to use English terms and are still doing it? Changing one or two words back isn't the same thing as doing proper fansubs without stupid dub terms. You can insult me all you want for thinking that way, but thats not going to change the fact that I and most likely the majority (except a handful of people on this forum) would rather have the standard KF style that everyone else has used for the series. And I honestly don't get why people like Aune look up to Funi so much in the first place. Their dub is pretty half assed, the acting is laughable, and just about anybody with similar levels of time, experience, voice talent pool, etc could do a better job. I seriously can't watch that shit for any amount of time without the horrendous acting, voices, and dialog grating at me and distracting me from the actual show.
-
@Stephen's:
Crew: If the old guy's wiped out all these guards at once,
then he must be able to use some kind of magic or sorcery, right?
He must have some special powers!
How do you know him, Luffy?
I'm telling you, I DON'T!!Hatchan: They call that power "ambition."
I don't know much about it, either…That sure doesn't sound like a technique to me.[/sarcasm]

They don't really use "Dub Terms" as much as they simply translate everything out.
they only use "Dub Terms" when the dub did a perfectly accurate and mostly literal translation that makes perfect sense (Gum Gum, Nakama, Etc) but when they don't like a term the dub went with, or they think the Fansub term is more accurate, they go with that. For example, they use "Pound Cannon" instead of "Caliber Phoenix" since even though Caliber Phoenix is accurate, Zoro is LITERALLY saying "Pound" so they want to keep it. better than most other fansubbers who actually put that attack as "Pondo Hou". Even though it doesn't matter, the Literal Translation would be "36 Pound Phoenix"And your attacks on the FUNi dub are simply your opinion, which you're entitled to, but saying you "Don't Get" why we like the FUNi dub isn't right, since it's our right to like the dub just as much as it's your right to hate it.
@Zkaiser: That's a bunch of people who don't know what the fuck just happened basically saying "Shit!! What the hell?! Is this Magic?!" Hachi even says he knows almost nothing about it beyond what it's called. Back before people knew the World revolved around the sun, and that's where day and night came from, among other things, they assumed a bunch of evil spirits, or gods were simply fucking with us.

It started with and is only used in the dub. Rubber Rubber is more accurate since it literally represents Luffys ability and doesn't rely on being a defunct definition. And using any kind of English word is not the same as leaving the attacks untranslated, which they gave the impression they where going to start doing a few months back. And if Zoro is saying Pound, then how is "Caliber Phoenix" accurate at all? Or is that just you wanting to defend Funi?
And your attacks on the FUNi dub are simply your opinion, which you're entitled to, but saying you "Don't Get" why we like the FUNi dub isn't right, since it's our right to like the dub just as much as it's your right to hate it.
Got any good reasons for liking it? In almost every single scene the dialog sounds stupid and awkward, and like the show in general is not being taken seriously in the least. I watched the scene during Arlong where Luffy and co are about to march to Arlong Park, and the townspeople sound like they are casually talking about the weather in these mock joke voices when its supposed to be dramatic and serious. The Bleach and Naruto dubs are leagues better than this and even they aren't that great, which is sad because One Piece deserves far more consideration as a serious work that could appeal to more than just little kids than those two.
You really don't have a clue what's going on, do you? Ok, since you are obviously too slow to even tie your own boots I'm gonna help you out just to make you shut up:
Why is it that your unwilling to actually debate me and instead can only throw insults? What is it about the dub terms that are so great to you?
Thats one episode.

Why does it matter to you what I do? Seriously listen to this stuff.
Apparently Funi thinks Kaya should sound like Anna Nicole Smith and Kuro should have some pansy businessmen/psychologist voice that doesn't sound the least bit like the sophisticated, calculated, scheming, intimidating voice he had in the original. And thats just the first few seconds.
-

Chi is just the natural energy of the universe.
Haki is just the natural energy of one's spirit. The fact that Hatchan knows that it's called "Ambition" means that it has a name. A name that people assigned a force that they couldn't fully understand but yet knew was connected with someone's ambition. Also, what doesn't Hatchan know about Ambition? I'm pretty sure He know what the dictionary definition of what Ambition is but he doesn't know how about the force that that Rayleigh used.
Ambition is a force.

@Skull:
Gum Gum is a dub term. It started with and is only used in the dub.
Wrong. It started with the Viz manga before they started following 4kids, not a dub.
@Skull:
Rubber Rubber is more accurate since it literally represents Luffys ability and doesn't rely on being a defunct definition. And using any kind of English word is not the same as leaving the attacks untranslated, which they gave the impression they where going to start doing a few months back.
Ideally, Rubber Rubber would be what they should have gone with. Won't argue that.
Gum Gum was, and I have to keep saying this, Just there way of keeping the phonics similar while translating it.
Just take the U off the ends of "Gomu Gomu" and say that out loud, Sounds REALLY close to Gum Gum doesn't it?@Skull:
And if Zoro is saying Pound, then how is "Caliber Phoenix" accurate at all? Or is that just you wanting to defend Funi?
I've explained this a lot already, but here it goes again.
The Literal Japanese is "Sanjyuuroku Pondo Hou" or "36 Pound Phoenix"
The attack is a double pun, since Hou means both "Phoenix" and "Cannon" but the Kanji that's written in the Manga is the Kanji for Phoenix, so the literal translation would be "Phoenix" for Hou, and NOT Cannon, cannon is the pun. as illustrated here http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/3065/houdm5.jpg
The Pun comes in from the word "Pound" Being there, which is the term used to define the Caliber of a Cannon. the reason Pound is used is because a 36 Caliber Cannon fires a 36 Pound Cannonball. Thus making "Caliber" and "Pound" exchangeable in this situation. Though Caliber makes a little more practical sense since "Pound" would really be referring to the Cannonball itself and not the Cannon.@Skull:

uum… that would be a lot of opinion right there.
The dialog is great, and is QUITE OFTEN literal to the Japanese, they even had Luffy say "I'm gonna kick his ass" instead of "Send him flying" even though the later is technically more accurate, because most of the fanbase likes that better. I really like the Dialog, they NAILED the March on Arlong Park in my eyes and the entire scene was literal to the Japanese (Except for ONE adlib from Luffy, but that was just to make the scene less awkward. IN Japanese Luffy just shouts "I'LL DEFINITELY HELP YOU" Making it really weird for such a somber scene, they ad-libbed in that scene to make Luffy speak Somberly and then shout out, making the scene less awkward) Then I really like how they worded Yosaku and Johnny's lines, they made them sound a lot less awkward.
Fansubs: "We're waiting for "Those guys" to show up.
FUNi: We're waiting for the arrival of a few certain menA LOT Less awkward. I also vastly disagree with you on the delivery, they sound just as urgent and upset as in the Japanese version in my opinion. it's your opinion that they don't.
@Zkaiser: I've come up with a very detailed reason why it's just someone's ambition. Other than "He called it 'Ambition' like that was a name, so OBVIOUSLY that means it's the force" you haven't really said anything against what I said.
It's just the person's strength of their Ambition, Hachi has proved time and time again that he's not the sharpest tool in the shed, him not quite understanding things and just simplifying it isn't really beyond the realm of possibility. -
Wrong. It started with the Viz manga before they started following 4kids, not a dub.
Which is a localizaed English translation and not part of the original anime or manga.
Ideally, Rubber Rubber would be what they should have gone with. Won't argue that.

It all sounds awful and like the people involved aren't even trying to take it seriously. You could put together any comparison clip betweem Funi and the sub and I could give you tons and tons of reasons why I thought the Japanese version was better. And do you just prefer dubbed anime in general or something? Because thats the only way I could see someone liking this crap. I usually prefer subbed and only very rarely like a dub when its on par or better than the original, which to me is almost never the case. A LOT Less awkward. I also vastly disagree with you on the delivery, they sound just as urgent and upset as in the Japanese version in my opinion. it's your opinion that they don't.
I don't understand how you could think that. Even something like Looney Tunes sounds far more natural, serious, and fitting to the situation and show in general than the One Piece dub. Not to mention less cartoony. In fact, most American animation sounds a lot better and more professionally done than dubs in general, even if few American shows ever touch upon things like drama or serious situations or do them correctly. Dubs usually sound like people reading from a script and doing this dumb little cartoony voice, where they look down upon the source material, don't take it seriously as art, and instead do their part as if it was something off of Nick Jr.
-

Lol. Don't count on them listening. They never cared how awkward or out of place something sounds and probably wont start now. Not to mention that it is implied to be a technique all throughout Amazon Lilly. You do not enhance arrow strength or do any of the stuff they did just because you have "ambition". Everything that was shown makes no sense in that context.
-

@Skull:
I just think its a stupid sounding translation thats unfitting to the style of the show. And Gum Gum uses a U sound while Gomu usually is a hard O. They dont sound the same.
Ok… did you even read what I wrote at all, or did you assume what I was saying and then give your average response to it?
I didn't Say "Gomu and Gum sound Exactly the Same" said "Gomu and Gum Sound SIMILAR" Similar =/= The Same. Similar just means has similarities.
They both have a G sound and an M sound. and doesn't fit the "Style"?! What Style? It's a Japanese comic book made for little boys.@Skull:
If Calibur is not part of the original word, then it shouldn't be part of the translation. It shouldn't matter if the word referss to the calibur or not. And Zoro saying pound should be a dead givaway to Funi as to what the name sould be.
It's just taking one word that means something and swapping it out for another word that means the exact same thing. For example, a lot of times in the series they'll say "Luffy Dai Pinchi" which is literally "Luffy's in a Big Pinch". The Japanese are saying Pinch in English. since that sounds awkward to a US audience, they switch out "Pinch" for "Trouble" Meaning "Luffy's in Big Trouble". EXACT same meaning, less awkward.
Saying Zoro has a "36 Pound Phoenix" sounds kinda funny as an attack, saying it's "36 Caliber Phoenix" gets the cannon pun across while being less awkward.
Pound is more commonly associated with Weight than it is with the Caliber of a Cannon. It's just making that more clear.@Skull:

Again, your opinion, which you're allowed to have. It does match the Japanese pretty much always, I'd say there's a very small percentage of times when it doesn't. it's Naive for people to think there is literally only One way to translate everything into English, FUNi just gets a lot of crap for choosing the different route than the fansubbers.
the Acting is Fine in my opinion.
And what did I "Make up"?@Skull:

Sounds like you're just a subbie who prefers things with subtitles.
You don't like Dubs as a general rule, so you don't like this one. You're allowed to think that way, but don't chastise anyone for thinking any different than you.
I think the Death Note dub is really well done for example. You're allowed to think that way, but stop acting like we all have some kind of mental handicap just because we don't agree with you. At Least FUNi includes the original Japanese version with subs on the DVDs, so just watch that and let us enjoy the dub.
-
This is the only thing that I have ever heard you say that I have agreed with. The rest of your points are retarded at best, but I do like this.
Why? The rest of my points other than the accuracy and necessity (or lack thereof) to use English names are pretty much the same kind of thing (which is a legitimate view). Or are you just saying you agree with the point about western animation sounding better and not that dubs are done poorly? What part do you agree with?
and doesn't fit the "Style"?! What Style? It's a Japanese comic book made for little boys.
This pretty much sums up all I need to know about you and your views. If you don't even understand that shows have differences in style and presentation and what that even means then I don't see why I should bother arguing with you. No wonder you prefer dubs. Just because they're in English, right? You don't see any difference at all between any English dub and its Japanese counterpart, such as quality of voice acting, believability, delivery of lines, tone of voice, accurately trying to fit the overall mode and scene, etc? Could you even explain to me why you even like One Piece in general, or what makes it different from most other shows like it?

Someone disagrees with you and calls you retarded.
You defend yourself with "It's a Legitimate View".I use the same defense, that my view is just as legitimate.
you Chastise me for liking FUNi.Yeah, makes LOTS of sense

She said that "I'm gonna kick his ass" is what the fanbase prefers and that "Send him flying" is more accurate. Nothing about either line being more accurate because it's preferred.
-
Isn't there a way for yibis fansub group to appease both. I mean perhaps the first HD release can be towards the funi-type group that prefers the straight english sub. While the later release of the SD can be for us the japanese hybrid subs. I'm not sure how difficult it is to create scripts and do the timing but im sure replacing one word can save you future conflicts and increase your fanbase/members on your website. etc.

I understand that, I just want to know how "Gum Gum" Undermines the style of One Piece. You have Luffy, who is a complete moron who acts like a little kid half the time, and somehow "Gum Gum" sounds funny?
For the record, I watch it in Japanese without subtitles most often, which is why I understand most of the more intricate things that usually go over most heads.
I was like, the only person in the argument to even sit and think "MAYBE Oda actually Wrote the word 'Phoenix' in the Manga" and went back to check when the debate broke out about Zoro's Pound Phoenix attack, instead of bashing FUNi like everyone else. -
I understand that, I just want to know how "Gum Gum" Undermines the style of One Piece. You have Luffy, who is a complete moron who acts like a little kid half the time, and somehow "Gum Gum" sounds funny?

It doesn't fit because while Luffys character is goofy, its not done in exactly the same way a little kid would be portrayed as being goofy. Certain aspects apply to his character, but not all. And usually his attack names fit what hes doing a lot more closely than gum gum. He usually doesn't use stupid names for things like attacks, just because the viewer could percieve it being funny to him on a childlike level unless he actually has a reason to. Randomly calling his main line of attacks "gum gum" makes little sense. And what do you mean by more intricate things that most people wouldn't understand? Do you mean just the puns, or is there more to it?
She said that "I'm gonna kick his ass" is what the fanbase prefers and that "Send him flying" is more accurate. Nothing about either line being more accurate because it's preferred.
Alright, then I just misunderstood her then. That isn't what my argument was mainly about. And just out of curiosity, does anyone know what the original line is when Luffy says that? What makes either line more accurate?
Sounds like you're just a subbie who prefers things with subtitles.
Its not the subtitles I prefer, but how the dialog, acting, etc all sound to me when I watch the original version compared to the dub. It doesn't matter if the subtitles are there are not.

As much as I honestly prefer the Japanese terms, why can't the people who like to bitch about it simply watch it in RAW form if they hate Amercianized subs so much?
I mean it's not like they don't know what's going on. =\

Skull Kid - Lobster Pot Sticker 2.0, now with 40% more DERP and 100% less hope.
Translation debates on simple words make me pee blood.

@Skull:

You're dealing with a character who has a technique called Gomu Gomu no Ba…(ka), involving him essentially switching his brain off. Redo.
-
Uh…
stays away from the odd debate
This episode, the previous one, and the chapters they consist of have raised Sanji's level in my book to 2nd best character in One Piece. The fact that he has an entire "mini-boss-arc" devoted to the running gag about his bounty, or lack thereof before, makes him entirely pitiable and lovable.

Difference between a joke and his main name for attacks. And that actually describes that particular move better than "gum gum".
-
I don't quite see how that argument works when we have a number of attack names already that have little to do with what they actually do, like Mr. 1's guard , Spider, Mr. 2's flip kick, Ano Fuyu no Sora no Memoir (Memoir of That Winter Sky), Lucci's Shigan Ouren (Yellow Lotus), and Kizaru's lightsaber, Ama no Murakumo (Heavenly Cloud Gatherer).
Rubber stretches, gum stretches. I don't really understand your argument other than blindly following the Japanese or having a poor grasp of the purpose of localization.

Subs on YouTube, don't know where else.

3:(just trying to distract everyone from the sub/dub argument)

I like how you talk about it in your post.
Pretty bad distraction, bro

They'll miss the PUNS, man.
THE PUNS

@Skull:
Ambition? What the hell are you people talking about? Its Haki. I thought Yibis wasn't going to use English terms anymore anyway. Its freaking stupid.
Yeah, a translator who actually translates words is freaking stupid. Do you actually know what the terms you're using actually mean?
-
They'll miss the PUNS, man.
THE PUNS
And when the word is Jap. you miss EVERYTHING, man.
EVERYTHING

Good lord Skull I mean just be glad they're fucking doing you a favor of subtitling this show for the fans who are you to tell them what's right and wrong it's their own sub… Just be glad they're doing it, and thank them
if you don't like it, don't watch it. -
The part that really got to Elric wasn't that Skull was bitching, but that he was bitching about there not being a "Japanese Terms" fansub anymore, when clearly there is, they've done realeases of the past few episodes and don't seem like they're gonna stop anytime soon.
-
wth it's called a sub for a reason how about it being just ambition…
-
Wow… Either you like it fully translated, or you don't. Why you like it or not has nothing to do with this. It's personal preference. It's like saying you're not allowed to like bananas because I don't like bananas <.<
Subtitles = Translating something foreign into your native language, and then use the translated sentences and put them as text for people to read and understand. Just make the audience understand the context of the episode, either with fully translated lines or semi-translated lines with notes. The main thing about a sub is to understand what the characters are saying

There is no fansub like that from where Instantz stopps until now that I know of.
