Using some of my birthday money, I went and got this game today.
I haven't dived to deep into it (I only just finished the Warrior of Light's story mode) but from what I've experienced, its quite awesome.
Visually wise, the game looks really nice and all the detail to every character is really crisp and clear. It looks far better than what YouTube or any other video site makes of it, and the opening scene alone is the kinda thing worth charging admission for.
Gameplay wise, its incredibly fun. Its kinda like the Final Fantasy version of Smash Bros. The difference obviously being that its one-on-one and there aren't any "items" to get during a fight. Rather, the "items" is everything that you equip to you're character beforehand, and the level of customization is almost ridiculous. As with typical Final Fantasy fare, you can equip different weapons and armor as well as accessories, but you can also obtain summons, skills, HP/Brave attacks to assign, shop for new skills make a Chocobo get you stuff as you batt–head explodes. But yeah, theres lot of little details and options that make this game more in line with an RPG than an actual fighter. This is only emphasized by the fact that you can switch between action oriented gameplay and a menu-command based gameplay almost akin to Kingdom Hearts (the former personally I find much more fun).
The controls might take a little time to get used to, but I've been playing the hell outta the demo, so it wasn't that hard to get a grip on. That AND the fact that you switch between using the control pad or the analog stick to move your character, a most welcome addition in my eyes.
The voice acting is great for the most part. Bartz probably being my favorite (at least of the Heroes). I think honestly the only voice that I don't really care for is Zidane's. But at the very least he's tolerable. The Onion Knight I didn't like at first, bur he kinda grew on me.
I think the only gripe that I have is how the action and camera can get a little janky at times particularly if you're fighting in a walled, cramped area you'll find yourself being obscured by a pillar or something. Quickmoving can also cause this problem to, at least wall running has on occasion. You can move pretty fast on a wall and its like the camera struggles to keep up with you. And controlling a wall run can also be pretty difficult as well.
Overall though, its a fantastic title that will not only satisfy any Final Fantasy fan, but satisfy the justification requirement to get a PSP. I can already tell the game is gonna have a ton of replay value and wouldn't surprise me if it ends up becoming the console's Game of the Year.
