Holy shit, for some reason I was randomly thinking just yesterday "man, it's kind of sad that Chikao Ohtsuka will most likely die within the next decade or so before One Piece is even finished, I wonder if they've got replacements for all of his roles…" I'm a little freaked out now. Rest in peace, and condolences to his son Akio Ohtsuka.

One dead and 80+ injured after smoke fills Metro train in L'Enfant Plaza for 40 minutes.
Not sure how newsworthy this is tbh but I rode these trains (different line though) every day for my summer job and the metro is pretty much considered THE only way to get around in much of DC so this is a little terrifying for me to read about. Especially the fact that they were told not to leave the train for 40+ minutes. This and the crash they had several years ago makes me kind of weary of how WMATA handles things.

RE: The Travelling Thread/ The Home Town Thread
I live in this metro area which is incredibly convenient for getting internships at foreign policy-related think tanks and institutions, and also if you like cherry blossoms and museums I guess. IMO the height restrictions get a lot of shit from some members here but honestly I find it makes the city pretty manageable without being completely boring. The Maryland suburban area where I live is pretty comfy and not too big (although development is crazy right now in Montgomery County), and Virginia's immediate suburbs are where you go if you want to feel like you're in a slightly bigger city with tall buildings (most of which I'm very glad are on the other side of the Potomac). Right now though I'm going to college in rural northeastern Ohio about an hour outside of Cleveland, so it's pretty cold and there's not too much to do in the surrounding small town. During the summers I go up to Cape Ann which I'd say is a pretty great place during the summer. New England really knows how to make its god damn ice cream!
I'd also love to visit Bulgaria sometime, particularly Dupnitza where my grandmother came from but also Sofia because it looks like a pretty neat city. -
RE: Random News Article Discussion II
I thought it was going to be D.C. Thank God it's not D.C.
Just about to say that. Could you imagine the congestion on the Metro and the Beltway in a city with no goddamn highways in the downtown area? Or the possibility that Pepco would be in charge of keeping power up throughout the games' run? There'd be no more trees left in all of DC and the Maryland suburbs! And they'd still lose power if the wind blew a little harder than usual. That's not even going into the local government itself yet!
Oh yeah, congrats and good luck with that Olympics thing, Boston. Just keep most of the tourists away from Cape Ann and we'll still be on good terms.

RE: New Years Resolutions
@Mr.:
Happy new year everyone!! Off the top of my head my resolutions are to do well through the rest of senior year, graduate, get into and attend this one college, and make the most of my first semester there (and the rest obviously, but that isn't this year). Man this is going to be a crazy big year, but hopefully a great one as well.
Done spectacularly, done, done, and absolutely done! This year, my resolutions are to keep doing well in college, get into an A Capella group on campus somewhere, hopefully enjoy my math and computer science courses enough to consider majoring in either one of those subjects, and generally (continue to) be happy with where I am.

of course it's the women's fault
Why am I not surprised
2ch denizens are apparently like 4channers except even more xenophobic and sexist, so I'm not surprised that they're being shitty like that. Nice to know that anonymity breeds hateful vitriol pretty much everywhere.

Philadelphia is a massive city right near me and I've literally never ever been there lol.
I went to Philadelphia once on a 5th grade school trip. It was alright, though if you don't care about all of the historical stuff not much else seemed that interesting tbh.

RE: How was your Day 2 (general chat)
Next week is gonna be crazy, and Omega Ruby/Smash U lay at the end of it all.
I have two labs to type up this weekend, one of them being part of a poster, my old lab instructor is coming back for three classes (goodbye, easy lab sessions…), and Calculus III is really shaping up to kick my ass. I just know a test is around the corner.
sigh Gotta do my best.
Is it those convergence tests? Because for me it's the goddamn convergence tests.

RE: How was your Day 2 (general chat)
Today has been too long of a day for me to have a Calculus II midterm at 9:30 tomorrow that I barely know the material for and am probably going to bomb. ESPECIALLY since I was intending on being a math major. I really hope the curve kicks in…

Don't forget about Kansas! (although why anyone who can afford to move would want to live in Brownback's Kansas let alone marry in it is beyond me…)

i'm honestly more willing to pin it down to the maryland healthcare website rollout being a dud and technically under brown's radar as well as people being like "MARYLAND'S SAFE BLUE SO WE WON'T VOTE"
(also are you actually from maryland gp? if so i had no idea we were literally in the same state this whole time)

RE: Random News Article Discussion II
well at least it looks like ct will keep its democratic governor… http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2014/11/04/connecticut-governor-race-tight-as-polls-open/ (hopefully that's some comfort for MK)

There are these things called elections. Maryland had a Republican governor as recently as 8 years ago.
True, and I don't think a republican governor will make too much of a difference when both houses of maryland's legislature are controlled by democrats.
Could you PLEASE make an effort to not be such a giant twat?
Do you really need to call people names to prove a point, garypotter?

Somehow a fucking republican became Governor of maryland. I have never EVER EVER been so fucking angry and upset and holy shit please tell me we can survive these two years and obama can veto the more insane laws that the republicans pass…..........

Scalia hasn't turned anything. The conservative rulings recently have had a libertarian bent, that especially includes Hobby Lobby.
Roberts is the swing vote, and his gay marriage record is good.Unless I'm imagining a completely different Roberts, do you mean Kennedy?

RE: Random News Article Discussion II
The supreme court didn't intervene for 5 lower-court rulings about gay marriage, so it's now legal in Indiana, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Oklahoma! That's about 27 million more people living in states where it's legal, and over half of the population in the country now!

Because people won't know whether they have ebola or if it's just the side-effects of eating state fair food?
I don't have any memories of the food from the one time I was at the fair when I was 8, but I don't think the quality of the food stopped me from really enjoying the whole thing.
In other news, has anybody been paying attention to the recent protests in Hong Kong over the sham of a "democracy plan" Beijing is trying to force down their throats? They're apparently the hugest protests Hong Kong has had since it became Chinese and they're only going to get bigger. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-29430229

@Panda:
Cake donuts are far superior to glazed.
Why not have both in one??
-
RE: Random News Article Discussion II
The last Krispy Kreme I went to was in Dupont Circle. They had this neat glazing machine that they put your doughnuts through so you can watch them glaze. Do they have that at every Krispy Kreme? I don't know, but if I ever head that way again I'm definitely stopping by there for some classic glazed.
Oh hey I think I know what store you're talking about! I would pass by that whenever I took the bus to my summer job last year. Alas, I never got to stop by there because my job was further downtown. I hope it's still open…
-
RE: Random News Article Discussion II
I think they make powdered and cinnamon as well, unless I'm mixing them up with some other donut maker. That said, Dunkin Donuts' sour cream donut beats the one type of donut that Starbucks has, hands down.
EDIT: Oh whoops I was mixing them up with Entenmann's packaged donuts, although Krispy Kreme does have more than one type of donut flavor. I know there's this one local donut bakery somewhere in Northern Virginia from which my old high school got donuts that they would occasionally sell in the mornings for prom funding or something, and their old-fashioned donut is still the best I've EVER had.

So a cell phone video of Kajieme Powell being shot by the police came out. Not posting the video itself here because it's the filmed death (though from a few yards away) of someone not doing anything remotely threatening enough to be shot NINE FUCKING TIMES by the police. RE: Random News Article Discussion II
In less utterly draining and infuriating news, Rick Perry has been indicted of abusing his power by cutting off state funding to the DA's office to force her to step down over a DUI incident. At the very least that's one more Republican who lost what chance he had of winning 2016.

RE: Israeli, Egyptian, and Palestinian conflict over Gaza strip
Isn't Alberta (where Harper's from) basically the Texas of Canada? What with all the oil, cowboy hats, and more right-of-center politics? I mean I assume the politicians aren't as insane as the Texas GOP and that they have universal healthcare with the rest of Canada, but it basically sounds like the closest thing to Texas in Canada.

RE: Recession Revolutions Thread Part III: Ukraine, Venezuela, Thailand
@Monkey:
Meanwhile in the US there's this bizarre otherworldly calm temporarily settling over things where our politicians are united in yelling about Russians and not eachother. It's beautiful. Like a snowball in July.
Even better, that weird fetish some Republicans had with Putin for his perceived strength and manliness and shirtless chest is permanently out of style now that he's indirectly killed 300 people (one of them being an American).

Because I'm curious what do you think of when you think of Washington D.C. and to a lesser extent, Maryland?
Since I know Maryland isn't as popular as the Nation's Capital.
I know this is a late reply but wow, someone else here's from Maryland? And close enough to be considered DC as well?? I hope you don't mind me asking, but inside the beltway or outside of it? $$MOCO4LYFE$$

I want to make a horrible joke about how the American electorate has a way of shutting down the GOP's chances of ever holding high political office again in its current state whenever the candidate is a legitimate awful human being, but we still have Ted Cruz…

RE: How was your Day 2 (general chat)
I think some Minnesotan I know from real life was talking about how it was mandatory over there for them to know how to drive in very inclement weather (such as at least several inches of snow and frozen roads). Also I looked up what a skidpad actually is and I guess it's more about trying cars out on various road conditions without worrying about harming other drivers. I think they have those in the US but I doubt anybody really uses them that often.

RE: How was your Day 2 (general chat)
Today I graduated from high school as a covaledictorian, and had a very nice graduation party with my family and friends tonight. So yeah, today was pretty fantastic.
On another note, I still can't really believe I'm going to college in the fall.

Just finished my last exam of high school. It feels really surreal being done with everything, but now I'M FREE!1 (until college starts in the fall)

RE: The users who read, but rarely post
I honestly just tend to read the threads in the General Discussion (and occasionally the Media/Other Anime & Manga) sections of the forums, because I completely dropped off with reading One Piece a year and a half ago and never really felt like catching up. There are honestly a lot of really smart people posting in really interesting topics in this section (like I was basically using the Revolutions thread as my main news source on the Arab Spring for a while), but I usually take such a long time to write my posts (perfectionism, wanting to sound intelligent) that I end up not posting anything most of the time.

RE: How Much Do Europeans Actually Know About America Thread
My grandfather grew up in Cape Ann so our family has a house there that we all go up to during different parts of the summer (usually August). I absolutely love how quaint and interesting the town of Rockport is, I have so many good memories from the fantastic ice cream/italian slushes and how much amazing seaglass and stuff you could find walking along one of those beaches. Gloucester's a little grittier due to its recovering from deindustrialization, but it's still a pretty great town and there's no shortage of awesome restaurants.
In fact I think you should add ice cream to the list of things that the Northeast absolutely owns at, just in terms of the fact that kiddie size automatically replaces "small" size by default unless it's big enough that you need a half-kiddie size.
