Popping in to say I voted for Ben Jealous even though i have a feeling Larry Hogan is going to continue being a lot like Hulk Hogan tonight: surprisingly popular, crushing the competition, not supporting organized labor, and kind of racist. Also voted for Marc Elrich for MoCo executive because we really don't need more rapid unsustainable development that will just make traffic worse and housing costs more expensive.

They only work 50% of the time or something though. So yeah I'll probably end up dead if I'm in DC and nuclear war breaks out.

"Your party lacks a clear message and ideals and is only known for being opposed to Trump"
"Okay let's give up what we consider a fundamental right and a core principle of the party to muddy the waters even more! Also we don't care that the women vote is why we still exist in the first place. Gotta chase that "WWC" vote!"
Honestly even the people who supported Bernie in the primary that I know (which includes a fair number of women/nb people, as well as myself) seem pretty appalled by this. Just because they don't think certain social issues are what every campaign should be built on doesn't mean that they support abandoning progressive stances on those issues, especially something that's as tied to economic justice as access to abortion. Occasional de-emphasis and complete abandonment of principles are not the same thing.
I think it's more like this:
Economic leftists: "Having a strong message on economic equity and social democratic policies is going to get more voters than Identity Politics messaging."
Social liberals: "We need to stick to socially liberal values and we can't abandon marginalized people to chase after this mythical White Working Class voter block."
DNC: "Sticking to two principles is hard, so how about we abandon all of them?"
Leftists & Liberals: "Wait no that's not what we m-"
DNC: "TOO BAD, YOU BETTER DEAL WITH IT"–- Update From New Post Merge ---
We all know the real reason for Islamaphobia in the West. It's because Muslims blow themselves up and kill in the name of Allah.

Marvel is the only company that is despised by both the alt right and the loony left.
I dunno, turning Captain America into a Nazi should be seen as awful by basically everyone.
Also ruining Marvel vs Capcom by being involved with it and making it serious. -

@S.C.:
Well, goodbye health insurance. It was nice having you while it lasted.
Keep in mind they voted down the first repeal and replace bill 43-57. Nine GOP senators out of 52 voted against it, and it needed 60 votes to pass anyway.
McCain is absent from the NO column though, so what else is new.
-
RE: American Politics thread: No Nazis Allowed
gotta love the standing ovation all of them gave McCain as he voted to cement his legacy as the biggest hypocrite ever

RE: American Politics thread: No Nazis Allowed
Pressure? Portman isn't going to be running again for another six years and Heller was already going to be on his way out. Portman can talk about the opioid crisis in Ohio as much as he wants but the fact is that he's a goddamn coward for even entertaining the notion of screwing them over, much less embracing it. And McCain coming back to the floor just to do his old "words of concern" routine and then vote to take away health care for other people with cancer when he will never run for office again means that he's an unprincipled yes-man as well. The party is bad, but individuals who are still a part of the congressional GOP are also bad.
-
RE: American Politics thread: No Nazis Allowed
Meanwhile, Portman and Heller have caved and are voting to proceed on Obamacare repeal. Scumbags.

Or maybe having your message be based almost entirely on who the other guys are doesn't really do much to insure confidence in voters during presidential elections, or bring out voters who aren't that likely to turn out in midterm elections. Here's an article by someone I know personally who I wouldn't describe as a "lefty" in the slightest, who puts it in better words than I can. http://www.vanityfair.com/news/2017/07/how-the-democrats-fell-for-trumps-trap

RE: American Politics thread: No Nazis Allowed
McCain was such an upstanding citizen that he let his insane running mate run wild with the conspiracy theories instead of doing it himself.
My twitter feed is split between people who aren't sorry he's dying and people who won't speak ill of the terminally ill. I don't feel super comfortable mocking anyone's death unless they're at least Roger Ailes-levels of irredeemable, and I'm not convinced that he's THAT level of awful. And I'm not sure how much I trust that Rolling Stone article about him in 2008 that claimed he was a huge fuckup during the war, since politifact debunked some of the details in that piece (& others like it).

In that New York Times interview Robby mentioned, he also said this about Robert Mueller:
Asked if Mr. Mueller’s investigation would cross a red line if it expanded to look at his family’s finances beyond any relationship to Russia, Mr. Trump said, “I would say yes.” He would not say what he would do about it. “I think that’s a violation. Look, this is about Russia.”
Guess what happens the next day.

RE: Steven Universe
Yeah I (and a whole bunch of other fans) were a little quick to judge to be honest. I think Rebecca and Lamar's apologies were both really genuine and empathetic, and it's exactly what I'd hope for from people making a show about empathy and learning from mistakes.
The rest of the artbook looks amazing TBH so I'm looking forward to getting it myself (hopefully the newer print of it).
-
RE: Steven Universe
"Can't read :(" is what really makes it feel like… a joke tbh. Even disregarding the question of whether the design crosses over from "problematic" to "holy hell what is wrong with you?", how did nobody stop to think that this might make more people upset than usual or that it shouldn't be in a kids book in 2017??
-
RE: Steven Universe
So there's concept art for a scrapped character in the artbook and uh…. I'm not sure if there's a word to describe it besides "racist".

Small victories.
Local government is where a lot of the policy is actually made, so it's really good to hear this. It's especially nice that they're from outside of electoral politics but still qualified on the issues.
-
RE: American Politics thread: No Nazis Allowed
Is that even a question? The former means there's less of a chance for Trump to start WWIII to improve his poll numbers.

@CCC:
And wtf Japan! Guess you don't need an Abrahamic religion to fuck things up for women.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abortion_in_Japan
Apparently there are enough exceptions to the law (including rape, economic/physical endangerment) to make it widely practiced. It's also widely accepted by women but Japan being legislatively inert as a country means legalization is unlikely. Still de facto less awful than a lot of states in the south, and much better than Chile… -
RE: American Politics thread: No Nazis Allowed
A tool-assisted one at that, given that GOP members like Paul Ryan and John McCain either support him to ridiculous lengths or don't offer more than token criticism of him.
-
RE: American Politics thread: No Nazis Allowed
Senators make and vote on laws, so I'd say being a senator is a significant deal. His opponent in '08 was/is also a senator.
The primary between Clinton and Obama was also vey close in a way that Clinton vs Sanders never was, so Hillary being a woman didn't have much to do with Obama nominee and nothing to do with him winning vs McCain.
The main reason he got elected was because the GOP was toxic after 8 years of Bush and the world economy crashing under his watch, as well as people being scared of McCain dying and Palin ending up president. Promising health care reform also helped a lot.

RE: American Politics thread: No Nazis Allowed
A history of domestic violence is actually a really good indicator that someone will end up committing a mass shooting. https://www.vox.com/identities/2017/1/10/14213164/mass-shooters-gun-violence-domestic-violence
I heavily disagree with Bernie over his opposition to gun control and to an extent he shares responsibility as well for all of the gun deaths in this country, but saying that being a hardcore Bernie supporter and shooting a bunch of people are linked is kind of a stretch.

@Monkey:
Well if there's got to be bullets sprayed into a crowd, better it be legislators who prevented anything happening the last nine times bullets were sprayed into a crowd, as opposed to another crowd of first graders they didn't do anything over.
Don't give a shit if this is in poor taste. Bite me.
I wouldn't personally say that but I know where you're coming from (specifically about you being a substitute teacher in SW CT elementary schools, and also because I have relatives there with a 7-year-old kid) and don't disagree. Still glad nobody besides the shooter has died though.

RE: American Politics thread: No Nazis Allowed
The fact that people didn't vote either way doesn't necessarily mean that they agree with or are neutral on Trump's positions, it just means that they were idiots.
It could also mean that restrictive voter ID laws discouraged JUST ENOUGH voters to let the GOP win. Or that people weren't super enthused about the election, or believe that America was already great for them.
The people who didn't vote just to be edgy are dumb and I hate them too, but calling people idiots for not voting unfortunately doesn't make them more likely to vote for you much of the time.

More in the series of "people who voted for Trump pay for it later," this day it's North Carolina. I'm wondering if they were included in the latest approval rating?
Trump Shafts North Carolina After Hurricane Matthew Relief RequestI saw some great people on twitter saying "haha serves you trump voters right, you deserve [to have your life ruined or taken away for voting differently]", ignoring that
A. A little under half of North Carolina voted for Clinton
B. Most of the people impacted by this are poor, Black, and voted for Clinton, and
C. Saying that someone deserves to die because of how they voted is unbelievably cruel and fucked up and people who then turn around and criticize TrumpCare after saying stuff like that should get swirlied for being a bunch of hypocrites. -

In non-shit news, the Senate blocks a move to overturn an Obama-era methane drilling regulation by 51-49. McCain, Graham, and Collins actually briefly pretended to have integrity!

RE: American Politics thread: No Nazis Allowed
Something's gotta break… I feel like I'm screaming into a void because it seems like nothing short of a revolution or nuclear war is going to end Trump's presidency now that the GOP can break what remains of our democracy to hold onto power forever.
-
RE: American Politics thread: No Nazis Allowed
I give it about a week after the replacement is confirmed for the investigation to be closed, and two weeks for Clinton's reinvestigation to be reopened. I think it will be more likely that Trump is voted out of office in 2020 than for enough Democrats to take over Congress and actually impeach him.
-
RE: American Politics thread: No Nazis Allowed
After screwing up Hillary's campaign because of a false notion of "impartiality" that doesn't even hold up in APForums debates, THIS is the thanks he gets from Trump?
I'm still super pessimistic about anything coming of this until 2018 at the earliest.

RE: American Politics thread: No Nazis Allowed
@Nancy:.@NancyPelosi "Someone asked me, 'Why dont you stop them?' B/c we want them to define themselves …They will walk this plank for nothing"
I think this came across as sounding like "we'll LET the Republicans pass a bill that devastates millions of lives and a sector of our economy worth 10% of our GDP, and that's good because we can use that chaos to our political advantage and help us take back the House in 2018". Basically, relying on the "let's let the GOP be as cartoonishly evil as possible so that people will decide not to vote for them" strategy, which hasn't had the best track record. Of course, she couldn't do anything to actually stop it without being complicit in making health care worse for Americans, but I could see how the phrasing would seem incredibly cynical to a lot of people.

RE: Random News Article Discussion II
Oh god I just remembered that my sixth grade English teacher made us write a letter from FDR to the nation justifying the Japanese/Japanese-American internment camps (in 2007, by which point almost everybody acknowledged they were unjustifiable)… not surprising since she was a hardcore republican who used a study of MLK's "I Have A Dream" speech to rant about then-primary candidate Obama's "generic" message of "hope and change".
Makes me wonder how many times teachers have regularly made impressionable students do tone-deaf/wildly offensive assignments like that and we just haven't heard about it.

Since I've been following the Alex Jones/Chobani thing, and I think this topic was brought up when I posted updates, I found a story on my feed confirming Alex Jones has lost primary custody of this children.
That's just what they want you to think. The idea that Alex Jones could have kids, let alone raise them as a father, has more holes in it than Swiss cheese.

RE: Random News Article Discussion II
Personally I think that a lot of Bernie's ideas, such as those about single-payer and free- or reduced-tuition public university, are at least part of an effective future message for the Democratic Party even if he isn't necessarily one himself. On the other hand, Sanders' (and especially many of his supporters') general attitudes (resistance to compromise, fighting with people on your side) being adopted by the Democrats would be absolutely terrible for the party. And don't say that Bernie would have won - the election would have been like McGovern all over again.
That said, figuring out a way to get that sizable chunk of people who just stayed home excited enough to vote in elections is super important, and for some areas it might involve tweaking messaging to appeal to working-class Americans (which can and does include POC too!!!) with low-skill jobs. And it certainly shouldn't involve people going and implying "yeah, you DESERVE to die from lack of health insurance because of your uninformed political opinion" like I've seen too many people do.
