Not like the folks doing Toonami are even getting paid. They need every penny they can get from ads.

It's not Toonami, FUNimation themselves edit the openings.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
I'm really ticked off at how spoilerific the new theme song is. Started watching the filler episodes with my girlfriend and now she knows all of the people we'll see return in Impel down and marineford, and that they'll all be going there after impel down.
Not to take Toei's side here, but didn't you already know about that opening? Why not skip it for her? I mean dude if I was watching through the whole thing with someone that knew nothing in order, I'd be skipping through things like Opening 3 without a second thought.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Not a fan of how that was worded…It seems like they believed the original's intent was to directly spell it out instead of knowing Oda intentionally worded it that way on purpose so that it could conceivably make sense either way, but comes across as much more clear when you find out the truth.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
i still think they should have waited until this summer to release pirate warriors 3 so it can have the true ending and Luffy new "power up". I also think funimation should start dubbing the One Piece games since most of the main people of the series have dubbed voices now.
It'd be nice but it's not up to them unfortunately.

Collection 14 ends at Episode 348. The Voyages contain half as many episodes as the Collections but are released more frequently. Latest Voyage release ends at 421.

Agreed on Colleen as superior. I don't think I've ever heard that raspiness claim, though; don't think it's true.
It's true, Colleen's said it a few times in commentaries and stuff. One time in particular I remember hearing it is her On the Boat segment.

I just realized until now that Doflamingo shares the same voice as Jellal while Luffy and Erza have the same voice actress. If anyone of you are apart of the Fairy Tail fandom you would know that Jellal and Erza have a history together and are hinted to be romantically attracted to one another. It will make Doffy and Luffy's confrontation with each other during the Dressrosa arc kind of ironic.
It's not hinted.
Actually the better place for this thread is tumblr
Also this.

RE: Funi TV Discussion (Saturday Night/Sunday Morning 1:00 a.m., USA Toonami)
One Piece is never going to catch 'mainstream audience' attention in America. The time has long since come and passed. It costs Toonami money just to air it once a week, nevermind 2-3 times. Also Toonami only airs on Saturdays, One Piece airing on Adult Swim is out of the question especially since OP is not nearly as big as the MacFarlane shows. At least they gave it a chance there, however brief it was though.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Not saying I felt that way instantly after the Season ended but you raise a fair point! For me at least it could very well be overthinking a few things at points. Though I did feel certain things in Film Z's direction let me down a bit.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
I originally thought I was the only one that felt this way soon after Season 5 wrapped up. The actors are obviously still great, but it felt really apparent to me that Mike somehow managed to bring out the best in the cast under his direction.
The actual VAs have discussed how they have a special chemistry with him too so I felt it added a bit more weight to that theory personally. Granted I say this as someone that's pretty far behind on the releases.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
You're assuming that's even possible. We're currently over 300 episodes behind the Japanese, with new episodes coming out each week.
I'm not saying it's impossible, but even in the unlikely chance that were to happen, it's still years away.
Nah, they'll definitely catch up at some point. Josh himself said as much in one of the OPP episodes. It's just that at the rate we're going at now that'll be about 5 years. And of course "catch up" wouldn't mean them literally being at the precise episode count that the Japanese are at for their weekly releases or even DVD/Blu-ray sets, but as close as they'd be allowed to go like in Fairy Tail (which is about 1 or 2 sets behind right now).
-
RE: Do you listen to any of the One Piece Character songs?
The character songs have never been translated into English, with the exception of just one track.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Also, an option that people never talk about- why doesn't the anime just go on break for two months a year like American shows? That'd be fine by me. Will give them more time to make better quality stuff, and won't have any filler crap.
Truth is Japanese TV doesn't work like that. Toei pays for that timeslot and it's clear they don't want to waste it. Something similar happened to Fairy Tail but that seemed to be the exception to the rule, plus that series isn't as big a juggarnaut as OP is needless to say so the impact wasn't nearly as big as it'd be if that happened to OP.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Yes, to dub. FUNi's never announced any plans for sub-only One Piece.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
You don't have to apologize for suggesting it. This is a discussion forum designed for such things. There just isn't really any reason to believe that funimation is going to stop dubbing anytime soon, especially when there was talk of broadcast dubs and them wanting to catch up to the Japanese.
Not to mention Josh stating on the Podcast at least twice that talks are underway to see if they can get the licenses to the other movies, and the odds of the two recent Specials that were simulcast being dubbed (both of which were also post-timeskip) were very likely. It's been made abundantly clear that the audience is there and it'll be ok.
Heck, as Elan_Morin points out, Season 3's Skypeia was a rather unpopular arc in the grand scheme of things (maybe even more than FI), and most of the arc was released dubbed (and even uncut) years before the DVD release. At least for Fishman Island it has the advantage of coasting on the hype of the first post-timeskip dub material since Film Z's release.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
And with all the times it's said it'd be way too noticeable. I joke but she'll be able to manage it, she handled Skypeia and Enies Lobby well.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Yeah i awaiting for Voyage 3 to see how colleen does Luffys reaction to finding out that Ace is going to be executed in the newpaper
I'm waiting for FUNi to resort to utilizing archival recordings of Colleen saying "ACE!!!!" over the course of later Season 7 to cut back on recording time

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Duval' voice changes way too much in those first five episodes. He goes from gravely when introduced to no gravel to accent to… There's just no consistency. Hopefully he sticks with the pretty it voice for the second half of this set.
Caime sounds perfect, and I had no idea was Pappagu sounded like, so this voice is cool. Great to hear Hatchi sounds the same.
Switching to accent at least is something that is meant to happen. As for the gravel, wasn't Alvida a somewhat similar situation anyway? I haven't heard the voice yet though so you'd know more than I do.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Marathoner the duval part of the arc. So much fun to watch. Great comedy, better animation that usual, and good fun.
To justify the elite subscription, I stared watching seraph. Is that studio bones? My god. The music, animation, directing. Everything is beautiful. I read the manga for hat, and it way way pales in comparison. Wish one piece wasn't toei.
To be fair a long-running series like One Piece would never have a chance of consistently great/good animation, though. No matter what the studio.

RE: So why aren't there any new films coming out?
They certainly aren't low on budget, I'd bet. After Strong World they promised a new film every two years, which hasn't happened so far. The film came out in 2009, while Z came out in 2012 and since then not even a tidbit of news for the next film. Why? Meanwhile Naruto had four films released since the end of 2008 with the fifth coming out later this year.
They never promised anything. Oda just said he thinks it'd be best to release every two years in an interview.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
With FUNimation, yeah it bombed. They released 4 sets and dropped it. It's also bombed to a lesser extent in Japan, with it clearly not living up to the push Shonen Jump was giving it for a few years.

RE: Fairy Tail Discussion III
Fairy Tits would be a pretty cool manga title

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
1.One Piece is one of the series they're considering possibly pursuing a simulcast dub, but nothing's necessarily in negotiations at this point. It's been said they also want to see if the fan demand is strong enough to justify such a thing.
2. I have no idea but apparently it was really funny.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
I think FUNimation getting the rights is a no-brainer. There's really no other company that has a chance at landing that series, the real question is where it can possibly air.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
We'll most likely never know until FUNi officially announces those following seasons themselves, though at this point it's very hard for me to believe FUNimation would deviate from this at all, it seems about right.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Great news on the OPP front! Can't think of someone specifically that you guys won't be dealing with but I'll keep it in mind if that changes.
And wow, I'm really liking Season 7's release date and boxart. Though I do miss when they were a bit more creative…

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
I'm sure the Japanese text has been replaced in the past, though for some reason they stopped or something. When I first started watching the dub there was definitely English text in certain places, like on the maps for Alabasta and such, and then all of a sudden they stopped translating it all.
No, that was originally in English text in the Japanese version as well. OP's just always been one of those series with a lot of English text used throughout, but FUNi's never changed any of the text to English until just now on the DVDs. Only time they got into that was when the original Toonami 2007 dub was on.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
He's saying among the fanbase, who's the popular VA people normally wish for when Caesar is dubbed. There's not been any official news on the broadcast dub happening or votings for character's VAs.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Wow check out those negative naysayers, i hope the positive tweets shine through, i do agree with them that Fairy Tail needs a broadcast dub as well, it would take less than a year for it to catch up
FT's so much closer I wouldn't see the point of skipping ahead though, unless you mean doing broadcast dubs once the home video releases catch up to the current Japanese episodes.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
It's annoying how they do everything through Twitter. Not everyone has a Twitter.
Why not send an email in that case? I doubt it would hurt.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
You could send a message to Josh Kocurek about it and use the hashtag.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Speeding up thw production to close the gap. I just wonder if that means more episodes per voyage, rather than more dvd sets.
More sets. Increasing the number of episodes for every Voyage at this point wouldn't make any sense.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Well then lets hope they do start the broadcast dub then, so they can start releasing the dvds at a quicker pace
Don't just hope if you want it, let Josh know! He said this can happen if people show interest in it, and like Zach said the #OPBroadcast hashtag is a nice way for FUNi to keep track of that.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Maron- are you sure he said they'd speed up the DVDs releases to close the gap? I just listened to that segment again and didn't hear it.
Yep, check out 1:34:00.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Thanks! Was looking. For this once I heard the news. Seems accurate- 12 episodes per set for six sets. That should be good and steady. Can't wait for the Sabaody episodes, and oddly enough, I'm excited for the crew whereabout episodes.
Though we know when they say summer it usually means August. Not a big deal to have a bit of a break between seasons, but I sure would like for voyage four to come early. I think you guys are being a little too hopeful by saying June.
As far as broadcasting goes, let's talk about some of the plus and minuses of it.
+episodes years before we would've seen them; stuff in the current arc.
+possibily a faster way to catch up, assuming the DVDs aren't slowed down dramatically.-possible voice acting inconsistencies; starting in the middle of the arc means less consistency when the DVDs finally catch up to the arc and have to pull those actors back
-possibly slowing down the DVDs releases.Josh actually said getting this would mean an acceleration for everything (including DVD release) to close the gap. So I assume we'd be going back to the Season 2 Voyage release days of constant OP if we can convince him to go for this.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Yeah, Oda was Executive Producer of Film Z. However as you pointed out neither have any place in the world of the series.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Most likely yeah. I'd be surprised if any VAs get announced come Monday though, but I'd love to be wrong.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
I don't know. Both those comments seem kind of like a stretch. The podcast commentary isn't entirely definitive either, but at least they suggest some knowledge of the upcoming arcs. Joel's comment there doesn't seem like a reference to any particular moment in One Piece and Brina's just seems like a general observation.
I'll take anything I see until an official announcement with a grain of salt, but I'll remain cautiously optimistic for now.
That's fine, no one's suggesting you should believe something without an official announcement, it's just FUNi has shown us similar hints in the past regarding future seasons prior to announcements as well. So some folks are used to this kind of thing but it makes total sense to not believe anything.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Who said it hasn't been licensed or that they're not already recording? They were in Season 6 for a long time before they officially announced it, or even when Josh said it was a sure thing.
-
RE: Opening 17: "Wake Up!", January 19th
Would't see the point if they were to switch in just a couple months, especially since they replaced scenes once already. If we're talking late Spring then maybe.
-
RE: Water 7 Arc- Toonami Talkback
Rocky, how does the show's existence on TV hurt you more than it not being there at all?
-
RE: Water 7 Arc- Toonami Talkback
Are you guys talking about DeMarco here?

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
I imagine he pays some attention to the credits and would notice one of the main voices as another character. By maybe not. Would be good to give the straw hats some more work while they get time off from one piece.
He's said before that he typically skips the openings though, with Towards the Light being the exception. Reasons he cited are easily applicable to the endings as well, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if he just sat through 'em just once or twice each at the most and wasn't trying to remember all the Japanese SH cast names. Hope he does in any case, as well as for the fake SH.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Do you guys think they'll start casting the straw hats in other roles after sabaody like the Japanese did?
I think if Mike knows the Japanese did this and for which characters it would lead to the best chance of it being applied to the same ones as a sorta in-joke. Wouldn't be surprised at all if he just didn't know otherwise from simply watching the subbed episodes.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Ugh…now I'm just gonna be disappointed when it doesn't happen. Why'd you have to get that awesome thought in my head?
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
I don't think there's any chance of them ever considering skipping that many episodes. It just doesn't make any sense.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion III (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
Wait a minute will we get a remix of the English version or the Japanese version, hopefully the English
We're not getting dubbed songs anymore, it's the original Japanese.
It's almost certainly the Japanese version. The remix has different instrumentation. They would need the karaoke version of the opening to rerecord it in English and Avex has not been giving those up. That they didn't do that with the Straw Hats version during Enies Lobby says that it isn't likely here, either.
What's funny is the We Are Straw Hat version had the English Gold Roger and Narrator prologue replacing the Japanese so FUNi actually got to get the instrumental for that remix, but still knew they couldn't actually adapt it. I'm guessing it'll be similar when we get to the dialogue in the middle of Wake Up.

At least the art will be nice to look at…
