RE: Chapter 1,047: The Sky Over the Capital
@Daz:
I'd friggin loved to have an Last Ditch Straw Hat Crew effort to stall Kaidou for time, any time, until Luffy could recover, because they trust him to recover that much. It could double as a showcase for their determination and skills and build up the tension - Usopp does a cool thing to inconvenience Kaidou, Kaidou breaks free and whacks Usopp aside, rinse and repeat - the crew gets to go all out, Kaidou gets to look fearsome. Like theres been a long conga line of people who've dealt blows to Kaidou at this point, some of thos might as well have come from the straw hats, and if Momo can bite Kaidou and make him yelp we could have gotten Monster Chopper holding onto Kaidous tail for 5 seconds or something like that. As seen with Enel, Moriah/Oars, Kuma or even Arlong its not like the crew won't fight a big bad if Luffy is indisposed.
Yeah I do like to partake in power discussions from time to time (even thought it’s all arbitrary enough so that the story fits to what Oda wants) and it wouldn’t seem too crazy that the strawhats could delay Kaido for a chapter or 2. Heck you could even have a cool ass moment where Luffy redirects a fatal blow Ala Luffy vs Doflamingo

RE: 1015: ''Straw Hat Luffy - The Man Who Will Become the Pirate King''
I also think it’s easy to just look on the bright side of pacing, and ignore the chance that if the anime went season we’d have things missing from the manga like how MHA or Promised never land did

RE: American Politics: A Brand New Day
As one of the younger veterans on this board, I can say that the 27 and under leftist crowd are really disillusioned with Biden and his “nothing will fundamentally change” video clip is one a lot of people latch onto. The “we will address major concerns, later, just vote” atttitide many older democrats have tried to use seems to be
wearing thing. A lot of people are side-eyeing the lack of major change done at any time during Obama’s large surplus which appears to have been either because the changes were too radical (free health care etc) or because of a one sided desire for negotiation which republicans have been even less willing to do now (though it seems democrats are still willing to compromise against themselves to win the much rarer white socially conservative swing voter aged 50). The falling out of the infrastructure bills, the quote frank “technically correct” stimulus checks (1400+600), the minimum wage lifting failing (because of inflation worries, guess that didn’t matter eh?) and almost everything promised or mentioned would be a sticking point by Allies who would “push Biden left” have gone up in smoke and are being tabled back for later, for once we win more seats in the senate/house Especially In contrast to how quickly things mobilize when republican agendas are on the table or if not republican agendas themselves than imperialist type motions like warfare and supporting apartheid regimes .I think there’s a lot of young people who see voting as increasing a less meaningful institution and are looking for other ways to help communities vs donating a ton of money to congresspeople, even those like AOC, Ilhan and others. The lack of refusal to condemn Israel was a huge sticking point for AOC’ status as becoming the next Nancy pelosi. I don’t necessarily agree there myself but Nancy pelosi was a lot more of someone who offered up more radical economic policies back in her day.
Regardless I think a lot of young Americans need something big to promise change, a policy of any medium import to regain some faith in the democrats to serve even loosely in their better interests. -
RE: Chapter 1,046: Raizo
I would agree but the shoes dont fit at all
@Gol:
My crackpot theory is, the BM pirates will be overwhelmed, Pudding frees the Vinsmoke siblings and they finish of the intruders, this can only happen if Katakuri is still out of order and can't participate in any fights. But my gut feeling is pointing towards it being the Vinsmoke siblings for the rescue of their other two brothers.

RE: How Would You Write One Piece Differently/How Would you have wanted it.
I would maybe split Dresserossa into two slightly more distinct halves so things could be focused a little better, but otherwise I wouldn't change much. The excesses and million "pointless" characters are what give the series scope and life. Yeah they're slowing things week to week a bit, but year to year they're barely denting the pace, they're just making the overall world bigger and more vibrant. They are what Oda brings to the table.
The one big actual change I'd make is let a few earlier characters stay dead is the main thing. Its okay to cheat and have happy endings sometimes… it's fine that Pell cheated death, he's a hero and earned it. But it's not fine that then Pagaya and Franky family and sabondy slave and Bellamy and Hach iand Mr. 2 and... you can't cheat it EVERY time to the point you never believe any of them. I would LOVE to believe that Monet and Vergo and Pedro are actually dead and have felt emotion in their moments, instead I'm just checking a calender and wondering if they'll pass the record set by Mr. 9 and Bellamy.
Barring that just don't do the fake outs so much. Them collapsing in a bloody defeated heap after giving their all is enough, they don't have to be fake dead for the drama.
The one other change I'd make isn't to the manga at all, it'd be to make the anime seasonal so that it doesn't have so much filler. Just expand on the fights and such.
You are a bad person and you should feel bad.
He's my favorite by a wide margin.
keeping some of these options dead is even worse than the fakeout in some cases.
Like for instance the franky family cliffhanger just didn't need to happen, bellamy is way more interesting in dressrosa etc

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 9 - Yamato vs. The World)
If Carrot's attention in WCI was mostly forced by popularity and an editor's influence, I can assume the same thing is true of Yamato in Wano.
A lot of their attention feels forced, as if Oda's just pushing them to appease the popularity poll. The entire chase for the bombs and Kazenbo especially feels like it was something Oda just forced on Yamato last minute to keep giving them panel time. It just ended with Yamato going in a complete circle and ending up back with Momo. Seems to me like Brook and Robin were originally gonna coincidentally end up down there and deal with the problem until BM comes crashing down.
But sure, I guess Yamato could pop a squat and the fans would still say "Oda would never do that with a side character. Obvious strawhat."
Oda did have it mentioned Yamato froze the bombs which prevented a premature explosion just before big mom was defeated

RE: Chapter 1,045: Next Level
I was rereading volumes 31 and 32 last night, and I found it curious that in Viz's translation, Enel tells Luffy; You're just a Paramythia freak.
Which sounds like a combination between 'Paramecia and Mythological', which is exactly what Luffy is nowadays.
Its obviously a mistranslation, and I hope Oda never sees it cause he'll run straight into retconing it for his benefit
Besides it seeming more natural because we saw paramecium first, paramythia makes more sense translationally because it's meant to invoke that comparison than it is to an amoeba or the thing its closest too, Stephen the current translator even mentioned it on the last podcast

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 9 - Yamato vs. The World)
Carrot and Yamato fight for the last spot @Zik:
Time to shine against who though?
Only Kaido is really left. There's like one or two CP0 agents around to fail at their jobs. All the WG agents are getting wrecked by Zunesha.
So unless the Big Mom pirates are really going to show and fight after Big Mom already got booted off the island what will this time to shine entail?
Cuz I mean Yamato is still around to fight a strong oppoenet too.

RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
Ah, yeah, my D = hat =rising sun theory.
I still like it, but since they published it as I wrote it, I wonder… lolThen again...I wrote Nika Nika Fruit and they ran that so... haha
I feel oda has had this idea about the sun for a long time, at least since skypiea, but I'm not sure nika was fleshed out so soon, oda could have built the skeleton and then did a lot of the adding of muscles and tendons later on like even post timeskip, but there was definitely room for something. Similiar to germa, idk if sanji being a vinsmoke was the plan since baratie, or even skypiea but oda made prince allusions and left room in case he wanted to go there, and go there he did
-
RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
Fruit doesn't matter.
Whatever purpose it was stolen for (assuming it was) ((it probably was)) Luffy effed it all up.
Still doesn't matter that he ate it. What he did with it matters…now. Not when he was a kid.
I think that might be what's influencing a subset of this notion.
That once Luffy ate the fruit, he became special.
What made Luffy special, is that without any outside influence, his bold desire was to do exactly what Roger wanted to do. And not only that, for a little squirt, he had the conviction to carry it out.
I think me and several others are in agreement, he couldn’t be joyboy without the fruit, and once he ate it his work ethic / attitude made him becoming the pirate king almost inevitable. Him being the reincarnation of joyboy, or being possessed by him is a lot more controversial and idea because it makes it look like no matter what ot would have happened, even if he didn’t become a pirate at all

RE: Chapter 1,043: Let's Face Death Together!!!
Yeah that’s it’s dropping immediately the week after 1043 has me thinking it was waiting for this moment. The heavy use of drums and luffys theme. There’s way too much smoke for this to be Luffy gets up after 1010. And lest we forget, toei is extremely literal with titles so I doubt this is a misdirect
-
RE: Chapter 1,043: Let's Face Death Together!!!
Something bothering me:
Is this really the fruit awakening. Yeah, I know, Luffy is surrounded by goo and steaming out. Most likely, it's the fruit awakening.
But then… does it mean anyone with the Gomu Gomu can be Joyboy? It feels... weird.
Earlier in the arc, we saw Luffy talking telepathically when he was about to drown. Again, at the step of death, he showed a power that is clearly not DF-related (he was underwater, even!)
More important, the people of D die smiling. Either just before death (Roger, Saul), or upon death (Ace, who was actually crying just before). And here, we see Luffy not smiling until Joyboy "takes over". Maybe every D that dies is potentially Joyboy, but only Luffy has managed to somehow summon it.
Lastly, if the fruit is the key, then Luffy was predestined to be Joyboy. But it isn't, then Luffy earned to be Joyboy. The story changes completely.
So, is this really the fruit?
Or am I just in denial?
! If it's not the fruit, then the "transformation" could actually be a certain Swamp man that came with Momo and Luffy and brought the Heart Pirates with them may have been watching the fight, saw Luffy being ambushed and is now trying to wake him up.
I mean Luffy ate the fruit by accident. As many have surmised shanks may have stolen the fruit to give to ace (hence why he was in such a small place in the East blue and left after the incident) so Luffy could have stolen destiny

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 9 - Yamato vs. The World)
Regarding luffys use of Yamao, o think it’ll be like that until Yamato finalizes themselves as a person seperate from Kozuki oden
-
RE: Chapter 1,033: Shimotsuki Kozaburo
Zoro’s "best friend” (親友) in the last panel probably refers to Kuina, not Luffy considering he has used the word 親友 only for Kuina in his life. BTW, Smoker described Zoro as Luffy's partner (相棒) and Roger called Rayleigh his "partner" as well.

RE: Chapter 1,032: Oden's Beloved Blade
Buggy tried to blow up a town. Django tried to kill an innocent woman just so his boss could make some money. Bon Kurei's actions in Alabasta when he impersonated the king sparked a civil war that led to countless deaths. Crocodile actively tried to kill main characters and also caused enormous suffering and he's getting the Vegeta treatment. Heck, his entire organization really was allowed to turn around. Gin? Hachi? Bellamy? CP9? Caribou? To a lesser degree Helmeppo and Fullbody?
Even Big Mom is probably going to get cleared up, and Enel is almost certainly coming back in some form.
Oda usually redeems his villains. And he has never to date killed them for their final fate. (Except maybe Vergo but explosions have never killed anyone and there's still a few years before he and Monet hit the current record.)
And with Kanjuro its especially easy. WIth his "death" he's now reborn and gets a fresh clean slate. Or amnesia.
Exactly. This is One Piece. That's punishment enough. His old dream and motivation is shattered, now he has to find a new one. And then he can make amends. That's how Oda usually handles his villains.
The only real exceptions have been the parent killers. Arlong was sent to jail and that was it. Hody was hyper aged. Vergo is still unseen. Basically everyone else has been allowed a redemption arc, and death has NEVER been the final solution.
Wapol is a weird case where he was redeemed and then went back to villany, no idea what's going on there.
Well you could consider oden a parent figure to the scabbards and Kanjuro complicit in his death
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Also huge difference between Nami, Usopp, Robin and Sanji “betraying” the crew and what Kanjuro did. There’s even a huge difference between him and Squard. I don’t think we’ll get confirmation he died but I think we won’t see him again after this arc

RE: One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced
It's both hilarious and impressive how casually you throw these details around. I bet that's a great party trick whenever someone starts to talk about movies .
Do we know that they really intend to go all the way? Not necessarily hitting every minor arc (I imagine they will skip Foxy ), but most of it?
I wonder what they will do if this isn't successful enough. Sure the brand alone will carry to some degree, but picture a GoT-style fiasco where they just have to drop the show for whatever reason.
Maybe the timeskip would be a fitting cutoff point if they have to, which would already cover what… 5-6 years of runtime?
You could definitely restructure things around and get rid of Foxy Arc but I feel it could actually be really well received in live action if they do a nice and tight kind of job of shooting it. Plus it’s a big carnivalesque kind of thing
-
RE: Chapter 1,031: Warrior of Science
Reasonable assumption, but he explicitly says he's doing it out of "obligation to straw hat", which is kinda weird.
Apoo’s plan is to take out the victor, he’s lying to Yamato about being on their side, when he wants drake to help him jump the winner for glory. If Luffy wins that means Apoo is gonna go after him

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 8 - Onigashima)

RE: Chapter 984: My Bible
Despite the numerous allies I don't doubt for a second that this is the arc where every Straw Hat will get a proper fight, and the enemies with the most exposition at the moment (in their ballpark) are the Flying Six. Their whole intro just gives me a strong Enies Lobby vibe, where new powerful foes were introduced last minute to round the matchups.
It's possible that not every Flying Six will fight a Straw Hat (maybe Robin fights Mont'dor or something), but I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that a lot of them will. As for the characters you mentioned:
Drake - I don't see him turn until the fights are almost over. I think it's even more likely that he has a skirmish with a member of the alliance before he does.
I think Drake is gonna slip under the radar until a moment he deems important enough to throw away his secret. Possibly this could tie into other sword members that also infiltrated Wano.
Marco - Way too powerful for a Flying Six. If he fights then he will fight a Calamity / Sweet Commander, but I assume he will be used for something else entirely. Something only he can do because of his ability to fly.
As someone else stated he's the Sabo of this arc, can see him playing the same role he did in marineford though where he bounces around the battlefield and gets into quite a few clashes.
Killer - As with Kidd, I believe his only purpose is to let Luffy & gang stand out among the Worst Generation. Whatever they do, whoever they fight, they will lose. And the Straw Hats will succeed where they failed. So yeah, maybe Killer gets fodderized by Sasaki or Who's Who to hype them up some more, but I'm not expecting a proper fight on panel.
I have no idea what happens to killer. I think it'd be cool if he and zoro teamed up to beat King but I feel that he will fight a single enemy though im not sure if it'll be Zoro / Sanji / Jimbei or even Kid / Law.
That depends on how oda wants to set up the big kaido fight and who else will fight against him before it predictably becomes a 1 vs 1 where only luffy is left able to fight.Regarding Kidd I strongly suspect this is gonna be the arc where he has the most spotlight so I dont think oda is gonna have him lose right away in a jobberesque fashion. If he's fighting one of the calamities he's going to win but if he fights alongside Luffy and Law versus Kaido I think there's a good chance he ends up the guy who does the second most amount of damage to him behind luffy and is the last one to fight besides him before it becomes a true one v one.
! The Scabbards - I didn't change my mind in this regard, they will mostly fight Orochi's forces because that's where their emotional link is. The only outliers are Neko and Inu in regards to Jack, I guess. But he's not a Flying Six.
Yeah this seems spot on, I think that it's most likely that they'll face off against Orochi and his forces with Kinemon being the one to end things once and for all.
Yamato - No idea to be honest. But he seems way too strong for them as well. I could see him being lectured by Kaido himself, maybe even chained up in preparation for an arranged marriage or something.
I have no idea what they're gonna do and I can see them fighting or not fighting, maybe they too join in on the early versus kaido portion of the fight or maybe they have their own enemy perhaps even smoothie idk.
All the other "minor" allies will fight fodder gifters and / or Numbers.
Yeah this will be everyone who gets a panel or two in a montage. No idea where everyone but the Strong Quartet ends up but I doubt any of the strawhats are stuck with 2 pages vs gifters / pleasures

RE: Next Straw Hat Crewmates (Vol. 7 - Wano)
I came here to see if Shift or anyone had noticed carrot's glomp and gone hmmmmmm like what I saw in reddit comments and i'm wondering if anyone else had those thoughts.
I feel like if if she was a part of the crew's attacks that might hold more weight but when I checked I had noticed that it was down. What did ya'll think of that, just a neat connection / allusion to WCI or something more? I've been gone for a few months but I still feel like she'll probably be affiliated with the fleet in some regards. -
RE: New MANGA Plus service from Shueisha (global, legal, simul, free, English releases)
A lot of scan preferring people have complained the official is too goofy with all the puns and stuff steven does, like there was one person who responded stephen adding a bird pun with big news morgans changes the depiction of his character because its something that wasmt in the raws. Ive also heard that sometimes they say the translation is too clinical compared to the scans, where it sounds like sheldon from the big bang theory throwing in fancy words to make the writing look smarter
I disagree with both of these but I can see why scanlation fans would see it as "not taking the story seripusly enough" or see it as a lack of respect akin to 4kids but to a lesser degree

RE: My Hero Academia II - A true Hero
I think beyond the hitting and how often it happened, the real abusive part was endeavor flexing his control on the family through intimidation and possibly threats, even if thats mostly what they stayed as that kind of stuff really messes with your mind. Stuff like having a sense of dread when ypur parent comes home, feeling kore co fortable when their gone, always feeling like you have to act a certain way etc. Stuff like that isnt easy to deal with by any means

@Yuugi's:
I'll laugh my ass off if Bakugou's hero name is Best Blast/Best Explosion. It just seems like such a hilarious nod to how much he hated being under Best Jeanist.
As for the Endeavor arc, I have my mixed feelings for personal reasons. I actually don't mind learning more about Endeavor because I have to wonder where he got this obsession with surpassing All Might from. Was he abused as a child, too? It'd be a nice thematic tie to show the repetition of trauma across generations. Endeavor is forced by his parents to strive to be the best and even seek out a Quirk Marriage. He tries to make it work for real but something eats away at him until he becomes neglecting of his family and Rei finally snaps. Either way, I do like seeing Endeavor grovel. Seeing such a brick wall of a personality crumble is really satisfying. Now, let's see how he puts himself back together.
Honesty its probably all might showing up. He returned to japan 10(?) years ago from the beginning of tbe seriesShoto is 16 in the beginning amd this could correspond to endeavor getting more brutal as all might gathered mkre fame and fortune so that'd be my best guess

RE: My Hero Academia II - A true Hero
@Count:
By the way, I just want to say that I really like the latest chapter diving into:
! superhero PR by having Mt. lady teach how important interviews and super moves are for self-advertising and mass communication. This is the type of stuff a series like My Hero Academia focusing on a superhero culture world can dive into as a way to stand out from other typical superhero stories. I wonder if Shoto and Bakugo's interview is building up to anything long-term like Bakugo getting kidnapped by the League of Villains.
! I actually wouldn't mind a whole short arc about this kind of thing like the Bakugo and Shoto remedial license exam, but it seems like it's being used as a shortcut to a second internship arc. If we're going that route, I just really REALLY hope that there will be interesting untapped superhero career worldbuilding aspects to this arc compared to the first only being a rescue mission gauntlet against criminals.
! And being better written than that first internship arc to begin with lol. Although I wonder if new internships can connect to the Paranormals, especially if Tokoyami interns for Hawks again and gets tied into that whole double agent plotline.I would actually REALLY like that. But I don't think Horikoshi is going to be able to resist making Deku 100% everything and become the most powerful character ever Naruto-style after how he ditched a perfectly good opportunity for a team-up in favor of 100% Deku + Eri in the Overhaul arc finale.
Not to mention that this manga doesn't really commit to any of its supposed consequences outside of All-Might's retirement and Shigaraki's rise to power, which are both obvious familiar shonen tropes. And I mention this because the only reason I can see Deku not being able to master One for All is because his body is too damaged to withstand it without help from someone like Eri. Which I don't see happening considering how early Horikoshi pulled that card so early in the story like I mentioned above.
! I would like this a lot, especially since I have always liked Kamui's design and it would be a neat way to make the first chapter feel like it was building up to something even if it wasn't planned that far ahead.
! One way to diminish the overpoweredness of the ability is if deku can only use 1 quirk at a time.
-
RE: My Hero Academia II - A true Hero
@Daz:
But with Deku Batman he would presumably develop those tools himself, to match his challenges. Like an Usopp. He would compensate for having no quirk through his tools and ingenuity. Here, said "tools" are gifted to him as internalized powerups, meaning that he now compensates for having no quirk…by having six quirks. You can't fit the "underdog relying on his wits" archetype onto him anymore, because he now, in his base form, has innate advantages beyond anyone else.
Ahhh yes Batman, the underdog protagonist with billions of dollars
