    • RE: Chapter 506 "Roger & Rayleigh" Discussion

      @Lifrit:

2 things i noticed about this statement was that he is still known as Gold Roger and not Gol D. Roger and that "22 years ago" can be used to mark a timeline as to how long its been since they have started. I don't know how it fits in the timeline just yet but i'm going to look back to see if it was ever mentioned before how long ago roger died.

When Luffy was about to get his head chopped off in Loguetown, Smoker mentioned "22 years ago" as well. So if that means anything, it hasn't been a year, which was already kind of evident.

    • RE: Chapter 492 "Iron Mask Duval" Discussion

      Great, another week of speculation!

About Duval looking for Brook: just because Brook happens to be the oldest member of the crew doesn't mean anything. Also, how could anyone know Brook is sailing with the Straw Hats? He's been missing for 50 years, and the entire crew is presumed dead. Plus he happens to have the appearance of a skeleton now.

As for who Duval might be…

I think several points are interesting: his size, his appearance, the length of time he's been searching for this Strawhat, and the familiarity between him and his gang. So this gets rid of anyone we've seen somewhat recently, and most of the villains they've fought. Also - if he's not a Merman (and I guess we can't really tell at the moment), then why is he here, around Fishman island and surrounded by a crew of mostly fishmen?

Since there's little to speculate with besides that, I think we can pretty much assume it's not someone we've met, or at least, not someone we really know. I'm hoping he has something to do with Chopper or Franky, who've lived on the Grand Line longer than most of the other Strawhats. He doesn't seem like someone who might have come from the East Blue, who hung around there for a while. But I only say that because I can't imagine someone like that coming from the East Blue, where anyone who wasn't a "normal human" was viewed with alarm and surprise. But....who knows.

I agree with CodedTech. What would it mean to have a crewmember join if, say, most of their journey is already over and there's only an island or two left before Raftel?

Oops, posted this in the wrong topic:

Wow, that thing behind Lola's pirate crew looked ominous. It would be pretty funny if they ended up stuck in another horrible situation right after escaping from one.

Also, all this talk about the Straw Hats inching closer to Mariejoa is making me excited for that arc. I wonder if this was partly what Oda was referring to when he said he has big things in store for the future?

And lastly, "______________ [name of any random minor character] will join!!" must be the CURSE OF ONE PIECE. Camie's totally gonna join guys, she'll fill the crucial role of designing Nami's clothes!!! /joke

    • RE: Theories That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread

I'm sorry, this is so dumb, but I'll post it anyway. I guess this thread is the one for stuff like this?

Caveat - I didn't go through all 700+ replies to this thread:

For a while, Ace's fate was unknown. Eventually, it becomes apparent Ace lost - though at the time we weren't sure if he was merely captured or was killed. I always felt strongly that Oda wasn't going to kill off Ace, because in terms of the storyline having Ace actually be dead didn't necessarily matter at that point. I also think the intention was to have everyone suspect the worst.

Anyway - you know the theory that when a DF user dies, the fruit that user ate will grow anew on that spot? (We know already there can't be more than one particular DF "at a given time" from the existence of the DF Encyclopedia and the SBS question in volume 48)

My theory that doesn't deserve its own thread:

      1. Well, now we know Ace is alive and is only being held prisoner by the WG.

      2. If the theory on how Devil Fruits work is accurate, then Ace's capture (and execution) would essentially ensure the WG has control of the Mera Mera Fruit.

      3. With the reader now comfortable with knowing Ace's fate, I think this is a perfect opportunity for Oda to capture people off-guard.

      4. The scenario: the Strawhats are facing off against another powerful opponent. Say, a marine. Name someone…...I don't know, Akainu or somebody.

He reveals he has a Devil Fruit -

      It's the Mera Mera Fruit.

Seeing as Aokiji (the blue pheasant) has the Ice logia, the fire logia might compliment someone like Akainu (the red dog)..?

That's my dumb theory, thanks for your time. 😕

Remember the time in arabasta arc when Zoro said :'' I don't know exactly what's keeping me on this ship, but i know there is something strange relating to me Luffy but i can't explain it or understand it. '' he said something like that…wth was he talking about?..i think he was talking to Chopper back then.

Zoro: That's a favor to ask if you're going to die.

Kuma: It seems now..If I do anything to Mugiwara, my honor would be at stake.

Sorry if this is totally dumb, but I just wanted to clear something up about this part. Right before dropping his swords, Zoro asked a specific favor of Kuma (offscreen), right? It's not clear yet what exactly it was, right? Or was this just some generic "warrior's promise" thing?

Oda was hesistant to talk about future plans, "Because you guys will get angry at me again.", referencing that famous incident. HOWEVER, he did say everyone there watching (who unlike you guys hasn't read 483) said that while Moria was defeated, we shouldn't forget about another Shichibukai who was on the island and everyone gasped. I'm guessing you guys already know this.

Random dumb thought: can I assume a lot of the people in the audience don't follow OP weekly in WSJ, but buy the tanks when they're released? Then they didn't know about Kuma being on the island to begin with, so that comment really would be a bit of a spoiler, right?

      Okay..

So basically, Kishimoto killed off Jiraiya because Naruto needs "to grow up" and mature, but…all this is gonna have to wait because he's not actually going to write any of this anytime soon.

Also, I guess in the world of Naruto a character can only grow if a mentor dies. So...Sakura needs to grow also - that means that's it for Tsunade, right? Aannnnd I'm guessing Kakashi's "huuuuuge" event (if it doesn't entail what rusashi mentioned) will be connected to that.

Hey Greg thanks for all the info about JUMP Festa. I'm not really that active on these forums, so I don't really know what THAT incident at the other JUMP Festa was. Could anyone enlighten me on this?

      http://apforums.net/showpost.php?p=745186&postcount=114

During the 2002 JUMP Festa, apparently right before leaving the stage, Oda said a crewmember would die. The manga was in Skypeia at the time and obviously, that event didn't happen until just recently, so at the following year's Festa (2003) Oda had to apologize because he hadn't gotten to it yet.

Also, Oda is an evil tease for that "something MASSIVE WILL HAPPEN but I won't say what LOL" line. T_T

I apologize in advance for not reading through the whole thread, but I didn't get on last night.

I liked this episode, and I don't want to sound nit-picky, but some of the slight dialogue changes did throw me off a bit. IMHO I can't see Luffy saying something as petty as "That's one punch he won't forget" or "and I'm not scared :(". Also, changing Blackbeard's line from "I thought the 30M was too small" to "I didn't even think he was worth 30M!!" was odd, but…oh well. It's not a huge quibble, but to me it sounds like there are subtleties in the original that is missing or slightly altered in the translation.

I loved the voices for the minor characters. Shanks, Mihawk, Doflamingo, Sengoku, etc; they all were great. And I never noticed those details before! I can't believe I never even realized there was a freaking seagull on Sengoku's cap. XD Oh, and I never did figure out how to pronounce Mariejoa/whatever it's translated as now.

Oh, and obligatory edit comment: Neji got freaking impaled twice in last night's Naruto, but they couldn't even show a comical imprint of a fist on Bellamy's cheek. lulz

Weeks like this I wish I didn't read the spoiler. As it turns out, NONE of the shadows have returned, outside the 100 that were in Luffy's body.

It would be interesting to see "Nightmare Luffy" turning out to be not quite the good idea it seemed at the time. Now Luffy and Moria are both unconscious, but none of the crew's (or Lola's pirates') shadows are back. I wonder how the shadows will return now. It would seem odd if Moria's early comment that he has to release the shadows himself, and not just get beaten up turned out to not be true. I HOPE it wasn't just "lol he was bluffing to Luffy".

When I first read that I thought that Luffy would have to fight with a certain amount of reserve or care…something NL totally obliterated. I don't really want to predict anything though, everything I thought would happen so far turned out totally wrong. -_-

Edit: Also, I wonder how Odz actually will be defeated. I love how we now have two not-quite-Luffy's battling each other. I had a feeling Nami would still be standing by the time Luffy arrives, because I couldn't see Oda giving her a hit to knock her lights out that would be half as hard as the ones he's given the other crewmembers. Also, because most of the others have already fallen and she's still the only one aware of Kuma.

Too bad she didn't actually indicate anything in the books themselves (beyond minor subtext in DH). Then it might have actually meant something! 😮

But I love how she tells everyone this months AFTER the final book is released and acts pleasantly surprised at everyone's reaction. -_- Brave? I just see a cynical attention-getting ploy she was afraid of disclosing earlier for risk of affecting her pocketbook.

I know this is totally unrelated, but does anyone remember when this may have been? I think I kind of remember something like that, but my memory is muddled.

      Back to the chapter:

I love how Nami's plot line in this arc also coincidentally forces her to change outfits as much as possible. It's oddly appropriate since most of the developments around her until recently mostly center around her laying around unconscious and looking pretty.

And, I don't know how it would have to pan out for this to happen, but a part of me kind of hopes they don't manage to recover Luffy's shadow from Odz, if only because I have an image in my head of him laying a final attack on Moria or something as the sun rises and his body framed in flickering fire. 😛

Whether or not Luffy retained that particular facet of his personality doesn't even matter at this point; Odz clearly outmatched the crew in this chapter and it would only factor in if they're actually able to get back up and effectively counterstrike. I don't personally feel Oda even has to go this route for the storyline to end satisfyingly, but if he does, it would be more interesting for me if it is retained.

And, yea, Dogpen attacked Robin. Odz also beat the crap out of the crew and that isn't something the real Luffy would ordinarily do either. I don't personally see a huge difference between the two situations other than Sanji has pretensions towards an honor code regarding women (but nevermind that ). I thought most zombies become obedient after a period of time, which explains the discrepancy between Odz and Dogpen's initial behavior and what's happening now. But for the general question of what traits are retained and which are lost, I don't think it makes much sense either.

    • RE: Chapter 470 "Odz vs Strawhats" Discussion

Luffy is motivated to engage opponents out of a number of reasons, foremost to protect friends (and yea, become the best). His persistence and will to continue despite what happens to him then isn't only a reflection of the depth of his feelings for his friends, but is just an inherent part of Luffy's personality. Luffy is a guy with a big heart who is willing to go to huge lengths once his will is fixed on something. So for me, even if Odz's desire to battle the SHs wasn't chosen out of free will, that doesn't change that other aspect of Luffy's personality. I can't even imagine a Luffy who would just half-ass it. That wouldn't even be Luffy anymore, which would kind of (IMHO) defeat the purpose of it being his shadow that was stolen.

I am reminded of Zeff's comments during the Krieg fight:

Zeff: Every once in a while,
You find an idiot who can't keep from fighting to his death once he's chosen his target…

      Sanji: Can't stop fighting...

I agree with the comments above regarding the difficulty of defeating Luffy's persistent will. It's hard for me to picture how the crew will defeat Odz, with things as they currently stand. Even if they find a way around the Odz's physical barrier, there's still the matter of Luffy animating him from inside. To me, that's just as important or more so, because as long as "Luffy" views the SHs as enemies, the problem they'll face is the one that always seems to confound Luffy's enemies. His fighting "will".

Odz will play some crucial role in the climax of the arc, but I don't think it'll be a matter of simply getting back up for round 2 and overpowering him by force.

I hope Nami will play an important factor in this whole Odz thing later on. Considering her role in this arc so far has mostly been passive and unconscious, I think it would be a nice development for her to be a crucial player in whatever's going to happen with Odz. Also, somehow, I just keep getting King Kong vibes from the image of Odz and Nami in that white dress together. 😛

It's kind of funny how the Strawhats receive such a huge beat-down, one of their worst so far, and it came from this mini Thriller Bark arc. It reminds me of the whole Aokiji fight from the end of the filler-ish Davy Back arc, how they were all so easily defeated. That whole fight, and their defeat, was like an impetus for so much of what was to follow in W7. Should be interesting to see if there's any fallout from this fight as well.

      Thanks for the translation!

From the spoiler I assumed Zoro intended to fight Oz alone at the end of the chapter, but I guess that's not quite what it says? Can't wait to find out what happens next. Thanks again!

    • RE: Cthulhu mythos

I always thought the reason for Cthulhu's popularity was the "it's so idiotic it's great" sense, but…

I love this line about Lovecraft:

Lovecraft's narrators routinely rave about the "hideous," "monstrous" and "blasphemous" nature of their revelations. Wilson went on, again quite reasonably, to observe, "Surely one of the primary rules for writing an effective tale of horror is never to use any of these words – especially if you are going, at the end, to produce an invisible whistling octopus.

Thanks for the scans! I got a little teary-eyed reading the developments between Brook and Laboon. I always thought the throwaway "No, they really just ran away" line was a little suspicious (not on Crocus's part, just the idea itself).

I just love Brook's expressions in this chapter, especially in the final Don! panel of Franky's flashback. It's so emotive the way it's drawn, despite only being a skull.

Movie 6, when the crew are facing off against…erm...that bad guy at the end, whoever he was again. >_> My memory's not to clear on this one, but Usopp, Chopper, and Robin are MIA, everyone gets into a spat, and for some reason blame Luffy for what happened. Then they all run off to try and find said missing crewmembers, even though the guy who's clearly the cause of all this is right in front of them. I HATED this scene in the movie, especially when Zoro runs off in search of the missing crewmembers as well, without a glance at Luffy, which was completely OOC in my opinion. I cannot picture Zoro, as depicted by Oda, to completely ditch Luffy and run away from the scene of an impeding fight. (Though my memory is fuzzy on this, and gratefully so)

    • RE: Official 4kids Dub Thread Mk III (The End Has Come)

I'm a bit hesitant to celebrate just yet - I mean, the only confirmations we have are in those (1-2) emails, right? That's the same information that was used on ANN and everywhere else this news was posted. Even if it's from someone at 4Kids and is to be believed, I'd hardly consider that official. If they are to be believed, it seems to me like she's trying to not definitively say one thing or another (and, in the second one, defers additional questions to Toei).

Seconding those saying Luffy's gonna pull it through - I really can't see Oda killing off Luffy. After all he's done for the members of his crew, and for the people he's come across…they practically owe everything to Luffy, as far as I'm concerned. He gives and gives, not even blinking to contemplate dying in the name of some dream of a stranger he's just met. I'm predicting a huge day of reckoning for him at the end of the series. He's almost going to get executed, but will be rescued or saved in grand style by his crewmates, perhaps with the assistance of some of those countless individuals he's helped along the way.

Apologies if many of you have already noticed if you watched the latest episode, but I loved this thread and thought a little bump wouldn't hurt. Two screenshots from 272.

      !
! 21 minutes, 8 seconds into the episode.
      !
      ! Three seconds later.

(I imagine this probably happens a lot :P)

BTW, where does that mysterious string on Luffy's hat come from, anyway? It looks like it's attached to the brim, but you don't even see it when it flies off his head. Anyway…

Also (and I don't remember if this has been mentioned), this is relatively minor, but Luffy has a bandage on his right elbow at the end of the Arlong arc (where Arlong had bit him). It's in the right place on page 11, but six pages later it's switched arms (if I recall, this happens a couple of times that chapter).

    • RE: Why does OP dominate Naruto in every aspect

      @Cap'n:

Seeing the series again on Toonami, it's suddenly a lot more boring than I remember.

When I watched the series again, I couldn't believe how I sat through all exposition that seems to fill half the time the characters spend outside (or quite often, during) their fights. And again for Chapter 315: it was nearly 16 pages of exposition just so we can see Naruto tear a paper in half. 😴

    • RE: Chapter 419 "The Legendary Hero" Discussion

It's WAY too much. The Buster Call is described as the government's strongest force. The guy, whether it's souped up or not, fights with a slingshot. The seven members and Franky beating it straight out of the CP9 fights is even a bit hard to imagine.

I feel defeating the BC would be a messianic accomplishment for any of the Straw Hats. If they do decide to challenge it, I've no doubt SogeKing probably would play a major role - but given the BC's strength and depth of emotional importance (it destroyed Ohara and massacred all its residents!), the best chance of defeating it would be through a display of unity and friendship from the nakama Saul promised Robin would find.

(Though, with that said, I agree with those who say the BC is probably a fight for another day)
