So what you're saying is that Prince Loki is going to fall madly in love with Luffy.

RE: Chapter 1110: Starfall
Shonen Jump sits on chapters for about three to four weeks before publishing them. With that in mind, it suggests that the break is likely in response to Toriyama's passing, and anything Oda does in commemoration will likely come in 1112.
There's a whole subforum for you to baselessly complain about the live action. Doing it here is just in poor taste.

Interviews with Cast and Crew Discussion
Starting a thread up for discussing cast and crew interviews with publications or content creators, especially now that the WGA strike is over and SAG-AFTRA is hopefully not too far behind.
Coming in hot is this excellent deep dive interview Matt Owens did with Deadline, talking about season 1, season 2, Jamie Lee Curtis, "Help me!", why nobody dies in One Piece, and the way they show has been resonating with fans and newcomers alike.
https://deadline.com/2023/10/one-piece-showrunner-matt-owens-season-2-interview-jamie-lee-curtis-1235563095/Expect more interviews in the coming days, especially if the strike ends and our Straw Hats can start doing press.

Crunchyroll Release Discussion / Grievance Support Group
Starting this thread to specifically talk about One Piece on Crunchyroll, since it's not really releasing to DVD, and I feel bad for cluttering the DVD thread with complaints about Crunchyroll. I'll start a Microsoft Store thread when the next release drops, as well as a secondary streaming release thread (Hulu, in particular) when more episodes drop on those platforms.
Linking to this Reddit post because it's been a great source of up-to-the-minute information regarding the release schedule of new batches of episodes: https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/comments/1b3tzyo/one_piece_dub_release_schedule_2024/
Mainly starting this thread because I really do not like the Crunchyroll app experience one bit, but it's the most effective way to be up-to-date on One Piece without shelling out 40 USD every few weeks or resorting to piracy.
I'm mostly a dub watcher, but ever since Wano in particular, the official release has not been translating on-screen text, and it really irritates me how inconsistent with providing subtitle tracks for the dub.
Starting with episode 1001, there is no English subtitle track whatsoever for English-dubbed episodes. Before then, some episodes have had multiple English subtitle tracks with one captioning dialogue and the other translating on-screen text. Good luck if you need both.
It's really frustrating how inconsistent they are with the dub release, especially since the Funimation app largely did right by the series, and is now going away. The lack of any subtitles whatsoever for 1001+ is especially annoying.

RE: Competitive Social Games Planning and Information Thread
Now that the forum is back, I've been thinking a lot about how to possibly revitalize the CSG, especially nowadays with new technologies that make running these games a lot less of a chore than they were way back when, namely Discord. A lot of structure would be lost, but there'd be room for some new ideas that haven't been possible.
I'm not necessarily saying I'm ready to break my promise and host again (and I'm not saying I'm not......), but I want to try and gauge interest, if people are even interested in getting back into this chaotic world lol.
Ideas I've had to address issues that have come up in the past:
- Speed Games (entire game played out over a night or a weekend.
- Weekend-Only Games (games that only advance on Fri-Sat-Sun, one elimination per weekend [barring twists])
- Asynchronous Games (similar to the weekend-only, where the game is stretched out in order to allow for people to compete in challenges and cast votes at their own pace
- Games where the Host Gives Up Halfway Through, But There's a Contingency Plan in Place, Like Say, an Automated Process for handling day changes and stuff. (self-explanatory)

RE: Season 2 (and Beyond?) Speculation Thread (Spoilers)
@Gizmo one of the things I like about Smoker/Tashigi is the kind of grey area they wind up in when they end Alabasta. While Garp certainly falls into that grey area, I think Garp has always been there. Smoker transitioning from his "all pirates are scum" mentality in Loguetown to the version of him that lets Luffy go at the end of Alabasta would be a fun arc to explore that's sliiiightly different than Garp and Koby's complicated relationships with Luffy.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
On the subject of the dub itself:
Colleen and David really knocked it out of the park! Luci also nailed Nami's scene with Kaido. Loved that.
Something I noticed while watching this is that 1071 was MUCH easier to follow in the dub than I found it to be in the original. I think a big part of this might be the unique advantage that the dub voices over the original voices -- they get to record against the finished animation and not the other way around. Looking at Chansard's work, it seems obvious to me that he's animating against lines that have already been recorded, and that's likely what's going on when Mayumi Tanaka's Luffy is making random Gear 5 sounds -- they don't seem to perfectly match the actual action of the scene, unlike Colleen's very deliberate inflection and sounds, or how Kaido's voice while getting thrown around by Luffy sounds timed to the scene rather than the other way around.
I know dubbing has its own set of challenges, especially against Chansard's mouth animation fidelity, but holy cow did they put in the effort to make sure it sounds as good as it looks.

RE: Season 1 General Discussion
@shadyagent The hell kind of take is "fans are ruining creator's life by consuming creator's content"? There's a debate to be had on how shitty the mangaka lifestyle can be with very valid concerns, but framing them the way you are is concern trolling at best and wildly overstating Oda's role on the production of the show.

RE: Final Fantasy XVI
Can't say I've ever gotten much challenging gameplay out of the series myself if I'm being honest with myself. Even the best of the games have rather trivial combat systems when you break them down like that. You could make a similar argument for Final Fantasy V: it's entirely possible AND practical to beat the entire game using nothing but the Wind Crystal jobs. The occasional new weapon might tempt you to try a Dragoon or something, but most bosses can be taken out with Level 2 Black Magic pretty handily, Warriors can equip almost anything, and White Mages never go out of style, so why bother with the other 20 or something jobs?
I do think that FF16 shoots itself in the foot a bit with its equipment selection which is basically a whole lot of junk. There are the accessories that make different skills do increased damage but they're so pointless and so plentiful that they just clog your inventory, while there is literally no difference between weapons other than stats (why are you throwing three new weapons at me, craftsman? Two of them are literally pointless) and the one time I got a sword with different attack and stagger damage, there was no equal and opposite sword to make the choice interesting.
I still enjoy the combat, but I'm not as skilled a player as you seem to be (I struggle a bit with the dodge mechanics so I keep the Focus Ring on for safety and I just gave up entirely on Torgal mechanics for this playthrough). It would be fair to say that the game is easy and definitely balanced toward players who aren't good at action games (like me!) and I think it would be fair to have wanted the option of a more difficult experience out the gate instead of restricting it to new game plus.
That said, I'm not done with the story (only about 75% of the way through but most of the table's been cleared sans a couple of villains), so I can speak to that a little. The overarching story is okay, to a point, I will agree with Greg at most points that it's undercooked. By far the most intriguing plot point (Dion Lesage is the MVP of the entire game thus far nobody come for him) comes to a head around the 64% mark and immediately ends with the biggest one-two punch of "reveals" that suck the majority of the air (or heh, aether) out of the story.
I wouldn't say it's "not-very-good" but rather that it's "flawed but engaging". By standards of the series, I'd still rank it closer to the top despite its flaws, but not nearly as strong as FF6 or FF9, certainly not FF Tactics. But where it shines for me is with Clive, who is still in the running as my favorite protagonist in the series, and I personally feel really engaged by the supporting cast. I don't mean the other dominants the game marketed as major characters (which sans Clive, Cid, Dion, and maaaaybe Jill has been an utter letdown) but the supporting characters that run the hub. It can come across as filler at times when you want to get to the next Eikon fight, and there's an egregious stretch around the 70 percent mark where you URGENTLY HAVE SOMEWHERE TO BE but the game throws a bunch of sidequests at you WHEN YOU HAVE SOMEWHERE YOU REALLY NEED TO BE RIGHT NOW. There's a good lull in the story right after this, why couldn't they pop then?
I'll weigh in on this aspect more when I finish the game and have some time to separate my thoughts, but there's a found family vibe that I resonate with to the hub and some of the surrounding villages. Like, there's a LOT that needs unpacking there considering the really boneheaded approach to diversity all things considered, but I resonate with the story a bit more strongly from an LGBTQIA+ perspective (to be clear--that's 100% my "interpretation" based on personal takeaways, does not seem to be writer-developer intended at all) as well as a sort of generational/family trauma story.
That latter read is precisely why 64% makes me so mad, but I'll dive deeper when I have the opportunity to digest the whole game and unpack the fallout from wasting the game's BEST antagonist.

RE: Season 1 General Discussion
I think the 12 season comment+ was somewhat said in jest. I mean, with a series as massive as One Piece, who doesn't want 20 seasons, an 8-season Buggy spinoff, a Garp and Roger prequel, a Smoker and Tashigi "road" trip anthology series with a healthy rotation of one-off guest stars, etc. ?
The 6 season comment was a bit more realistic. I think the overall impression I get from the production team is "we want to do this as long as we can -- and we have the material".

RE: Final Fantasy XVI
@Shiebs That's a bit reductive.
It's also apparently Attack on Garuda, Attack on Odin, and Attack on Bahamut. -
RE: One Piece anime remake by Wit Studio
I know pacing issues are one thing that would justify this adaptation's existence, and while East Blue doesn't have that problem nearly as much as any other saga, I think another thing that justifies it is better animation. Not to completely wail on Toei Piece -- it's 48 episodes a year nonstop for 24 years, but a 25 episode WIT production backed by Netflix money has to look better than THIS as a baseline:
Not to mention all the "running shots" that are just panning over still images, goofy walk animations, goofy proportions and contortions, etc.

RE: One Piece Live-Adaptation Drama Announced
It's weird to me that Netflix is still clinging to the binge model when Apple TV, Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, and Peacock have re-embraced the weekly model (or n+weekly) and it pays off in spades.

RE: Final Fantasy XVI
@Shiebs It's been suggested in interviews that there won't be any secret eikons, but whether additional eikons play a part in the story remains to be seen.
And no, it will not be available for PS4, it seems to be strictly PS5. I can't imagine them getting away with this level of visual insanity while still being on the PS4.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
@RomanceDawn I'm still going through the dub myself (in early Wano), but my understanding is that Funimation more or less gave up on Dub Piece after Fishman Island, but after the merge with Crunchyroll and at Toei's behest, the dub was continued from Punk Hazard and has been running at breakneck speed ever since, to the point we are now ~33 episodes behind the native release and likely very soon to be 20.
The dub itself hasn't really changed too noticeably, but I would argue that the quality of the dub has dropped in some respects -- nothing noticeable with the main crew as much, but incidental characters with one-off lines can sometimes tend to sound weak and directionless.
There's also some inconsistency with terminology. The biggest offender is the pronunciation of Urouge's name, and possibly Bege's.
In Sabaody, Urouge was pronounced "oo-rooj" and I think (do not quote me) Bege was pronounced like the word "beige".
In Whole Cake Island, Urouge was pronounce "oo-ro-oo-geh" and Bege like "be-ji" -- I think this is more accurate and sounds better for Bege, but it's absolutely not for Urouge. (Bege's kana suggests 'bejji', but Urouge's suggest 'uruuji')
In Wano, Urouge was then pronounced "oo-roo-ji" last I heard it.
It's nothing earth-shattering, but it's one of those things that nags at me. Otherwise, it's a good time and I'm thrilled to see the catch up.

"Nobody dies in One Piece"
Live Action: "I guess we'll have to do something about that."
Overall, I liked this first episode. I'll be watching again along with the rest of the series this weekend with my partner, but I have some thoughts that make me apprehensive, yet hopeful. I'm glad this is shaping up to be a big success!

Final Fantasy IX Remake and Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster better be real.

RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
@RomanceDawn I suspect losing the TV deal with Toonami and meager DVD sales were part of the problem, but it didn't help that the dub was hundreds of episodes behind and could not present itself as a viable alternative to the subtitled episodes being simulcast.
Though this is hearsay I've picked up from this thread mixed with speculation on my part. I don't know the full story and whether or not it's even true, I just know conclusively that Punk Hazard forward were brought to us in the Crunchyroll era and there is subtle evidence that it's a bit of a different product now than it was back in the Funimation days. And it's being pushed much more than it was in the past, to the point that I'm surprised the latest arc isn't being simuldubbed.

RE: Final Fantasy XVI
I was going to hold off on my thoughts because sometimes it feels like I'm talking to myself in this thread, but the demo utterly blew me away.
-
RE: Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ)
If there's one thing I'm super frustrated about, it's that the IGN sneak peek doesn't appear to have been shared with any kind of release date, which has been a really annoying part of following the dub releases over the past year. There's no consistency to the schedule. And it seems on some level like part of the issue is that Crunchyroll and MS are just releasing episodes "when they're ready" instead of adhering to any kind of worthwhile release cadence. I'm also a bit bummed about the lack of transparency when it comes to Egghead and what the new cadence will be when we inevitably catch up.
Even a "check out Fifth Gear Luffy this April on CrunchyRoll" would have been enticing enough.

RE: Season 1 General Discussion
Most of my nitpicks with the live action can be assumed to be the result of lousy episode count and shit conditions for writers, not necessarily creative decisions on the whole.
Which hopefully the second season won't have issues with if Netflix pays their writers.

RE: Creating a story that is similar to One Piece.
@andre https://forums.arlongpark.net/topic/33624/nanowrimo-2012 -- it's dated 2012 but could be repurposed. I have been out of the forum game for a long time, so I'm not sure what the rules/decorum are on necroposting or whether it'd be good to just start a new thread.
I'm planning on doing NaNoWriMo this year, so I'd be down to take part (and eventually fail spectacularly).

RE: Final Fantasy XVI
Final Fantasy XVI demo is live on PSN now! It consists of two parts.
The initial portion covers the first two or so hours of the game and progress will be carried over to the final game when it launches next Thursday. Note that the opening of the game is highly story focused and full of cutscenes, with only minimal gameplay features available to the player.
Upon completion of the main demo, a second demo is unlocked featuring "special battle content". I'm not 100% sure, but I believe this is the Garuda content shown back in February with a dungeon and handful of bosses from later in the game. This demo gives the player a much larger array of abilities to try out for themselves. This mode can't be saved, but gives players a taste of what the meat of the game will be like since that can't be fully expressed by the opening hours of the game.
I'll hold off commentary until I finish, but I'm halfway through the main demo I think and it's already a massive improvement over recent FF in its story presentation.

Season 2 (and Beyond?) Speculation Thread (Spoilers)
I figured it's a popular enough topic that can derail other conversations, but it's a worthwhile topic in and of itself, so why not have a thread explicitly dedicated to it?
Are we getting a season 2? Probably (viewership figures will reveal more I'm sure) What will it cover? Presumably the Baroque Works saga.
I really hope that season 1 is successful enough that season 2 warrants a 10 episode order. Mainly because imo an 8 episode season could shape out something like this:
Outside of structure, I definitely want to talk about casting, set pieces, etc. so feel free to use this thread to speculate about anything!

Karoo singlehandedly defeated the most threatening Baroque Works agent plus there's the whole thing with his sacrifice to get Vivi to the castle.

RE: Final Fantasy XVI
@Cinder
Towards the end, I started letting the "Recommended Abilities" option give me a random setup between fights to try and get a feel for everyone's abilities. That made me come around quite a bit on Ramuh's set too. I didn't realize that enemy attacks would also trigger Lightning Rod, so you can basically use it to turn heavy enemies' attacks against themselves haha. Haven't given a lot of thought yet to what I'll run in FF mode but I think Shiva and Bahamut's feats for sure with either Garuda or Phoenix. As for DLC, I've been putting together a theory (my last theory before the game came out is that
-- so I'm probably way off the mark) as to what that DLC might entail.
(Lore spoilers)EDIT: Yoshi-P gave a recent interview saying he wants to do a Cid DLC (personally and creatively, not that a business decision has been made), so here's hoping that comes to fruition.

RE: Season 1 General Discussion
@Riddler this has been a very common sentiment that I think justifies the shows existence. So many people who had never touched the anime/Manga, many who have never even heard of it, have come to the show and embraced it, based on comment sections, YouTube videos, and even personal anecdote (in the midst of converting a friend or two to the cause).
Obviously the hope is that some of them come back to check out the anime or Manga and fall on love with the series, but as an entry point, this could have been far far worse.
-
RE: Season 2 (and Beyond?) Speculation Thread (Spoilers)
@shadyagent It's still a Hollywood production, so it's still bound to SAG and WGA rules. Filming occurs in SA yes but the writer's room is presumably still in Los Angeles like the rest of them.

Viewership and Rankings Discussion
Break out your abacuses! (Or abaci?)
I figured I'd start another thread specifically for topics surrounding view counts, Nielsen ratings, and 'top 10 in this many countries' discussion. All the good ol number crunching that some people enjoy for some reason.
Week 1 drew 140,000,000 hours watched and 18.5 million views. Week 2 drops in about 10 minutes, with subsequent weeks dropping Tuesdays at Noon PDT.
Note that week 2 saw the drop of several long running series that have been pulling attention away from One Piece in daily rankings, so I don't entirely expect it to hold up in the US. I am however curious about how it holds up in week 3, as there's nothing significant premiering. (Week 4, however, is Sex Education, so, well, it was a good run)
Another thing I'm keeping an eye on is the number of times the soundtrack is played on Spotify, a possible indicator of the series' popularity and virality. Thus far, nothing too impressive on that front, but My Sails are Set has been picking up around 200,000~250,000 listens a day, but that number has been steadily dropping from a 250k peak. We'll see how that changes in the coming days.
-
RE: Season 2 (and Beyond?) Speculation Thread (Spoilers)
“I think [Netflix is] looking at various situations about how many episodes they do, do they break them up?”
I wonder what this says about the number of episodes. It also got me thinking about how season 1 got reduced from 10 episodes to 8. We know from Adelstein that "all ten scripts for season 1" were written by May of 2020. That means that two episodes were lost between then and when filming commenced in 2022. Conventional wisdom might say "oh yeah they were Loguetown", but I actually think I found one of the missing episodes:
There's a very common thing done in Hollywood where if an episode gets a rewrite, the original writer or writing duo is credited for Story and the revising writer or duo is credited for Teleplay. We see this in One Piece itself where Matt Owens and Steven Maeda are credited with Teleplay by, but interestingly enough there is no Story by credit. (This is just an aside, but I wonder if this is a symbolic gesture since the Story is technically by Oda?)
So with that in mind, why does episode 7 have four writers? Why are they creditted 'a & b and c & d' ? That's almost certainly because 'a & b' wrote one script and 'c & d' wrote another, and they were likely merged into what is Episode 7. Meaning that this suggests that possibly the original plan involved three episodes of Arlong Park.
Unfortunately, none of the other episodes offer compelling evidence that they were combined. They were all written by solo writers or pairs. No other Teleplay credits exist beyond the first episode. It's entirely possible the 10th episode was Loguetown.
Another thought I had is that maybe the episodes for season 2 were written during the pandemic. If season 1's episodes were done in 2020 and filming doesnt begin until 2022, there's a lot of down time in there and maybe to an earlier person's point, Netflix quietly ordered more scripts during that down time?
