Man. Everything I've seen about this game so far makes me happy. I was a HUGE Mario Kart fan when I was younger and looking at the stages for this game just dazzles me. There aren't a lot of Wii U games that have caught my attention (other than the Wind Waker HD release), but I am seriously tempted to buy the system just for this game.

RE: Game of Thrones (tv show thread)
I think if you.'re armed with conventional melee arms, going up against other people similarly armed is fine … even if they have a slight numerical advantage. But going up against a pack of attack dogs is harder. You'd be batshit insane to be less scared of the attack dogs than the guards.
[hide][/hide]
The dogs are kept singularly in separate cages. Ramsay unlocked one dog cage, lollll. Four Ironborn cannot overpower one dog, apparently. Unless they just stood there like idiots waiting for Ramsay to unlock the rest of them.1 dog > 4 Ironborn. Clearly, the dogs should be higher on the list, Gekko

RE: Game of Thrones (tv show thread)
Dinklage's performance was absolutely stellar tonight. His anger and agony of betrayal was almost a physical pressure in the room. I had goosebumps!
This season is edging closer to its climax. I wonder which of the many choice scenes they will use for the season finale.

RE: Game of Thrones (tv show thread)
Some mind-blowing stuff about the Others/White Walkers. I wonder if last part was a fragment of the advanced plot information Martin gave the show's producers or a show-only scene? Either way, it's good to get some more information about them. The implication that the Others take Craster's sons and make more Others from them has been a pretty widely-accepted theory (based on certain dialogue from the books), but seeing their city (?) and Darth Maul-looking leader was quite the surprise.
Also, some big changes to the plot, especially regarding Bran. I assume the writers figured they needed to do something to keep the audience from falling asleep during Bran scenes. Very intense stuff, I'm curious as to how the show is ultimately going to have this play out.
I enjoyed Sansa's IQ upgrade in this episode, her outright suspicion of Littlefinger was fantastic. Dude be creepin. I also liked the the continued Jaime/Brienne chemistry, and it's neat that the show is fleshing out Grey Worm's character. Grey Worm and Missandei are very cute. :)
preview for next week's episode:

Gleeson died quite well. I must hand it to him, he sold that scene very nicely. I won't miss Joffery as a character (of course), but I'll miss Gleeson's portrayal of him. At least he left the show making the fans very happy!
I was heading back home in the bus, during the summer, I think, in Oslo where I live, and passing a certain bus stop in the central place I saw a bearded dude standing, waiting for his own bus. Looked familiar, but okay. Some days later I saw him again, at the same spot. Only this I recognized him. It was this guy:

Knew he was Norwegian, though. Just expected his beard to be fake.
The beard is real?! That's so awesome.

Unless you have insurance or qualify for some sort of financial assistance, birth control pills/patches/rings are usually not that cheap here in the US. I've seen costs running around $40-$100 USD per month, depending on what you get. Plus the cost of the doctor visit, in many cases.
16 euro a year though, that's awesome. Where do you live, if I may ask?

RE: A Song of Ice and Fire (book thread)
100% sure Jon isn't dead, or if he is, it's only his physical body. Can't imagine that Martin is done with his character just yet.
Regarding his survival, I have to admit that I really don't like the theory that he will receive the "last kiss" by Melisandre because I don't want to see him turn into a character like Beric or Catelyn, a ghost of their former selves. Melisandre envisioned him first as a man, then a wolf, then a man again, so I think the possibility that he warged into Ghost and will warg back into his or possibly another human body is good. I also don't think there is enough concrete evidence that his wounds were outright fatal. He was stabbed in the stomach and between the shoulder blades, and (likely) an additional wound that he didn't feel. Serious injuries – absolutely. But still within the realm of survivability. Either way, I doubt we've seen the last of him.
Also, kudos to separating the series into two threads. It's nice to be able to discuss the book openly.

RE: The PlayStation Thread
Yeah, sucks that online play is going to be restricted to PS+ members now. Sad to lose that perk. But for me, I suppose it's really not that big of a issue. The free/discounted games that are offered with the membership makes it worth it, at least for our household; my boyfriend and I picked up a couple of great deals over the past few months that pretty much would have paid for the membership outright in overall savings (although we didn't have to actually pay anything in the first place since he took advantage of a Sony promotional that gave him a free year of membership). But basically, I guess I don't mind investing in our entertainment, and since we play a lot of games, the bit of extra cost is worth it in the long run.
Also, some hardware for the PS4:
The PS4 adapter (which rotates).
Bundled headset (looks crappy but w/e).
Back of system. -
RE: E3 2013
This conference has made it rather painfully clear where my money should be going this winter. Sony pretty much winked and showed leg at all the right moments.
I wasn't particularly excited for the XBONE before, but I honestly can't think of a single reason to purchase it over the PS4.

RE: Game of Thrones (tv show thread)
I've read that Robb and Jon were aged 3 years at the start of the show, so they were 17 at the start of season 1, and both are about 18 in the current season. The actors who play them, however, are in their mid-20s.

RE: Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
Reason 3: Did I mention no fall damage? Well maybe, but you also get a trophy called "derp" for falling from 50ft.
Only after you've had Jason Brody accidentally tumble 100ft to a tragic, broken end, can you fully appreciate how awesome this perk is.

RE: Confession Session - LOCK THIS THREAD
My first introduction to video games was playing Space Invaders on the Atari 2600 when I was very little. I forget how old I was at the time, maybe 3 or 4? My grandmother bought the system because both she and my mother liked computer & arcade games and wanted to play at home on the 'big' tv (my grandmother is now almost 80 and would probably still be playing video games if it weren't for her eyesight deterioration). There was Space Invaders and Pacman and Pitfall, doubtless others that I can't remember offhand.
I also remember watching my mom play a few old DOS games (Pharaoh's Tomb and Arctic Adventure, and another one that I think was some kind of choose-your-own adventure type supernatural mystery). I wasn't good at using the keyboard yet, so I pretty much stuck to observing, but when she got home from work I would beg her to play and let me watch because it looked so damn cool.
All these years later and ^ this still fills me with the old excitement. Oh man. And those Nevada Smith games were hard too. You didn't get no silly life meter; one touch by an enemy or a spear or whatever and you're done. Not to mention the game was filled with traps and hidden crap that you didn't know was there until you stumbled on it and died. Good times.
I forget what happened to our Atari & old PC, probably either sold or stolen. So there was a videogameless gap of a year or two before my mom bought a SNES for my birthday, which came bundled with The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. I'll never forget the "oh shit" moment of defeating Agahnim and thinking I won the game and then BOOM, Dark World and did you say seven crystals?? It was the first "real" videogame that left that kind of an impact on me and turned what was an occasional time-waster into an active interest.

RE: Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
it's just so awful and cheesy and goddamn this game is fantastic
There seriously needs to be a New Game+ or something where you can blast through the game with all your fully-upgraded arsenal, or at least an option to reset the bases, like in FC3
-
RE: Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
I feel like I should be able to find a retro cartridge copy of this game at a thrift store for $10, complete with a full-size, hard plastic power glove. And yes, that is pretty goddamn awesome.
, which you should all download immediately (the Steam version of the game already comes with the soundtrack as part of the download, lucky bastards).$15 bucks is a steal for this game. Hell, I'd pay that for the soundtrack alone.

RE: Confession Session - LOCK THIS THREAD
So after a few minutes of searching, it appears that, since DOMA is a federal law that only recognizes the union between one man and woman as being the legal definition of marriage, it would take precedence over state law as far as immigration is concerned. Apparently, it's been challenged a few times in the past by same-sex couples, to no avail. That pesky Section 3. So as of yet, it doesn't look like it's a viable option for immigration.
I really hope this is something that will change in the very near future. Bad enough that so many states won't even let you wed your partner because your sex happens to match, shittier still for those who can marry and are told that, hey, um, well, your marriage isn't legal in the federal eyes of the government, so no, you can't help your spouse immigrate. What a catch-22.

RE: Confession Session - LOCK THIS THREAD
Ditto everything Kenny and Chrissie said. Just be careful. 2 months isn't a whole lot of time to get to know someone, especially online. People aren't always what they seem to be when you finally meet & get to know them in person. This can be both a good and bad thing (I've personally have had experience with both). The fact that you and your boyfriend are nations apart is all the more reason for caution.
But like Chrissie & Zeph, I met the love of my life here on AP, so I'm a firm believer that online relationships can work out. Just definitely have a backup plan (or two), just in case things go sour.
Or if you want to get married on that, you have to prove you did not know each other prior to your coming in the US to study. And after leaving you have to re-apply for another Visa (i.e. Fiancee Visa which he has to do for you with the intention of marrying you) to move there, or find a job to apply for an Employment Visa to move there. It's complicated huh? Wedding is basically the 'easiest' for your current situation, buuuut… I feel it's a bit too early for a commitment like that for you guys, right? :)
I'm not sure that the marriage-based immigration option applies for same-sex couples though, does it? For the state that do permit gay marriage, that is. I honestly have no clue.

RE: The Evil Within (new Shinji Mikami game)
I think "Psycho Break" is a better title for the game, honestly. "The Evil Within" sounds slightly generic, imo.
I wonder if Vault Head is going to be this game's answer to Pyramid Head.

RE: Game of Thrones (tv show thread)
Just watched the latest episode because we don't have HBO at my house so I have to turn to other sources to keep up to date on this BUT
! - Jaime and Brienne's interaction continues to grow in depth. Actually felt a sliver of sympathy for Jaime, even though he's still more or less a prick. Having to walk around with your severed hand rotting around your neck though, pretty f'ed up….....almost as f'ed up as throwing a kid out a window, you might say.
! - Really enjoying all of the Varys dialogue. Thought the show did a great job recollecting the story of how Varys was cut, and it one-upped the book by having his sorcerer shipped to him, which was awesome.
! - Pod the Sex God. Lovin' it.
! - Margaery twirling Joffery around her finger like a lock of hair and Cersei getting sour about it was great.
! - Tywin cutting Cersei down to size without even putting down his quill was also great.
! - Figured Theon was getting played and was not disappointed. His regret during the escape was sad to watch though, especially the part about Ned. :(
! - The Queen of Thorns continues to be the most awesome cynical badass old lady in the show.
! - The Hound takes no shit from anyone.
! - The mutiny at Craster's Keep scene was very well-done and full of tension. I'll miss old Mormont, too bad we didn't get to see his dying words to Sam though.
! - Bran. Still dreaming. Ehhh.
! - Daenery's sack of Astapor remains one of the best Dany scenes in both the show and the books. Master Kraznys' "wait....oh shit" moment when he realized Dany spoke Valyrian was hilarous.Really stellar episode all around.

RE: The Evil Within (new Shinji Mikami game)
IGN expanded their first look at the game earlier today: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/04/22/the-evil-within-first-look
Gotta say, after reading this & watching the video, I am mad hype to see more from this game. It's neat that they're using the Winchester House's architecture as a source of inspiration (windows in the floor, doors & staircases going nowhere, ect). Given that the game takes place in an asylum, it merges well with the creepy psychological elements that naturally comes from this particular location.
Looks like they're trying in earnest to balance the sense of unpredictability with limited combat options. Shifting environments? That can happen at any time? oooo yes~ Keep me on my toes, game. Definitely interested in seeing more of the monster designs as well.
So yeah. Really intrigued with the idea of seeing another survival horror game that is actually…you know, scary.

RE: Relationships?
AND STAY AWAY FROM LATINA'S, they will suck your soul right out of you..and other things. But their hot blood is something even I fear.
I was all set to be offended but
well, truth be told, we are some hot blooded dames. I can't even deny it. The passion is a double-edged sword.
In my own particular case though, I have a boyfriend who is wonderfully calm and even-tempered, which balances my fire quite nicely. We can laugh off things together that would have left the earlier me seething.
It's really what I consider the core of a good relationship to be about anyway - complementing each other's positive qualities and softening the negative ones.
-
RE: Countries
You don't want me posting Kyoto images, you two.
The mountains remind me quite a bit of Appalachia.
Though I've definitely been happier since moving to Ohio last year, I can't deny rural Kentucky's rustic charm. It's gorgeous any time of the year, an outdoorsman (and woman!)'s dream. Before I left, I lived in a town of about 2000 people (a very poor town if truth be told. About 45% of the population lived below the poverty line). But it was rich in beauty and tradition. Lush mountains, clearwater streams, hundreds of tree-lined trails. The county I lived in was something of a throwback; it was dry (meaning no alcohol could be served or sold) and hyper-religious….one of those places where a person could be defined by which church they belonged to (most churches were Baptist, and I guess Baptist must come in many flavors, because the ratio was 20 to 1). This combination, in addition to the low population, meant that there was very little in terms of recreational activity if you weren't the diehard outdoorsy type. If you liked museums, art galleries, bars, clubs, decent libraries, and non-fast food chain restaurants, you're completely out of luck. But if you liked hiking, horseback riding, four-wheeling, the occasional boil water advisory, and especially hunting….by god this is the place for you.
Even though I was largely unhappy there due to the widespread poverty and clannish behavior of the locals (which, even after 19 years of living there, I was somehow never quite able to be), I do sometimes miss that rural beauty very much. Ohio, of course, has its own beauty, but every now and then I am struck by how surreal the lack of mountains is to me. There's a saying around that area of KY that you can never truly "escape them hills" -- a saying that I've found to be almost tragically true. As glad as I am to now be far and away, a part of my heart will always be there.
