RE: Berserk
One of Muira's assistants has spoken out on that issue. He WASN'T unhealthy.
There's also no official decision yet if they'll be continuing, but it sounds like its maybe possible if they're not dismissing it outright.
I haven't been able to go out for a week and chocolate has become a precious food. (2006)
Two thirds of my body is made of energy bars. Does that mean that Berserk is two-thirds sponsored by the manufacturer? (2009)
I haven't been able to see live cherry blossoms this year either. (2011)@Robby, it makes sense they are trying to "protect his honor", but Miura writing these three things is a clear sign of overwork.
Even a decent diet and some exercise don't protect you from overwork, excessive stress, and never/rarely leaving the house.
It's very possible that it was a self-induced pressure, but as their editor they should have pushed (forced) him more to take breaks.
Unfortunately here in Japan it's not common to have a manager who tells you to go home or to take it easy. I have been working in recruitment in Tokyo for a few years now, and I heard plenty, plenty horror stories. The "average" nice guy/manager will not push you, and will be sympathetic, and might even say "don't push yourself too hard, ne?", but will not tell you to turn off the pc and give you extra days off. It's an endemic, toxic work culture here - even more so in the gaming and animation industry; there, tons of designers are paid pennies because they are so much in love with their work, and therefore overworked.
Miura's death saddens and angers me, because a good editor/company should have prevented those conditions - but I will now remember to tell myself to chill out whenever there's a break, and be happy for the mangaka. -
RE: Berserk
(pasting from an Italian website)
Kentaro Miura (1966-2021) died on 6 May. He leaves no wife or children. Cause of death is aortic dissection. In practice, the internal tissue of the aorta tears and creates a sac. When the pouch in turn breaks, the outcome is fatal. Causes include high blood pressure and excess stimulants. Only early diagnosis can save lives. But what was Miura's life like? Let's try to read the autobiographical notes he left in his comics …
I got a fever of 40. Looking back, I only had two days off this year. (1993)
I lost 5 kilos without doing anything. I wonder why. (1993)
For the past two months, I've slept an average of less than four hours a night. (1993)
I will turn 27 in July. Looking back, it's been 27 years of comics. Is this what I want? (1993)
Since I moved, my hours of sleep have been less than four. (1994)
It's the same every year, I have to work on Christmas and New Year. I would like to celebrate, once in a while. (1994)
I had a day off for the first time in a month and a half and when I got out, I had heat stroke. (1995)
I bought new shoes and clothes for the New Year. I only have a pair of sneakers. (1996)
I was in Okinawa for my first mangaka vacation and for the first two and a half days I was sick with heat stroke. (1998)
In the past month and a half, I've been out for two hours to have dinner at a club. (2001)
If I haven't seen people for a long time, my mouth no longer works as it should. (2002)
My days off are half a day every two months. I haven't taken two consecutive days off in four years. I'm getting tired. (2004)
I had another collapse from overwork. (2005)
My thirty years are about to end. My life is a mess, made up only of manga. But it can't be returned to me, so I'll go ahead! I will stay indoors again this year. (2006)
After all, I will not be locked in the house, because I feel alone. (2006)
I haven't been able to go out for a week and chocolate has become a precious food. (2006)
Two thirds of my body is made of energy bars. Does that mean that Berserk is two-thirds sponsored by the manufacturer? (2009)

RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
I've long been of the opinion that the Elder Stars are actually pretty upstanding fellows….who hate themselves and what they must do every single day.
I'd be surprised if they weren't adventurers who got caught up in the history of the world and in order to protect people from a nefarious force/their own history, do what they must.
They're afraid of what might happen if someone tries to 'break the wheel' because they know the futility of it.
That's where Luffy comes in because he'll subvert even their expectations.
NOT an easy job for Oda to write, but that's what we trust him to do.
In a way, similar to Thanos of the last Avengers movie: wanting to "keep balance", and therefore annihilate part of the population, but not with joy or anger - something like that?
It becomes an interesting (and somewhat) classical twist - of opposition of not good vs bad, rather different visions of seeing/considering what is (the greater) good.Greg, do you think that at Elbaf Big Mom will recover her memory and become non-hostile to Luffy as an indirect consequence? :-o
-
RE: Greg: Teacher of SUPER " OP " course !
Yeah. But even after 6 years I don't think anyone has found the secret part, or at least mentioned it.
I did, some time ago… But obviously I'm oblivious to why you may be attached to that song at all, to begin with...! Because very "op-like"?

RE: Suburban Errorist's Japanese Language Learning Log
Downloaded the Anki!
Breezed through the first 20!
So…. I'll be asking more questions when I have problems coming up with stories (probably extremely soon). And I'll have to re-read your earlier posts. Thanks! -
RE: Suburban Errorist's Japanese Language Learning Log
One of my main (quick) questions about your Kanji learning: how many readings did you learn per Kanji, while memorizing it?
None? Onyomi? Kunyomi? Both? What when they have multiple? -
RE: Suburban Errorist's Japanese Language Learning Log
Thank you! Feel free to ask me questions of things I have done, remembering kanji, vocab etc. It's very effective and I can't believe it will be one year in just under 3 and a half months.
Again, this thread is fantastic.
So, let me ask you first a couple of things about motivation and context.
What motivates you to learn Japanese, and what are you trying to achieve, exactly? Where (approximately) do you live, and which kind of job do you do?
I saw you wrote about commuting-learning strategies, but I live in NYC and commute by bike for about 20 minutes (I work at the U.N.), so I can't learn much at that time. But my job is not too taxing and have several breaks, so I could use the time then.I have learnt Japanese for a few years, but always on and off - I read Hiragana and Katakana, and started Kanjis but know only around 100 or so. I know expressions, and I can have a polite, correct, yet fairly limited conversation. What was your starting point one year ago? Total zero?
My (newly wed! :D ) wife is Japanese, and we are thinking of moving to Japan in a near future. I speak fluently (and on a daily basis for work) Italian, German, Spanish, French and Portuguese, so languages are easy for me, but I learnt them almost always by living in the country or forced exposure to natives.
Right now, I am facing the struggle of having to learn Japanese without that much language/culture exposure. I hope I'm not being too nosy with my questions, I put down all this details about me to paint a better picture, and maybe give you references for what might be useful to me. I have a couple of Japanese colleagues, too, btw, and if my Japanese were near-fluent (not anytime soon though), I could ask to be trained and work-professionally in Japanese, too.
Going to sleep now! Happy weekend! -
RE: Suburban Errorist's Japanese Language Learning Log
Suburban, this thread is great, and I think I will be commenting - AND asking questions, given that I have to crank up my Japanese learning big time, for reasons I will detail later.
Big kudos to you!

Grazie Team! :-)

RE: Chapter 838: "Bropper"
If Oda made Luffy's victory come from eating the biscuits, I'm calling shenanigans. Would you really want something in your body that your enemy could turn into a sword?
+1 on the luffy eating the biscuits. And Cracker not expecting it and not being able to control them anymore while inside luffy's stomach.

RE: One Piece 830 Ita by RZ Team
Boh... -
RE: One Piece 829 Ita by RZ Team
@Mr2:
Grazie per il capitolo! :-)

RE: One Piece 828 Ita by RZ Team
Vabbe'! Grazie per il capitolo! :D -
RE: One Piece 824 Ita by RZ Team
Grazie Team! :D
io!, "tornando a One Piece, abbiamo seriamente rischiato di perdere qualcuno in questo capitolo XD" - a chi ti riferisci? :-oSecondo voi Jack e' in parte uomo pesce o no?!?!
RE: One Piece 813 Ita by RZ Team
Bella storia, grazie Team!!
Ma quindi.. Sanji continua a tenere Caesar sotto scacco? :-o -
RE: One Piece 812 Ita by RZ Team
e quindi…. alleanza con BigMom???
grazie RZT!! -
RE: One Piece 810 Ita by RZ Team
Grazie zietti! :D E buon Natale! :D :D :D
Niente pausa la settimana prossima, giusto? -
RE: One Piece 809 Ita by RZ Team
Uhm.... -
RE: One Piece 808 Ita by RZ Team
E quindi…?
-
RE: One Piece 809 Ita by RZ Team
Grazie mille!

RE: One Piece 792 Ita by RZ Team
ciao

RE: One Piece 792 Ita by RZ Team
Bella storia, grazie RZT!
Quindi Sabo riparte... senza nemmeno dire ciao a Rufy? Naaaaaah!
RE: One Piece 791 Ita by RZ Team
Secondo me ora DD muore.
-
RE: One Piece 790 Ita by RZ Team
@Roy:
O forse Champion.
-
RE: One Piece 790 Ita by RZ Team
Bella storia, grazie team!
RE: One Piece 786 Ita by RZ Team
bella storia, grazie!
Capitolo succoso, si'…! :D -
RE: One Piece 785 Ita by RZ Team
@Roy:
Crocodile then explained that the four Jailer Beasts are Awakened Zoan users and they have super strength and high recovery rates and that the three guards which he, Jinbe, and Luffy had just beaten would recover soon as well. (cap 544)

RE: One Piece 785 Ita by RZ Team
RE: One Piece 785 Ita by RZ Team
Bella, grazie! :-)
RE: One Piece 784 Ita by RZ Team
-
RE: One Piece 783 Ita by RZ Team
Si allunga, si scalda, pompa/pulsa, si indurisce, e vibra.
-
RE: One Piece 782 Ita by RZ Team
-
RE: One Piece 782 Ita by RZ Team
grazie!
